A little tip to home owners if you get a leak in a ceiling as soon as you notice put a whole in it so it doesn’t spread across the whole board it can prevent the sheet from bowing and falling the water spreads and starts soaking the drywall causing it to turn soft and the screws pull loose
@@JoeKing67. of course the leak has to be fixed I just stated that if you come across a leak in your ceiling just put a hole in the drywall if not the water spreads across the whole board and causes the paper backing to start letting water into the gypsum and it turns back into mud and the whole board will sag and finally collapse if you put a whole in it and let it drip into a pal then all you have to fix is the hole that you put into it not the whole ceiling. In some cases you will have to take the board down to fix the problem

Hey, good video. I'm a DIY with very little knowledge of home repairs. Great work Paul! It's good to see work being done in a home that's occupied and furnished. So many videos are done in a new or renovated space and its hard to truly gauge some of the obstacles you have to prepare for when the space is being utilized. I'm a DIY'er, and appreciate you sharing your skills. Def learned some new tricks and techniques that I had not seen or been taught. Thanks.
I’m a painter 40years and I got a lot of tips from your videos especially tracing the new pice and marking the spot where it was a real game changer for me and I always give you credit for the trick
This has definitely been an informative video. I have a hole in the ceiling in my garage that's been there since 2018. I have tried to tackle it and now i know i've been concentrating on the wrong thing. Me being a novice in this area thought I had to scrape away the texture around the hole on the existing sheetrock to ensure proper blending. I have racked my brain trying to figure out how to scrap off the old texture. When I tackle this again I plan to get it finished and in the past.
Great video Paul. I do ceiling repairs in condominium buildings. Most leaks are caused by a leaking bathtub drain or toilet wax ring leaks. I use a oscillating multitool to cut the plaster coated stucco ceiling. Then I use the wood and cut it 4 inches longer on each side of the repair . I also use a thin drill bit to make pilot holes to screw the wood to the ceiling so the plaster won’t crack. Then I screw the new drywall using shims to level the repair and make it flush with the rest of the ceiling. Afterwards I bed the mash tape with 20 minute mud. After the mud sets up I give it a second coat of 20 minute mud through the rest of the repair extending the mud 12 inches from the repair. The third and fourth coats I use 90 minute mud very thinned out so I can skim coat the rest of the repair. I let it dry well between each coat. On the third day I sanded prime it and paint it. Thank you for sharing your techniques specially the skip trowel finish.
Paul u do great work! I live in an older home I have plaster. walls my one wall keeps getting blisters and I have to pill the wall and fix it do u think moisture is coming in the wall. What should I do to fix it?(material) thanks paul

Great tutorial. I’m a 67 yr old Jane of all trades. This was the perfect video for my present situation. My toilet leaked down on my laundry wall ceiling. I always hate doing drywall, because I’m not great at it. I think I can get better watching your videos. You explain things really well.
I'm doing some drywall repairs under one of my windows and this is just what I needed to finish the job, with some practice I think I cand do the skim coat and nock down as close as possible as what you did, I've done lots of drywall repairs around my house but never been satisfied with the results. Wish me luck this time, thank you Sir for sharing your talents, I appreciate it very much.
this guy knows what he’s doing. good work! Quick tip: don’t be afraid to open up your patches with more mud too the sides, most of the times there will be a border and to erase that border so it can look flat and smooth as possible I recommend opening it wider.
Hi! I'm a painter but end up doing a lot of drywall. I've learned everything I know(which honestly isn't much) by watching videos from people like you . So thanks. Evidently my work is pretty good because I have been very busy lately, and it is flood season where I am. So again thank you for all the great info and product info!
I am a 68-year-old DIY and next week I have to do the exact same repair in my daughters' condo garage as her A/C condensate was not draining and when I had cleared the clog, the water overflowed the T junction and got the ceiling soaked. So I had to take out the section of drywall that was soaked along with the insulation and install a longer verticle drain pipe to prevent the rush of water from the A/C condensate bin from overflowing. That repair went extremely well, but now I need to replace the section of drywall that I took out and replace it with a new section, just like you just did! I have always been able to cover screw heads with mud but when it comes to filling in gaps, I haven't been that successful! I will try to track down the same tape that you used in the video and give it a try...again! Sometimes this old dog just is past any new training!
