Hello ladies and gentlemen, In this video, we finish sheetrock with a lime plaster base and finish coat; no material can finish off sheetrock faster and with such quality as the lime plaster two-coat system is explained.
Two lime-based plasters are sold in my area; both are made by USG.
One is named Imperial, and the other is Diamond.
I have said this many times: lime costs more here, so it's not surprising that most bags say gypsum, lime, and other additives; what other? No doubt less expensive additives than lime?
Us plasterers know the inexpensive plasters are lime-based and are sold in abundance; in the UK,.
Here in the USA, we buy what's available.
Diamond Finish is harder than regular gauging and lime putty finish; in my day, it was 1 part gypsum gauging plaster to 2 parts lime; what is it today?
Who really knows? I'm an applicator, not an engineer, with no desire to invest the time to see what new so-called additive has replaced the costly natural lime.
Today, these same Diamond bases and finishes are still used in schools, hospitals, police stations, racquetball courts, etc.

Anyone trying this for the first time and copying your moves will find themselves unable to get out of bed the next morning. I've tried a little skim coating and it is unbelievably PHYSICAL! Love this video.

as well as an art the plaster we work with is loose maybe a couple shades thicker then paint. first timers are gonna drop it all over the place kirk throws that wall on like a first timer. i throw a 12by 12 room on in about 20 minutes two coats. its much harder then it looks
Evening briar Dude, when anyone starts to apply cement plaster at first, there are muscles in your forearm, wrist and deltoid and shoulders that you more than likely didn’t know existed.
These muscles are rarely used in everyday living.
Thus they will feel like they are on fire or swell up when you start to apply plaster, no worries, this is an excellent sign of unused and still weak muscles, not hurt muscles.
then when that beautiful pain is gone, begin again.
Your wrist, forearms or shoulders will burn, but that's o.k.
For the average person, it takes a week or two to get those unused muscles strong enough to move mud where you want it.
FYI, if you fall off a bike and hurt your leg, that's a bad pain or soreness, to strengthen muscles you didn’t know you had, this effort creates a beautiful soreness.
The art of stucco takes practice.

Totally agree. I was awful with a trowel when I redid my basement. Got much better when I redid the first floor, and even better when I redid my second floor. By the second floor, I was pretty confident in my trowel skills, was making far less of a mess and didn't have to do any sanding. Ive been watching your videos and have learned nearly everything from them. The one thing that is by FAR the hardest for me to get, is just the trowel and hawk skills. How easily he just grabs a trowel of plaster off the hawk in one swoop is incredibly hard to do. Ive gotten quicker and smoother at it for sure, but I still have grab from the top of the hawk and slide off as opposed to coming up from the bottom towards the material. Everytime I watch your vids, it amazes me how easy you make that look. That's what happens though when you have done that move 4 billion times lol....

Very excellent explanation and technique. I was trained with an 18" trowel. I never thought to use a pool or cement trowel. However I am going to give this a try. I can understand the reason for a partial radius toe and heal for the float. I think this will in the future, speed up my float coat by riding the high and low with out trying to change pressure toe to heal of my square trowel and refilling when the timing is proper. I like your technique and experience. I have been called one of the best in my city however I never claim this. I have been doing this 35 years and I am always learning new techniques I am willing to try. There is never the best tools or proper way. Only an idiot will say my way is the best way. I believe what makes a pro is simply this. They have made many mistakes and knows how not to repeat them. They dont cut corners (take shortcuts) or skip details. They take pride in their work and meet or exceed building codes. They are willing to teach because they love perfection. They are unbiased because they love to learn new ways and are willing to expand. Most of all they are impressed after the job is complete. They tend to look around a few times before they leave with no imperfections found. Big smile of satisfaction as they present their finish to the customer ;) Well done brother. I have subscribed to your channel with great enthusiasm.

