Chris Buck’s entry sounded like he pulled it straight out of an Earthless song. Blues guys are good at making stoner rock/metal. Paul’s was very prog metal though.
As a lifelong Metal fan, I do have to congratulate everyone for going outside their norm. I really enjoyed hearing the thought processes behind the riffs, though to me they felt more hard rock than metal. I really like Justin's take- the groove had me thinking of Pantera and the dissonant bend at the start felt very Slayer.
This 👆 "I'm going to spend decades mastering my instrument and use my painstakingly acquired skills to bang out 12 bar blues in E Standard forever as though the last 60 years never happened..."
I like a large portion of the blues, but yeah, I mean all the songs are a bit of the same. Great guitarists among the blues ranks- SRV, Jeff Healey, Clapton, BB King, etc. But 12 bar blues gets boring quickly
I personally enjoyed Paul’s take as he articulated the chord changes so well with that impressive timing, it felt like Dillinger met John Petrucci, absolutely epic interpretation.
Really liked this! Personally: Justin came in so hard with that riff ... clear winner for me. Mick was like the love child of Pantera and Helmet :) Awesome.
@@AnthonyChhan i honestly don’t know how he hasn’t joined a legit band yet his style would be HUGE like the bends he does are crazier than most of the stuff that’s on the air and it sounds better

Justin Guitar: Sounds like Black Sabbath decides to play Groove Metal influenced by Pantera SammyG: Microtonal Metal sounds fukim awesome, I think he's onto something there, though his tone is left to be desired Chris Buck: Phenomenal solo, though that's only it. Everything else is just okay Mick Taylor: Cliché galore though unfortunately the weakest among the rest Paul Davids: Prog is very evident, props for Drop C Conclusion: They did their best and I am all for it.
I was about to write exactly that. Sammys sound was fitting for the riff in my opinion. Davids tone could have done with more gain. I think metal musicians have less issues with sacrificing clarity for more punch, but then again, you need less gain for openly played chords. If you want to chug, a guitar tone with too little gain will sound like coming from a toy guitar. And Justin was just killer. Really loved all of it.
Totally agree! :) Paul, yours was the closest to 'real metal', plus the one that I would really listen (hm, middle part nice variants but, bit weak song structure, more like lets throw this variant too), loved so many parts! Also, the solo Chris did (he is my favorite soloist of the newest guys. globally. 'nuff said) was w-o-w and interesting for a metal one, in the thin line of 'hell yes' and 'yes but not metal' haha. Rest of the others GREAT job, but, to a true metal fan, sound more like reminiscing of metal, than, real metal that you could listen, more like a fun game/experiment
This video was even cooler than I expected. I thought it would be re-interpreting famous metal riffs in a non-meta style. The creativity on display here and technical discussions are indeed inspiring.
Justin, holy crap, that riff was the sludgiest thing I've heard in a while. Chris track was sick as well, if he could stretch it to about an hour I think it'd be on par with Dopesmoker. I wish grunge weren't dead lol
All of you nailed it, man. Justin: Very stoner and groovy. I liked it. Samurai: So Thrashy. This is the one I liked the most. Chris: What a face-melting solo. Want more. Mick: This one is thrashy/groovy too. Wanted more tho. Paul: Prog as it gets. Loved the constant beat change, but never missing the groove. This was a cool experiment, learned a lot today.
This was one of my favorite videos that you’ve done. I think I liked your submission the best (perhaps setting up the challenge gave you an intrinsic edge over the competition), followed by Justin. He melted my face off, which is the ultimate goal. So good!!!
I would love to see people like Jared dines and other metal people play and write blues licks. Almost the exact opposite of this video but with the same idea!
I saw Zakk Wylde and Andreas Kisser on an interveiw show here in Brazil once, and they did some kind of blues jam... Zakk disappointed me so much. Kisser was amazing tho.
@@perryborn2777 here's the thing... like all forms of music, if it's not in your heart, it's like a child who mimics the action of a parent. the actions might be close, or even correct by accepted standards. however, they aren't real. all of those guys are talented. in their chosen genre, they obviously excel. i don't knock their efforts at all. music won't move people if it's not created by the movement of the artists heart. it has to be genuine. as cool as all these guys are, none of them are metal heads. this was an exercise for them.
