Hey Englander, me wife is from Manchester (England), we go there every once in a while. Thanks for the tip on the 1/4 inch board. The fella I did this plaster repair for wanted to stay original plaster. Best wishes, kirk Giordano plastering
Hi Joel, thank you. It's a pride thing, but also if I plaster something that fails in the long run, I am morally obligated and responsible to go back and repair at no cost. That's how and why we learn to do our jobs so well. Best wishes in the UK where I know you guys work hard to make a living. Kirk Giordano plastering
Howdy Kevin, thanks for the shout out. Glad you enjoyed this how to plaster video, you must be working on something similar! Best wishes with your project and have a great day! Kirk Giordano plastering
I am extremely impressed by both the skill shown in the video and the knowledge and references to past experience expressed. It speaks volumes. Well done!
i agree quality trumps speed, i'm a drywall hanger myself, but there is alot of ''workers'' and a severe shortage of CRAFTSMEN guys who actually take pride in their work, if your good there is no reason you can't be good AND fast. i did piece work for 26 yrs. its the young guys who try to prove themselves by how much they can do, its us older guys who get sent back later to fix their crap !! good video buddy !!!
Hello Kirk, Thank you so much for taking the time to post this video it was very helpful. I really like the comment about quality union work. I'm a union electrician from Oklahoma City and after many years of making other people money I have decided to start my own business doing residental rehabs. The neighborhoods I'm targeting were built in the 1930's, so your video has been a huge help. It's awesome that you go out of your way to post these videos and help others. Thank You! Josh
Hey Don, I here you brother, sometime I walk into a house that’s being torn apart and start coughing right away. When I see this I usually tell the home owners especially if they have kids. “Tonight when its pitch black turn a flashlight on and look in the beam, that’s what you guys are inhaling, scary!” Have a groovy evening! Kirk Giordano Plastering
Hi Paul, the mud will crack if it's mixed too rich sometimes. (Too much cement and not enough sand.) I bought 20 premixed minute plaster for this repair. I just added water! Jason mixes very well as he has a lot of practice. Of course taping mud will crack like an egg if you use it for this purpose, Best wishes, Kirk Giordano Plastering
Howdy Josh Diffin, thank you. Jason and have grown fond of making these videos these days as before it was a real drag. Too much stop and go. Happy you find our videos helpful. I am in awe of you electricians because I know nothing about electricity except how to flip a switch and make a light go on or off. Best wishes and have a groovy day! Kirk Giordano plastering
Thanks for another great video-I currently hang and finish rock for a living and always wanted to try plastering, and your videos gave me a great starting point. You are one of very few true craftsman left who takes pride in your work.
Thanks Ken, I sometimes make it look easier than it is because I have my sons who can mix well which makes my job look sort of easy. Glad you received some tips from this job, that’s what these are all about. I rarely worry about showing folks how to plaster, because most folks don’t want my job. Best wishes and have a great day! Kirk Giordano plastering
Good morning Perry, thank you. We figured if someone were to take our advice its best show and explain how we do it in the plastering trade. Of course there are a few other ways to go about fixing this issue such as installing sheet-rock. Best wishes and thanks for the shout out, Kirk Giordano Plastering
Good morning bhumanecate, we didn't have that luxury of a drain, we used hammers to tear all the loose stuff of then we used 3,000 psi water strength to remove the rest and especially the loose cement dust. We went back the next day and swept out the residues. If it's not going to come off with a hammer and pressure washing, the rest should be fine. White Portland cement is white as far as it appearing painted, I never looked at it that way. Have a great day! Kirk Giordano Plastering
Howdy dude, In order to keep cost low I usually do same day plastering. My sons and I did this tear off and re-plaster in about 4 hours. (And yes, it’s done proper without compromising speed for quality) I sometimes do fasten a 3.4 woven wire mesh if necessary, but it was not in this case. Have a great day, and thanks for the tips. Kirk Giordano plastering
Tony, tony, tony, you’re scaring me. Trust me brother there’s no glory in being the fastest plasterer on any job. Old men work faster than me? That’s fine because I’m far from being a spring chicken myself. I’ve raised 5 young adults so technically I am the old man you are referring too. Lastly, you must realize we do things different here from the U.K. and if a fella hires me to remove a replace a plaster ceiling, Kirk is going to do just that. Have a groovy day! Kirk Giordano plastering
I love plaster walls! I grew up in a house constructed in the early 1920s (born in the 70s).These structures are very well built......much better than the homes today! Thanks.......and good times! EML Arlington, Va.
Morning DCBARNONE89, thank you, If it was built before 1950 chances are it's hand applied plaster, at about that time the rocket scientist devised a way to use liquid gypsum and make 4X8 sheets, that made it a bit easier for the average person to install and much more quickly. Cheers! kirk giordano
Morning John Tee, I have removed buckling or failing plaster and installed sheetrock to about 50 ceilings in my 30 plus years in this trade. However, what I usually do is what is asked of me. By the way it took 80 years for this plaster to fail and it's mainly because of vibrations caused by their beautiful but heavy and solid wood door opening and slamming. Very typical and completely natural. Thanks for watching, Kirk giordano plastering
Hi Joel Kane, thank you. It's what my son (Jason Giordano) do for a living. Thanks again for the comment and have a great day! Kirk Giordano plastering
