Greg you mentioned that with taping mud you will be back 2 or 3 times well you are right if you regular joint compound but I have used 5 mint mud and no crack when I am floating out humps if I got a bigger area to work with I use 20 . Love youre work brother u are one the best tradesman I know .
Howdy Mario Dude, my fellow plasterer you my friend have a wonderful way with words. thank you, I've used 5 minute mud quite a few times it definitely takes two guys, one to mix and to more importantly run the bucket to me as daylight's burning and one of theos 5 minute just got used up for delivery, so 4 minutes to apply, you must be fast and have coordination, I love this feeling of having to rush sometimes, anyway. Another awesome demonstration...I avoid sanding as well and could never understand those guys who create massive dust storms while finishing drywall...I like to use a semi-smooth finish that only needs a quick trowel knock down of any crazy high spots then prime and paint...

You did say veneer plaster so it's a harder finish than a fast setting mud like usg 90 thanks kirk whenever I do repair work before my paint jobs I can look at your methods and fix anything exterior stucco-wise.

In England here I would killed the suction with pva glue then used gypsum bonding (2 hour set) to fill out the low areas then used gypsum based multi finishing plaster.
Kirk, I have an exterior area on my house that is soon to be a corner screened in porch. I have taken the brick off and have just the sheathing at this time. I'll be firing out the walls some and then covering with Hardie board. (I know you can stucco over brick but I've gone this route to allow changing windows, adding electrical and most important add dimensionality via recesses etc.) Through many views of your videos I stumbled on this video and have decided that this finish is what I want on the two walls I'm redoing. Though they are exterior they are under roof and behind screens so I do not expect direct contact with rain etc. Humidity will be a factor so I wonder if the Diamond brand veneer is appropriate? If not is there another product that is as easy to use as this appears to be?
2 sides to wonderboard..the other side is for plastering there are little holes all in it for the mud to grab, they gave you the smooth side meant to glue onto..

Thanks for all the informative videos. My home flooded this spring and I am now working to replace the bottom 16 inches of walls. Built in 1958 it has plaster over a type of blue board that came in 16 inch wide boards. I'm having trouble finding materials. I have drywall made for plastering, and Structo-lite but no place that I can find the Diamond veneer - what other brands do I look for? So far my plan is the Quikrete adhesive, structo-lite plaster (and tape) to coat out to close to the right thickness, then a veneer to finish. (and then texture to match all the different textures they did along with smooth) Any words of wisdom are welcome. Thanks! You-all are amazing.

Hi Kirk What product would you recommend for plastering wonder board in the shower ? Question - I'm hanging cement board all over my bathroom instead of using sheetrock because I live in south Louisiana and everything molds. I was hoping to do cement board + red gard + bonding agent + veneer. Is that practical? Do I need a base coat?I've seen other videos where you just skimcoated stucco and want to clarify. I drill a small hole, and insert a finishing nail for small projects, find a stud & use a screw into that for larger, heavier loads. Also use lead anchors. I really enjoy seeing how a true professional does this sort of thing.
Howdy Semid, just keep troweling and continue to use water this will happen naturally, if you don't use the water the finish coat will just burn and blister with possible spider checking plus no water when intentionally over troweling can loosens the finish coat often from the base coat. Hello Kirk, thanks for the good channel, your tips have helped me out when I plastered our entire master bedroom. I am now onto another project and would appreciate your input. I am putting in a woodstove heat shield. The shield needs to have a 1" air gap behind it for airflow overtook of the drywall, and a 3" air gap top and bottom. Originally we were going to do slate tile, but the tile company didn't want to tile the cement board to the base for the shield as it is free floating. Is there a veneer plaster or a product you would recommend that would be non combustible ? We were going to try and make the sheet of cement board replicate a large piece slate. Mortar was recommended to us with the use of various colourants, but I am unsure if you can trowel mortar like you can plaster without the risk of cracking. Your help is greatly appreciated!
Kirk, my man! I’m in the process of doing exactly what you did in the video-plaster veneer over hardier board around a gas fireplace. Prior to start, I made a sample board. When I applied the diamond veneer finish over the imperial basecoat, it bubbles and cracked as it dried. Any suggestions on how to prevent this? Thank you and I appreciate your videos! AJR

Nightmare when the walls that out, in England we’d typically use an undercoat plaster first such as bonding to get it as level as possible, then two coats of multi finish after to finish it up
Love your videos Kirk! We are plastering a gas interior fireplace that is covered in cement board. There is a beautiful limestone mantle that we just installed so will be plastering around that. Do I need to use a bonding agent on the cement board before the first coat? I bought the Kemset ekoplast to use as the base coat and then will apply a plaster finish on top of that. Will that work well? I'm not in a such so dont mind waiting for the various coats to dry. What product would you recommend for a semi-rough skip trowel finish? I got a bid and the guy said he would do the following: That is one coat of micro primer two coats of Matt venetian plaster marmorino/ compress/ wax. Is this better than the ekoplast base + top coat that I am planning?

