why dont they put horsehair in plaster anymore?? seems like they had a reason to do it before… for those without plastering skills i put up 1/4 inch cement board and finish over that. thanks i learned lots.
Hello, yes there was a reason for the added horse hair and even human hair, It gave the plaster and stucco more strength. These days they make Fiberglass mesh, as it's easier to buy and add. I'd advise Sheetrook to cover wood keyed lath personally as the cement board is heavy and not recommended for ceilings, they are too heavy. Cheers.
I’ve been in the electrical trade for 24 years … I’ve worked with older guys just like Kirk , they are the best … a wealth of knowledge, a great sense of humor and a passion for his trade . Right on brother
Of all the home construction I've done and seen, over the past 40 some years ...... I've never, ever - seen how plaster is applied to ceilings, till now! Thanks for your video! It was well presented, and understandable! :)
Morning Carsten Hahn, thank you, I take it you have plaster on the inside of your home and are ready to at least do some patchwork, hopefully it's not necessary, but the majority of folks who stumble on this site, need to repair their number 1 investment and pleasure their home, Best wishes, kirk giordano plastering
Found you the other day…Thank God there are guys like you representing the working business man…i'm busting my ass over in NY, and surviving thanks to guys like KIRK!!!
Hello Tommy Brando, thank you, your comment means alot coming from the working class like myself. Best wishes and thanks for watching in New York City. Kirk and Jason
Kirk your a hard working man. Great job. I love seeing a real craftsman at keeping an old house true to form by making an authentic repair instead of just using drywall because it is easier and cheaper.
Hey Apaache dude, there little glory in being the best. Now doing it right, getting paid, complimented on procedures and a possible referral from the customer to their friends and relatives, I can relate to this. That being said sign me up as contestant, what can I say I love a challenge! Best wishes, and have a great day! Kirk Giordano plastering
Kirk, you are the Man of the Men. I do sheetrock, tape, and mud, AND stucco/plaster for a living and ... well you're the man. Your video crew and youtube posting crew is utmost. I wish we wern't soo busy "doing it," otherwise I'd love to have a beer with you guys. But, there are jobs to do. Are there not? I operate out of Palo Alto, work just as hard as you guys. So, keep up the good work. And thanks again for "yet another one." Kent at KJS Painting & Renovations.
Howdy Gil Velazquez, what’s the old saying out of site out of mind? I used to use structo-lite and diamond almost always then switched to the commercial types a few years ago when I was showing my sons how to plaster. I really should go back to the structo-lite plasters as they are easier to use, thanks for the tip. The next interior fix I’ll use these plasters, it’s be just like old times. Thanks for watching and have a great day! Kirk Giordano Plastering
Thank you Kirk for the wonderful video series on plastering. You're a natural on screen talent, with talent! You're work reminds me of an old school tile installer I worked with many years ago who installed everything on lath and mud. Americas great tradition of highly skilled and hand crafted workmanship is kept alive by tradesmen like yourself. God bless you and yours.
Great video. I had a hard time repairing a sheet of drywall on the ceiling. My little one left the water running on the upstairs bathroom and it got through the second the floor down to the ceiling of the first floor. Luckily I stopped it before major damage was done but the drywall sheet did get damaged. When I put the replacement, the new drywall was not even with the original drywall. This video actually allowed me to learn how to apply the plaster with several coats until it looks even. All I have to do now is apply the texture which I need to see how its done on one of the videos here on youtube. Thank you Stucco Plastering... great video and very well explained.
Evening Cyber Lobo, it's fellas like you who make this videoing some of our work worth every minute it takes to film and put on RUclips., Thank you and have a great evening. kirk giordano plastering
You rock at you trade. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of plastering ceilings. We are using your advice on the ceilings of our parents' 130 yr old house that we are renovating. Keep on mudding!
Evening Peter, the mesh was applied to the original ceiling as it was failing and another coat was applied to it. (Too much weight) That and the new flooring above plus other issues weakened it, which contributed to its failing. Have a good evening. Kirk Giordano plastering
great stuff Kirk, we are brothers from another planet; Been there done that, I was taught by the great Leo Ranieri of Ranieri Brothers, an old union company, I went to school with the sons during the the earlier 1980s..Great stuff and I have learned a ton ,,thanks Kirk
Howdy Ryan, it’s the 20 minute drywall compounds or mud they sell at Home Depot, or Lowes and all the major materials plaster and stucco yards such as Westside in Oakland or Close in Hayward. They have 5, 20, 40, 60, 80, and even longer muds. I find 20 minute mud just right for my speed. Thanks for watching and have a great day! Kirk Giordano Plastering
Good morning Kent, there’s always time for a beer, you buying? On this one Jason just turned the camera off, I walked outside and heard a big bang, my sons said dad, (As soon as we loosened the light, the whole thing ceiling fell on the scaffold). This is the reason I set the entire area with scaffold, too bad the camera wasn’t still rolling. Those boys of mine are very athletic and got the hell out the way. Thanks for watching and have a great day! Kirk Giordano Plastering
Howdy Phillip, thank you. This one had a lot going on but it gives an idea of how to repair the simply stuff too. Thanks for watching and have a good evening. Kirk Giordano plastering
Good evening Disklamer, too bad we didn't have the camera on a tripod, you would have enjoyed seeing half of the duel plaster finishes falling on us, we laughed it off as, shit happens.😉
Jesus Rivera, thank you. Thats reason enough to continue filming our work. As long as folks like you learn and enjoy what we already know, this gives us pleasure. Best wishes. Kirk and family

