- Without Piccolo's help, Gohan and Videl might have split up leaving Pan in a broken home. Let's talk about the Namekian's role in Dragon Ball Super Super Hero, his future and how he has become an important character in Dragonball again!
So... this was a good year for Piccolo, wasn't it? I think we can all safely say that 2022 has been a very positive time of it for the Namekian, at a time where we weren't quite sure what the future held for this particular character. It's all been coming up roses for Piccolo. Think about it! The dude got his own movie, a new transformation (technically TWO!) as well as some adoration from Shenron...but you could easily describe this as bias since the guy who MADE Shenron in the first place is nestled deeply within the cranium of the new Kamiccolo. Nevertheless, this is the first time we've seen the dragon being that proactive with a wish and...I can't stress this enough...Piccolo WAS the main focus of the movie, Gohan was a relative afterthought, Toriyama having to be effectively PROMPTED to include Gohan in there from the other team members of the movie production committee, which included Akio Iyoku, who is the go-to guy nowadays for Dragon Ball content outside of Toriyama.

Man Piccolo is really getting close to being Gohan's actual father. From being arch nemeses with Gohan's father to fixing Gohan's marriage, what a character arc.

I'm still sad that Videl ended up just as another housewife in DB. The beginning of her story had such an adventure feel to it - she was like a female protagonist discovering the true secret/hidden world around her.
Fortunately, we still have Masako's "What If Videl was a Z-Fighter?"
At least in SH she has a job as a martial arts instructor!

In a very real way Piccolo is still following Kami's role of Guardian. Letting others do the work when they can. Gathering information. Motivating and advising others?
Sure he's far more active than Kami, butat the weight class these threats tend to be at? A more proactive approach is to be expected.
Piccolo is a fun support/mentor. He wears his dad's chair well. Sure it's no castle, but that's a nice little house.

18's lack of effectiveness makes sense. She didn't arrive until after gamma 1 & 2 were stopped. The moment she saw cell max she was likely having PTSD flashbacks from being absorbed by cell

its easy to forget he's not just piccolo. he's a completely different namekian from who we originally knew. he has the wisdom of Kami. and Nail had spent plenty of time with Guru so he's no fool either. he's taken on their roles as guardian observer so he carries that experience and wisdom that's literally worth countless generations
I think Nail is more significant than we think. Nail isn't just wise, Nail loves his family. And he brought some of that compassion to Piccolo
@@rosesweetcharlotte very true. Piccolo and Kami were so removed from their heritage and Nail brought that pride in their people and culture. Probably cemented Nail's side of the relationship with gohan when he came out of the time chamber asking for an outfit like his.
Honestly Namekian lore is weirdly the most consistent and seen lore in Dragonbsll
I think this is why I love Piccolo's power-ups in this movie so much. I mean, he's a Namek and the Namekians are the ones who create the dragons, so of course it makes sense that Shenron would give him a boost

That line change in the english dub makes sense for other reasons I work with kids and one of the rules is that we can't just release a kid to anyone who shows up. Each kid has a list of approved individuals who can pick them up and Piccolo would have to already been listed on Pan's paperwork. In other words by releasing Pan to Piccolo Janet and the preschool are free from liability for Pan's kidnapping.
I just love that Piccolo is not only on a list of Pan's approved guardians, but that just the lead up to this is so mundane and funny. Like, Gohan and Videl would have had to explain some of their family situations and why Pan spends more time with this giant green alien than she does her biological grandfather
You briefly mentioned Android 18's contribution which made me think about how traumatic the fight against Cell Max must have been for her. I mean, it looked like a giant red version of Imperfect Cell, how he looked when he absorbed her. I'm pretty sure he was a physical manifestation of her nightmares right there
I really do whole heartedly believe that piccolo is like an older brother to Gohan.

Like piccolo calling Gohan out on his BS and the respect Gohan had for Goku is seperate from the respect for piccolo. Gohan also thinks piccolo is really cool which is much more common in siblings than guardians.