Love your vids Kirk! I want to do something similar to this on a range hood above my electric stove. The range hood is plywood. Would I be able to tape the seams and plaster over that or do you recommend wonder board as a base?
Evening Breanne, you can but you would need to paper and wire the plywood then stucco. Mesh is for sheetrock while stucco netting is for plastering. If it were me I'd just buy a thin piece of marble or a different material that resists burning rather than go through all the work for stucco. Peace, love with happiness to all. Hi Kirk. Don't know if you are still checking this video, but I had such a hard time getting the plaster onto hardieboard. The plaster dried as soon as I applied it making it difficult to work the plaster. I tried spraying it with water, but ended up with rather rough looking plaster, which is okay but not the look I was going for. My plaster looked about the consistency of what you are applying. Any ideas what could have been going on with the drying issue?
Good evening Cynthia, of course, I know what happened two things, your mix was setting too fast, and the second was the existing wall was too hot or dry, so it sucked the moister out of what you troweled on too fast. The bonding agent Kirk applied also kills some of the suction. As far as veneer plaster setting too fast, don't over mix and use COLD water. The warmer the water, the faster the set. Also clean, clean, clean, equipment to avoid contamination.

Evening Nadia, cement plaster will adhere to cement board by suction as they are both cementitious, no need for a bonding agent. I'd recommend rapid set cement stucco, I prefer to use bonding agents as sometimes the cement boards can be dirty thus the stucco won't adhere well, if you do choose a bonding agent, quikrete or Larson's are perfect. Okay so I hope you can answer my question, we read all over the internet to see if we could use Hardi backer on all walls in our bathroom and they said yes, mainly because we wanted to tile the whole bathroom, but now we realized we fell short and our budget won’t cover all the tile in our bathroom(had an emergency surgery for father in law which took most of our savings) My dilemma: we installed the Hardi backer with the square side out and not the smooth side out. We bought enough tiles for the shower/tub area only. But the rest of the bathroom now won’t be tiled. We spoke with someone to see what the price difference would be and the plaster would be about $2,000 less than if we chose to buy tile as we had originally planned. What brand would you recommend using over this? We want to texturize it after to maybe hide imperfections if there are any so it wouldn’t be a smooth finish after. We really don’t know what to do at this point. Please help! Thank you!
I noticed in a video that Kirk recommended "Structo-lite" brand because it handles moisture (bathroom) better than other plasters. It sets in about 3-5 hours.

Good Morning Frost dude, as a rule, I rarely drop much mud, when I do I usually leave it alone, but also realize if you just dropped some mud and it's clean it can be used again. Live long and plaster Sharing the plastering knowledge
What I mean to say is this. If you mix drywall mud with mixed up 90 minute mud and combine them together, they won't crack no matter how thick you make it.

Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. I realize you don't do taping muds. But it's still good info. I never use 20. It only makes sense if you temper mud that you use minimum of 45 minutes so you have some working time. 90 minutes is really like an hour. And 45 is like 20-25 minutes of working time. Also it makes the mud harder. But not as hard as a veneer plaster.

Hi, if you use plaster round a fire then it cracks. I'm a chimney specialist. Should use k-rend sheet mesh. Just like skrim tape but a meter wide in a 50m roll. Holds it better.

The plaster I use takes a long time to cure and required wet sanding to finish. It is a modified Hydrocal. thank you!!
Howdy and happy Easter Mellissa, if you use cement board as your substrate you don't need a bonding agent, however, the bonding agent will slow the set time of you plaster a lot longer as the bonding agent will kill the suction. If you want your imitation Marble to set or dry faster don't apply the bonding agent as cement board is porous, which means it absorbs moister. Hi guys, thank you for all these videos. I am doing pretty much exactly the same thing as in this video. Hardiebacker cement board on fireplace below mantle and either regular drywall or blueboard (if I can even find it locally) above mantle. My plan is to plaster top (drywall) and bottom (cement board) using larsons plaster weld , then structolite then finish with either diamond finish or imperial finish (if I can find either finish locally). Does this seem like a good plan to you? Any suggestions/alternatives? Thank you for your time!

@@jasonmorley2359 hey Jason, I had to use cement board on bottom to be non combustible. I could also use it above mantel but drywall is just easier to work with and both surfaces will be plastered over so you will never know the difference. And fyi I'm now going to use imperial veneer base coat followed by diamond veneer finish. No longer using structolite.

Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Great tip on the corners. They went on nicely. Just tried my first coat but ended up scraping it all off because it was starting to crack and heave all over. I'm using USG diamond venneer plaster at a peanut butter consistency over cement board. What can I do to prevent?