I'm a handyman in Northern California about 4 Hour Drive North of San Francisco.. Back in 2005 I was approached by a customer with a newly constructed home. They wanted this entire home finished with smooth walls. (I'd never say flat.. ) lol. I flew to Peoria Illinois and spent 2 weeks working with a professional Plastering company out there for a crash course like you wouldn't believe. Long story short. Sorry for rambling, since I came home and slam dunked that job in 2005 jobs requiring that skill-set have been few and far between. Veneer coat plaster is not done in this neck of the woods. I've even seen Tradesmen working for the Historical Society charged with restoring hysterical structures in the city of Eureka with all purpose drywall mud over lath and plaster. Am I the only one insulted by that? It's sad.
My point.. I would like to use these skills in my personal home. But I can't find the materials. People look at me like a deer in the headlights. No one has ever even heard of blue board and they try to sell me all purpose every time I'm looking for plaster. Would you seek out the blue board and a pre-made mix or would you go back to hanging lath and make your own plaster with the lime and gypsum?
Good evening Chad, as I do any and everything. when asked for this interior finish, I say no worries I can do that, however you are right, not a big calling for lime plastering in my area too. Good thing I prefer working outside with stucco to fill in the gaps.

I love this guy, and this veneer is some awesome stuff. for sure Imperial is top notch. As for anyone saying negative things about Kirk, well I wouldn't respect them if they did. I put 16 years in with the OP and CMIA and Kirk rocks. every time I watch him I can hear my old journeyman in my ear. for sure. it's never easy being the spokesman between the old timers and the cub's (as they would say...probably about all of us if we're under 95. lol.) anyway gotta love this man and his family they rock. I still swing a trowel for my own work less and less as the years go by, and maybe for a few friends but Kirk has made his living doing this for going on 30 or more years. Plaster is not an easy craft, Kirk has the all around knowledge that helps to keep our trade alive. don't forget what you learn here. It won't be long you will be glad you did. always impressed. yeah jess, all those negative folks obviously came here to learn something. they are likely not as successful as they'd like to be so it's fun for them to make a punching bag out of kirk. those of us out there hustling don't have time to stop and pick fights. kirk does a lot of thing differently than i do and that's why I come here. If someone is going to show me an easier way, I am going to shut up and listen. no time to fight about the old way of doing things.

I have A confession to make to you: after watching about a dozen of your videos, video below yours popped up and brought me to a plaster expert in Scotland and he was using a bucket that I thought was pretty cool - a soft sided plastic/rubber bucket that you would find in the dollar store or hardware store - and what I liked about it was that it was big on the bottom so that I could clean out my 10 inch - 12 inch taping knives which is always a problem cleaning in a smaller standard compound bucket. So, I bought a couple of them and my birdcage paddle attached to my drill is scraping the rubber and putting it into my plaster. So I was hoping you, the expert - I love your work - which simply show us a video and tell us what you are mixing this stuff in because obviously, you do not have this problem

Wish I had watched you plaster before doing plaster repairs in 3 rooms of our 121 year old house. Each room I did looks a little better than the last but I did use the existing lathe once I removed the failed plaster and I couldn't believe how thick some of that was. My plastering has held up to 19 years of time so far but now years later I have a few more sections to redo that are the original plaster horse hair and all in the base coat. Thanks for all the details explaining how and why you plaster.
My in-laws bought a house from the 20's that has lime plaster. It has a lovely texture--even with paint. Only problem is, the plasterers used a very unusual finish. It has gentle undulations to it, and, they dragged their fingers through it at intervals to give it a texture. Probably sounds weird but it's so soft and matte looking it gives you a very peaceful feeling. Now I know it's lime plaster, but several years ago they had a pipe leak in the ceiling that required a long hole be cut out. It was impossible to match it with drywall mud and paint (now I know why).
I made some lime plaster from quicklime that's slaking (3 months at least) and I used a metal pan I use for crafty type things. I guess I thought it would dissolve like drywall,, but it is on there like glue. Very, very, *VERY* hard glue.
Evening Lisa, the slaking of lime is no longer necessary as in the centuries before, in the wording under more vies I did an hour long video on Real Lime Plastering that explains the history.
Now days, you just basically add water to the powders and it's ready to go.
The finish you are referring to is as normal as peas in a pod, in europe, they consider one's imagination the real test of skill and professionalism.
Here in the U.S. if the walls aren't perfect as one's teeth it's consider a cardinal sin.