Kirk your such a giving. Person, the imfomation you freely give the masses are priceless,if You worry about your baby,a house is like a baby, they only take it to the best pediatrician, making there 30 something house look like shes 21 , again, then again Then again, your like a doctor, a house has a Soul, if you paid out for That 30 year season, it Transfer my soul, you get the point.with that said thanks do you mind if I call you captain kirk, cus you travel from planet to Planet, a house is like a planet, each one uniquely different but generally round, keep all Us more inteligent, and fearless, that's how I feel Thanks bro.
Evening Roger, thank you. That comment just made you my newest and bested pal. 🤔 Bringing peace, love, and harmony back to the world of plastering. The complete plastering encyclopedia on video, by the plastering messengers of RUclips. Over 800 videos
Hey Paddle dog, I love using this pool trowel. Like any other experience plasterer, I can use whatever trowel I want and with either hand. I simply prefer this 20 inch pool trowel for most of my work. Thanks for the comment, I guess I’ll get back to the super bowl game, now that half time over with. Have a groovy day! Kirk Giordano plastering
Hey chronic dude, great question! Plaster board 4' x 8' x 5/8" thick sheet weighs about 70 lbs. I'm not comfortable hanging it with screws and expecting it to hold. Plus it's just too heavy. I have however on many occasions used sheet rock from ¼ inch to 5/8 inch. I have also used 3.4 self-furred wire mesh and left the cracked or loose stucco in place. All depends on what we have to work with. And more importantly what the home owner desires we do. Best wishes, Kirk giordano plastering
Hey Ashley Gullick from ESSEX, UK! Thank you and all the folks who watch our videos in the UK. Me wife's from Manchester, by the way. When we have the chance to escape and can afford it we go visit her parent s in Tewkesbury, Just a few hours from you guys. Thanks for watching and have a nice day! Kirk Giordano Plastering
thanks for your reply, im a plasterer from newcastle (england) and we all most always overboard this problem using 70mm screws using a 1/4" or 1/2" board. great videos btw.
Hey Gee Dubb, I look at this plastering job as getting paid to work out, just not at a gym. Best wishes and have a great memorial day! Kirk Giordano plastering
Kirk, Thank you for the video. You just gave me some useful information. 1. I now know how to do this. 2. I will hire a dude whose shoulders are in better shape than mine. Too many years of military and bench presses.
I've been plastering for over 25 years myself Kirk and I love every minute of it...You are truly a Master plaster and quite the entertainer...Great job on all of your videos brother.
Thank you very much for finding some time to post this video, very helpful for us who are kind of handy, but still don't know too much about fixing plaster wall :-). I do a lot of electrical work in my house myself, but dealing with the plaster after "fishing" rewiring is a pain for me :-). Wish you all the best in your work!
Howdy Mr. Shoes, I have used Structo-Lite many times and think it’s a great product. It has perlite in it so it’s light and fluffy like whipping cream and easy to apply. I used the 20 minute mud in this ceiling because I didn’t want it to hairline and I wanted it to set fast, firm and solid, so I could keep moving back to back or in this case bucket to bucket. If I did use Structo-Lite I would have still had to apply 2 coats. Thanks for watching and have a groovy day. Kirk Giordano Plastering
Hey Saigondisco, no need start flexing, we all have our own ways. As long as it's done proper life's groovy. Best wishes with your projects. Kirk Giordano plastering
Mr. Giordano: Thank you so much for putting these how-to’s on the web. I recently had a leak, and to repair it, the plumbers cut a 4’ rectagular hole in the plaster, then chisled into concrete block wall to remove the old pipe. They also put a large hole in the living room wall to expose the vertical stack. I patched the block wall with pavers, then put cement “wonder board” 1/4” thick as a base, painted Plaster Weld on that, and put the plaster over all. Worked better than I’d hoped. The patches will not be invisible, but its a lot better than the hole that was there. I don’t have your skill in matching texture, but I did OK, and my patch is much stronger than a drywall patch would have been.
Atta boy Robert, that's why we show what we have learned, there are many ways to skin a cat. we are just messangers. Get plastered like stucco Kirk and Jason Giordano’s sound plastering advice
Hey Karl, I usually use Fast Set 20, 40 or 60 minute plaster compounds, there are many brands. I believe the most popular one in our area is sold at home depot called Westpac Materials. I generally buy my material at a plastering and stucco yard, these products sometime go by different names. The bag does not say what it's made of, I just checked. Have a groovy evening. Kirk Giordano plastering
Howdy Manhillside, I was asked specifically if I would remove the damaged area and re-plaster it the way it was originally by the fella who owns the home. However, I would agree to keep it all original. On some older style homes, folks wish to keep all aspects original. Some folks do wish your way too, and I have done what you have said just not on video, yet. Thank for the comment and have a groovy evening. Kirk Giordano Plastering
Evening Juan Gabriel Benitez Balbuena, that's quite the name. I can't tell the two products apart. I used Westpac 20 minute patching compound as my material supplier sold it. I have used easy sand too but again I personally I can't tell the difference. but of course I'm just an applicator not a chemist. Thanks for watching and have a groovy evening Kirk giordano Plastering
Howdy s72880, and great question, I have said this to quite a few folks, they likely ran me out of town for just suggesting this same thing. Fact is most but not all folks wish to have the plaster in their home all original. Thanks for watching and have a groovy day! Kirk Giordano Plastering
Good morning Heather Celeste, This is an easy question, It's called a drywall patching and finishing compound made by Westpac. I like the 20 minute muds as thats gives me lot's of time to work with it. It also comes in 5, 40, 60, and 90 minutes, which simply means the time you have to work with it. There are many different brands at the big hardware stores such as Lowe's, and Home Depot with different names, usually same stuff. Thanks for watching and have great day! Kirk Giordano Plastering
Hi themrhelperguy, thanks for the tip, but I usually do what is asked of me from my clients. Best wishes, and thanks for watching. Kirk Giordano Plastering
