      @@RadityoPramAdi i love his guitar work on the “keyboard” albums. The solo on red sector is one of my favorites… so melodic, understated yet perfect for the song. Rick beato has a great segment on guitarists and listed him as one of the 6 or 7 innovators of rock guitar.

    • @foskco87
      @foskco87 2 года назад +2

      Countless guitar solos that are not only technically masterful, but incredibly unique, melodic, and full of imagery. Songs like YYZ, Xanadu, Red Barchetta, Limelight, La Villa Strangiato just to name a few off the top of my head. His solos are always so tasteful to the feel of the song, as if it is more of a verse of the song than a guitar solo. He has seamless transitions between lead and rhythm parts through odd time signatures which is even harder in a 3 piece where every mistake and missed note is going to be evident. Alex is every bit as much of a music legend and prodigy of his instrument as Geddy and Neil are, period.

      When asked about his influences, Petrucci always says it's "the Steves and the Als". Steve Morse, Steve Vai, Steve Howe, Al Di Meola, Allan Holdsworth and, of course, Alex Lifeson. He's always said that out of all of them, Alex Lifeson was probably the most influential. In other words, he's a MAJOR Rush fan. He was probably fan-boying out of his mind sitting next to Geddy.

      I don't think Neil and Mike Portnoy were, like, buddies or anything. MP made a fuss in the music press over some negative comments that Neil made about a Rush tribute album that DT contributed to, as well as some comments which MP interpreted to be anti-American. Then Neil called MP on the phone and they made up. That was probably the extent of their relationship but, MP being MP, he started name-dropping Neil afterwards like they were pals. I'm not sure if they ever even met face to face.

The thing that impessed me most about Lifeson is he doesn't have an ego. He had Gary Moore, Steve Morse, Eric Johnson, Paul Gilbert all open for Rush. All of them are better than him but he chose to learn from them by watching them instead of feeling threatened.

    I truly respect John's humbleness. There have been so many people that have said over the years "DT is what Rush wished they could have been". This proves they actually have a respect for them and the fans are wrong.

    • @zx7-rr486
      @zx7-rr486 9 лет назад +14

      LudwigSC93 They are indeed so wrong. Without Rush there would be no DT. And personally I think Rush's music far surpasses DT's, who only had one awesome album, Images and Words. Rush covered far more musical ground than DT. Just listen to Hemispheres, then Moving Pictures, then Grace Under Pressure, then Power Windows and Hold Your Fire. Just about every album Rush did is essential listening, IMO. Power Windows, for me, is an absolute masterpiece.
      As for technical ability, I would say Peart matches Portney (and of course is far more of a drum God on account of influencing so many and doing it 20 years earlier!), and Geddy easily triumphs over Myung.
      Tonally I would say that Lee is one of the best sounding bass players ever. Seriously, how many Myung bass-lines do you remember? Geddy's bass-lines are some of the best ever recorded, by anyone, anywhere. Lifeson also has awesome tone and feel, and of course co-wrote all of Rush;s music. Whilst Petrucci has impeccable technique, I would far rather listen to Lifeson. I would also say that Lee's voice is far cooler and more characteristic than LaBrie's, even though he is not a singer first.
      Also, from the point of view of arrangements, it is not fair to compare a 5 piece band to a 3 piece band.

    • @LudwigSC93

    Geddy’s answer is both surprising (it’s actually more difficult to write that way) and an obvious reason why rush has stayed together in its current form for so many decades. What pulls bands apart at the seams is ego and resentment (john could probably tell a tale or two about that if he trusted you and you caught him in an honest mood).
    The fact that these guys can work together and only run with the ideas that truly work is musical perfection. It’s the fountain of musical youth that most bands never find.

      @davegto67 actually Eddie Van Halen knew exactly who Alex was. In fact, Eddie was once asked, in an interview, what it felt like to be the world's greatest guitarist. His response was, "ask Alex lifeson."

    Please, extend my thanks to your friends Alex Živojinović Lifeson and Neil Peart.

    Petrucci - a master in his own right - has immense respect (and awe) for Geddy (Alex, Neil and Rush). Both guys have no explaining to do to anyone and yet they're both incredibly human. I gotta love that about both of them as people. The "musician" part speaks for itself.

    Rush and DT are two of 5 bands/artists (the others being Eric Johnson, mark tremonti (of creed/alter bridge fame) and journey) who have shaped me into the musician I am today. They're all my heroes and honest to god i feel johns sort of starstruck vibe he's got going on but it's awesome that he maintained his cool. It happened to me last year when I saw mark tremonti play a solo gig in Cleveland and i got to meet and chat with him without any meet and greet kinda thing and it was so difficult to maintain my cool. I went up to him and I'm like "mark! Awesome show man!" And we started talking about guitars and writing and wrestling but in the back of my mind I was going "holy shit....I am standing side by side talking with one of my heroes." I was shaking in my boots in the back of my mind and I'm sure that's how John petrucci was feeling haha. We're all human beings in the end. God bless geddy Lee and rush as well as John petrucci and Dream theater

    Rush should collectively write a survival manual for the 'rock n roll' lifestyle. All 3 of them are in their mid-60's and still talk and act with complete cognizance. On their first tour with Kiss Gene Simmons said he never saw any of them hanging out at the typical 'sex, drugs, and rock n roll' after parties. They were all quietly sitting in their hotel rooms reading books. (And this was the 70's!!!) I think a big part of it was all of them came from loving, supporting families that gave them their level heads. The temptations have taken out so many talented artists that fame and money allow within easy reach.

I had the honor of semi-meeting John P. one time behind the building they were playing downtown San Diego He was on the phone, as I noticed him from across the street. I walked over and gestured for him to sign something I had and shook his hand without saying a word. I didn't want to interrupt him by being star struck or a fanboy. I never know what to say to my musical hero's when I get the chance to meet them anyway so it was cool.