As a metal head, Sammy G and Paul delivered the best riffage. But Mick’s solo? Unreal. So impressed. He would sound right at home on a great metal song with the emotional bends and shred chops like that.
As someone who does appreciate metal, I can say all this was ranging from good to totally awesome. I really appreciated Mick with his slayer-esque in between step thingies and his performing attitude :). Great stuff mate, I really love these cross-genre videos. Chris is the clear winner for me, but all were great. What I like is that everybody didn't immediately go for the most gain, the lowest dropped tuning, the most chunk... I mean, there is more to Metal than djent and death metal. It's not about the amount of noise. Nobody ever goes for the light but lightning fast riffs of Power Metal or the airy but rocking licks of Glam of the neck wrecking palm muted bonanza of Thrash. So yeah, wonderful to hear the guys here not falling into the djent trap :D.

@@billovsky stop thinking in genres
isn't stoner just blues with more distortion tho
Justins riff was down right incredible. Everyone performed admirably. But Justins stood out exceptionally strongly to me.
Chris Buck's guitar solo was just something else man HOLY CRAP
Yeah, he’s an AMAZING soloist!
Look at his E string... During the riff... What did you notice... It went cool, although that happened...
Sent chills down my spine. Man. Wicked.
Never heard anything like that before. Kind of life changing.
Agree 100% though Sammy G was getting there.
Justin sounds nothing like hard rock though.
@@EbonyPope fair enough. That's just the kind of vibe I was getting, not a hard definition. What would you say it's closer to?
"I realized all those clichés are what a metal riff is." Says the blues guy.
Good point

"I'm going to spend decades mastering my instrument and use my painstakingly acquired skills to bang out 12 bar blues in E Standard forever as though the last 60 years never happened..."
There isn’t a genre that is more wanky than blues. Just yuck.
@@jakem834 blues is amazing
I like a large portion of the blues, but yeah, I mean all the songs are a bit of the same. Great guitarists among the blues ranks- SRV, Jeff Healey, Clapton, BB King, etc.
But 12 bar blues gets boring quickly
Love the Samurai addition. Also, Paul's effort sounded very much like Metalocalypse/Brendon Small. Dig it.
Imagine if Chris Buck soloed over Paul’s track? My heavens!
Oooohhhh! That would be a killer combo! I would love to hear that.
that's a GREAT GREAT idea! they should do it!!!
MAKE THIS HAPPEN
I personally enjoyed Paul’s take as he articulated the chord changes so well with that impressive timing, it felt like Dillinger met John Petrucci, absolutely epic interpretation.
Paul’s was the best out of all of them lol.. he even chose Progressive as the metal subgenre as a bonus. Amazing!!
2 years on, and I still revisit this to hear Chris and Justin’s submissions.
Really liked this!
Personally: Justin came in so hard with that riff ... clear winner for me.
Mick was like the love child of Pantera and Helmet :) Awesome.
Chris Buck sounds like Chris Buck no matter what lol. His signature play style is undeniable.
Best compliment EVER for any artist!!!!!!! (I also agree with you 100%)
How about the 20 second melodic contest paul had? Chris has a very fine touch
Mr. Buck is by far my favorite guitar player on RUclips. It's definitely a compliment.
@@AnthonyChhan i honestly don’t know how he hasn’t joined a legit band yet his style would be HUGE like the bends he does are crazier than most of the stuff that’s on the air and it sounds better
@@AnthonyChhan like for all i know that’s just not his thing but good god that man needs a contract from a studio with full creative control he could probably get a song in top 100 in sales with his playing alone
I want a whole song, a whole album of Justin Guitar's riff!
Isn’t it funny when you see interviews with metal performers and they are the friendliest people on the planet.
Very inspired playing and refreshing when it comes from a different angle.
Loved it
Chris simply landed a fenomenous and unexpected guitar solo with that tasty bends at the end... Just beautiful.
