      Great job..i did some of the same work as you did here…In Albany , NY is where is fixed about 10 spots the size of your spot in this video and i had fun doing it…you know what i did too? i went and bought the same trowel you have here..i think you had mentioned it's a POOL trowel…telling ya what Kirk..what a huge difference with the rounded ends..there are less exccess mud streaks..i used a squirt bottle and sprayed the keys first prior to application of the 20 minute mud..i did not score the plaster first though..you're right, it's the worst damn aspect of plastering!!! i had a guy next to me with a vacuum sucking all the crap in the VAC..but needless to say it came out good..i can't stress enough how guys like you have the utmost respect from me…HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY KIRK AND FAMILY FROM THE CARDAMONE FAMILY IN NY !!

      Evening Tommy Brando, thank you, You noticed this trade is only easy and fun after at least 10 to 15 years in at 8 hours a day and fully paying attention.
      The materials and techniques become so much easier and therefor fun.
      I've met many guys over the years who claim to have 10 or even 20 years in the our trade but after viewing them for an hour I would ask in a nice way how much time do you really have in of actually working days?
      Not just being a plasterer and sitting home watching cartoons, these day should not be added into the time in as theres no learning or practice accumulated.
      Best wishes,
      kirk and family

      Yes Sir..i'm a painter by trade and have been in business for about 10 years..along the way i got into remodeling large and small jobs..i've never not been paid from a job and i'm very picky on who i hire…i've kicked off many dudes from the job site…i've learned a lot from watching the old schoolers like yourself, and picked up some tips over the years..owning 3 houses pre- 1880 helps a lot, too when encountering odd and weird problems like electrical and plumbing..prior to me going into business i worked union and non union jobs after college..i never claim to be the expert bc a man can only get better over time..

    You are just so amazing. I just love watching you work and listening to your patter. I'm restoring a 1911 Craftsman where I had to remove a few bays for plumbing and wiring. So now I'm almost finished with restoring the plaster. I've watched a lot of your stucco and plaster to learn. Watching this one, it's funny how I can almost "feel" how you pull the mud up off your hawk. I use structolite, and lime coat mostly. For my ceilings, though, I got knocked down a peg... I don't think I kept it wet enough, or wetted the gypsum, nor troweled it enough. As it dried, it popped off. So I knocked it off, primed the gypsum, and used Hamilton Topping green dot. Some is smooth, some is splattered, and some is skip. I've learned a TON from you!

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  10 лет назад

      Morning Black Swan, thank you,
      Your plaster may have popped off as the area was dusty, nothing sticks to dust.
      I use a bonding agent to make certain the plaster stays stuck but also to clean the dust off the surface.
      I also use structo-lit for bigger jobs as it lightweight and spreads well.
      Thanks for sharing.

    Kirk, I own a Fein Multi tool with a Fein 9-11-55 vacuum with attachments for the multi master and it works great, I use it on old school mud tile jobs that I demo. (and yes when the customer wants it I still do the old school mud beds for tile) I always use cement type products for all installations I do. Now the Fein system is not perfect but it has cut my dust issues 90+ %, it also can be equipped with a HEPA filter. How do you know what a Pot leaf looks like? LOL.That's right I said it LOL..... When you speak of 15/45/90 min mud are you referring to products like Dura bond 15/30/45/90 etc? I always wondered how they got some of the particular finishes in houses in the 30s & 40s especially on ceiling, was it mostly done with a roller type procedure? Brother I am so jacked when I see you post another video. Always brings me back to my Uncle Burt and Grampa Rass. When I spoke of my Grandfathers F-100 Pick Up last week it was a 1960 in that ford dark blue back in the day! Three on the tree. He taught me how to drive it when I was about 11 or 12 on job sites and when we would go to lumber yards and suppliers that had big lots he would let me be the pilot. Great times!!!!! Keep the vids coming!!! love them. My best to you and your family!!! Jimmy "RASS"

      Evening Randy, I'm using a simple sheetrock compound that sets fast like plaster of paris,
      Cal coat is a veneer plasters, which means they have limestone for strength and the all important gypsum to set it fast, which when combined are much stronger than what I am using in this video.
      Schools and hospitals require veneers, my newest video that was uploaded about 1 hour ago shows this veneer plaster finish system with a bit of inside information.

      @StuccoPlastering  9 лет назад

      Morning Allan Vidaurre, hey dude, as a rule I clean them throughout the day with my trowel or a margin trowel I sometimes keep in my bucket or my back pocket.
      I first scrape clean the hard mud from my hawk with either the trowel or margin trowel then fish cleaning with my handy dandy green float that I keep in my water bucket.
      Nothing worse than having buildup of gypsum or portland cement plaster harden on the bottom of your trowel as buildup prevents the trowel from flexing which matters when you are applying any gypsum, portland, acrylic,or lime based finish.
      Most guys don't understanding a trowel being is able to flex, but that's another story.

    How do you know if a crack in a plaster ceiling can be repaired or if the ceiling needs to be replaced? I am being told that the ceiling in my small bedroom needs to be replaced instead of patched, but I’m not sure if that’s really accurate. What’s your advice?