Thank you. I've learned a lot. My house has plaster. It was built in 1950. I do see the board in there with the paper, but I noticed when working on the stairway that board plus plaster is almost 1". It isn't a lath like my grandparents used to have that I can tell. Growing up, I lived in a house my parents had that was wallboard. There is no comparison. I'm thinking about doing this over OSB though. I decided to do my garage in it and paint it, but I changed my mind and I sheeted the walls with the mill stamps all aligned and coated it with urethane hardwood floor, and did all diamond plate outlets and switch covers. I can mount anything anywhere without regard to where studs are, and the pattern is so random that if I move something, the pattern is so random that I can't find the hold back to fill. Now I'm thinking in the basement, I don't want to finish in wallboard at all. I'm going to try thin-coat over OSB except I'll be going for smooth as possible like my oil-painted plaster walls upstairs.

Kirk, I am a livestock guy. Different profession but same approach. I recognize men who who love there trade and pour their souls into it. You clearly have put your 10,000 hours in that it takes to become an expert and i want to commend you for it. In this day and age of instant gratification , it is getting more difficult to find guys that pay their dues to become true experts. I believe your video's have given me the knowledge and courage to take on a small bathroom project. If it isn't perfect, I will tear it out and do it again, but I will get it right. I may lean on you for advice. Im in the central valley and construction has fallen off in quality. I suppose that's due to the lowest bidder awards that have become the standard, so I believe That I care enough to get it right. Your videos explaining process and approach are a huge help. Kindness and gratitude in all things!

Sharing stucco secrets and or common sense plastering tips
I love the look of lime/marble plaster. I have used it on a few walls and polished it to a mottled sheen. If you blend colors it looks like marble. Georgeous!

Thats the funniest yet honest line I heard all week, "I hate sanding stuff," lol So do I Kirk! I hate sanding the compound on drywall and thankfully don't have to do it too often. Very good. In the UK and Ireland we mix it with more water. Spreads easier and can get it on much quicker

Hes got 25 years in and hes as good as me,,kirk shakes his head lol...Im a bodyman and sheetrock tape/mud nevrr impressed me..Now plaster does i just bought a 1900s house and keeping the plaster needs some repairs but dont want cheap sheetrock rather plaster
You should do both, attach the sheetrock then simply plaster over it with a lime base and lime finish.

What I like to do is mix the base mix with the finish mx and do 2 coats. I think I was doing about 1/3 base to 2/3 finish. I like doing the cat-eye finish which gives the finish some depth and you know it's plaster.

I don't know if it has been suggested to you before, but I would like to see you use
"critical light" to accentuate the DETAILS.
You are correct when you say the camera does not pick up well on white surfaces.
If you could "wash" the wall / ceiling with light it might better show the way you are spreading and smoothing the "mud".
I think it would show your technique for eliminating the trowel lines better.

In the land of oz in my area, we have solid plastering and drywall. I notice in britain they skim coat all their drywall to eliminate those ugly joints in walls and in particular, ceilings.
Solid plastering here is applied over a sand, cement, lime render in two coats. We mix gypsum plaster and lime to a ratio between 50/50 and 75/25 with th gypsum plaster being the dominant.
I am involved in renovation/restoration of older buildings, and find that 50/50 is as strong as you need to go with the skim coats. Sometimes we will use more lime than gypsum plaster to reduce surface shrinkage.
Guys who see you putting on skim coats need to realise it take years of work to achieve the "feel" for setting or skim work. You learn to know by feel how much you are applying. Skim or setting is a true craft that not everyone can do perfectly. It takes a long time to perfect. You learn buy doing, books are a guide, your vids tell the job from a proffessional perspecttive. But only practice makes you perfect. The darkening of the coats is so true, you put it on pure white, then in time marks and lines of dark colour begin to apear.
Howdy Grey Haired dude and me fellow plasterer, we have much in common, I too feel what we teach or say in any of our videos is just the tip of the iceberg, as nothing replaces years of success and a few failures, to achieving master craftsmanship as a plaster.

The most time consuming part of this project is understanding veneer plaster would be what they are, why they are, and do the benefits outweigh the cost, for example if this veneer plaster sets on an unused trowel or hawk for say one hour, one would now need a very sharp chisel to remove it or if on a wall is not at a level that was chosen you must respread the area as you cannot sand veneers nor can a stone be used to sand it, veneers are that tough.
I feel a plaster of at least ten years, would need an additional two years in to learn how to apply veneers mixed with the additional learning of what all the base and top coats are used for and different levels of finishes are and how to achieve before losing a wall. (getting too hard to work with)
FYI, although we make applying Stucco, Plaster Render and Veneer plaster systems appear easy, it usually take about 10 to 20 years of hands on experience to understand how to apply Stucco/Plaster/Render properly.