Hi Corey Conder, from Jackson Tennessee, you are welcome. We simply show what we have to do anyhow as my boys like to do plaster work and video stuff. If it has taught you a bit of information, well that’s icing on the cake. Best wishes, have a groovy evening and thanks for the bone. Kirk Giordano Plastering
Good evening Michele, atta boy, Plastering helps us stay healthy plus we get paid, it's a sweet deal. Live long and plaster teaching repairing your number 1 investment, your home
Hi bhumanecate, no worries. I swept up the mess when it dried. I did not have access to a shop vac. If water gets behind the old stuff and it will, water has a tendency to loosen it up. If so, again no worries, just pry any newly loosened stuff off. Its better it loosen before you apply the new plaster. Your new plaster is only as good as what it applied to. Best wishes and have a great day! Kirk Giordano plastering
Hey Josh, I here you brother. Some folks ask me to remove and re-plaster the walls or ceilings while few others ask to apply drywall instead. We just do as requested. Most folk’s that call me usually ask for the home to be put back as it was originally was which was plaster. If drywall, sheetrock, plaster board, gypsum board is preferred they call sheet rockers. All these different names of plaster boards are basically the same gypsum product. Have a great day! Kirk Giordano Plastering
Hi Dave Ski, Home depot and Lowe's sell bonding agents I think they are Sika, Quikcrete and drylok which are all good brands plus there are many more. Thanks for watching and have a good evening! kirk Giordano plastering
Hi Marvin, the tough part is to know where to stop, that takes years of removing and repairing to get it right. Patchwork cost depends on what’s involved. On this I had to cover the floor twice bring in 6 A frames and about 10 plank. I charge accordingly, Sorry, but every project is a bit different. An average patch for a hole in a ceiling is $400 to $600 depending on circumstances. Thanks for watching and have a great day! Kirk Giordano Plastering
Howdy Dusty, Yes I have about 10 different models my favorite is the Bosch Bulldog extreme rotary hammer, its light and gets the job done. I like it so much I have about 4 of them. I also have a few different Hilti rotary hammer models (The T6 and the T7) and a few throwaways that are used with just air. I choose not to use these indoors. Best wishes, and have a good evening! Kirk Giordano Plastering
Hey telosfd, For this interior I just buy the fast set patching compounds in bags and add water and apply. I am using Westpac materials, they sell a complete line of chemically hardening drywall patching and finishing compounds. Westpac sells fast set 5 minute, up to 20, 40, and 90 minute mud. I used 20 minute patching compound for this ceiling as I had more than enough time to apply back to back coats. Have a good day! Kirk Giordano plastering
I bent nails for a lot of years. You know your shiet! And you love it! Great to see. Always love seeing you artists at work! I've been privileged to work with one or two like you. Thanks for always making me look good!!!!!!
This reminds me of rustic cake icing. I just love that comment on the discontinued 5-minute mud: “You’re the only one that likes that stuff.” That happens to me all the time. My favorite products vanish.
I see all those questions down below, about "why not use dry wall". Real plaster has character, better sound attenuator looks a lot better. I can always tell when plaster was replaced with cheap dry wall. Keep up the classy work.
Hello Royal dude, thank you for the kind words. If it’s any consolation, I don’t know diddly-squat about electricity except how to flip a switch and make the lights go on or off, we all have our specialties. Best wishes, and have a great evening! Kirk Giordano Plastering
Hey Kirk, First I want to thank you for the videos they are educational and at times mesmerizing Watching you work creating art I can’t believe the speed that you’re working..(Sometime its obvious compared to another person that is working next to you..) So thank you for your kindness You always talk about the materials that you’re using but for some reason it did not click in my head I’m always looking for plaster to repair the plaster walls I have in “the room of horrors “ in my house Naturally I went to Home Depot looking for plaster they have small bags of plaster of Paris I believe... no one knows how to use it or what it is for. I looked up online for places around here I found one place it was a little far from my house and they are closed on the weekend...so I let this project go I just Watched a few of your videos again ..you are talking about “mud” Then I read the comments and One thing I just realized Is that I have the USG Eazy send 45 and 90 here at the house Now I know there are many ways to skin a cat but should I use this throughout ? I have an area that the wood lath stop and the room continue in bricks Also, If i can’t get larsons at the store here in Michigan ..what product do you recomend ? Thank you for everything
Good evening, my friend. In the description, there are many materials in detail to answer your question. Many of the plaster materials are sold at your local plastering yards also. Note: to all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. This feature is miles ahead of any plastering forum. 🥳 Kirk & Jason Giordano Plastering
This is important, you encourage people to keep heritage lime plaster on lath which if well-kept is extremely long-lived (and blocks sound well between adjacent rooms and floors better than gypsum drywall.) I've got a solid 1920's home with some sags and cracks, maybe worth a go or get some help. I would spend days learning it just to have a fraction of what you guys know, thanks!
Good evening Jonas dude, thank you you can alway apply caulking if it's just cracks, Live long and plaster teaching repairing your number 1 investment, your home
Hey BloodSweat, I am using a 20 minute mud to spread this whole ceiling out as I promised the homeowners we would be complete in a day so they could have their entry way back. Thanks for the question. Best wishes and have a groovy evening! Kirk Giordano Plastering
