That was awesome to watch! Finally the guitar god judges his mortal servants lol. For anyone (guitar nerds) wondering about the trick at 5:22: it's an inverted power chord. Normally on a 7string guitar the guy would play the chord like "5 7 7", but he has only 6 strings so he plays only the "7 7" part with the 5th of the chord as the bass note and the root is a higher note. This kind of power chord is a little dirtier, but less bassy and, because the strings produce a low octave sub frequency anyway, it sounds just as fine even with the low root missing. Big example of this is how Smoke On The Water riff is played. Just sharing some insight on stuff that always fascinated and bugged me when I was first starting out! Hope it helps someone!

I'll take a video of him and post it in YT.
Your most difficult solo is the outro of The Best of Times. Just check out on any youtube channel, i'm sure you won't find it easily. Because that solo is f*ckin' crazy. Almost imposible to play it clean.
The technique for tricking the ear that a note is being played at a lower octave is by playing the power chord for the note you desire, but remove the root (since you don't have the string for that) and then play the 5th above its octave...essentially a stacked or inverted power chord. Ex. tuning E-A-D @ 0-0-2 or 2-2-4. Stepping the 5th of the E5 chord down to the 3rd changes the chord to be a E5/B chord, minus the low B.
I wish I could play half as good as these players. I'm a very good bassist, but I've always wanted to shred, I just never tried to learn, don't know why. Good video, it makes me want to pick the guitar back up.

He has non Majesty guitar... so I'm sorry... he's out!
I'd love to watch John commenting on Dr. Viossy's cover of Best of Times.
What a positive guy! John blesses modern music with his humility, kindness, and of course his legacy of amazing tunes. We can all learn not just from his riffs but his character. I remember the first time I tried playing thru Wild Stringdom. This guy is next level creative.
Love this! Greetings from Singapore!
The Pull Me Under cover... I remember it from years ago. It should have been credited to the O'Keefe Music Foundation, no?
*John Petrucci After He Goes Home and Practices for the last 87 hours*
"Yeah, that's right Petrucci, you're just as good if not better than those covers you watched, you're a great guitar player"
Must include Dr. Viossy "The best of times" guitar solo cover
Thought the same
Agree
And Damage Control as well!!
what a lovely bloke. great covers by people too!
3:09 - stoked to see Travis Montgomery featured and watched by the man himself. Travis man, if you're out there, your chops and playing have blown me away for years. Your technique is just mind-blowing. Kudos, huge kudos.
that aural illusion is called Paracusia. it means auditory hallucinations. its like one of those majic eye thingys but for the ear.
I had to do that "aural illusion" when Thrice started utilizing drop A on Fire.
ForOrAgainstUs what is it? I dont understand.
Myfavsandlikes I can’t read music, but he’s talking about how in the video the dude with the six string guitar played a Dream Theater song that was meant for a 7 string. So, dude above you said there’s a Thrice song that he did the same “trick” with.
ForOrAgainstUs quick question would that 6 string “aural illusion” work on a Baritone?
JP is guitar god
If you like Petrucci, you should check out Steve Vai. He is also really good.
Steve Vai is extraordinarily talented, BUT a lot of what he does is too out their for my tastes. But I will not deny his greatness. John is still my favourite.
Steve Vai and Petrucci are both amazing guitarists but they have different styles
@@jessea4438 he has no feel.. All he can do is play a million notes per second
@@ChessCat1500 Watch him play live.
I met John one month ago on Namm convention here in Anaheim, California. Talk with him it was insane. Great dude
Awesome John. Thanks for making The Astonishing album. I love that album, its one of my favourite. I went to see you guys on that tour and then I brought my 11yr old son to see you live on The Distance Over Time tour and bought him a tour shirt. Now he's playing a lot of DT songs. I'll take a video of him and post it in YT.
You need to see cover " Abim finger" , he was since 10 years old playing song of dream Theater n aranggement solo guitar of John Petrucci
Up
Your most difficult solo is the outro of The Best of Times. Just check out on any youtube channel, i'm sure you won't find it easily. Because that solo is f*ckin' crazy. Almost imposible to play it clean.
John Petrucci is a legend.
John is giving these guys a memory that will last a lifetime. Legend!
John Your awesome man!! Totally humble
What a stand-up dude. So humble! 🤘🏻
I’m really curious to see and hear the end result of making the music even harder. I hope he follows through with that when the next album comes out.
God: You can't beat human evolution, they will learn to adapt.
JP: Hold my Music Man, gotta make stuff harder.
Yeah, there is some amazing talent out there. You are an inspiration to so many!