What I liked most was the metal mesh that entered the roof. Because appeared from the beginning that the plaster remover did not catch inside the planking of the roof. I do this when servicing Victorian wall as I did day before yesterday on my balcony. Nice video.
This wAs very helpful i appreciate you taking the time to do this. Im new at the diy stuff but i have educational training and this was very informative and clear
Evening Michael Dent, thank you, Informative and clear? I like that! I am a pretty simple dude myself, I try and explain it as best as possible. Thanks for watching and have a good evening. kirk and family
Kirk you crack me up! Found a roll of 100dollar bills, I found bottles of whiskey in the wall of an old home in Boulder Creek , early 1900s home . Thanks Kirk , from Big Belly Santa Cruz

Love seeing Lath and plaster kept instead of the quickest way-Good job,And i think people forget that different countries use different Materials and some methods to other countries, here they use plasterboard and only set the joints and sand,in UK They skim the whole lot.I am looking at getting back to the trade again but in a heritage situation working on only older properties Where lath and plaster and solid walls done with Lime plaster, too many people destroy their old properties with modern materials instead of the original.Great videos guys!
They are starting to get into the old style lime plasters in heritage restoration projects in the US. I am a gypsum base coat and finish lime with gauging plaster-guy, myself
HI Rick Holland, Structo-lite can be used, but can't be finished on the same day unless you're familiar with the accelerator additive. I used Westpac's fast set on this fix. It's sold everywhere. best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plaster and stucco channel

Skilled layering and float out of those layers. A lot of respect on that. Thankfully here in the Southeast I don't run across alot of the traditional plaster jobs, and what few I have, someone screwed them up by spraying asbestos contaminated popcorn texturing on then leaving the home owner with two options, overlay with sheet rock if possible or call an abatement company in to rip it apart and then for me to come in to redo. Since most of my companies work deals with removel of popcorn and "acoustic" ceiling textures and refinish work......and everyone up until recently had at one point had their ceilings remodeled with the mess or their homes were done originally by the build contractor for cost savings and time....anyway, newer homes that came with it and have minimal paint spraying if any the textures come right off with either a little moisture or scraping and then a little moisture, but if it was done over a painted or primed surface and then painted later for a cleaner look it's hard as a rock and will not let go of the surface usually so we check securement and then have to skim out the ceilings with 45 to 90 minute mix with as little lines as possible, and then go back with a smooth coat of ready mixed bucket mud with a pinch of water mixed in. Then follow up with using a porter cable giraffe sander, check with lights for blemished spots, and then start finish work with the primers and paint. After doing that a few times doing a fresh sheet rock install and finish job seems easy and leaves you with appreciation for the guys who do plaster work
Hello Rob Pearson, thank you, you seam a expert in sheetrock? Both require lot of real work and an even greater amount of time in. I just watched a sheet-rocker install the boards with his lifter, and had all the proper mud tools including the bazookas and stilts, was a pleasure to watch as he was the real deal, and made it look simpler than it actually is, Merry Christmas and a happy new year. Kirk Giordano Plastering
Hi Kirk , Good video , reminds me of a cieling I helped plaster many years ago , it was at the very top of a hotel stairwell , we cut carefully around the perimeter ( same as you ) and suddenly the whole cieling came down , and kept going , all the way down the stairs 😮 good times though
Afternoon Graham Johnston, the exact same thing happened with this ceiling, unfortunately the camera was off as it was, as unprofessional as this sounds really cool. Those two fearless boys simply dodged it then laughed as they thought it funny, good thing the scaffold caught the weight or I would have been buying a new floor. Best wishes, kirk giordano
Morning Sir Pryo, thank you, I do look at all of our jobs as getting paid to work out. Best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plaster and stucco network
Evening again Matthew, there are so many ways and muds a person can use for this type of repair, I have found this to be the easies and the materials available from Home Depot to Lowes and all the major stucco material yards, so I did this video for all you DIY fellas. Best wishes with your project. kirk giordano
Hi babak arya, I wouldn't go that far, but thank you, what this video didn't show was the entire ceiling dropped, about 600 pounds onto the scaffolding after the light was removed. There were three coat of plaster on it. My boys are quick and neither flinched or got hurt, instead they said, aaa crap dad you were right we should have kept the camera rolling. Thanks for watching and have a groovy day! Kirk giordano plastering
StuccoPlastering Hi Kirk, I am doing our new ceiling with Clay, hay and sand, the clay and sand are free from our land and the hay is bought from near farmer. I have done about 1sq. meter with tickness about 30mm it looks very solid and hard, it took 3 weeks to dry, I will continue the rest of the ceiling witch is about 35 sq meters. have a nice day Babak
Hi Lynda, I usually tape any areas where I don't want the dust to go. In this case I didn't want the dust in any other room except this one we were working on. Plus I had all 6 windows open for ventilation. The dust although you can't see it spreads everywhere and really should not be allowed to spread throughout the house nor inhaled, you never know what's in it. Want to see what your inhaling 24/7? At night walk across the floor, then shine a flashlight beam across the room now look what's in that beam of light, that is what you're inhaling 24/7 Best wishes, kirk and family
Yes put up tape and compound where the ceiling meets the wall. Just a tape coat of compound it will keep out the drafts and any dust from coming behind the crown.