Hi Ross, thanks for the compliment, were trying to be more step by step. Takes allot longer to do a job, because Jason has to stop what he doing and grab the camera. (cement drys fast) What I remember most of this job was at the end of this 10 hour day I'm sweating and really tired, my son looks at me in all honesty and says (why do you look so tired? I'm the one doing all the filming!) I laughed so hard I forgot how tired I was. Best wishes and have groovy day! Kirk Giordano plastering
Seems like a an art that is, sadly, going away. So much drywall and plastic materials these days. Guys like you are true artisans. And giving props to the guy who did it before was classey.
Afternoon James, plastering will never go obsolete. Bringing peace, love, and brotherhood back to the world of, “Plastering.” 😏 with over 800 educational and free RUclips videos, by your favorite plaster geek, “me,” and my son, “Jason,” the bearded plasterer.😉
Well done! I would have been inclined to take down the light fixture in the center of the room for the ceiling repair, but then I probably would have been saddled with the task of fixing some deteriorating wire insulation. Your knowledge and experience are golden.
Morning DriverDude100, exzachary, I do plaster work my electrical skills suck. You were right, that light was a real pain in the arse. Cheers! kirk Giordano
Love the videos Kirk I have been a taper for 4 years and started my on business in MN It is a passion of mine. I never knew you could use joint compounds to fix plaster very informational vids. had to subscribe because I don’t want to miss a single one 👍🏼
Howdy Ed dude, I find often it's best to mix and apply raw gypsum than to attach sheetrock, "gypsum" then mud joints. Live long and plaster Sharing plastering information, as the world can use more teachers.
i have done a lo of plaster repair but i uses fiberglass mesh, but now m gonna test the pink stuff…more importantly Professor Kirk stresses the set up of scaffold and prep work…don't damage the floors and respect the homeowner in terms of not making a effin MESS!!…..great work KG!
Morning Tommy Brando, I use Larson's plaster weld for two reasons, first it gives the plaster the ability to bond the to the timber wood lath, also it's necessary to press the new plaster through the timber wood lath creating a mushrooming effect above the wood lath, (we call this action Keying) plus the plaster weld also eliminates the dust that might still be on this lath from being used once already. IF THERE IS DUST on this wooden lath plaster will not stick properly and the key will be the only grip compromising the integrity of a permanent bond. Best wishes, Kirk and family
Well said Kirk…those guys back in the day were truly masterful with skimming that stuff on there back then. I've renovated 3 homes circa 1880, 1854, 1850…the 1880 houses plaster is still 50 percent intact in my apt..other half i re-did with 5/8's rock…the remaining 75% is toast. anyway's, you nailed it with the fact that the fella you worked for asked you to re-skim it instead of ripping out timber lathe and then insulating bc of the economy, etc. what you did in this video is show that it could be done without gutting in a very artful way..it can be appreciated either way. ..
Wow Tommy Brando, sounds like you've been busy. Good for you. what sometimes folks who watch our video's misunderstand is I'm bound by what a person wants and can afford, as I'm in the same boat sometimes too. What I want and can afford are 2 different things, Best wishes, Kirk Giordano plastering
Sometimes it's great sometimes it's a tad slow…the older i get it seems i get busier..also, when i slow down i study the trades..i've been studying the way you use your trowel….so i take the learning of that and try and keep it in mind when i'm skimming. actually i used a couple of 50 pound bags of Structo-lite (basecoat), by USG…whats do you think of that stuff? i'm skimming beat to hell plaster with it, but embedding fiber mesh sheets of 3' by 75'…opinions? that stuff is very cheap..
Evening Tommy, if your doing big walls Structo-lite is definitely the way to go, I don't use much of this material these days as I do same day systems. With structo-lite you can't do both coats on the same day, or you couldn't back in my days, but it is a great product for scratching complete rooms and coming back with a finish coat another day. Back in the days when I works union we used to have 80 pound bags of Structo-lite. Best wishes, Kirk Giordano plastering
Easy big guns, I’m just doing what was asked of me. Trust me brother there’s no glory in being the fastest one from start to finish unless you’re in professional race. Where you from and what’s a Yank? Thanks for the comment and have groovy day! Kirk Giordano Plastering
Mr. Therber2, I'm not aware of any negative comments you review received. I only joked with the have a good, bad day! Do folks send reviews directly to you? My sons take the videos and place them online I do the work and answer questions but other than that I am ignorant of other features on this site. I personally took no offense at your comment. In fact thank you for the reply and have a great day, Kirk Giordano plastering
hi,excellent video,i learned a lot.i like your easy style of speaking too.great, great info.i have a lot of work to do,and now i am sure i can do it. thanks again, ken
Again Good morning John Tee, again as I stated below, I do what is asked of me, If I feel it's a poor decision on the part of a home owner or contractor in regards to a remedy I'm not shy about voicing my opinion of a better solution as long as it doesn't compromise the integrity of the project. I would have done the same thing here if it were my own home. Best wishes, kirk Giordano plastering
Hi Ron, yes, the multi-tool can be used; it's easier. I found the way I did faster, but yes, it was more demanding physically, but I prefer to get it removed more quickly than with less effort. Plus, the multi-tool creates a shit ton of fine silica dust, not good either.😉
Howdy Leg Dude, I had an idea of what arrogant meant, but had to check google to be sure, what it really means, "having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one's own importance or abilities." This is me, it's due to my first 17 years of life growing up in a ghetto, where life was like living in a war zone, no joke, being poor was not so bad, however being afraid to walk outside and go to school year after year can do some real damage to a person's mind. I developed not low self esteem but super low self esteem, which is not doubt why to this day I'm a perfectionist and a worrier, still trying to compensate. things that make you go hmmmmmm. Cheers, kirk giordano plastering