I agree about taping mud , did a room addition and the drywall and when I was done sanding the crap I swept up looked like I had a key of coke at my feet and I looked like frosty the snowman. So, yeah taping mud is a PAIN in the you know what. Great video .

Bead first then tape. Then run the field . 12 in trowel keeps your shoulder from injuries. Great information on the material 👍 👏
Howdy, my friend, I prefer an 18 to 20 in h trowel, personally but feel the size preference is an individual thing. I believe the more the body is used, the stronger it gets and protects again injuries, but again that is my mindset. 💃🏻
corner bead: spray/roll contact cement first, and like you said, bonding agent on top of the bead. i have found this prevents the bead from 'skidding'/'giving' and therefore prevents the plaster from cracking along the bead line when dented in the future, eradicates fasteners

I'm doing my first interior plaster on sheetrock ceiling. I'm going with bonding and diamond plaster.
Good morning Albert, atta boy,
there are two ways to do this, best way is to apply a base coat 1/16 thin allow to dry then apply a finishing coat which takes a bit of practice.
Tip when the finish coat starts to darken you have less than 15 minutes to water trowel it down, If it get away meaning it's too hard to brings back to life and trowel smooth, leave it alone and mix some more finish coat or even tapping mud then thinly apply over imperfections or what we call holidays, this will suck up fast as now the newly applied finish coat is absorbing the moisture out of anther new finish coat.
Another way is to apply just a fat finish coat such as 1/8 of an inch, however this also takes a great deal of skill as since no base coat was applied first, the one coat can blister, spider check or pop off in areas by over troweling.
Tip, if the finish coat does indeed spider check this means too much troweling, like everything new it just takes practice and a good attitude minus any fear as if you make a boo boo, it's easily correctable.

Morning Spencer, not trying to discourage you at all, however, although we make applying Stucco, Plaster Render and or Veneer plaster systems appear easy, it usually take about 10 to 20 years of hands on experience to understand how to apply Stucco-Plaster-Render properly.
On another note if you are a skilled drywaller, (mudder) you can do this, but the different setting of these veneer plasters will create issues that also require much time in.

Sanding is extremely minimal with taping mud if the drywall finisher is at the same skill level as you doing plaster Mr plaster master. You and your crew are top notch, i have picked up a ton of useful skills and applied some to dry finishing, theres ALOT more drywall mud used compared to plaster living in upper east coast.
I hope the young guys working with you take your wisdom. A pro in this trade always has a job. Thanks for the videos.

yeah, I can't stand sanding taping mud. Plaster is so much better and this imperial is sooo hard it is probably 100% more fire proof, in a real world application. Plus it resists moisture from humid climates like the East Cost. Rademann, My old journeyman, told me it was originally one of the responses by the plastering industry to compete with the new Taping Mud (at the time) but this is an expensive product. prob 3x or more. I think Kirk mentions it in this vid. A good craftsman can put the quality in our everyday homes just like rich people do, but you still have to pay for material and that is not free. If you can afford it this imperial is the answer. it is actually faster than drywall and it is so much better. I am still waiting till I can afford this in my house. lol. Might have to give up on that. but I did plaster the garage and the stairwell, that was work. amount of sanding for that???zero! lol. knocked off the klinkers with the edge of a trowel and off we go.

Even the Dryvit system.
Here in the U.S. we have many forests so at this time wood rules, for how long who knows.
As countries like France, where in the city of Paris they discovered gypsum one of the largest mines in the world such as the Gypsum mine which started Plaster of Paris which is still used worldwide for casts for broken limbs, this gypsum sets fast and hard.

Technically as you appear to realize here in the U.S. plastering, render and portland based cement plaster are new, about only a hundred or so years old where in the UK, the lime plastering systems are easily 10,000 years old, such as the great wall of China, the Roman day gladiator stadiums, pyramids churches the list is endless.