Hi Kirk Pete here (again) Over here in the uk we have been stopped from using grinders to remove old/cracked plaster. We now use sonic cutters . Don't know if you have used them yet but they are great . There is very little dust and they cut very fast. Any way another great video cheers.
MrDjpete1 Hi Mr. Djpete, grinders do make a huge mess, I have used a Mulit-Max dremel for excellent results myself.Kirk & Jason Giordano DIY plastering tips
Hi Kirk,,back in the 70s, I used to use X-ray plaster in hospitals,,also I’ve used a special plaster to be used in squash courts,(special due to the ball hitting the wall whilst hot) May I ask if you have used any of these products in the USA ? No doubt many plasterers would find it interesting? , I’d like to add, That in 1960 when I started only the following materials were available to us for everyday plastering, Plasterboard,,you had a choice of 2,,1/2 inch or 3/8 ! Sand,,Portland cement,,,with a bit of washing up liquid,!!,,lol And for skimcoat,,we had a choice of 2,, Statite,,which you mixed, like piss,, that one you sometimes had to finish trowel the next morning,!! Or. thistle, which had only 2 stages, soft, and rock hard,!! with nothing in between,!! You would end up scraping it back with the back of your trowel,!😣😣 And thick hessian scrim for drywall joints,,,y that was crap, would show through for a pastime😤😤 No galvanise angle beads for us,,we used wooden strips,! 😤😤, Really glad to see you fellas have it a bit easier nowadays although it’s still hard work, Warmest regards from Dave from the 🇬🇧,,The 71 year old spread,👍👍
Good evening Dave the Spring Chicken Plasterer. yea, I guess we do have it easy, as at least we can control the set of any interior or exterior plaster weather portland based or lime, which is huge Not so much lime here as no one want's to wait the cure time, plus, there are more additives than real lime. Of course, all the veneer systems here have a bit of lime for strength and spreadability with gypsum. Obviously, the Thistle back then didn't have any accelerators or retardants so when it set and turned back into limestone the side of a trowel would have to be solid leats you lose the rivets trying to shave this now hardened limestone, here we can't sand or pull back on edge when it's gone. We just have to apply another coat over the set finish, such is life Live long, and plaster Plastering tips and techniques
Good evening C H, Sorry, but Iowa's a 31-hour drive for us to repair a ceiling. We try and keep the drive under 20-hours each way.😏 On a serious note, at least it didn't injure anyone when it fell? This one did fall on all three of us, but no problem, we just shook it off. Best wishes, 😏

What kind of plaster is useable for repairing missing plaster. I have used structo light before. What is the equivalent material to what we have now to use.
Thank you very much for all the videos! My wife an I just bought an older home that is in disrepair upstairs in regards to the plaster (104 years old, cracked and holed to heck). I've looked for 20 minute "mud" and just want to be sure I'm getting the right stuff (trying for 45-90 minute instead). What is the stuff you are you using from Westside?
Hi Jeffry Walsh, I am using Westpac's fast set its technically a drywall compound. Home Depot and Lowes sells the exact same product that Westside. great minds think alike, fools never differ. cheers! Kirk and family