Wow Kirk, I just love your work, I'm down here in Barbados , I do decorative concrete for a living and I like anything about concrete, keep on with your videos as you the man with all the info bro..thanks
Good afternoon Dirk, will do, my friend, thank you. peace, love, and harmony to all Sound Plastering tips for the DIY’er, apprentice plasterer or the Plastering experts
Howdy Ugsist, coming from a fellow plasterer, this is quit the compliment, thank you Live long and Plaster Kirk and Jason Giordano’s plastering and stucco video
these guys are great. when you call them and leave a message to call you back, they blow you off. find someone else to do your stucco and plaster work. plenty of guys out there who do this....
Good afternoon John, fair enough and sometimes true, I leave my home at 6 am, usually get back home at 6 P.M often I'm too tired to return calls, but do the best I can. My past 30 years of work ethics has paved the ways for us to be in high demand, which is a blessing I have earned, the fact that I'm no spring chicken and have still found time to answer more than 40,000 questions on this site and at no cost is fascinating as my boy Spock would say. This does not include the calls I do answer on my personal e-mail and on my home office phone again at no cost, you are not the first person nor will you not be the last person understand or care about another person's situation. cheers, kirk giordano rendering
Howdy Felix. Sometimes! For example I have seen some folks use screw to hold up loose areas on ceilings providing the screws go into the wood lath and not the grout lines. If you place a plaster of any kind on loose plaster it's only as good as what it is applied to. Plaster if different to sheet rock as it does not have a paper skin holding the gypsum together, therefor screws, have little value. Sorry brother. Have a good evening. Kirk Giordano plastering
I've always been curious about using 'hot mud' on lath like that but never did. I'm scared to take chances line that on jobs . I always went with structolite and then lime and gauging plaster or one of the pre-made materials like Kal-smooth, x-kal, or diamond. I'll have to give this a shot. Have you ever found that you need mesh for the field?
Howdy Timson, I have used those gypsum based products as well, I chose this quick set as the structo-lite sometimes, does not set up for as fast as I spread, which means a two day adventure instead of one. You have been using the hardest to work with plasters thus far, so this fast set you can probably do blindfolded. Cheers, kirk giordano
Howdy Doug, Thank you. I take it you’re about to do this same type of project, or you’re a fellow plasterer. Either way, best wishes and have a good evening. Kirk Giordano plastering
Thank you for replying! So, Do you think I should remove all the loose plaster/cement and then repair? How can I make the new walls white and still allow it to breath? I'm not sure if there is a paint for that. also, do you think I should power wash in the basement?....that would just put more moisture and water down there.
Hi Mr Giordano. Im a licensed plumber who just go into real estate. You seem like my type of tradesman; done right the first time. Wish i had u here in Boston. I recently renovated a house built in the 1920s down to the studs removing he old horse-hair walls and ceilings except for the stairwells since they were in better shape than anything else. Its only been a few weeks since they plastered over the stairwell walls and there's bubbles everywhere now where you can push in with your fingers and tear off the plaster with ease. Tear off anything loose?, Weld?, and replaster?.....it looks like they just sanded a little and threw new plaster over the existing old loose stuff
Howdy Russor, bummer dude, it appears they applied over a dirty or dusty surface and without a bonding agent, make them redo it and will help them as craftsmen in the future. Happy holidays, kirk and Jason's plastering video's
Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. thanks for the quick reply....long story short that contractor is no longer on the job, that was the least of his shortcuts.....i scored the loose material cleaned it and applied Plaster Weld....however the choices for plaster are overwhelming and learning from your videos its all in the mix....the scores are not very deep, maybe 1/8" to 1/4" max before it hits a thin plywood....the local choices are UniKal Veneer Plaster, Sheetrock All Purpose Joint Compound green lid, Sheetrock Plus 3 Joint Compound blue lid, or Easy Sand 45 & 90...which would be proper for that thin a coat?
Howdy bhumanecate, Here’s what I would do based upon your questions, first pressure wash all loose stuff off, if you can in the basement, I have done this many times. No, it's not easy! Then apply a white Poland cement plaster they are breathable. Best wishes, and have a great evening! Kirk Giordano Plastering
I have a fairly large plaster project over the original wooden lath. The old plaster has receded from the laths an inch or more in some places. Do i need to use "Plaster Weld" or diamond metal mesh in place before plastering so this doesn't happen again?
Hi enjoyed your video, my 1908 house has one plaster ceiling that has a hole. The laths have popped and pushed the plaster or broke the seal. Can I hammer the laths back in place before replastering. I want to repair as soon as I can to prevent more breaks. Thanks. Just wondering about the laths, being hammered back in is that possible. Bonnie
so far this is the best channel to repairing and mending my 100 yr old home instead of gutting all the hard work of the past.
Thank you for the kind words, no thank you.🥳
Hey Englander, me wife is from Manchester (England), we go there every once in a while.
Thanks for the tip on the 1/4 inch board.
The fella I did this plaster repair for wanted to stay original plaster.
Best wishes,
kirk Giordano plastering
Kool. I'm a plasterer in the uk. The pride you take in your work is excellent. Look forward to watching more videos. Thanks
Coming from a UK plasterer that a mighty fine compliment.🥳
Hi Joel, thank you. It's a pride thing, but also if I plaster something that fails in the long run, I am morally obligated and responsible to go back and repair at no cost. That's how and why we learn to do our jobs so well.
Best wishes in the UK where I know you guys work hard to make a living.