I’m still unsure what the veneer plaster is in comparison to what we use in England. It looks completely different to multi finish which is what we skim coat with. Same with your base coat, looks nothing like our bonding or hardwall backing coat. The only thing it’s similar to is the carlite ultra finish which is Grey and really creamy to use for the top coat
Hello, my fellow plasterer in the UK; both multi-finish and this lime plaster are so similar that if someone mixed it for us, neither of us could tell what was spreading. I this video, I used Structo-Lite 50 lb. Basecoat Plaster is mill-mixed perlite-aggregate gypsum plaster, with accelerators as I wanted my basecoat to set within minutes, not the three to five hours it usually takes. Then when the basecoat was set, we applied or spread a finished coat of Diamond lime plaster.

Don't know if this was asked or mentioned in this or another video. The amazon link shows 13 different Kraft trowel sizes. Can you specify which size trowel is being used?
Good Morning Justin dude, there is a wide variety of trowels, I would suggest a 14X5 as it's a medium sized trowel, Some beginners may use a 12X5, I find this small trowel does not hold enough mud and waists too much mud as it's not long enough, then there are the folks like me who prefer 16 to 18-inch lengths as they hold a lot but are a bit tougher to control. Hi, Kirk. Thanks for your videos. I'm working on a fireplace just like this, but I can't find any stores that sell the durock recommended Diamond Basecoat and Imperial Finish coat. All I can find online is the Imperial Basecoat and Diamond Finish. Is it okay to swap out the Imperial/Diamond from what is recommended? (And I will buy my tools through your Amazon links as a thank you for your help!)