I have a 5’x6’ ceiling to patch, and if I put strucco lite as my base coat, then 20 min. Mud for my finish, will it crack around the edges if I don’t tape it ?
Howdy Paul, if it were me, I'd use a 20-minute drywall compound for the base, middle if needed, and the finish coat. I have not had cracking issues with this type of patching, now exterior stucco that's a different thing with cracking. Introducing peace, love, and harmony back to the plastering world. Sound Plastering tips for the DIY beginner or the Professional Plastering experts
Hey Kirk, I just bought a 90 year old house on the east coast. I have holes with exposed lathe in the walls & ceiling. It seems easier to screw sheetrock into the lathe, patch the edges and skim coat. Am I missing something ? What is the disadvantage to that ?
Evening Peter Cairney, if this work and you can find the timber lath with the screws and understand how to apply a finish over the screw heads this can work, i I have done this befor. The project we did here was completely failing, separating in large sections. This project was beyond screw repairs. Best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering and stucco network
Kirk, Here in Portland, OR old plastered walls had texture. My '27 bungalow is flat & smooth in the kitchen, but little bumps like sand or pebbles (really small pebbles) everywhere else. Like a sanded stucco look. How do I replicate this textured look using Westpac's fast-set? Your videos are fantastic. You've helped me through various repairs around my house and I am forever grateful. Thanks! Matt, Portland, OR
Evening Matt Delay, easy question, place a handful or more of sand in you mix, look at the wall is question, if is a very light or a fine sand use silica, if it's heavy use plaster or oly sand. I have used every kind of san know to man if efforts to match certain patterns, best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering channel
Hello kirk. I recently plastered over my kitchen ceiling it was textured. I used some ready mixed joint cement, British Gypsum. I put on about three, with the last coat I try for ages to get a smooth finish with no gullys, I did a part and went over it with spray water then another part. It was about 20 sq meters, even after trowweling it for 8 hours I still had to go over it when it was dry to fill in loads of issues. Looks good now. Is this normal to have to go over work after the last coat? I had to sand it down a fair bit also... looked like a snow man...
Hi Thomas Shannon, theres no bigger drag than sanding down drywall compounds, except for tearing our exterior stucco walls, which is physically tough, dangerous and dusty too. Thomas, what you are doing simply takes practice. I can spread one coat of say, Diamond, or 20 minute mud over sheetrock no problems, however when you go over timber lath your first coat should be a flat as possible for a guild. I would have recommended Structo-lite as your first coat as it's easy to apply and is like whipping cream if you mix it well. If you have the need to do this again it will be much easier. Best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering network
Hi Kirk. Love your videos. I m just wandering would of been N easier if you put up a blue board and put veneer plaster. Would of save you mixing 20 bags of plaster. I got twice as big ceiling done with 3 bags of veneer plaster over a blue board. Didn't require bonding adhesive either. And only had two lathers to work on. Of course it's great to have stage set up. Kind regards Armen be/R1H-EY4oSOc
Kirk, Just left the army and aside of my fulltime job my wife and I have been buying multi family's. On the east coast we have horse hair plaster. Do you have videos on how to sure them up and finish them? Of is that uncommon on west coast? Either way thank you for the videos it's been a great help
Morning Arasimo, we don't use horsehair any more, now they have fiberglass fibers in the materials. Best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering channel
Hmmm...ponder are you adding any sand??? Structolite/restoration I always use Kirk...plaster veneer finish...aka...puddy coat... I personally woulda not used the high rib...go oldschool... On a different note...just browsing am I...kudos...
Evening Pong Ho Lee, excellent advice, or wear my expensive quality dust mask. Inhaling dust like this kicks my ass for up to a week if I'm not careful. You too much be a tradesman? Thanks for the tip and have a great evening. kirk giordano
Hello Albert, for small patches like this, nothing beats Westpac fast sets, you can buy 20, 40,60, 90 minute mud and so on. Plus it's sold at both home depot and Lowes and all the professional Plastering yards. Best wishes, kirk giordano plastering Tips
Kirk & Jason Giordanos DIY plastering and stucco tips Hey guys It is not branded westpac on the east coast but just ask for 20 minute mud. The stuff from lowes smells like shit (literally) so id recommend going to home depot if your on the east coast. Thanks kirk. You are the man!
Evening Mutiny dude, you seam like a rebel, I like that in a person. I usually buy from our plaster material yard myself. Thanks for the tips, i’m sure folks will listen no one want to work with mud that smells like shit. Best wishes, kirk giordano plastering