Howdy Kevin, thanks for the shout out.
Glad you enjoyed this how to plaster video, you must be working on something similar!
Best wishes with your project and have a great day!
Kirk Giordano plastering
Man, 20 minute mud. Total pro. You made that look so easy. I am in awe.
phuturephunk Easy big guns, this is what I do for a living,.
thanks for the bone.

I am extremely impressed by both the skill shown in the video and the knowledge and references to past experience expressed. It speaks volumes. Well done!
Morning cudacrusher dude, thank you,

i agree quality trumps speed, i'm a drywall hanger myself, but there is alot of ''workers'' and a severe shortage of CRAFTSMEN guys who actually take pride in their work, if your good there is no reason you can't be good AND fast. i did piece work for 26 yrs. its the young guys who try to prove themselves by how much they can do, its us older guys who get sent back later to fix their crap !! good video buddy !!!
Hello Kirk,
Thank you so much for taking the time to post this video it was very helpful.
“Tonight when its pitch black turn a flashlight on and look in the beam, that’s what you guys are inhaling, scary!”
Have a groovy evening!

Hi Paul, the mud will crack if it's mixed too rich sometimes. (Too much cement and not enough sand.) I bought 20 premixed minute plaster for this repair.
I just added water!
Jason mixes very well as he has a lot of practice.
Of course taping mud will crack like an egg if you use it for this purpose,
Best wishes,
Kirk Giordano Plastering
Howdy Josh Diffin, thank you.
Jason and have grown fond of making these videos these days as before it was a real drag. Too much stop and go.
Happy you find our videos helpful. I am in awe of you electricians because I know nothing about electricity except how to flip a switch and make a light go on or off.