Justin Guitar: Sounds like Black Sabbath decides to play Groove Metal influenced by Pantera
SammyG: Microtonal Metal sounds fukim awesome, I think he's onto something there, though his tone is left to be desired
Chris Buck: Phenomenal solo, though that's only it. Everything else is just okay
Mick Taylor: Cliché galore though unfortunately the weakest among the rest
Paul Davids: Prog is very evident, props for Drop C
Conclusion: They did their best and I am all for it.
Funny how a man named ‘Mick Taylor’ is deemed the weakest guitarist
@@0w3n27 weakest metal guitarist*
@@jakob4083 *weakest riff among the riffs at the top in someone's opinion.
Totally agree! :)
Paul, yours was the closest to 'real metal', plus the one that I would really listen (hm, middle part nice variants but, bit weak song structure, more like lets throw this variant too), loved so many parts!
Chris Buck continuing to prove that he’s the best soloist in the game right now. Well done, Chris. Absolutely brilliant.
Couldn't agree more. Such a talent!!
and knocked the low E (D) outta the saddle
@@guitrus I thought I was the only one that noticed..
Whaaaat?? You can't be listening to much then fanboy...😂
@@sollyharr Just my opinion, man! No harm no foul.
This video was even cooler than I expected. I thought it would be re-interpreting famous metal riffs in a non-meta style. The creativity on display here and technical discussions are indeed inspiring.
Paul listening to Chris shred a monstrous powerful metal solo:
*Sips from tiny cup while smiling*
Justin, holy crap, that riff was the sludgiest thing I've heard in a while.
Chris track was sick as well, if he could stretch it to about an hour I think it'd be on par with Dopesmoker.
I wish grunge weren't dead lol
i recently had a grunge rock video marathon watching session on youtube.
@@MindsDozer been on that train for about 7 years now 😅😂
All of you nailed it, man.
Samurai seemed so unsure, but I think he actually excelled at this.
Hopefully he will release a full song from it.
Jazz liccs
Yes jazz be more interesting as rock and metal utilize a lot of blues element already
@@AlexSMarie I have 0 knowledge of mental playing but I would’ve thought it’d take more from jazz theory wise
Ola Englund should be interesting!
I saw Zakk Wylde and Andreas Kisser on an interveiw show here in Brazil once, and they did some kind of blues jam... Zakk disappointed me so much. Kisser was amazing tho.
Chris rocked so hard that his low E string came off the bridge saddle. Honestly a first for me!!
Your not a guitarist maybe 🤪
@@HctudYT I am, just haven't experienced that or witnessed that before on the low E string. Could just be a dodgy saddle on the bridge perhaps.

I can't believe there's not more love here for what SammyG gave us.. that was terrific!
imo he had the metalest one. but even though everyone did cool stuff, none of them truly "get" it.
His stood out the most to me tbh
My favorite riff was his
@@cheezyridr Idk man, I think Chris got it pretty well
@@perryborn2777 here's the thing... like all forms of music, if it's not in your heart, it's like a child who mimics the action of a parent. the actions might be close, or even correct by accepted standards. however, they aren't real. all of those guys are talented. in their chosen genre, they obviously excel. i don't knock their efforts at all. music won't move people if it's not created by the movement of the artists heart. it has to be genuine. as cool as all these guys are, none of them are metal heads. this was an exercise for them.
As a metal head, Sammy G and Paul delivered the best riffage.
But Mick’s solo? Unreal. So impressed. He would sound right at home on a great metal song with the emotional bends and shred chops like that.
extra point for Chris for knocking that low E string out of its saddle
Notice that too...
Yeah, and then keeping on at it like it didn't matter. Which, apparently, it didn't lol!
As someone who does appreciate metal, I can say all this was ranging from good to totally awesome. I really appreciated Mick with his slayer-esque in between step thingies and his performing attitude :).
Paul himself stole the show for me, the complex rhythm changes getting you on the wrong foot is something I enjoy from recent and current bands. Everyone put a ton of work into these and the result shows!
Chris Buck had genuinely the greatest solos I've heard in a very long time. Given I dont listen to Metal as much as I used to but the skill is Sooo there.
it sounded like srvs metal submission
These collabs were a brilliant idea paul ,creates a great sense of community
Great stuff mate, I really love these cross-genre videos. Chris is the clear winner for me, but all were great. What I like is that everybody didn't immediately go for the most gain, the lowest dropped tuning, the most chunk... I mean, there is more to Metal than djent and death metal. It's not about the amount of noise. Nobody ever goes for the light but lightning fast riffs of Power Metal or the airy but rocking licks of Glam of the neck wrecking palm muted bonanza of Thrash. So yeah, wonderful to hear the guys here not falling into the djent trap :D.