Howdy Kyle, absolutely, in fact you can use what ever size you comfrotable with. Live long and plaster Jason and I will teach you, “how to render a wall.”
Hi, Kirk and Son, will the cold joints (new material joining existing one) be visible after the work is done. In other words, will you be able to see lines like in the video? If no, then how do you hide it? Also, do you recommend sanding for more smothness if any? BTW your video taught me that only the bad part comes out and good part stays in. That is sweet to know because why would you want to mess with good plaster if not needed (won't make sense)? Thank you for the education. Monterey.
Evening Montery12 dude, excellent question, No the joints won't show if feathered in properly. A color coat cementitious finish used for exterior finishes would if applied in this same fashion. To try and remove plaster that is well adhered would be real tough so we dont. Most plaster with this wood lath will last for hundreds of years if folks are not walking above it or the home moving, as this vibration is what causes separating. And yes this product is not a veeneer plaster, so it can be sanded. Best wishes, Kirk giordano Plastering
+Kirk & Jason Giordanos DIY plastering and stucco tips Thank you for taking the time to answer, Kirk. On "joints won't show if feathered in properly," I'll look it up what you mean; unless you have a reference handy to provide me on how to do this technique properly. Thanks again. Monterey.
Howdy Montery dude "joints won't show if feathered in properly," means the same as blended in properly, just in plaster language. Best wishes, Kirk Giordano Plastering
Morning James Brewer, ceilings usually run about a thousand dollars, but costs depend on things like, are there hardwood floors to cover, how much scaffolding is needed, do we have to remove a ceiling, what level the work is at and on and on. Best wishes and happy holidays. The giordano family
James Brewer other option was to just throw sheetrock up well secured with long screws and compound it well. cost 1/4 of plaster and will last a lifetime. Plaster and lathe is outdated and not worth depending on as homes shift, people walk around
Hi James, I think I charge 1,400 for this repair. Also what is done that does not show is the complete covering of the floor with cloth tarps and scaffold with about 10 full size planks. Set ups a drag, but someone's got to do it. Best wishes, kirk and family
Howdy Mike, I brought with me a gypsum 20-minute compound, for a small patch. When we tried to remove a small section, the whole ceiling fell on us. I used what I had at hand, this was an almost complete ceiling. If I had known in advance how much would come off, I would have used Structo-Lite. Shit happens. Plastering tips and products by Kirk and Jason Giordano with over 800 video’s bringing peace, love, and harmony back to the plastering world
Evening warrior dude, I buy these at Westside Building Materials, located in Oakland, too far? No worries go online to bontools.com they are called bucket scoops. They use to be white and twice this size however a fella broke his arm with the larger ones and sued the company, must have won as they quit selling the big ones and started making these smaller green ones. Best wishes, kirk and family
Hi warrior dude, never let it be said that old Kirk won't go the extra mile to help a fellow plasterer or DIY dude. I googled www.bontool.com and typed in bucket scoop and it didn't come for me either, so, I typed in thier search box (scoop) and it did the part numer is 83-270-B10 and thier phone numer is 800 444-7060. Best wishes and thanks for watching. Kirk and family
Howdy Tommy Brando, thats whats it's about, finding work you enjoy doing to provide the means to live a healthy lifestyle. In my case to provide the means to pay to have my kids college educated and eat healthy foods. Best wishes. Kirk and family
Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering and stucco network Thanks for the vid :) this helped me allot :) Im deciding between plastering a celling rhino or putting in vanished wooden strips on the rhino boards, this seems to look way nicer but I wonder about the price and since I haven't done plastering I wonder if il mess it up or do it well , im a perfectionist so any bumps... well then it will bother me , question ? does this stuff crack ? I mean by itself due to heat or cold ? it can get very cold here like 11 degrees Celsius and can get hot, even go up to 42 degrees Celsius , just afraid of doing an awesome job and then have it crack on me :(
HI Angry Paintballer, plaster usually does not crack because of the heat or the cold, vibrations is what causes cracks in both interior and exterior plaster. Thanks for watching, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering channel
Good evening D Summer, I eat that stuff for breakfast.😉 Note: to all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. Kirk, I'm repairing a hole in the ceiling. The ceiling sheetrock will be screwed into the joists where the hole was. Its about 6' x 5'. How essential is using a plaster bonder on the sheetrock before adding the plaster? I'm using WestPac All purpose premixed joint compound. Also, it seems you just blend into the existing paint with the plaster...did you use plaster bonder on the existing paint?
Slap Stick Hi Slap Stick, for me it's imperative, I am responsible for everything we do. Unfortunately most guys don't use a bonding agent, the way I view it is a patch of mine fails and falls, I could be liable for serious consequences, this thought makes applying a bonding agent necessary for my piece of mind. Besides, a call back for more of my services beats a call back to fix any faulty issue I may have created. Best wishes, Kirk Giordano
Hi Slap stick I don't as a rule unless I am feathering in that area, but if you get any excess on this area it's no big deal as the bonding agent covers easily with paint. Thanks for watching and have a fantastic day! Kirk Giordano Plastering tips
Would the California one coat product work for the scratch coat? Or would how about mixing in some plaster sand with the smooth set for the scratch coat? Does the sand make it stronger? I like your lessons, It's like cooking shows for "real men" Thanks for all the great work.
talon0863 Hi Talon, I just googled the (California one coat product) it sounds exactly like the Westpac Plastering product I am using in the video, so I would have to say yes. FYI, you can do both coats the same day with this material, your not limited to just a scratch coat.Sand makes it stronger but you will lose the ability for it to adhere well and not be able to steel trowel real smooth, it's not worth the trade off. Don't add sand. Best wishes. Kirk Giordano
Morning mateusz kowalczuk, yes this method I am using is a one day system, there are many other systems such as structo-lite one day with a finish of veneer plaster which is a bit superior, but maily used for kitchen and bathrooms, however this method cost quite a bit more too, and this method required two days to complete. Kirk and family
Great video Kirk, i got a house which had rafters in the ceiling and we pulled them out and replaced it with plasterboards screwed into joists. After skimming the boards with plaster we noticed a few months later we noticed hair line cracks running across the joints :( Any advise? Was told this might happen due to vibrations and movements from upper floors when there is people walking around. Unfortunately your process is very labour intensive and could find no one that has the skills you have or the ones that do restoration are very expensive!! Other option is wait until your back in UK visiting your in laws in Liverpool hahah! Take care Syed from Leeds
Howdy Syed, I agree with the fallas who said movement and vibrations can and will cause this. We'll be back next year to help fix, but you will need plenty pints of the good stuff, FYI, my personal opinion is at this stage the project is complete, you can caulk and paint, bhut more than likely these hairline cracks will continue, they may be unsightly but should not be a problem structurally. I've heard good things about the mesh system but given that pretty much all the plaster had been removed from the lath, why didn't the owner want to have new plaster board put up instead. It would have been stronger in the long run and provided more sound insulation. Cost?