Keep it up Kirk..Your attitude is a good rolemodel for young conscientious tradesmen, whatever trade..Best wishes from ESSEX,UK!
Good morning Perry, thank you.
We figured if someone were to take our advice its best show and explain how we do it in the plastering trade. Of course there are a few other ways to go about fixing this issue such as installing sheet-rock.
Best wishes and thanks for the shout out,
Kirk Giordano Plastering

Thanks for the tutorial! I'm in Oakland. Just bought a house with plaster walls and this is really helpful.
I love plaster walls! I grew up in a house constructed in the early 1920s (born in the 70s).These structures are very well built......much better than the homes today!
Thanks.......and good times!

Morning DCBARNONE89, thank you, If it was built before 1950 chances are it's hand applied plaster, at about that time the rocket scientist devised a way to use liquid gypsum and make 4X8 sheets, that made it a bit easier for the average person to install and much more quickly.
Cheers!

Thanks for watching,

Hey chronic dude, great question! Plaster board 4' x 8' x 5/8" thick sheet weighs about 70 lbs. I'm not comfortable hanging it with screws and expecting it to hold. Plus it's just too heavy. I have however on many occasions used sheet rock from ¼ inch to 5/8 inch. I have also used 3.4 self-furred wire mesh and left the cracked or loose stucco in place. All depends on what we have to work with. And more importantly what the home owner desires we do.
Best wishes,

Hey Saigondisco, no need start flexing, we all have our own ways.

Kirk and Jason Giordano’s sound plastering advice
Thanks for watching and have a groovy evening
Kirk giordano Plastering
Howdy s72880, and great question, I have said this to quite a few folks, they likely ran me out of town for just suggesting this same thing.
Fact is most but not all folks wish to have the plaster in their home all original.
Thanks for watching and have a groovy day!
Kirk Giordano Plastering
Hello. I just wanted to say i enjoyed watching this. You really seem to enjoy what you do. Thanks for the video!