@StuccoPlastering I'm a tile guy so I have experience with cement board, I already installed two layers of the black paper on the plywood wall now to hang cement board and stucco it... the c board should be like my scratch coat and brown coat in one correct?
@ Correctomundo, if possible stagger the boards use nails that are long enough so the at last 7/8 of the leg goes into the stud and lastly use a heavy duty fiber-glass mesh tape for your joints. FYI, there is no need to apply two coats either, one skim coat about a half inch is all that’s necessary. Cheers 😉
Hello Kirk, I am remodeling my basement and I am right now at finishing ( closing) my walls but I do not like drywall. Is it possible to put cement boards on the walls and then to plaster them with Venetian Plaster? Is this a good idea or something similar you did on this fireplace. Greetings Music dude, it's possible but far from practical. If it were me, I'd hang sheetrock instead, if you can't find the blue or purple board hang regular sheetrock. I have a question that I hope you'll answer for me. I have so little money but I really need to replace my shower walls. I was thinking about using the same cement board you used in this video them applying a smooth cement to it then sealing it. Do you think that would work? I really can't afford to tile and don't want to use those ugly shower wall panels. What are your thoughts? I'd be grateful for your input. Awesome video by the way!
Howdy Bailey, sorry but stay away from all types plasters, in a shower. this includes all Structo-lite and plaster of Paris, these are both gypsum based, and never used in a shower. You can apply lime based plaster although I don't anymore, as even these lime plasters mold fast and must be sealed every 6 months, who has time for this nonsense, either tile or attach the plastic shower sheets. You will like me still have to re-caulk every few years but your walls won't mold within a few months like every plaster known to man. best wishes, Kirk Giordano Plastering
Tiles are sort of the cheap part. You can get cheapo but "good enough" 12x12s from Lowes or HD for $.69 or so per square foot. I don't know the exact size, but let's say a 3x3 shower with 8 foot walls. 72 square feet, so right about $50 for tiles. Figure two $15 bags of thinset, one $15 bag of grout, one $15 thing of grout sealer, you're at $110 total for the tile material whereas most crappy plastic surrounds cost more. I know our garbage plastic tub surround we threw out was $100. The only difference with the plastic surrounds is you can mount them to normal drywall (you need a $15 tub of mastic and v notch trowel to mount it correctly, though) whereas tile needs the cement boards (which cost about double per square foot compared to drywall, but at least are easier to transport by car due to being 3x5...) For mold and mildew and tiles, though, you ideally want a surface applied waterproofer like Aquadefense or Redgard, basically liquid rubber you brush onto the cement board and inbetween sealing all the seams and joints (with the joints thinsetted with mesh tape together.) It would add $50 but really guarantees the reliability of everything and not getting mold. You can as well use plastic sheeting behind the cement boards (cheaper) instead of this surface liquid, but the problem with that is it needs to be secure and watertight before putting cement boards up, and it's sorta impossible with screwholes/etc. The other problem is the shower walls dry out slower with plastic (or in the old days, tar paper) compared to liquid waterproofer. The cement boards are not waterproof, they simply don't disintegrate with water contact like drywall does. Water will still eventually permeate them, and go to your studs/etc. My first plaster tryout was on a scrap of Hardibacker, and a single Hardibacker sheet easily can absorb probably two quarts of water no problem, I had to spray over a quart to get Structolite to stick with no bonding agent. Think of showers now, and how much water would get absorbed in say, a house with kids, and quickly you could see why waterproofing the surface would be a good idea. In other countries with real masonry walls, you can of course get away with a lot more, because instead of 1/2" cement, you have 4-12" of cement to absorb it all, but even that's sometimes not enough and mold and concrete degradation happens there. So thinking of plasters, I kind of wonder if with tadelakt and similar waterproof plasters in showers, if possibly some/all of the mold issues and general problems could be averted if they were applied on top of something like Redgard or Aquadefense, as their couple millimeter layers could dry out quick, and no water would get soaked into the cement boards or drywall (which would never work at all without waterproofer as the paper of drywall itself is the main mold food...) and sit around. I already have tile bought for my own bathroom project, so only the dry areas of my bathroom are getting plastered, so I'm not gonna gamble with trying a polished plaster shower right now, but I kinda feel like a liquid waterproofer on cement board would give it a decent fighting chance.
Good evening guys, I personally, from using many different shower finishes over the last 30 years, prefer tile, not the inexpensive stuff but quality. I have had the plastic sheets in my lower shower for about 10 years, it's still going strong although I have to change the caulking at this point. I have many pails of Stuco-Flex at my home as of now and feel no product that is waterproof is as good, it's an Elastomeric topcoat that contains a pure acrylic polymer, mildew resistant and flexible, but still won't use it in my shower, anyhow, FYI, under any cement board, one should use a peal and stick thick membrane as even the thickest or tarp grad plastic sheathing will rot in just a year or so best wishes to all no matter what you choose. I bought a house and there was black mold in the bathroom on the drywall. I tore everything down to the studs, put in a new bathtub and toilet (sink is still coming). I put cement board on all the studs (now drywall that can get moldy again!) I wanted to make a totally airtitght, watertight bathroom that cannot get mold damage. (I lived in Asia for 10 years. In Japan and Korea, bathrooms have ceramic tile on the floor, all walls and sometime the ceiling. Wash everything down with bleach and hot water and you have a sterile bathroom - far superior to what is common in the west). However, tiling looks a lot easier on youtube that in real life. I put up some tiles but I am just not satisfied with my work. I want to take them all off and put this veneer plaster on the cement board. My question is, is it totally impervious to water, humidity or water damage? If I put cement board on the floor, can I use this veneer on the floor (to make an easy to clean floor)? Also, "veneer plaster" sounds like a generic term. Walk into Home Depot where the immigrants work and ask for any specific product and they almost always stare at you like you have three heads. (They have no clue what you are talking about.) Could you recomment a name brand? Thanks so much! You're a life saver! This looks much easier than tiling!! :)
HowdyTrevor, I too believe ta proper tiling system to be the best there is for keeping mold, and it's invisible toxins at bay. The foundation of any bathroom should have a proper waterproof barrier laid down no matter what substrate a person desires, even more, important and less understood is a superior exhaust system or mold will happen no matter how watertight a room is. I have been dealing with this issue for the last 4 years too, my walls are watertight, but I can't seem to find the proper exhaust system even though I hired this out to professionals, a bit frustrating. I built a large bounce back wall at one end of our sport court. I used hardipanel over OSB to make the surface hard to maximize bounce. My wife uses it for tennis and my sons for lacrosse. Could I put a layer of plaster over the hardipanel to make it even harder? Would it stand up to the elements and punishment from the lacrosse balls impacting? The ball speed is up to 100 mph. Thx!

Greg you mentioned that with taping mud you will be back 2 or 3 times well you are right if you regular joint compound but I have used 5 mint mud and no crack when I am floating out humps if I got a bigger area to work with I use 20 . Love youre work brother u are one the best tradesman I know .

I've used 5 minute mud quite a few times it definitely takes two guys, one to mix and to more importantly run the bucket to me as daylight's burning and one of theos 5 minute just got used up for delivery, so 4 minutes to apply, you must be fast and have coordination, I love this feeling of having to rush sometimes, anyway.

Another awesome demonstration...I avoid sanding as well and could never understand those guys who create massive dust storms while finishing drywall...I like to use a semi-smooth finish that only needs a quick trowel knock down of any crazy high spots then prime and paint...

In England here I would killed the suction with pva glue then used gypsum bonding (2 hour set) to fill out the low areas then used gypsum based multi finishing plaster.

Kirk, I have an exterior area on my house that is soon to be a corner screened in porch. I have taken the brick off and have just the sheathing at this time. I'll be firing out the walls some and then covering with Hardie board. (I know you can stucco over brick but I've gone this route to allow changing windows, adding electrical and most important add dimensionality via recesses etc.) Through many views of your videos I stumbled on this video and have decided that this finish is what I want on the two walls I'm redoing. Though they are exterior they are under roof and behind screens so I do not expect direct contact with rain etc. Humidity will be a factor so I wonder if the Diamond brand veneer is appropriate? If not is there another product that is as easy to use as this appears to be?

