Why Yamcha Is The Biggest Joke In Dragon Ball

  • Why does Yamcha not get much credit in Dragon Ball? Today we discuss why the first rival of Goku doesn't get much love or opportunities to show his original potential and why the break up of him and Bulma was so weird.
And while there were attempts recently to try and connect this pose with a triumph in the baseball episode, which has gone down as one of the most memorable Super episodes (you know your series has produced a corker when people refer to a specific trope to said episode) but Yamcha still hasn't recovered from years of being this franchise's punching bag...most of the jokes of the series revolve around him and sometimes even the actual show chooses to play upon the meta humour for a quick laugh or to get some attention on it when things are looking a little stale. Do characters really deserve this kind of treatment from the show runners? Or is this simply the vestigial tail of a bygone age where the showrunners didn't care about that sort of thing for the sake of a gag? It's up for discussion, certainly for Dragon Ball Super and beyond.
Including Dragon Ball Z Kakarot and THAT mission.

Bulma was originally angry at Yamcha for skipping dates because he keeps training or doing random stuff like baseball. The cheating thing came from a throwaway line from Future Trunks that only really exists to justify Bulma x Vegeta (and even then that relationship is crazy)

    • @BreitheNua

Honestly, just the skipping dates would be good enough reason on it's own, if expanded upon. The out of character cheating plot point wasn't at all necessary.
Hell I feel like Bulma just didn't like how much of a pushover he was in regards to arguments with her, and saw him as "less of a man" as sexist as that is (granted I may be thinking of the TeamFourStar Bulma here, not canon Bulma) and was more attracted to Vegeta cause he actually pushes back.

Another part I don't get is while Yamcha was offed like a joke in both the final tournament of og dragonball and by the saibaman, both instances were extremely justifiable and had solid intentions behind them. Him losing to Kami shouldn't be a big deal because it was Kami. Yeah he did end up getting goofed on during the fight, but Yamcha made Kami need to try and was the main motivator as to why Kami was willing to train them for the Saiyan invasion, something that no human being has ever came close to doing. That is a HUGE deal in OG Dragonball. And then we have the Saibaman which you already mentioned the noble intentions behind him taking the fight, but people seem to forget that Yamcha actually was stronger and beat that Saibaman. His hubris got the better of him in the moment and he got caught off guard by something nobody in the group had any idea Saibaman could do. A lot of people would have fallen for the same trick without the knowledge in advance. Later instances made him much more of a joke, but his initial instances left room to show that Yamcha was improving and he was doing things with the best intentions at heart. Punishing him for it is so strange.

Yeah early DB was primarily a comedy anyway so some goofs are expected, but otherwise he was always a respectable and strong person. But somehow the thing ppl took away from his character is that he's a loser that even the ppl he's been with since near the franchise's start just kinda tolerate his existence at this point. So weird. And even the cheating thing, very odd considering if anything, Bulma was the most likely one to cheat. Iirc, she was lusting after Blue while still dating Yamcha during that battle lol. She was kinda wild back in her younger years, but again, primarily a comedy. Still, crazy to imagine the mostly wholesome dork that is Yamcha somehow beinh a worse boyfriend than Vegeta of all ppl.
I actually wanted him as the final TOP team member after Buu eas left out, and i especially am even more annoyed at their decision to use Freeza after seeing how much of a role Roshi's relationship with his students came into play for his character in that arc. Yamcha is turtle school alumni too, but was shafted for lizard man's marketing power

    • @ShadeSlayer1911
      @ShadeSlayer1911 Год назад +15

A nice twist to that would be to have several students from his school turn out to be incredibly powerful, primarily due to his training. And because of Yamcha, it turns out that most humans have the capacity to become strong like the Siayans.
A couple of generations later, and humanity itself has grown much stronger. They are no longer helpless against villainous threats, and can fight to defend their own home, not having to rely on the aliens to protect them. And Yamcha was the one who started that. Imagine Jiren descending upon Earth, having been training in the time chamber for 10,000,000 years, deciding that he wants to take his vengeance. He's greeted by a group of 5 humans. And they use the Wolf Style martial arts to dominate him. By this point, nobody even bothers with the Kamehameha. It's old news and it's been power crept by the superior form of martial arts that evolved from Yamcha's Wolf Fang Fist. It allows fighters to take on opponents who are on paper much stronger than them.
Turns out, that Wolf Fang Fist was a bit more special than we all thought.
The descendants of Goku and Vegeta are still around, but they're kinda just normal people in the midst of this superhuman society. They're stronger than their ancestors too, but so is the rest of humanity.
Beerus comes around wanting to destroy Earth, but his Hakai has no effect. The collective increased power of humanity has shielded the Earth. Human fighters beat the crap out of Beerus, and send him off as a crying sniveling mess. Even Whis dares not to mess with humanity. A couple million generations later, and even Xeno is wary of the Grand Human Omniversal Empire. With beings strong enough to resist his power, Xeno has to actually learn to be diplomatic. Humanity continues to ascend into greater powers, and greater and greater gods are forced to respect them.
What can I say? I like pro-human stories.