You, my friend, are a freaking plaster master.
Howdy Rob Walters, dude you are on fire with that comment, thank you

Hey Josh, I here you brother. Some folks ask me to remove and re-plaster the walls or ceilings while few others ask to apply drywall instead. We just do as requested. Most folk’s that call me usually ask for the home to be put back as it was originally was which was plaster. If drywall, sheetrock, plaster board, gypsum board is preferred they call sheet rockers. All these different names of plaster boards are basically the same gypsum product.
Have a great day!

Hi Dave Ski, Home depot and Lowe's sell bonding agents I think they are Sika, Quikcrete and drylok which are all good brands plus there are many more.

Hey telosfd,
For this interior I just buy the fast set patching compounds in bags and add water and apply.

Hey Kirk,
First I want to thank you for the videos they are educational and at times mesmerizing
Watching you work creating art
I can’t believe the speed that you’re working..(Sometime its obvious compared to another person that is working next to you..)
So thank you for your kindness
You always talk about the materials that you’re using but for some reason it did not click in my head I’m always looking for plaster to repair the plaster walls I have in “the room of horrors “ in my house
Naturally I went to Home Depot looking for plaster they have small bags of plaster of Paris I believe... no one knows how to use it or what it is for.
I looked up online for places around here I found one place it was a little far from my house and they are closed on the weekend...so I let this project go
I just Watched a few of your videos again ..you are talking about “mud”
Then I read the comments and
One thing I just realized Is that I have the USG Eazy send 45 and 90 here at the house
Now I know there are many ways to skin a cat but should I use this throughout ?
I have an area that the wood lath stop and the room continue in bricks
Also, If i can’t get larsons at the store here in Michigan ..what product do you recomend ?
Thank you for everything

This is important, you encourage people to keep heritage lime plaster on lath which if well-kept is extremely long-lived (and blocks sound well between adjacent rooms and floors better than gypsum drywall.)

Hi Ross, thanks for the compliment, were trying to be more step by step. Takes allot longer to do a job, because Jason has to stop what he doing and grab the camera. Sharing plastering information, as the world can use more teachers.
i have done a lo of plaster repair but i uses fiberglass mesh, but now m gonna test the pink stuff…more importantly Professor Kirk stresses the set up of scaffold and prep work…don't damage the floors and respect the homeowner in terms of not making a effin MESS!!…..great work KG!
Morning Tommy Brando, I use Larson's plaster weld for two reasons, first it gives the plaster the ability to bond the to the timber wood lath, also it's necessary to press the new plaster through the timber wood lath creating a mushrooming effect above the wood lath, (we call this action Keying)
plus the plaster weld also eliminates the dust that might still be on this lath from being used once already. IF THERE IS DUST on this wooden lath plaster will not stick properly and the key will be the only grip compromising the integrity of a permanent bond.
Best wishes,
Kirk and family
What I want and can afford are 2 different things,
Best wishes,
Kirk Giordano plastering
Best wishes,

Love your videos. I use a multi tool to score the plaster to cut and remove it. Easy no blades and easier on me.Plaster on brother.
Hi Ron, yes, the multi-tool can be used; it's easier. I found the way I did faster, but yes, it was more demanding physically, but I prefer to get it removed more quickly than with less effort. Plus, the multi-tool creates a shit ton of fine silica dust, not good either.😉

ur arrogant straight to the point and very knowledgeable... keep up the good work.... :-)
Howdy Leg Dude, I had an idea of what arrogant meant, but had to check google to be sure, what it really means, "having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one's own importance or abilities."
This is me, it's due to my first 17 years of life growing up in a ghetto, where life was like living in a war zone, no joke, being poor was not so bad, however being afraid to walk outside and go to school year after year can do some real damage to a person's mind.
I developed not low self esteem but super low self esteem, which is not doubt why to this day I'm a perfectionist and a worrier, still trying to compensate.

This does not include the calls I do answer on my personal e-mail and on my home office phone again at no cost, you are not the first person nor will you not be the last person understand or care about another person's situation.
cheers,

Cheers,

I take it you’re about to do this same type of project, or you’re a fellow plasterer.
Either way, best wishes and have a good evening.

I guess freedom of speech and open debate isn't popular with the young'ns anymore then. I appreciate your videos. Take care.
Howdy Russor, bummer dude,
it appears they applied over a dirty or dusty surface and without a bonding agent, make them redo it and will help them as craftsmen in the future.
Happy holidays,

When you say 20 min mud are you using durabond 20 or similar.
Hi Randall, exzackory. 20 minute means we have 20 minutes before it gets hard, no matter the name of the product.😉