Hi Kirk- My question is this: My understanding is that gypsum and lime don’t mix well. Lime plastering over drywall causes issues because of the brown paper preventing the wall from breathing and can cause mold issues. Okay his is also one reason the use the acrylic sealer over drywall to prep for a lime wash application.
We don’t have ready access to the product you’re talking about, here- and going to the website I’m confused as whether this is gypsum based or lime plaster based.
What I have been doing is buying a huge bag of type ‘S’ hydrated lime powder ($12 at Home Depot) and a 50lb bag of 20 fine white sand at our local pool supply ($11). It’s used to filter pools and is great. The sand adds the strength you need.
If I am lime plastering over sheet rock- I have been mixing in clear Elmer’s glue to help mimick the same effect- but the functionality is lost because it’s not actually breathing. Typically you prime the wall with pva (which is what is in Elmer’s glue) to prime the wall and then apply the lime/sand mixture over that.
I’m wondering if you know if we can directly apply lime/sand over green board for tadelakt I. The bathroom or if I have to treat it like Sheetrock?
Hello Neuro, tye in how to apply a Tadelakt lime finish on my channel or Eco stucco, they are the same thing.
Never and I mean never, add glue to your material.
The bonding agent Quikrete or Plaster weld must be applied to the wall, or your material will fall off in less than a year.
Elmer's glue is for gluing paper together; it has nothing to do with bonding any plasters or stucco to anything.
It does not matter what substrate you start with; sheetrock or drywall both mean the same thing or even most cement boards.
It matters even less what the outer skin of your chosen sheetrock is, as long as you apply your bonding agent to the face of that sheetrock.
For example, if you apply or paint on Plaster Weld, your lime plaster or lime stucco will permanently adhere.
It's the exact same thing I'm showing while explaining in this video.🥂

Great job again ! I sure wish rendering would be more popular up here in Quebec. Seems mutch stronger than just plain plasterboard. Each time you hit the wall with anything it leave a hole and after a while screws shows up. I guess it's a lost art or maybe it has something to do with our cold climate ? It sure doesn't look like it takes more time that joint componding all the joints in 3 coats, so why dont we have it here ?

Can you put the imperial basecoat on and apply the diamond veneer the next day? assuming using plaster weld?
Good evening Peter dude, of course, you can, you can wait a year or more if you wanted to.
It's best to apply the finish sooner rather than later as the base coat may get dusty. Nothing adheres to a dusty surface.🤔
Tip, always mist your base coat with water before the finish coat for a better bond and easier finishing.

But man, Up and down a step ladder gets brutal over time...For the last 15 years I like using two of those platform ladders "Gorilla"...I bring an 8' 2X10 or longer if the walls are long...They really save time, once you set up...Or two mud buckets and a plank, but then it's that big step...It does keep you in good shape getting up and down though...:)

This seems quite different from what we are doing in the UK, and the prices are outrageous. Over here you can get a bag of Thistle Multi-finish for £7.00, which is probably about $9.00. I guess the pricing is a supply and demand issue, but one wonders if you'd be better off importing Thistle plaster from the UK.
You're obviously very exerienced, and I wonder if you can explain the difference between what we use over here and the products you are using. One obvious thing is the colour. Our plaster is a brown, very similar to a Wendy's Chocolate Frosty, and eventually dries a pale pink. It's a gypsum based plaster, and one usually does two coats, the second being added when the first is still quite soft, and suction isn't an issue with doing a second coat (though of course it can be an issue with the surface being plastered - we use PVA wood glue mixed with water to deal with suction). Then the whole thing is troweled over and over again until it becomes a glass-like finish, and with each subsequent troweling the plaster is more and more firm, all the imperfections and trowel strokes gradually disappearing. Your second coat seems more of a thin scraping coat, kind of like one would do with drywall compound. I find it fascinating to see what is being done in the US.
Good evening my fellow spread from the UK. Your cost reflects the fact that in most areas in the UK, they produce lime. It has to be exported here, so costs are inflated for many reasons such as greed and shipping. 🤔

Between one spread to another, if any product was mixed and I had to apply it not knowing if it were from the UK or here, chances are I would not know the difference of the products. Yes, some products are solid in quality, where others skimp on quality or suck to apply. Still, I would not be able to tell the difference as I'm an applicator by nature, not an engineer, and can apply any product.😉
Naturally, while applying, I might whine/say, "damn," this product sucks while spreading, "but not if I'm on camera," but will spread it anyway.🤔

This is similar to how its done 90% of the time in the UK. 100yr old walls in the UK can't be jointed; so they are thinly coated, or "skimmed", like this. First time I've seen an American do it. A bunch of teenagers did my whole house during the refurb.

