Al, Don't forget to put a screen on the gable end vents. Also filling the gap under the doors will help keep the critters out. Otherwise you are on the right track. Enjoy every video.
Some of the bugs you had problems with have larva which incubate in the soil, so you're not out of the woods yet.
@Anne Brossard Would diatomaceous earth help?
Check your mulch!! The bugs might have come into the greenhouse from the mulch. Just a guess but that many bugs that fast it had to be brought in some how.
plant rosemary and basil all the way around your greenhouse. they are natural bug and worm repellants as well as herbs to save.
Also marigolds and nasturtium.
I planted basil this year and something is eating them.
Also, plenty of dill and pots of peppermint.
That is interesting, I wasn’t aware of planting rosemary and basil for that purpose.
If you go on Google and ask for plants that are natural pesticides, you’ll come up with 8 different plants such as garlic, marigolds, petunia, borage plus 4 more.
Love the screen idea! But I’m thinking that might NOT get rid of the horn worms which burrowed 3-4 inches down into the soil for the winter.. They still will emerge as Sphinx moths in the warmer temps inside the greenhouse. Pesky little critters!
Gooood morning Lumnah family from Melville Saskatchewan have a blessed day
Gooood afternoon Lumnah Acres. Would it be worthwhile putting the insect mesh on the vents above the doors?
Cheers Michael (from rainy Scotland)

Good morning, perfect weather in SOUTH AFRICA!
Good morning Lumnah family and everyone else. If you want to put a end to blossom end rot Epsom salt is what is best to use. Also need to peel off those peat pots they keep good roots from forming. When using bone and blood meal definitely good to mix it in the hole so it is dispersed well and the roots are not just setting in it, and they will reach out to find it. The rip in the greenhouse needs to be fixed asap before it gets worse. Cause with each storm it can get bigger. Everything is looking good. Have a blessed day. 🍀
ADD a MILITARY style PONCHO that is also a TARP or a SHELTER to your Bug-OUT Survival Back Pack
Good, and a wire/cable saw. They're small, light weight and easy to use in an emergency
Shouldn't the netting put up in front of the ventilators of the greenhouse too?
The could prevent the bugs infiltrate through there, just a suggestion.
God Bless...

I think you're getting those cracks in the eggs from them landing on the hard surface of those black milk crates. That happened to me and I thought the chickens started pecking their eggs. Then the next day when I was in the coop I heard a thump-crack, looked up and saw a hen had just dropped an egg. So now all the boxes have soft bottoms.
Add some straw to the bottoms of those hen/egg crates.

I have 6 different kinds of tomatoes. 72 plants all together. I make my own pasta, bbq, pizza sauce. Catsup, soup, paste, sauce, and regular tomatoes.
I don't like eating them plain. It's lots of work but worth every minute it takes.
You know how and what and when, by doing our own gardening.
I do thirty tomato plants (6 different varieties) in a small garden, lots of homemade compost and fertillize them once a week.....The results are amazing with lots and lots of perfect tomatoes until the first frost here in the northeast.........
@@normanwyatt8761 I put at least 1 of each kind in my greenhouse. 10 by 20 foot. In Michigan where I'm at gives me another 6 weeks growing. They are about a foot tall now. Have to put in a little heat right now at night.
I started everything indoors 4 weeks ago. Put in greenhouse last week. Hopefully in another 2 weeks can plant outside.
Good luck this year.
Wow!!! I have 13 plants, 3 kinds. Might have afew Dr. Wyches later if they make it. Lol
To keep hornworms away from your tomato plants, try interplanting dill or basil; marigolds are also an excellent companion plant.
I hope y’all cut or ripped those peat pots b4 u buried them, has always caused me problems. If you get aphids or flying insects, use sticky traps, watch out for hair entanglement! Great videos
Good Idea......I always took them out of the peat pots anyway, as I kinda felt they would deteriorate too slowly......GOOD LUCK anyway.....