Hey Kurk, what type of mud do you use for the base layer agains the lathe ? A neighbor told me to mix plaster of Paris with the Green Joint compound. I was thinking of using Structo-Lite.
Hi Peter Cairney, Structo-lite is a great base coat. Plaster of paris sets too fast, it's o.k. for casts, molds sculptures and such, however I would not use this product for a basecoat on a wall or ceiling. Best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering and stucco network
Hi Kirk, I am in St Louis, the plaster cap of the midwest. What were your manhours on this project. I am assuming ,,Home Depot for product at 7 am with 2 guys, jobsite show up at 8 am, Tarping and etc until 9 am ,,1 hr. 2 guys, start job at about 9 or so,, 1 guy Jason mixing mats,, at least 3 hours for metal lath and 1st coat. 1/2 hr lunch back at it by 1 pm. 2nd coat is always easier due to re-heat. I normally spray mist water on left hand and trowell with right hand. 2nd coat at least 4 hours with t ups.. curious, is this a job you can finish in 1 long day ,,say 10 hourws, or so. curious. This is a job that I would bid at 2 days and around 1500 to 1750, as a day and a half job,, let me know , by the way my newbies are paid 12to 18 my experts get 24 to 28 per hr,,, very curious and LOVR your videows
Hi scott oppelt from St Louis, good question, we did this in about 8 hours, (I am relly fast as I'm prepared for anything) but like a dumbass I didn't do any exploration as the room was filled with furniture and babies at the time of bid. I charged between 1,300 to 1,400 I think? I didn't realize there were two thick skim coats on top of each other, only a fool does this. (Too much weight) 70 percent of this ceiling fell when the light was removed. (scared the ba jesus of us but saved a bunch of time) If there were folks sitting in there and someone jumped on the floor above 200 pounds could have fallen from 10 feet high on everything below including people. Back to my story had I known prior there were two ceiling's each about 1/2 think I would have charge an additional 600 dollars. Plus wire was necessary back then as it was for me to go this thick. Dump fees plus the extra 11 baggs to spread and feather out to existing, you know the rules, life as a bigtime contractor, you asked brother. Best wishes. Greeting from the UK Captain Kirk, long time no speak etc, you guys sure have so many different materials from what we use here in limeyland. I noticed the date for this clip is 2013, so now in october 2016 are you still in the trade or are you now turning burgers due to the downturn in the US economy? Just joshing with you, as I know a man of your calibre will always get work. Luckily for me I have enough contacts to keep me going but things are getting a bit tight as people tighten their purse strings. Work always gets a bit thin on the ground around this time of year also I don't have a massive workforce to keep employed like you do, I only have me. The expanding metal lath we have is a lot thinner than those sheets you were putting up. I actually prefer to use wooden lath but obviously it's a lot more time consuming putting it up unless you can knock up some full sheets of lath first but very often on the conservation jobs I work on you have to use a similar material to what would have originally been there as stated by law, but instead of the iron nails that the craftsmen of old would have used I use stainless steel screws or nails. For strength purposes it's better doing what you did with the metal over the old lath especially if people are going to be jumping up and down on the floor above. All the best to you and your gang and may your trowelling arm never fail.
Evening Peter, it is sometimes feast or famine for us over here too, I have many contractors whom I have worked for for years who like my style so at this time I can't keep up, hopefully it stays this way until past christmas. cheers, my plastering friend. kirk giordano
Recently Kirk i just cannot be bothered and want to spend more time developing my art like carving and cartooning. One year I earned more money than I had ever earned, EVER from working long hours and week-ends and as a result had a massive tax bill to pay. I didn't have the money because I hadn't put any aside ( something my wife does now) and had to take out a big loan. As a result I'm now working as few hours as I can, 5 hours a day or less and life is great, i get enough money to pay the bills and only take on lime plaster jobs and nothing that i don't want to have. happy Christmas Capt Kirk to you and your kin.xx
......and parking tickets. i totally agree with you about the taxes and we should all pay our fair share but what astounds me is the way that these huge corporate entities get away with what they do, just like all of us they must pay what is due and they have big accounting firms that help them to evade their responsibilities and it makes me sick. Recently we applied for a bank loan and even though i have no credit card debt, we own our own house, I have rarely been out of work and don't claim any benefits we were refused the loan due to the fact that I only owed about £20,000 in total, and because we didn't owe hundreds of thousands. I think it's time I tried a new career and become a coke dealer or bank robber. I would definately make a lot of money with quite low risks and both these careers are growth industries, so do you fancy a transatlantic partnership? It pays a lot more than plastering thats a fact and if you get caught you go to a nice cushy jail cell with a roof over ones head and 3 meals a day plus the time to read and write books about the plasterers art.
Hey Kirk you know what you doing you good at you good at Plaster and I liked it I learned a lot from you but you referring to studs in the ceiling called ceiling joists