Ironically enough, given his heritage, Piccolo is arguably the most down to earth member of the Dragon Team. He doesn't really put up pretenses and he is more logical than the likes of Goku or Vegeta.
He also has less likely to act selfishly . Goku will make dumb choices if he thinks he will get a good fight out of it, and Vegeta’s ego drives him to huge mistakes all the time. Piccolo is part of the Guardian of earth, and he keeps at least part of an eye on the big picture
A but of a tangent, but I never thought about Piccolo as more than just Gohan’s mentor, but also as a primary driver of the team’s overall development. He’s really the only member of the team that’s willing to call out others when they goof up or slack, even including Goku and Vegeta. His opinion actually does seem to matter to them.
Which has me curious about where Vegeta’s respect for the Namekian came from. While it’s a bit strange seeing him actually express emotional vulnerability in front of Piccolo in the Buu Saga before his big sacrifice, when you think about it, who else could it have possibly been with that would have felt at all plausible?
Plus Piccolo’s dressing down of Vegeta in the OG Broly movie is honestly one of the best parts of it. And again, something that I can’t see any other character really pulling off convincingly (and yes, I’m including Future Trunks).
I always assumed the respect came from Piccolo risking his life in the fight against Frieza, becoming the strongest during the Cell Saga when Vegeta considered Namekians as a weaker race and there shared warrior mentality.
I think part of it is also Vegeta finally getting Piccolo after all those years. When Vegeta was speaking to Piccolo he was the only member of the dragon team still fighting, and when they first met, he had sacrificed himself to rescue Gohan from certain death. In that particular scene, the role was reversed; Buu was the inevitable destroyer, a problem Vegeta had effectively raised through selfish desire, but this time it was his turn to sacrifice himself to rescue his son. It was at that point he understood entirely what Piccolo had felt that drove him to his action, and that while he had always respected him as a fierce adversary, it was probably the first time that he really got over his ego enough to understand him.
Piccolo in my mind is really Tien done better. He's a loner who had come to terms with his own nature and had learnt to care for others and sacrificed himself willingly on many occasions. The only reason I say he did a better job than Tien was that he connected with members of the cast, like Gohan, Killian and more. Tien always existed to me awkwardly at one side, being a legitimate badass hero that only turned up when the chips were really down, but he never really socialized. I mean, seriously, when I first watched Dragonball Z I barely remembered the guy beyond being that one guy who stopped Cell for a good while. Piccolo is similar but seemed to always be there, training with Goku and Gohan, forming a lasting connection with the latter despite being born hateful, and had travelled a very similar path to Vegeta that, unlike most other people the Sayian knew, they had walked the same hard road to redemption thanks to these incredible people who had changed them but never experienced the same growth.
If you think about it, does exist a moment in Z where Vegeta talks with a particular Z figther other than Piccolo? (No, insulta dont count)
@@Eric6761 Not really. I mean, he did speak a fair amount to Trunks, at, praising, and slandering him in equal measure, but most of the time he isn't really welcome and he doesn't really seem to care about that.
Then again, most Z fighters who aren't Goku or Piccolo aren't really contributors. Even Gohan tends to be a more passive spectator when he isn't directly being confronted or acting under his own agency.. Which is disappointingly consistent with his later character developments. XD
He's the Team Dad, really. He's the one character you can count on to be the adult.
Given Janet, Gohan and Videl's age, I wouldn't be surprised if Janet was one of their classmates at OHS, or at least in the same year but different class. So Piccolo and her could have met at Gohan's and Vi's wedding, lost touch, then be reunited again after Pan was born.
I mean, technically Piccolo isn;t that far off age wise, like maybe 3 to 6 years older maybe?
Something I took note of while rewatching DBZ/DBZ Kai was that in Super Hero, Gohan learning the Special Beam Cannon wasn't out of nowhere. During their trip to Namek while Gohan and Krillin were image training, the image training ended with Gohan doing the Special Beam Cannon. So Gohan had likely been trying to learn that move properly ever since he was just a little kid. And if he kept up on his training for all that time, he'd likely have learned it even sooner than he did.
Goku spared Majunior and now he feels indebted to the Son Family 🤣