Wondering if the Al from NH on the Blue Cactus Dairy Goats sold list is you?! Did you get some baby goats from Arizona??💚🐐🐐💚
Hope is the Arizona goat.
Yes! He got 2 from them, already confirmed, can’t wait to see ^_^
Al, I’m glad that you and Gina found a solution to the tomato horn worm problem because last year they caused a lot of extra work. The sad part is that the adult form of tomato horn worms is Sphinx moths (aka Hawk moths), which are very beautiful animals - it’s like Beauty and the Beast is combined into the same species!
Aren't moths also destructive? Also, here in the UK we call the 'worms' caterpillars. How come you guys don't? 🤔
Kailand ~ I totally agree with you; the Sphinx Moth is beautiful. Rather than just becoming high-protein chicken food, can the worms be fed and kept in jars until they spin their cocoons? Do they eat anything else besides tomato leaves/plants/buds/blooms etc?
@@rachelm7525 We generally do call them caterpillars because it is the correct term - calling them worms is just slang.
I'd of wrapped the bottom around the wood a couple of times then screwed through. That would maintain tension along the length better and look neater.
good morning, now you need to put screen oven the air vents to keep the bugs from getting in as well as to create some sort of screen door for the big slider doors that allows you to keep the doors open if you want and not let the bugs in
Good morning Al, Gina, and Olivia. I hope you were pinching off the blossoms on those cucumbers you planted, the plant will put all of its energy into blossoming and producing fruit instead of developing a strong root system and vines.
Excellent point Gina! You don’t want or need a whole chicken all the time so piecing them out will actually save more food for a longer period! Great information!
I love the camera or phone you’re using...the clarity is remarkable!!
I trust you already know...you might minimize the bug infestation but like those pesky little mice...ya never stop em all!!🤣 love seeing Olivia in the videos too...she such a mini-mom!!🤣 greenhouse is looking awesome and I think you guys have done yeoman’s work getting yourselves to that year of food self sustainability! 🏆 well deserved!! Miss seeing you guys every but Wednesday and Sunday! I understand your reasoning but still miss seeing you guys.
About installing the bug mesh on your Greenhouse. Wonder if some 10 ft pieces of 1/2" - 1 inch PVC pipe, slit down the middle would provide a channel for the lower mesh hemline to fit snugly. With mesh snugly in place, simply roll up the conduit and fasten them in place with conduit strap holders. How to install neatly a by yourself??? The idea you came up here, seems to work well enough.
Kan I offer a suggestion you will need to consider bug netting on both doors. On my much smaller greenhouse I have 3 straps of bug net hanging over lapping fixed at the top with the bottom folded over with a chain weighting it down to the ground. Easy to move but drops back in place quickly. Don't forget to hang sticky strips until you introduce your helpful bugs. Good luck.
I don't write much about the videos I watch, but I just have to say about your putting up the screen. The whole time you were working on the screen, I could see the doors , were open.. I hope you don't plan on leaving the doors open all the time? HA! HA!!!
Hi..... AL and Gina nice to see you both, thank you for sharing your video homestead 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 🎥👍👍👍
Something to try is picking some bug off, put them in the blender with water, blend and strain. Then spay water on plants. The bug leave. Try it.
Can't find the roll of mosquito/bug netting or mesh, on your list . What is it called & were can I order it. Thank you.
Love the screen idea on green house do you have to do vents tho on top ?? And Gina the dressing looked great I'm so trying this. And hey I was listening at the end AL about your merchandise that you're selling. And since then Gina cooking which are apron that would be an idea to have a logo on apron just a thought. And I just love watching the baby goats . See you sat . Have a blessed day
Toasted tomato and cucumber sandwiches with a big ol goober of mayonnaise!!!!!!
There is a risk to disbudding as well. If not done correctly you can still have deformed horns growing and I have even heard of cases where the kid died from the procedure. One has to weigh the pros and cons of the procedure for their goats. I raise meat goats so it is not done as much for them. But those horns come in handy for handling the goats. I don't know how I would have secured my buck for a treatment if he didn't have his horns.
Are you going to put mesh up over the vents? As for securing the mesh on the sides the only thing I would have done differently was roll the mesh around the strapping then secured it to the wall above the eye hooks. My thought is that over time the wind will pull it out from under the strapping. Rolling prevents this from happening at least in my head. Time will tell.
Go' morgen Lumnah's. Good idea with the mesh. Dont forget the vents and the doors! Also the large gap under the door needs to be sorted.
A good tip for the Cucumbers: If you remove the flowers on the main stem and let the frugt develop on the side shoots you will get a slower production. If you let them grow on the main stem they will all come at once and then the plant will weaken. We normally have some each way.
Blossom end rot is more likely to be caused by stress than lack of chalk. Dont let them dry out and avoid sudden temperatur changes.
Al you can pickle your excess cucumbers - just like gherkins. I like to pickle beet and onions.
BTW people that keep reptiles as pets will pay around a dollar each for Hornworms. They are great for hydrating reptiles.
for the bottom i used a cork gun and sealant and a small roller... thick bead of sealant then roll the fabric onto it, then baton the over it works great! keeps bugs from crawling under neath it....
Did you screen the vents at the ends?????? that will let in bugs too don't forget! Also maybe screen the doors at the end for when you leave it open at times.
I've decided to succession plant this year so I don't have a lot groceries at one time. i am in zone 6a so i still haven't been able to put anything in the ground yet and my seedlings that i was hardening off didn't make it. they seem to get to leggy when i start them in the house.
Everything looks so nice. I love the high tunnel! I have heard that you should remove any flowers on new transplants so that the energy can be used to strengthen the new plant to get it well established.
Good Morning Lumnah family from Iowa! I was going to ask how your going to screen off the ends where your fans are but I see someone already has.
I grew up as soon as the tomatos were ripe they were sliced and served with almost every supper. Salt and pepper on them yumm! My sister likes them with sugar on them.