2 sides to wonderboard..the other side is for plastering there are little holes all in it for the mud to grab, they gave you the smooth side meant to glue onto..

Thanks for all the informative videos. My home flooded this spring and I am now working to replace the bottom 16 inches of walls. Built in 1958 it has plaster over a type of blue board that came in 16 inch wide boards. I'm having trouble finding materials. I have drywall made for plastering, and Structo-lite but no place that I can find the Diamond veneer - what other brands do I look for? So far my plan is the Quikrete adhesive, structo-lite plaster (and tape) to coat out to close to the right thickness, then a veneer to finish. (and then texture to match all the different textures they did along with smooth) Any words of wisdom are welcome. Thanks! You-all are amazing.

What product would you recommend for plastering wonder board in the shower ?
The frame is quite uneven so after the wonder board has been installed with shims ,the wall is still a bit wavy
So we need to know what kind of products to use to flatten the walls and to make sure that the tile won't fall off

Question - I'm hanging cement board all over my bathroom instead of using sheetrock because I live in south Louisiana and everything molds. I was hoping to do cement board + red gard + bonding agent + veneer. Is that practical? Do I need a base coat?I've seen other videos where you just skimcoated stucco and want to clarify.

I drill a small hole, and insert a finishing nail for small projects, find a stud & use a screw into that for larger, heavier loads. Also use lead anchors. I really enjoy seeing how a true professional does this sort of thing.

Howdy Semid, just keep troweling and continue to use water this will happen naturally, if you don't use the water the finish coat will just burn and blister with possible spider checking plus no water when intentionally over troweling can loosens the finish coat often from the base coat.

Hello Kirk, thanks for the good channel, your tips have helped me out when I plastered our entire master bedroom. I am now onto another project and would appreciate your input. I am putting in a woodstove heat shield. The shield needs to have a 1" air gap behind it for airflow overtook of the drywall, and a 3" air gap top and bottom. Originally we were going to do slate tile, but the tile company didn't want to tile the cement board to the base for the shield as it is free floating. Is there a veneer plaster or a product you would recommend that would be non combustible ? We were going to try and make the sheet of cement board replicate a large piece slate. Mortar was recommended to us with the use of various colourants, but I am unsure if you can trowel mortar like you can plaster without the risk of cracking. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Kirk, my man! I’m in the process of doing exactly what you did in the video-plaster veneer over hardier board around a gas fireplace. Prior to start, I made a sample board. When I applied the diamond veneer finish over the imperial basecoat, it bubbles and cracked as it dried. Any suggestions on how to prevent this?

Howdy AJ, sure, next time wet the base coat, then this won't happen.
When you applied the top coat the base sucked out the water too fast, this happens to the best of us.

Nightmare when the walls that out, in England we’d typically use an undercoat plaster first such as bonding to get it as level as possible, then two coats of multi finish after to finish it up

Love your videos Kirk! We are plastering a gas interior fireplace that is covered in cement board. There is a beautiful limestone mantle that we just installed so will be plastering around that. Do I need to use a bonding agent on the cement board before the first coat?
I bought the Kemset ekoplast to use as the base coat and then will apply a plaster finish on top of that. Will that work well? I'm not in a such so dont mind waiting for the various coats to dry. What product would you recommend for a semi-rough skip trowel finish?
I got a bid and the guy said he would do the following: That is one coat of micro primer two coats of Matt venetian plaster marmorino/ compress/ wax. Is this better than the ekoplast base + top coat that I am planning?

Hi Kirk, thank you for the video...i would like to see what the raw ingredients are for this and how they are mixed? here in Aust often this stuff comes in premixed buckets,which costs an arm and a leg and doesnt go far.

Love your vids Kirk! I want to do something similar to this on a range hood above my electric stove. The range hood is plywood. Would I be able to tape the seams and plaster over that or do you recommend wonder board as a base?
Evening Breanne, you can but you would need to paper and wire the plywood then stucco.
Mesh is for sheetrock while stucco netting is for plastering.
If it were me I'd just buy a thin piece of marble or a different material that resists burning rather than go through all the work for stucco.

Hi Kirk. Don't know if you are still checking this video, but I had such a hard time getting the plaster onto hardieboard. The plaster dried as soon as I applied it making it difficult to work the plaster. I tried spraying it with water, but ended up with rather rough looking plaster, which is okay but not the look I was going for. My plaster looked about the consistency of what you are applying. Any ideas what could have been going on with the drying issue?
Good evening Cynthia, of course, I know what happened two things, your mix was setting too fast, and the second was the existing wall was too hot or dry, so it sucked the moister out of what you troweled on too fast.

