holy crap! that was my first concert in Germany..... metallica opening for twisted sister..... I've never heard anyone talk about that tour. very cool..thanks!
Young people into Metallica now don't realize how underground and heavy Metallica were in the 80s,never heard them on the radio back then,me and my best friend in a small Texas town in high school were the only people who knew who they were, man did they go downhill after the 80s.
I thought they were going to go nowhere because all the songs on "Kill 'Em All" were too fast. They slowed things down a bit with "Ride The Lightning" " but the album still wasn't commercially viable. Back in 1988 a friend of mine in college saw them and didn't like them because he thought they were too fast. He was into the Hair bands and I was into Thrash and loved them since 1983 when I first bought "Kill 'Em All". I was also lucky enough to see them with the late Cliff Burton when they opened for Ozzy Osbourne in 1986.
They wouldn't play them on the radio then, but they will now. I drove a cab for 6 yrs, so I was always listening to KSHE 95 I'm sure you might've heard of them. But I'd be cruising & hear the bell on the radio & turn that shit MAX!!! For whom the bell tolls, lights me up even though it's a slower song. That bell is legend, hell they call the song a Metallica classic.
Metallica pretty much made it big from positive word of mouth and consistency, since there wasn't much mainstream promotion till And Justice For All. Not a lot of bands have done that in recent memory.
Absolutely correct. I often site this when people wonder about the Napster drawback, Metallica's career was made by kids sharing taped cassettes with one another then buying their official albums later when they could afford them, they should had been the LAST BAND bitching about file sharing.
Actually they didn´t have mainstream aproval by radios and tv till Justice came out, but the people kicked the radio´s ass to play Lightning and Master songs, so they did had radio promotion, the radio dindn´t wanted it, but fans make them
There wasnt any big promotion before black album. I remember very good the 80s. Moving to another city. Being the only kid in school wearing a Metallica shirt in 87 at a high class poser surfer youth dementia. It was rough. Then 3 years went by. Nirvana, and black album. Everyone i hated on that school was wearing Pearl jam shirt. I was. U know. Just fuck off guys. U still dont know bad brains and mdc. Cro mags. Pyssyshitters
Ive heard Metallica from older skaters./thrashers in 87. I was 12 then. I had to steal 10 dollars from my grand father to buy master. Still ashame of lol. But you didnt have any money when u was 12 in 87. Probably today a12 old year get 20 dollar if hes waking up going to school. lol. Another lifetime. There were other rules. But nobody played it. I heard Twisted Sister all day on the radio. There was no metallica
@@ScreaminMime They made and gave those tapes which would be copied and sent over and over. They hadn't released "I Disappear" when it was all over Napster, that's one of the two main points - they want to have a control over what and how their material would be presented (and there were 0 labels doing anything digital at the time); the other is that artists and the fans should figure out how to live with that because it was obvious file sharing and digital copying wouldn't go away and it's still haven't been solved IMO.
Man VH1 Classic really changed my life at one of my most darkest times watching this show and that channel changed my life between 2012 and 2014 thank you Eddie trunk idk why VH1 would ever change the programming
No way man! When I saw them in the clubs in frisco back in the day…..that was the holy grail 🤘 That whole movement of bands was the shit! Ruthies Inn ect. Good times! Who would have known 😏
I was in germany the cherries brought it over and honestly thought they will not make it. After covering waylon i think they might . Glad i was wrong. My room mate in head quarters battery loved you guys
Back then it was tapes and seeing shows. Bay breed here and we all new they were the new sound ( it was exodus, metalica and slayer to kick it off). Good times
I was aware of them by 83 only because of the Kill 'em All ad in music mags but don't recall hearing them until a friend bought Puppets. He played it in his car and I HATED it! I was all about the LA scene at the time. But a couple of years later I started getting into thrash and they quickly became a favorite. I was surprised at how many songs I knew just from the radio station Z Rock
Seriously? They are not PT Barnum's traveling circus. Their art is music which is meant to also be listened in a private environment and they should also get some share from that.
The amount of talking Dee Snider did when i saw twisted sister years ago was unbelievable, he probably ranted on for 10 mins between every song, no shit , it was a joke, MAN he loves the sound of his own fuckin voice,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,
These tools are in the business and never thought Metallica would go anywhere?!?! Haha I was a 13 yr old kid and thought they were gonna be fuckin huge one day.
I was so diehard Metallica all the way up to when they went mainstream with the Load/Reload/St. Anger and I didn't jump ship, but I really backed off. Fast forward to today, when I saw them onstage with Lady Fucking Gaga, I felt like throwing up. I could deal with the haircuts, fingernail polish and eye liner. I could handle the playing of the National Anthem at San Fran games. Then the new album came out and it was awesome, good old school metal. But that Grammy's show just about lost me for good. At this point, I may as well just hold onto what they were and go about my life. But it will always stick in my craw...
Pretty much sums them up for me, but I did jump ship after the Black album. I'm not saying it was s**t but it just wasn't for me. Got the new album and it was a huge disappointment to me. It feels like leftover riffs from Ride The Lightning and Puppets recycled IMHO. Just not the same. It's pretty hard to be angry full of piss and vinegar when you are now super famous and millionaires. Megadeth has always felt like the disrespected stepchild to Metallica which is why I think they have consistently made better music since the Black album to me. Love and respect both bands but I just don't dig the Black album and beyond. Megadeth has made lousy albums since as well but Endgame, United Abominations, and now Dystopia are still great to listen to my ears. Rock on! \m/
I actually like to hear D sing some Metallica tunes!?? I think he might sound pretty awesome! He’s got a good metal voice that poor James has kind of lost. These days he’s even got a better OH Yeah goin at the present 😂
Dee said he didn't recall Metallica opening for TS, but then he "remembers" whatever he said about the band back then. I don't mean to disrespect Dee, but he always exagerates and re-writes stuff.
The reason he remembers what he said, is cause that night he said that, Dee decided to offer Metallica the headlining show so TS would open for Metallica, cause on the concert adds Metallica logo was huge compared to TS. Dee knew they were there to see Metallica. So TS opened then Dee got to watch Metallica perform.
Very disappointing that Metallica did not stay true to their very own lyrics .. “following our instincts not a trend, go against the grain until the end” ..
They did stay true to half that lyric. They followed the trend in the nineties but it did go against the grain, because it went against what their peers were doing at the time. Maybe they sold out, but why did other thrash bands change direction after Metallica? You can’t tell me the rest of the big four (maybe not slayer) weren’t influenced by Metallica’s change in direction. And Testament and Exodus also followed suit with the Ritual and Force of Habit.
+Tiago Assis " wait, no 2nd chance "..the mustaine fanboys never seize to amaze. mustaine helped with like 4 riffs total over two records. how is that write them all?? he wrote o lyrics, actually he did at first, but james switched the lyrics because dave lyrics were garbage. just to the original jump in the fire/mechanix. absolute rubbish
+Tiago Assis another favorite mustaine line "..i wonder what will happen when metallica run out of my riffs "..dave said that in 1984. well, they released puppets, justice, then the black album. conquered the world and became the biggest band on the planet. not too shabby
+michael andrews hey man, thanks for the reply. Means you got the reference. That was a troll comment up there of a joke I saw, so I was expecting this kind of reaction. Glad you think I'm a Mustaine fanboy, but I like and dislike many things both from Megadeth and Metallica. However the arguments you use here only show not just you're a Metallica fanboy but also a Mustaine 'hater'.
He meant that nobody tought they´ll be THAT big, Metallica after KEA was profiling for been bigger than Saxon or Venom, probably near early Maiden, surprise surprise, years after in 86´they became the most relevant band of Metal in the planet blowing everyone off and then reach top success in 91 when they became the Biggest band fro Metal AND Rock, something nobody again has ever done, but 8 years after no one tought they´ll have that success, except for Mustaine that swears they´ll be bigger than the beatles.
The first chick they had was hotter imo from wat i remember. I wateched tms when it cane out n i remember thinking she was hotter soon as this one came n replaced her. Then again, i DO like brunettes more