Honestly, I wouldn't mind some more Big Green action. I always liked Piccolo, him being the more stoic badass and as I got older, I DEFINITELY get his aversion to people in general and him just wanting to be on his own and not be bothered too much.
Imagine knowing that you might have to be the last line of defense for your entire planet and *not* doing your pushups, situps and juice.
I don't know, that seems more reason to let it go. That is a LOT of pressure for anyone and Gohan has been under it since he was 4
Piccolo truly was the hero in the whole movie
Piccolo also helped the hero from ultimate tenkaichi achieve super sayian, by pretending to be a villain, defeating the hero, and then taunting him that he was going to continue his evil ways. This motivated the hero to stand up and in a fit of righteous anger to transform and then kick Piccolo's butt. The hero quickly figured out that Piccolo was actually testing him to see if he had what it takes to save the world.
I just hope more side characters get more shine in the future
We don’t need them all to be powerhouses but I wouldn’t mind more episodes or even arcs with the Saiyans sidelined
18, 17, Piccolo, Gohan, Krillin, Tien, Yamcha, Videl, Bulma we’ve got a lot of fun characters to see
I’d like to see the rest of the cast to get more shine like Bulma and Piccolo, because even when they’re not fighting they’re still a part of the plot
I just hope the direction of Superhero continues
Honestly, the slice of life episodes in Super were great and I want more of that. I wanna see a Barry Kahn vs Gohan again, or maybe, maybe Roshi finally getting over his little problem.

Funny enough I think that Super is some of my favorite writing for Piccolo. In terms of the goofy, fun part of his personality, Piccolo is written best there. They make jokes about how Piccolo is an outcast and therefore doesn’t have best social skills. Then moments like his epiphany as to why Goku and Vegeta married who they did was hilarious. Obviously him getting serious in battle is awesome too, but I find more and more lately that I’m more fond of the character moments instead of all the action. I don’t want it gone, but I like seeing their personality shining through
Super ironically (or not given that Dragon Ball was a gag manga that was somewhat character-driven) is at its best when it is not about fighting, specifically because we all know we are following planet-destroying defenders of the Earth doing normal stuff who are not that great at that stuff, the best example being the baseball game where everyone is casually using superpowers and Yamcha still is the best baseball player simply because he has played it before.
I like that Piccolo is just a member of the family by then. It isn't just that they're fighters and all that, it's that the Z Team turned into a little family of people who sort of needed it
I'd like to think, if we had an abridged version of this movie, when Gohan goes beast he'd shout "Get your filthy hands off my dad."

I loved getting more Piccolo. He was always my favourite, but I had been feeling he was past his time and I'd never see him really shine again given tournament of power. Thinking they were gonna Knuckles him and make him just comedic relief. Getting to see him move forward again made me smile ear to ear.

Piccolo, the ultimate wingman
Piccolo has been the mentor figure for most of the Dragonball story Z and onward. He teaches Gohan how to fight and survive on his own. He gives guidance to the cast and leads the rest of the Z Fighters on a regular basis. He wakes Goku up to who Gohan is in the Cell saga at the end. He becomes the primary teacher of Goten and Trunks during the Buu saga. He brings Gohan to the level of Super Saiyan Blue in like a day. And then later serves as the push over the edge Gohan needed to properly unleash his potential again. To anyone who felt that Gohan Beast was forced, remember that Gohan NEVER had a moment where his anger snapped after getting his potential unleashed by the Elder Kai. Seeing Piccolo get beat down so brutally, the guy who he had complete utter faith in, and knowing that he had nobody else to protect everyone, just like in the Cell Games btw, he had nobody left. 16 helped him realize that he had nobody left then, and Piccolo's defeat made him realize it then as well. Piccolo is directly responsible for the constant growth of Gohan, and I wouldn't be surprised if Piccolo continues to be the one who pushes folks with potential forward. Goten and Trunks, their latent potential is insane as well. Perhaps in the future Piccolo will push them further and have them achieve power beyond their fathers as well.
Let's face it, Piccolo is the MVP of Dragonball at those point! Also he'll most likely be the reason for Pan (maybe Bulla too) reaches Super Saiyan, but I don't think it'll be because of him dying to cause that, it'll be through his training methods, but that's just my opinion!

Piccolo was my favorite before Gohan and Vegeta really grew on me but man am I glad Piccolo is getting some much deserved love. He is my top non-saiyan though.

It would be cool if we got a more toned back mini arc where videl and hercule have to team up to actually somehow beat a villain who immobilised gohan (whilst Goku and vegeta are busy) might be able to see hercule actually learn some cool skills and not tricks haha

One last question. What do you think of doing a limited series lead by Gohan that would focus on the lesser used characters like Tien, an adult Future Mai, Adult Trunks and maybe a ressurectedGine? I know it sounds random but I love it when underutilized characters get the love.