The bonding agent Kirk applied also kills some of the suction. As far as veneer plaster setting too fast, don't over mix and use COLD water. The warmer the water, the faster the set. Also clean, clean, clean, equipment to avoid contamination.

Evening Nadia, cement plaster will adhere to cement board by suction as they are both cementitious, no need for a bonding agent. I'd recommend rapid set cement stucco, I prefer to use bonding agents as sometimes the cement boards can be dirty thus the stucco won't adhere well, if you do choose a bonding agent,
quikrete or Larson's are perfect.

Okay so I hope you can answer my question, we read all over the internet to see if we could use Hardi backer on all walls in our bathroom and they said yes, mainly because we wanted to tile the whole bathroom, but now we realized we fell short and our budget won’t cover all the tile in our bathroom(had an emergency surgery for father in law which took most of our savings)
My dilemma: we installed the Hardi backer with the square side out and not the smooth side out. We bought enough tiles for the shower/tub area only. But the rest of the bathroom now won’t be tiled. We spoke with someone to see what the price difference would be and the plaster would be about $2,000 less than if we chose to buy tile as we had originally planned. What brand would you recommend using over this? We want to texturize it after to maybe hide imperfections if there are any so it wouldn’t be a smooth finish after. We really don’t know what to do at this point. Please help! Thank you!
I noticed in a video that Kirk recommended "Structo-lite" brand because it handles moisture (bathroom) better than other plasters. It sets in about 3-5 hours.

A friend tried to help us by only texturizing over it to see if by chance that would work, and it totally didn’t work, which I expected. But my husband was hopeful. Do you know how “easy” it is to actually put the paste on the wall? I am looking to try and doing it myself because I have more patience. And I’m determined to make it look good. Lol

FYI, I don't wish to add to your miseries but the hardy board in a shower is okay as long as you have a peel and stick membrane under the board.

Kirk I'm a big fan but you can temper bucket mud and 90 minute mud and it will not crack. It will stay wet but won't crack.
Good Morning Frost dude, as a rule, I rarely drop much mud, when I do I usually leave it alone,
but also realize if you just dropped some mud and it's clean it can be used again.

What I mean to say is this. If you mix drywall mud with mixed up 90 minute mud and combine them together, they won't crack no matter how thick you make it.

Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. I realize you don't do taping muds. But it's still good info. I never use 20. It only makes sense if you temper mud that you use minimum of 45 minutes so you have some working time. 90 minutes is really like an hour. And 45 is like 20-25 minutes of working time. Also it makes the mud harder. But not as hard as a veneer plaster.

Hi, if you use plaster round a fire then it cracks. I'm a chimney specialist. Should use k-rend sheet mesh. Just like skrim tape but a meter wide in a 50m roll. Holds it better.

Excellent video as always! I work in scagliola, a plaster technique and I want to do it on a wall. Do you think cement board and plaster weld would be a good foundation? The plaster I use takes a long time to cure and required wet sanding to finish. It is a modified Hydrocal. thank you!!
Howdy and happy Easter Mellissa, if you use cement board as your substrate you don't need a bonding agent, however, the bonding agent will slow the set time of you plaster a lot longer as the bonding agent will kill the suction.
If you want your imitation Marble to set or dry faster don't apply the bonding agent as cement board is porous, which means it absorbs moister.
It will absorb the moister right out of that imitation Marble and will dry it much faster.

They are usually sold at plastering yards only.

Is easy sand considered a vaneer plaster? You know the 20 40 min mud sold at home Depot. It does say it has plaster d Paris and limestone on the bags.
Good evening knight rider, easy sand is gypsum unless they have changed the formula, and added limestone, this would transform gypsum into a veneer.

And I mean stucco or plaster over cement board. I've never seen anyone do it but it made sense to me.

Does the Structo-lite need to be scored for the veneer coat to bond to it? I’ve seen references to that in other places but looks like your basecoat layer was smooth. Thanks!
Evening Nate, no it does not need the horizontal scratch marks. Instead, the existing coat needs to be moist or wet to create the necessary suction/absorption to grasp the next coat.😉

Hi guys, thank you for all these videos. I am doing pretty much exactly the same thing as in this video. Hardiebacker cement board on fireplace below mantle and either regular drywall or blueboard (if I can even find it locally) above mantle. My plan is to plaster top (drywall) and bottom (cement board) using larsons plaster weld , then structolite then finish with either diamond finish or imperial finish (if I can find either finish locally). Does this seem like a good plan to you? Any suggestions/alternatives? Thank you for your time!