Was Mustaine really in the band? I really doubt it.
+iluvkochikame He wasn't when I saw them... Cliff was though.
Was that in 1985? Cause if it was Dave was no longer in the band.
84....no Dave.
Young people into Metallica now don't realize how underground and heavy Metallica were in the 80s,never heard them on the radio back then,me and my best friend in a small Texas town in high school were the only people who knew who they were, man did they go downhill after the 80s.
They were underground for a while, but they were far from heavy.
I thought they were going to go nowhere because all the songs on "Kill 'Em All" were too fast. Nobody knew..... Except us FANS! When I first heard them in 83, or maybe 84 I couldn't get enough!
Fucking miss this show and miss not just the 80's & early 90's, but the metal revival that was created in the mid '00's.

@@robotube7361 haters. Metallicas music is amazing art. People just love to hate.

0:46 mark Mendoza is my dads best friends brother!!!!!!
Do you know him?
“... they’re not gonna go anywhere!” Typical Dee, one of the funniest rockers that ever lived. Saw him do a solo show a few wks ago & he RIPPED.

I have a bootleg from 83/84 when Metallica was opening for TS where Dee sings the "Metal Up Your Ass" chant on Metal Militia.
Dee, what are you wearing

Twisted Sister was a low point in rock music.
thrash was around BEFORE selloutica.

How weak is it to call Metallica a sell out? LOL... youre a kid.
Twisted Sister is glam....not metal!
Glam stands for gay L.A. metal so, technically it is metal... However twisted sister is originally from N.Y, so, it's not glam. lol
I consider them rock. They weren't as hedonistic as some of those glam bands.
Cajun9000 And you suck
Glam is a look, metal is a sound. So you make no sense.