I'm a DIYer working on ceiling repair from Hurricane Ian which just passed last night. Things are not as bad as they could be, so I'm thankful. I appreciate this video to give me some tips for repairing the damage to my ceilings. Thank you!!

Nice video. I recently bought a house and have lived in it for about 2 years now. recent storms caused my ceiling to leak. I called a contractor out and since its a extension and I was unsure about permit history he told me insurance would not cover and that to fix roof section and inside of the room would cost me $12k. I said good bye. And thats what lead me here. I am hoping to be able to do most work on my own and this video has given me some confidence. I am a Master Auto Technician and I feel as if I could do home repair if I just learned a little bit
Hey Paul, I'm a homeowner who does most of my own repairs. Had a washing machine drain clog and need to repair the drywall still. Thanks to your videos I feel rather confident I can do this. God bless you, your family and friends.
I’m an HVAC contractor and general DIY type but I’ve never been good at drywall. In fact, next to plumbing, I generally hate to mess with it. This video helps a great deal. I’ve got an old house that is a fixer upper and I’ll have to tackle all of the rock repairs with various textures. I’ll make certain to check out your other videos. Thanks!
I’m a DIYer. 51 years old and trying to fix up my house without spending a fortune. I’m not a rich person, so this is how I have to do it! Thanks so much for your help!
Thanks Paul! This is exactly what I needed. My roof leaked and caused a hole in the ceiling almost exactly like the one in the video. I got a new roof and needed to repair the hole. You made it easy for me. Awesome video!

I’m going to fix it for them because we use most our money on repairing their roof! Thank you for this video! People like us really need it! Highly appreciate it
Cultural differences maybe that we like the soft look of textured ceilings and walls in the USA. I've never understood the appeal of wallpaper, which is ubiquitous in the UK.
Thank you Marshall. 👍🏻 I Like texture and smooth. Just depends on the space. But, I will say I’ve seen some ugly texture and some hideous not so smooth.
@@susanholl5994 Yes. Horses for courses/live and let live and all that. It has been very widely used in the UK (and very badly - seen some shocking, headache inducing, examples of combed artex on ceilings and walls) especially in old houses, often in an attempt to mask awful plasterwork.
@@susanholl5994 we use ceiling textures to hide framing imperfections. Trusses will wander, stand up walls at the joints wander. Texture helps hide that. Anytime we texture anything, we are hiding something.
DIY'er here! Thanks my brother for the detailed instructions on knocking out a sheetrock repair from start to finish. I have a lil side gig doing this exact job.
I’m a diy’er and I’d love to have someone remove all my popcorn ceilings but it’ll have to be me because everyone around here wants 40 bucks plus an hour to do anything like this and they like to stand around taking their time or playing on their phones. I appreciate the videos as an educational thing. Not a fan of mud and even less of the sanding! Lol.
I can do just about anything in renovations, but mudding drywall! I need a lot more practice, I blame my parents for not letting me play with mud when I was a kid.
I'm a DIY since I was 18. Now I'm renovating my 3 story home myself. I thank you for instructing each step and explaining why you are doing the steps. Appreciate It!
I do drywall work professionally. I repair water damaged drywall all day at my full time job for a large condo complex and a handy ma'am on the side. I do my repairs essentially the same way. I prefer 5 min mud for the first couple coats
Your jobs must be half ass Knockdown should have been scraped so the board sits flush After the 3 coats you can still see the repair. 37 years as a plasterer this is a quick fix for a quick profit!!!
@@MrTicker69 I certainly didn't want to write a step by step book in a RUclips comment about how I do them. I usually do about 5 coats total with knock downs in between. My repairs are invisible at the end 😉
Hi Melanie, I applaud you on your endeavor. I’m at a learning curve because I would like to become more versatile in my business as a handyman. What can you suggest to become better at drywall repair? I would like to leave an invisible finish!
Giving the manufacturers recommendation is a plus for the video quality. I have a wall where the drywall is away from the wall. The next thing is, I can push my index finger thru sections of it. I would expect to see that issue on ceiling, but this is a wall. I did no see any leaks or signs of moisture. The dry wall is very dry.
In my younger days I was a DIY guy. Something needed fixing in my house, I did it. Unfortunately age and physical barriers caught up with me and about all I can do now is change light bulbs. I love watching your type of video though.