Hey Ryan, I’m planning to do this in the next week. Curious why you would do a combination of cement board and drywall vs just doing all cement board or all drywall?
@@jasonmorley2359 hey Jason, I had to use cement board on bottom to be non combustible. I could also use it above mantel but drywall is just easier to work with and both surfaces will be plastered over so you will never know the difference. And fyi I'm now going to use imperial veneer base coat followed by diamond veneer finish. No longer using structolite.

Howdy James dude, nail as far from the corners as possible, this is why I used roofing nails also as they are srronger,
besides no mater if the corners did blow out plaster covers all mistakes.

I'm using USG diamond venneer plaster at a peanut butter consistency over cement board. What can I do to prevent?
Howdy James, I suggest you finish your project and not worry about cracking as there are too many reasons to explain in this comment,
When done simply skim a bit of diamnod over any cracks.

I’m still unsure what the veneer plaster is in comparison to what we use in England. It looks completely different to multi finish which is what we skim coat with. Same with your base coat, looks nothing like our bonding or hardwall backing coat. The only thing it’s similar to is the carlite ultra finish which is Grey and really creamy to use for the top coat
Hello, my fellow plasterer in the UK; both multi-finish and this lime plaster are so similar that if someone mixed it for us, neither of us could tell what was spreading.
I this video, I used Structo-Lite 50 lb. Basecoat Plaster is mill-mixed perlite-aggregate gypsum plaster, with accelerators as I wanted my basecoat to set within minutes, not the three to five hours it usually takes.
Then when the basecoat was set, we applied or spread a finished coat of Diamond lime plaster.

Don't know if this was asked or mentioned in this or another video. The amazon link shows 13 different Kraft trowel sizes. Can you specify which size trowel is being used?
Good Morning Justin dude, there is a wide variety of trowels, I would suggest a 14X5 as it's a medium sized trowel,
Some beginners may use a 12X5, I find this small trowel does not hold enough mud and waists too much mud as it's not long enough,
then there are the folks like me who prefer 16 to 18-inch lengths as they hold a lot but are a bit tougher to control.

If the desired end result is an orange peel, could you apply the final coat wetter with a paint/nap roller?
Sure you can, as you know a roller with a nap of about an inch and a half creates a good orang peal finish.
Hi, Kirk. Thanks for your videos. I'm working on a fireplace just like this, but I can't find any stores that sell the durock recommended Diamond Basecoat and Imperial Finish coat. All I can find online is the Imperial Basecoat and Diamond Finish. Is it okay to swap out the Imperial/Diamond from what is recommended? (And I will buy my tools through your Amazon links as a thank you for your help!)

@@rickyzuela7569 Sure you can, but still need to waterproof the walls. This so-called shortcut is by far any shorter. Many have thought to also do this, it won’t work, sorry.🕵🏼♀️
@StuccoPlastering I'm a tile guy so I have experience with cement board, I already installed two layers of the black paper on the plywood wall now to hang cement board and stucco it... the c board should be like my scratch coat and brown coat in one correct?
@ Correctomundo, if possible stagger the boards use nails that are long enough so the at last 7/8 of the leg goes into the stud and lastly use a heavy duty fiber-glass mesh tape for your joints. FYI, there is no need to apply two coats either, one skim coat about a half inch is all that’s necessary. Cheers 😉

Is it possible to put cement boards on the walls and then to plaster them with Venetian Plaster?
Is this a good idea or something similar you did on this fireplace.

Greetings Music dude, it's possible but far from practical.
If it were me, I'd hang sheetrock instead, if you can't find the blue or purple board hang regular sheetrock.
The apply the bonding agent, "Plaster weld by Larson,s." now you're able to plaster them with any veneer finish.

I have a question that I hope you'll answer for me. I have so little money but I really need to replace my shower walls. I was thinking about using the same cement board you used in this video them applying a smooth cement to it then sealing it. Do you think that would work? I really can't afford to tile and don't want to use those ugly shower wall panels. What are your thoughts? I'd be grateful for your input. Awesome video by the way!
Howdy Bailey, sorry but stay away from all types plasters, in a shower.
this includes all Structo-lite and plaster of Paris, these are both gypsum based, and never used in a shower.
You can apply lime based plaster although I don't anymore, as even these lime plasters mold fast and must be sealed every 6 months, who has time for this nonsense,
either tile or attach the plastic shower sheets.
You will like me still have to re-caulk every few years but your walls won't mold within a few months like every plaster known to man.