      Howdy Jack dude, you can learn for free here, one man's junk is another man's treasure.
      One of the strangest things here in the U.S. is most folks value that only in which they pay for, but the things they get for free can never be replaced.

    Hey Kirk - Thanks so much for your videos - they have really set me straight for the ongoing repairs on my old home. My question is what is the specific name of the 20 minute mud you use ?- I live in the north east and really only have big box stores available. I have both wall and ceiling repairs to do filling large cracks and holes. Do I need different weight mud or will one do? Again, thanks so much for your time.

    Thanks for these vids Kirk. If I didn't live in Maryland I would really enjoy apprenticing with you or even getting the chance to just shadow for a weeks worth of plaster work. I'm 42 and looking for a new career, I like old things/houses and it depresses me to see all this drywall being used. Anything cheap is the rule I guess. One other note, do you promote the use of using screw washer caulk method when having to restore and even out a t least a 12X12 ceiling? Don't wish to be a pain but do you answer personal messages, I have a couple questions on tools/method before I start laying out the cash....wouldn't be anything to involved just wishing for some direction and finding books on the topic seems a harder task than I'd thought it would be. Thanks again for the free knowledge, sincerely Mark.

    • @StuccoPlastering

      Good Evening Mars, I would recommend if you're short on cash and or experience to install sheetrock and finish with either taping mud or veneer plaster base coat with finish coat.
      as far as the bonding agent I prefer plaster weld, I don't have any knowledge with liquid PV's, thus can't advise on this substitute.

    Hi Kirk, My ceiling has water damage similar to the one shown in your video. I removed the bad spots so that the laths are exposed. What kind of mud are you using to make the repair. In your video you mention 20 minute mud.. Is it plaster of Drywall Joint compound? Can I substitute one for the other. I am not having any success finding plaster mix to do a large area at my local Home Depot store. Please advise.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  9 лет назад

      Howdy bones dude, I was using joint compounds by westpac that are sold at Home Depot, Lowes and most small hardware stores.
      20 minutes means from a mix if mixed properly you have 20 minutes to apply it befor it gets hard.
      If you contaminate the mix with dirty buckets drill paddles this will accelerate the set time to sometime hard in the bucket before you get to the place where you need it.
      Best wishes,

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  8 лет назад

      Howdy Spencer, either way will work the important thing is to have the cedar wood lath as clean as possible or the plaster won't adhere as nothing sticks to dust.
      I us a bonding agent as if I have to take the time out to wet tin order to get any excess dust off, i might as well use a bonding agent it's the same amount of time just add in the cost of the bonding agent, with my company I can't afford to skimp on costs.

      Good afternoon Jose dude,The mud I'm using in this video is a Gypsum Joint Compound. So yes it can be sanded if your not an expert, personally I have never had to sand either product, but I have lots of time in and loves this craft.
      the choice of USG Easy Sand & Westpac joint compound are very similar in nature or manufacturing so close in fact I can't tell the difference as I'm an applicator, not an engineer.
      Home Depot or Lowes or any of your nearby hardware stores will have either Westpac's Fast Set or USG's, Easy Sand Joint Compound.
      You buy the bags depending on your skill level.
      From, 20-minute compounds, means when mixed, you have 20 minutes to apply before it sets.
      The 40-minute compound, 40 minutes to apply, and so on, from 5-minutes to 20, 40, 60, 90, to an hour and a half.
      All you do is add water.
      FYI, if your buckets and drill paddles are dirty or full of residues due to not cleaning well last time you used them, this will set the mud much faster, always wash your tools.
      Click on this video and skip forward to 3 minutes for pictures and details. ruclips.net/video/k7tE652qOH8/видео.html
      USG's, Easy Sand Joint Compound Or Westpac’s Fast Set Joint Compound, they are both o.k. to use in fact I can't tell the difference.
      Undoubtedly one is sold at your neighborhood hardware store.

    So I have a bathroom above my kitchen and there is a crack in the kitchen ceiling. Sometimes the bathtub/shower leaks down and it drips out of the crack. Also, there are just a lot of cracks in the ceilings all around my house! Maybe because we have a close to 200 year old house. But still, it is very eyesore. Does the oscillating blade reduce the dust production versus a circular rotating blade? I would think it would. In addition, I've seen workers tape the end of a shop-vac hose to the tool to suck up the dust. Not sure how cumbersome that would be.

      No problems with weed, not legal everywhere yet. There are alot of positive and negative myths about weed. Driving on any substance that may or maynot effect your hand eye coordination and attention span, may not be a good choice. Weed effects everyone different.

      Howdy Max Kinge, I know there is a plant called a poinsettia, as I've bought a few during christmas days, but are we referring to a plaster method called this?
      Either way old Kirk is far form the world most knowledgeable guy,
      i'm just an expert of stucco and plastering methods and applications.
      Cheers,

      +Kirk & Jason Giordano's plastering & stucco tips -- Then you know what a poinsettia is. I think the plastering technique called pointsettia comes from the Italians. It's when you point while sitting and say, "Heya, you. Plaster datta hole"!