Hi Kirk. Great job! Question....can you use pre-mixed mud, All Purpose or Topping for this application? I know it would be a one coat per day thing, but would want to avoid all the mixing because I work alone. Thank you.
Good evening Kevin, you my friend, have the hardest job in the plastering industry, I tried this but could not do it, "work alone," as it takes too much time. In answer to your question, absolutely, you can use taping mud. I'd advise getting some help with mixing the dry powdered plastering compounds, as once you do this, you will never again think of applying premade tapping muds. With your spreading ability/talent to apply taping muds, you would triple the ease and time necessary to complete any project. Just keep in mid, 20 minte drywall compopounds means if you use a clean bucket with a clean drill paddel, your plaster mud will set is 20 minuts, The same applies to 40,60,90 or even the houre and a half drywall compound. Try it, then let me know what you think, as you already pocess the hard part, the skill of applying, now combine the drag of addiung water to a dry mix, and presto, you will svave so much time in sveeral years to take a five month vacation, with the saved time. Best wishes, Mastering Plastering for the beginner’s to the experts
Thank you, Kirk. You rock dude, and have learned much from your channel. It has changed the way I do repairs and have learned many old world textures. Thank you for sharing your talents and wisdom. Cheers!!
Evening Kevin, no worries, as you are way past the next level of plastering. It's unfortunate that most of the brilliant drywall tapers have not realized their talents with mud could be enhanced with half the efforts with a superior product such as the drywall compounds, if so most would earn more dough, for less than half the time, and the best part of all, "no sanding." Sanding alone with covering all the rooms and clean up, takes more time than mixing these compounds. Best wishes, Mastering Plastering for the beginner’s to the experts

why dont they put horsehair in plaster anymore?? seems like they had a reason to do it before…
for those without plastering skills i put up 1/4 inch cement board and finish over that. thanks i learned lots.
my arms hurt just watching you
Hello, yes there was a reason for the added horse hair and even human hair, It gave the plaster and stucco more strength. These days they make Fiberglass mesh, as it's easier to buy and add. I'd advise Sheetrook to cover wood keyed lath personally as the cement board is heavy and not recommended for ceilings, they are too heavy. Cheers.

Howdy Tom, glad to help. cheers.👨🏻🔬
Evening Peter, the mesh was applied to the original ceiling as it was failing and another coat was applied to it. (Too much weight)
That and the new flooring above plus other issues weakened it, which contributed to its failing.

great stuff Kirk, we are brothers from another planet; Been there done that, I was taught by the great Leo Ranieri of Ranieri Brothers, an old union company, I went to school with the sons during the the earlier 1980s..Great stuff and I have learned a ton ,,thanks Kirk

I just watched a sheet-rocker install the boards with his lifter, and had all the proper mud tools including the bazookas and stilts, was a pleasure to watch as he was the real deal, and made it look simpler than it actually is,

Those two fearless boys simply dodged it then laughed as they thought it funny,
good thing the scaffold caught the weight or I would have been buying a new floor.

Great video..we are renovating our kitchen...where the crown moulding goes...should we tape where the walls meet the ceiling??
Hi Lynda, I usually tape any areas where I don't want the dust to go.
In this case I didn't want the dust in any other room except this one we were working on.
Plus I had all 6 windows open for ventilation.
The dust although you can't see it spreads everywhere and really should not be allowed to spread throughout the house nor inhaled, you never know what's in it.
Want to see what your inhaling 24/7?
At night walk across the floor, then shine a flashlight beam across the room now look what's in that beam of light, that is what you're inhaling 24/7
Best wishes,
kirk and family
Yes put up tape and compound where the ceiling meets the wall. Just a tape coat of compound it will keep out the drafts and any dust from coming behind the crown.
Great reliable hard work done. results spot on 👍

Hi Kirk,,back in the 70s, I used to use X-ray plaster in hospitals,,also I’ve used a special plaster to be used in squash courts,(special due to the ball hitting the wall whilst hot)
May I ask if you have used any of these products in the USA ? No doubt many plasterers would find it interesting? ,
I’d like to add, That in 1960 when I started only the following materials were available to us for everyday plastering,
Plasterboard,,you had a choice of 2,,1/2 inch or 3/8 !
Sand,,Portland cement,,,with a bit of washing up liquid,!!,,lol
And for skimcoat,,we had a choice of 2,,
Statite,,which you mixed, like piss,, that one you sometimes had to finish trowel the next morning,!!
Or. thistle, which had only 2 stages, soft, and rock hard,!! with nothing in between,!! You would end up scraping it back with the back of your trowel,!😣😣
And thick hessian scrim for drywall joints,,,y that was crap, would show through for a pastime😤😤
No galvanise angle beads for us,,we used wooden strips,! 😤😤,
Really glad to see you fellas have it a bit easier nowadays although it’s still hard work,
Warmest regards from Dave from the 🇬🇧,,The 71 year old spread,👍👍
Good evening Dave the Spring Chicken Plasterer.
yea, I guess we do have it easy, as at least we can control the set of any interior or exterior plaster weather portland based or lime, which is huge
Not so much lime here as no one want's to wait the cure time, plus, there are more additives than real lime.
We just have to apply another coat over the set finish, such is life

I have a 5’x6’ ceiling to patch, and if I put strucco lite as my base coat, then 20 min. Mud for my finish, will it crack around the edges if I don’t tape it ?
Howdy Paul, if it were me, I'd use a 20-minute drywall compound for the base, middle if needed, and the finish coat.
I have not had cracking issues with this type of patching, now exterior stucco that's a different thing with cracking.