I came across your video after waking up to a flooded bathroom on my second floor which damaged the first floor ceiling. About 3 feet of the ceiling cracked in a straight line.. I also have some water marks and a few big bubbles. I plan to wait until the area is dried before starting the repairs etc. Your video is on track and it is very helpful to me. This is also my first time so I will be watching your video a few times over and over. Thanks again for your very detailed instructions. PS. I just replaced the water supply valve and the floatation device in the toilet tank - these two culprits are responsible for the damage, smile.

DIY who needs to repair my water damaged ceiling. Just what I needed to know. Thanks for sharing
Thanks.
Female DIYer. Had a roof leak after a bad storm a couple weeks ago. Thanks so much for this video. We plan to attempt our repair soon.
I’m a DIYer and had to fix one of my tenants ceiling from water damage from the tenant’s above kitchen sink. I saved a lot of money by watching your video. Thank you!
This is our same dilemma! Our kitchen sink leaked into the basement and now its ruined! Im worried about mold 😢
My 82 year old Grandmas celing! Thankyou so very much
Thank you!!
As the owner of 1940's row home where something is always either leaking, cracking, or creaking this demystifies the exact repair I have coming up. I'm not doing this myself, but at least I better understand what questions to ask before I choose my pro. Thank you so much!!
I'm a drywall company we do a lot Duplexes condos apartment buildings But I have 2 drywall crews of 3 to 4 man teams. And I have 2. To 3 man Tapers and We do houses New construction houses output all the crew If you know we put all the cruise in 1 house just to knock it out And get out of there Whatever really like your video I just came on my know that they're 3 years old You do a good work You're a real good teacher for somebody that wants to try do jobs for themselves
I'm a homeowner with a damaged ceiling from a roof leak. After this video, I think I can fix it myself. Excellent instruction and clarity!
Very nice job. I am a contractor that does quite a bit of sheetrock / taping and mudding /repair.
It's nice to see your quality work. It's even nicer not being the one doing it for once! Great work Paul. I'd hire you in a second on my crew.
Nothing makes my day more frustrating than having to doing dry wall all day
I’m a DIY-er thank you for talking me through this process so throughly.
Yeah, I’m a Handyman and I do drywall just the way you do great tips in the video
I am a homeowner. I would definitely let you work on my house You are thorough and clean and know your trade.
Hey Paul, I'm a homeowner who does most of my own repairs. Had a washing machine drain clog and need to repair the drywall still. Thanks to your videos I feel rather confident I can do this. God bless you, your family and friends.
How'd it go?
@@onblastcortez1179 finished quickly and looked pretty good when it was all done.
@@XykOtyK glad to hear that!
Single 54 year old gal who has never done this before. I was able to fix the hole in my ceiling because of you! Thank you!
This was an exceptional video. Learned a few things I didn't know. Thank you for posting this. You just saved me alot of money. Subscribing.
Amazing video. I’m a diyer. I own my own home so videos like this are a HUGE help. I currently have a whole in my kitchen ceiling that needs to be taped and floated. Now that I’ve watched this I’m much more confident that I’ll be able to do it. Thanks for the video.
I’m watching because most recently with the passed storm here in California. My grandparents house roof didn’t hold up. We are getting their roof fix but their ceiling drywall needs repair. I’m going to fix it for them because we use most our money on repairing their roof! Thank you for this video! People like us really need it! Highly appreciate it
Great job. Although never understood the appeal of textured ceilings. Best wishes from the UK.
Couldn’t agree more Susan!🙌🏼😎 Thanks for watching and commenting! -Paul
I need to do the exact same ceiling repair. You make it look deceptively easy. Do I dare try to do this myself? I'm tempted....🤔
I am faced with the same dilemma.
Ikr...🤔
So did you do it yourself?
This is one of the best ceiling repair videos I've seen. I feel confident in repairing my ceiling now. Of course, I have to get the roof fixed first 😉
Awesome!👏🏻 I really appreciate your feedback. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!😎 -Paul
30 y/o electrician and DIYer. Doing some drywall side work for a friend. Thanks for the awesome video!
Lol.
Im a wanna be diyer. Wish I would’ve found your videos before I started. Haha. You make it look so easy. Thank you for sharing!