Hey Gina, something we make at home is chicken breast like you put in your oven tray but make 6-8 slits in it long ways
In a bowl cut up a large pepper, crumble some feta cheese, a teaspoon of oregano and 1/4 cup avocado oil, mid together and stuff it inbetween the slits in the chicken breast. It’s absolutely delicious and so tender
My mouth is watering!
@@samvalentine3206 please give it a try it’s delicious
@@emmmyy61 I must try this even with only the peppers.
Having one layer where you are screwing into is not good enough. You need to roll the mesh around a board then screw it in. The weight will pull it taut. The holes you cut will eventually rip more with the wind.

My zucchini seeds have sprouted, the potatoes are chitted, and I'm chomping at the bit to get my knees dirty as soon as the frost danger is gone. Nighttime temps are just above freezing for another week. Good luck with bugs this year. Climate change has made everything iffy. Oh, and OSB is $66.60 a sheet right now, but they have thousands of sheets. Price gouging much?
Right. Hope you get to start your garden soon
I gave up using peat pots, the roots don't seem to come through properly, you can mix the blood and bone together
I'd think if one cuts the bottom of the peat pot before it's put in the ground, the problem would be reduced. I'd also slit the side. That way the peat pot would not inhibit the roots too much...
@@samvalentine3206 with tomatoes I compared in peat pots to direct sow seeds into the soil, direct sow out grew the ones in pots 😊👍
Just a suggestion my friends you need to keep your doors closed the bugs are getting in through there have a great day
You should let the chickens into the greenhouse. They will eat all the bugs.
Hey, we had trouble with horn worms last year as well. Wouldn't their eggs still be in the soil? Wondering.
Get rid of tomato worms and cabbage worms with Trichogramma. Small wasps that are endoparasites of lepidopteran eggs. The major advantage of Trichogramma species as biological control agents is their extremely small size; adult egg-parasitoids measure only 0.3 mm in length, making them virtually invisible to the casual observer. You can obtain them at Amazon.

My small greenhouse now has strawberries, June bearers, and I have my fingers crossed that the mites, the yard is full of them, spiders mites also, won't find them. I used diatomaceous Earth and Neem power last year when the cats came down with mites but had to resort to $50 flea collars. So the diatomaceous earth and Neem will be my main defense as I grow my strawberries in fiber pots and tiered containers.
Get some Keats and then you'll have ginneas to roam your place and eat a lot of ticks. Our property has a lot fewer ticks since we got ginneas!

Even though those peat pots are supposedly degradable, sometimes they don't break down well, so hopefully your plants have strong roots! So exciting to see green everywhere!
I always tear them before planting so the roots have an escape route. Also never - never leave any of the peat pot exposed above the soil when planting. as it dries in the air it will suck the moisture out of the soil around your transplant. (Cucumber 24:19)
I have had the roots get stuck inside the peat pots so now I pull them apart as I plant them.