Here in the northeast only econo houses use drywall. I've used both on projects and without question veneer plaster is the way to go. Drywall is easily damaged, veneer plaster is much, much harder. It does take some skill to apply it but it can be done in a day and no sanding is involved. Ceilings are usually textured, walls generally smooth but I have done walls with a texture as well which just about anyone can do.

@@StuccoPlastering You're a real plaster Kirk, I'm a weekend warrior that learned (sometimes the hard way) watching and working with the pro's when I built my house about 30 years ago. Took a few screw-ups to get a handle on things. You make it look simple as did the guys I learned from. It takes skill, especially if you're moving quick and doing it for a living. I've never seen a rounded trowel like the one you used but I can see some real advantages to using one.

I just demo'd another doozy of a wall, ancient, mushy chinese gyproc, contaminated,, no doubt with asbestos and stuffed with 40 plus years of rotten pink insulation, ragged poly, black mold and thousands of carpenter ants. F'kn gross. I am now like a hound dog, I can smell those suckers a mile away. And not to mention, at t $200 per metric tonne for disposal, I have sworn I will never put up another sheet of drywall as long as I can spin a hawk. Thanks for the lessons and peace and love and all good things to you as well, kind Sir.

Jay, I want to comment that USG's Imperial is not actually straight lime but contains gypsum without question. It will set up in a tub even if wet and even US gypsum does not warrant that it is lime. By contrast, Ivory by Graymont for instance is pure hydrated lime. The product names are confusing for many and most are 'mystery blends' with trade names. Only some are a pure product such as hydrated lime pure gypsum alone. Perhaps an episode could be done where this is shown with known components (assuming the manufacturers would ever divulge the ingredients!)
Howdy Paul, I'd use red top but it's not sold in the usa.
I know it's said to be sold everywhere, but when you get there it's not.
Could it be that they say it's sold there just to get you in so that you may be forced into improvising to buy something else, you betcha.
That being said it would not surprise me if they eliminate lime completely from all the products and add instead plasterrisers as it's half the cost and they say better than Lime. I personally can care less what they do or don't do.
I'm an applicator not their engineer or sells rep.
Diamond is the closest I can purchase so with or without lime, I'll use it. cheers.

Hello Kirk, Thank you so much for your videos I am learning a lot. A friend of mine told me to use the diamond products. She said at times she would use the base coat and other times both depending on the desired look. What she did however was tint the product with color instead of painting. Any thoughts, ideas or comments to help guide me on this?
Good afternoon Andrea dude, sure you can add colors, I don't anymore as it is a real science to get them exact, the folk who say, "I'd like some old world charm and exact match is not what I'm after," this I'll do.
I tell folks "if you want a solid color, paint it" as that's not what these veneer finishes are about but more natural warm lived in looks, like in the UK

I have applied all the veneers that have been manufactured and almost all are the same.
There is one that sucks but since this is a positive channel, I won't mention negative stuff like that.

Kirk: you have no idea how much we appreciate that you're showing us and sharing your expertise with this dying trade - thank you for bearing with our comments - I have a question now: how long do I have to wait in between the basecoat and the finish coat? In other words, how long do I have to wait before I put the second coat on to the first? And, secondly, I see you do not use a spray bottle or life and it up with water - when she starts getting hard on you, can you use a little water from a spray bottle?
Howdy Spencer, when the veneer start to set they darken, you have a bit of time to bring it back to life with any application at hand that applies water to the walls, thus bringing it back to life for a few minutes in order to remove the holidays or imperfections, video on it's way to show this soon.

Evening Michele, you my friend are a true plasterer, we ending up doing a level 5 on most of the rooms in this house.
Jason will upload it tonight or tomorrow, I had some amazing guys work on a holiday weekend to make it happen.