Tiles are sort of the cheap part. You can get cheapo but "good enough" 12x12s from Lowes or HD for $.69 or so per square foot. I don't know the exact size, but let's say a 3x3 shower with 8 foot walls. 72 square feet, so right about $50 for tiles. Figure two $15 bags of thinset, one $15 bag of grout, one $15 thing of grout sealer, you're at $110 total for the tile material whereas most crappy plastic surrounds cost more. I know our garbage plastic tub surround we threw out was $100. The only difference with the plastic surrounds is you can mount them to normal drywall (you need a $15 tub of mastic and v notch trowel to mount it correctly, though) whereas tile needs the cement boards (which cost about double per square foot compared to drywall, but at least are easier to transport by car due to being 3x5...)
For mold and mildew and tiles, though, you ideally want a surface applied waterproofer like Aquadefense or Redgard, basically liquid rubber you brush onto the cement board and inbetween sealing all the seams and joints (with the joints thinsetted with mesh tape together.) It would add $50 but really guarantees the reliability of everything and not getting mold. You can as well use plastic sheeting behind the cement boards (cheaper) instead of this surface liquid, but the problem with that is it needs to be secure and watertight before putting cement boards up, and it's sorta impossible with screwholes/etc. The other problem is the shower walls dry out slower with plastic (or in the old days, tar paper) compared to liquid waterproofer. The cement boards are not waterproof, they simply don't disintegrate with water contact like drywall does. Water will still eventually permeate them, and go to your studs/etc. My first plaster tryout was on a scrap of Hardibacker, and a single Hardibacker sheet easily can absorb probably two quarts of water no problem, I had to spray over a quart to get Structolite to stick with no bonding agent. Think of showers now, and how much water would get absorbed in say, a house with kids, and quickly you could see why waterproofing the surface would be a good idea. In other countries with real masonry walls, you can of course get away with a lot more, because instead of 1/2" cement, you have 4-12" of cement to absorb it all, but even that's sometimes not enough and mold and concrete degradation happens there.
So thinking of plasters, I kind of wonder if with tadelakt and similar waterproof plasters in showers, if possibly some/all of the mold issues and general problems could be averted if they were applied on top of something like Redgard or Aquadefense, as their couple millimeter layers could dry out quick, and no water would get soaked into the cement boards or drywall (which would never work at all without waterproofer as the paper of drywall itself is the main mold food...) and sit around. I already have tile bought for my own bathroom project, so only the dry areas of my bathroom are getting plastered, so I'm not gonna gamble with trying a polished plaster shower right now, but I kinda feel like a liquid waterproofer on cement board would give it a decent fighting chance.
Good evening guys, I personally, from using many different shower finishes over the last 30 years, prefer tile, not the inexpensive stuff but quality.
I have had the plastic sheets in my lower shower for about 10 years, it's still going strong although I have to change the caulking at this point.
I have many pails of Stuco-Flex at my home as of now and feel no product that is waterproof is as good, it's an Elastomeric topcoat that contains a pure acrylic polymer, mildew resistant and flexible, but still won't use it in my shower, anyhow,
FYI, under any cement board, one should use a peal and stick thick membrane as even the thickest or tarp grad plastic sheathing will rot in just a year or so

Mastering Plastering for the beginner’s to the experts
I bought a house and there was black mold in the bathroom on the drywall. I tore everything down to the studs, put in a new bathtub and toilet (sink is still coming). I put cement board on all the studs (now drywall that can get moldy again!) I wanted to make a totally airtitght, watertight bathroom that cannot get mold damage. (I lived in Asia for 10 years. In Japan and Korea, bathrooms have ceramic tile on the floor, all walls and sometime the ceiling. Wash everything down with bleach and hot water and you have a sterile bathroom - far superior to what is common in the west). However, tiling looks a lot easier on youtube that in real life. I put up some tiles but I am just not satisfied with my work. I want to take them all off and put this veneer plaster on the cement board. My question is, is it totally impervious to water, humidity or water damage? If I put cement board on the floor, can I use this veneer on the floor (to make an easy to clean floor)? Also, "veneer plaster" sounds like a generic term. Walk into Home Depot where the immigrants work and ask for any specific product and they almost always stare at you like you have three heads. (They have no clue what you are talking about.) Could you recomment a name brand? Thanks so much! You're a life saver! This looks much easier than tiling!! :)
HowdyTrevor, I too believe ta proper tiling system to be the best there is for keeping mold, and it's invisible toxins at bay.
The foundation of any bathroom should have a proper waterproof barrier laid down no matter what substrate a person desires, even more, important and less understood is a superior exhaust system or mold will happen no matter how watertight a room is.
I have been dealing with this issue for the last 4 years too, my walls are watertight, but I can't seem to find the proper exhaust system even though I hired this out to professionals,
a bit frustrating.

Plastering and repair tips for your number one investment
I built a large bounce back wall at one end of our sport court. I used hardipanel over OSB to make the surface hard to maximize bounce. My wife uses it for tennis and my sons for lacrosse. Could I put a layer of plaster over the hardipanel to make it even harder? Would it stand up to the elements and punishment from the lacrosse balls impacting? The ball speed is up to 100 mph. Thx!

If they hit the wall as hard as I do when playing racquetball, the stucco or plaster will surlily crack.