I am a DIY person. We removed a wood stove and the ceiling needed repair. You helped. Thank you
Lol! That cat was saying... "Thanks Paul for making my house look purrrrfect again!....you the man!"
yes you are the man Paul!
I do drywall work professionally. I repair water damaged drywall all day at my full time job for a large condo complex and a handy ma'am on the side. I do my repairs essentially the same way. I prefer 5 min mud for the first couple coats
Your jobs must be half ass
Knockdown should have been scraped so the board sits flush
After the 3 coats you can still see the repair.
37 years as a plasterer this is a quick fix for a quick profit!!!
@@MrTicker69 I certainly didn't want to write a step by step book in a RUclips comment about how I do them. I usually do about 5 coats total with knock downs in between. My repairs are invisible at the end 😉
@@Constructachick school these punks!
Hi Melanie, I applaud you on your endeavor. I’m at a learning curve because I would like to become more versatile in my business as a handyman. What can you suggest to become better at drywall repair? I would like to leave an invisible finish!
👍 nice, Alway use 5 min, rookies use box mud
DIY...and you’ve saved me thousands teaching us how to do things the right way. Thanks Paul!
👌
After doing exploration looking for an upstairs leak, this makes me feel so much better about the repairs. Thanks for posting..
Wow, thanks so much! I’m a DIY’er and first time home buyer who will need these skills for my wife and I to get a home.
Great video and explanation. I knew the basics on drywall repair but your videos definitely taught me a lot more. 🙏 thanks
I love watching your type of video though.
we're all sure you still got it old dude! you still tough and cool brother!
I'm in the same boat Jim. I keep plugging through the pain.
@@blackfender100 I figure that's me too but now I'm better informed on what I can't manage anymore.. :) Thanks Jim
I'm a DIY'er never done drywall. Your video is excellent and I was able to fix the drywall in my ceiling after a leak from the pipes above.
If you're a beginner? Always let the mud dry before putting on another coat
Amazing damaged drywall ceiling repair! You're very talented as well as artistic!
I really appreciate the kind words TA G!🙏 Thank you so much for watching and commenting my friend!😎 -Paul
Female diyer for my home repair remedies. Thank you Paul.
Doing the exact same thing right now. Ice dam caused the ceiling to leak, so I'm saving about a grand doing it myself
That’s awesome Matt!👏🏻 Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend!😎 -Paul
DIY person here. Had a similar situation in my closet. Will be watching this several times while I do my patch job. Thanks so much.
That is some great craftsmanship right there!!!!
Hey man, thanks for all the know-how you are sharing. I'm a painter by trade, and it's nice to be able to start incorporating some drywall repairs into my work with confidence
What’s the final coat made up of, you mentioned something about sand?
This is a great video that really covers this task thoroughly. I'm a DIY'er who initially found this daunting but learned with patience, and a little trial and error that I could do this myself.
That’s great! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!💥👍🏻😎
You are awesome!! I’m a first time property investor. I purchased a duplex. It’s been super fun trying to find great contractors that I ended up having to do a lot of the projects myself! I wish I would have seen this prior, I patched a leak in my ceiling and totally botched it, lol yikes… now I know the correct way to have this done in the future! You rock sir! Thank you 😊
DIY'er when I have to. You make it look easy.
Love your video, I own rentals. There’s always a seam crack, something that needs repaired before painting. I’m still trying to master texture.
I really appreciate that Muskogee!🙏 Texturing takes some practice but you’ll get it! Thanks for watching and commenting my friend!😎 -Paul
Good class thank you how much something like that repairs cost to get it done thank you

Excellent choice to cover the working area with plastic., The owners really appreciate you taking the time to do it.
i love the wet rag trick for blending thats such a clever idea , your the drywall master my friend , great job and so many can learn from this , but I didn't know latex came in flavors lol
Hey there Neil!💥👊🏻 Yeah man the rag does the trick for sure! I really appreciate that man! Haha... Definitely different flavors of paint!!!😆 -Paul
I'm a DIYer. I am cursed with the demon that tells you "Pssssst, hey, you could do that yourself you know....."
Never thought I could use a heat gun on drywall, thanks for making me more dangerous✌
Your video was the first to pop up when inquiring about ceiling water damage. The roof by the chimney was leaking, it's fixed, and I have to repair the water damaged ceiling. Thank you for your informative video. With your help I believe I can do it myself. Cheers!