Hey Kirk, I just bought a 90 year old house on the east coast. I have holes with exposed lathe in the walls & ceiling. It seems easier to screw sheetrock into the lathe, patch the edges and skim coat. Am I missing something ? What is the disadvantage to that ?
Evening Peter Cairney, if this work and you can find the timber lath with the screws and understand how to apply a finish over the screw heads this can work, i
I have done this befor. The project we did here was completely failing, separating in large sections.
This project was beyond screw repairs.

Hi Kirk. Love your videos. I m just wandering would of been
N easier if you put up a blue board and put veneer plaster. Would of save you mixing 20 bags of plaster. I got twice as big ceiling done with 3 bags of veneer plaster over a blue board. Didn't require bonding adhesive either. And only had two lathers to work on. Of course it's great to have stage set up. Kind regards Armen

Hi Paddy daddy, I think the blue board would be easier, I just don't hang boards especially onto ceilings, Im no spring chicken.

Jason and I will teach you, “how to render a wall.”

James Brewer other option was to just throw sheetrock up well secured with long screws and compound it well. cost 1/4 of plaster and will last a lifetime. Plaster and lathe is outdated and not worth depending on as homes shift, people walk around

Yes, sir, I prefer 20 minutes, personally. 💃
top notch job!
mach smith Hello Mach, thank you, Kirk Giordano
Best wishes,
Kirk Giordano
Kirk & Jason Giordanos DIY plastering and stucco tips Okay thanks, and do you recommend putting some on the existing paint which borders the hole?
Hi Slap stick I don't as a rule unless I am feathering in that area, but if you get any excess on this area it's no big deal as the bonding agent covers easily with paint.
Thanks for watching and have a fantastic day!

We'll be back next year to help fix, but you will need plenty pints of the good stuff,
FYI, my personal opinion is at this stage the project is complete, you can caulk and paint, bhut more than likely these hairline cracks will continue, they may be unsightly but should not be a problem structurally.
Cheers

Hi scott oppelt from St Louis, good question, we did this in about 8 hours, (I am relly fast as I'm prepared for anything)
but like a dumbass I didn't do any exploration as the room was filled with furniture and babies at the time of bid.
I charged between 1,300 to 1,400 I think?
I didn't realize there were two thick skim coats on top of each other, only a fool does this. (Too much weight) 70 percent of this ceiling fell when the light was removed. (scared the ba jesus of us but saved a bunch of time)
If there were folks sitting in there and someone jumped on the floor above 200 pounds could have fallen from 10 feet high on everything below including people.
Back to my story had I known prior there were two ceiling's each about 1/2 think I would have charge an additional 600 dollars. Plus wire was necessary back then as it was for me to go this thick.

I actually prefer to use wooden lath but obviously it's a lot more time consuming putting it up unless you can knock up some full sheets of lath first but very often on the conservation jobs I work on you have to use a similar material to what would have originally been there
as stated by law, but instead of the iron nails that the craftsmen of old would have used I use stainless steel screws or nails. For strength purposes it's better doing what you did with the metal over the old lath especially if people are going
to be jumping up and down on the floor above.
All the best to you and your gang and may your trowelling arm never fail.

I didn't have the money because I hadn't put any aside ( something my wife does now) and
had to take out a big loan. As a result I'm now working as few hours as I can, 5 hours a day

......and parking tickets. i totally agree with you about the taxes and we should all
pay our fair share but what astounds me is the way that these huge corporate
entities get away with what they do, just like all of us they must pay what is due and they have big accounting firms that help them to evade their responsibilities and it makes me sick.
Recently we applied for a bank loan and even though i have no credit card debt, we own our own
house, I have rarely been out of work and don't claim any benefits we were refused the loan due to
the fact that I only owed about £20,000 in total, and because we didn't owe hundreds of thousands.

Hi Kirk.
Just keep in mid, 20 minte drywall compopounds means if you use a clean bucket with a clean drill paddel, your plaster mud will set is 20 minuts,
The same applies to 40,60,90 or even the houre and a half drywall compound.
Try it, then let me know what you think, as you already pocess the hard part, the skill of applying, now combine the drag of addiung water to a dry mix, and presto, you will svave so much time in sveeral years to take a five month vacation, with the saved time.

Evening Kevin, no worries, as you are way past the next level of plastering.
It's unfortunate that most of the brilliant drywall tapers have not realized their talents with mud could be enhanced with half the efforts with a superior product such as the drywall compounds, if so most would earn more dough, for less than half the time, and the best part of all, "no sanding."
Sanding alone with covering all the rooms and clean up, takes more time than mixing these compounds.