That would have been an interesting angle to take, and feels in character for the pair of them, but rather than attempt to tackle the subject in any meaningful manner, Toriyama shows just how weak he is at writing relationships in any kind of competent manner and torpedoes the pairing with a "Yamcha's a cheater, lol" and that's it.

However I do think Yamcha as a character just needs to be occupied doing other things for his character to not be a ruining joke. For example have him finally settle down, find a wife and start a family or have him join the Galactic Patrol on a permanent basis and have him train with Merus or something. Okay so the Yamcha is cheating thing feels like it's referencing a scene in the original Dragon Ball where, because a fan club was starting to form around Yamcha Bulma was getting jealous of and angry towards Yamcha because of all the girls giving him attention, even though Yamcha never returned the attention.
A thief set out to steal the group's dragon balls and so she disguised herself as a fortune teller, lured Yamcha away to tell his fortune, and then attack him, while they were fighting Bulma saw him holding her but not the fact she was holding a sword, and the angle she saw them made her think they were kissing. Bulma would later slap Yamcha and break up with him, not letting him explain.
Given the writer, I am willing to put money down that Toriyama just forget about the part where Yamcha cheating was a misunderstanding and thought he'd already cheated before.

That just says Toriyama's too stuck in his ways honestly. Old people (especially in Japan) are obsessed with traditions. It's like religion for them. Meanwhile, the younger Toyotaro clearly gets what fans want and *tries* to act accordingly. At least he gave Yamcha more redemption than what Tien got in that arc. 🤦‍♂

I started rewatching DBZ and Yamcha's decline really started in the Android saga. He kept up with everyone on King Kai's planet, but when Vegeta came back to Earth, he spends a lot of time resenting him for his strength and resilience instead of training himself. There was even a point where he tried using the same gravity machine to prove he could one up Vegeta and almost dies. That the whole fandom won't let me forget the Saibaman incident? Well, that may mean loser to you but let me tell you something. Every morning when I wake up, I know it's not going to get any better until I go to sleep again. So, I get out of my empty bed, go and have breakfast, get in my car and drive by countless Capsule Corp signs reminding me what I lost along the way, just to enjoy the privilege of seeing my ex being married with children to the guy who caused my demise. I'll never be a major player in the story like in the old days, I'll never be seen as competent among my friends again, and I'll never enjoy the simple thrill of actually being relevant to the series again. But I am not a loser. Because despite it all, me and every other formerly relevant character who was demoted to comic relief, are still out there taking whatever our universe throws at us because the show must go on. And the fact that I haven't completely vanished from the series, you miserable memers, makes me a winner!

If there was some special property to it, then I think it could be cool. I like the idea of a martial arts technique being an ultimate attack, rather than just another ki blast. And let's be honest, most Ki attacks are just the same thing with different names, colors, and sometimes shape. It's rare in Dragon Ball to have truly unique ki attacks, like the Kienzan or Hellzone Grenade. Ki ends up being this super generic thing, despite the vast potential for it. One thing I appreciated about Gotenks was his super creative attacks. He creates semi-sentient ghost versions of himself that explode on contact. And his donut rings are a supreme form of restraining opponents. Even his volleyball attack was creative. Too bad he's kinda a wasted character then. He's treated more as a joke than anything, and that's a real shame. A character with such a creative moveset should not be left to the sidelines as a joke character.
That one fan manga where Piccolo has to be the Great Siayaman for a day gave Gotenks more honor than his entire screentime in Z, and possibly in Super as well. In that story, he's still a comedic character, but he's also respected as a serious monster if you piss him off. His creative moves get their unique showcase too, like Vegeta being trapped by the donut even after Gotenks defuses. It also has Gotenks showing that he doesn't really care about Trunks and Goten, because they are not him, which is super interesting.
More and more, I find that DB Fan Fiction is doing way better than what the canon has done.

I mean Yamcha as has been pointed out was strong, as a result fit and shown to have a caring side so its not unthinkable.
Once that was resolved with the help of Bulma, the interest by other females was still there and because Yamcha enjoyed basking in that attention ended up in situations he may not have intended.

Maybe Yamcha fusing Tien would be better or Yamcha having a Super-Werewolf would be cool too!

yamcha has very precise techniques that would be ideal for targeting small enemy weak spots

Give Yamcha a scene like Krillin, where he went up against Goku Blue and even held his own! just small epic moments like this is all we Yamcha fans want to see. Dragonball needs to come up with some concept to close the power gap between Humans and the rest. Piccolo gets free upgrades all the time, they invent one Saiyan transformation after the other. Do something for the OGs like Yamcha, Krillin and Tien

I mean, when your name becomes a verb that's related to failing very hard either in combat or just life in general, you know it's probably time to reevaluate your life and see how you got there.

Yamaha since the beginning was the big brother of not only goku and krillan but the series.

At this point, I'd say Yamcha's biggest victories come from Attack of the Saiyans, like teaming up with Krillin and Tien to fight "Jackie Chun" in the first dungeon or avenging his old gang from the returning Monster Carrot

Think next to yamcha is chiaotsu as after the saiyan saga the little guy didnt do anything sadly. Im not much into series much but as stated its people like you masakox that keep me in fandom with these what if scenarios and some occasional fanfics that peak my interest now and again.