I liked the juxtaposition of Gohan being a “bad dad” like Goku in some ways. Much like Goku focused too much on training Gohan focuses too much on studying.
I think the "with great power comes great responsibility" thing applies to gohan more than even possibly spiderman. He has a responsibility and he needs to acknowledge that. Sometimes in life we can't pursue our own dreams - especially when we have chosen to make a family. Sometimes we need to realise our potential for the benefit of the ones we love. Even if its not what we want. I realise his role model is basically goku who never did anything he didn't want, but piccolo is the counterbalance to that.
It's time he reached his potential and stayed there for the sake of the ones he loves.

You realize, if End of Z is still considered canon, Gohan is destined to go soft...again. Vegeta made a comment in End of Z about his disappointment in how the half-Saiyans have had no interest in training. That goes for Gohan, Trunks, and Goten.
Maybe that will be retconned to Vegeta playfully jabbing at the younger generation when it is clear that they have been keeping up, or maybe a sort of irony that Vegeta thinks only Uub will be the next protector of Earth from his perspective.
World building is such an important part of story telling. Definitely one of my favorite things when I get around to working on story’s.
I think that it is okay to ship Janet and Piccolo if people want to but for me it would be better to just have her be a platonic friend for him outside of the Z-fighters and Tom from MySpace.
I think it is funny how piccolo is only about 4 years older than gohan.
So now that the power levels of everyone and their grandmothers are increasing so much, should the humans like Krillin and Tenshen also get a boost?

i think that would be an interesting idea because shin and beerus got a kick up the arse during the tournament of power arc so the quality of universe 7 should be increasing so should the life within get stronger, so humans should start to evolve and other races
@@deathwishunicorn2895 Train with the Kaioshins maybe? I mean the Kaioshins have turned into useless background characters as well recently and Whis can't train everyone. Tien,Krillin etc could also train Goten and Trunks who also are also left in the dust recently.

I'm glad it was a piccolo based movie. It was a good decision and the movie is all the better for it. He's my favorite alien. He's needed an upgrade for a while but I was thinking the elder kai unlock ability instead of guru unlock potential. Maybe we'll get that in the future. The orange piccolo form is awesome too.

In terms of who should be the focus of movies...
Im just burnt out on the son family, or just goku and super Gohan. My top candidate is a story focusing the briefs or broly. Saiyans yes, but not goku
Piccolo is the backbone of Gohan’s family life and the Dragon Team. He brings up on Gohan’s flaws such as him not training to prepare for future threats and him neglecting his family for research. I also love the Piccolo and Janet ship. It would be pretty awesome if Piccolo and Janet got into a relationship and got married and had Namekian/Earthling kids.
Piccolo is like a green and jacked Uncle Iroh.
I wonder if he would like Tea... with all that not eating food shtick.

Wow really glad we got all that character development for Gohan. Can't wait to do it all over again.
Gohan walks a middle road between Human and God, and is reluctant to let himself fall to his Beast(Great Ape?). His whole story is trying to regain control, and he chooses to ride with the Earthlings. Gohan just wants a normal life.
Gohan is not a bad dad he just acts like his own and disappears for days or weeks on his training which is researching
Piccolo is a better character than Goku. Sure he starts out as a villain but his redemption after kidnapping Gohan, fusing with nail and kami, has given him a more complete character arc than anyone else
With all this new stuff Piccolo has done recently, it kind of makes me think about the what-if idea of what if Piccolo stayed evil? At this point there would be so much that could change! I wonder if it's been discussed in any roundhouse livestreams.

great, now I'm Imagining a filler arc with Piccilo and Janet becoming friends and they start learning from about the other's teaching styles.
It's time that the other Z Fighters start getting somewhere in this world. Whether it be Piccolo x Janet or Yamcha and um what's her name from Dragonball Heroes. A love story, a massive powerup to catch up to the rest of the squad. Starting families of their own.

It is rather depressing to go back to Piccolo's backstory. Katas, Kami/Demon King Piccolo's father, did love his son, just wasn't able to be around because of the catastrophic storm on Namek. And then on Earth, he was completely alone.
And then Piccolo was born but no one was there to help him. And he didn't seem to want any help.