Metal is a sensation, a spirit - Chris Buck got it in one. I'd buy his track.
His solo gave me huge Opeth vibes, when they covered Bridge of sighs. The solo on there has a very similar feel, with these amazing bends
He is an exceptional musician
@@muenchhausenmusic That song is the original almost note for note, not knocking it but it sounds as though you haven't heard the original version.

For me Samurai Guitarists riff sounded the most metal of them all (and it sounded fucking sick - great stuff). The rest was more rock or prog rock than metal.
I personally disagree, I think they were all metal, but okay
Yes the samurai and paul was the most metal the other was like rock or something betwen
His riff was sick!
I thought the different styles of rock infusion made the riffs much more metal in the sense of expanding on what metal can be.
@@mysticmagicsmurfdarklord6844 I think it really depends on your taste and what you've grown up too. Personally I wouldn't put f.e. Black Sabbath in the Metal Genre but I can definitely see, why people might do so.
Chris Buck needs to start a fucking metal band, and I need to find a microtonal guitar. That Samurai riff was sick.
Paul, yours was the "djenty-est" of them all. So glad you tuned to Drop C. I have HB LP that I keep in Drop C. You all definitely need to make full songs out of these.
DUDE! How these guys aren’t “metal” is beyond me. The challenge is opening a little door in their minds. Awesome.🤘🏻
As a huge metal fan, there are aspects of each that really hold their own in the metal world. When Justin guitar hit that part at 2:45, yess! Overall a cool project, good with a guitar clearly translates across the spectrum of music.
If the idea were riffs, then Justin takes the win here! Great great riff. I would want to hear the rest of that song for sure. Chris did an amazing solo ( I'm sure he even does them while getting his tea ready or something, that is how good he is...) as always. Samurai did something that I am still trying to understand. And that makes me want more! Very very cool. Mick went cliche and Paul all prog. Nice job everyone, but Justin just nailed it here!
As a metalhead this was very entertaining to watch! All of you guys definitely did a great job for non-metalheads!
Dudes!!! Paul that was killer!!! I'm a pinky-challenged guitarist. I have played metal most of my life. That was both educational and entertaining!! Thank you all so much!!!🎶
Absolutely heard Geezer Butler’s influence as Chris Buck’s riff began.
Face: melted. Makes me want to see Joey Landreth join The Sword.
Justin is incredible. He taught me everything I know, and he's always killing it. He's so attuned to music, such an elegant player...
I´m subbed to his channel since... uff... The beginning of time it feels like.. Still watching his lessons even if it´s stuff I already know.
He has just a nice way to teach and he´s a blues brother by heart :)
Me too, my first online guitar teacher. Thanks justin..
8:48 went wild, I could listen to that on repeat 🤘🏻
Justin's is so swampy - utterly awesome - need to see where that can go. And Paul - your riff is joyful - Sci Fi - and could be so interesting if developed fully.
Agree!! 100.
I came back to watch Paul again...that needs to be a full track.
Justin's definitely got a a solid sound with a groove to it. My favorite out of all of them.
@@LifelinkTV Agreed, in terms of the riff I actually liked the most.....Justin totally wins.
They all did a solid job, but Justin killed it.
I love how it almost has an Alice in Chains feel to it....given the slightly bluesy feel mixed with the semi-tone dissonance and bent low notes. Very Jerry Cantrell at times....
With a dirtier sound and slow pace it would be a very interesting base for a stoner/doom track.
The Chris Buck solo was absolutely disgusting oh my god. Would love to hear a full version
Have you notice his last string... It jumped...
😂
@@RONALD-mr6ov Yes! @9:00 minutes LOL! Awsome!

Heard a little bit of prog metal almost in Paul's riff, had the energy and feel of a dream theater song. Lots of good things going on without becoming cluttered. Well done!
Paul, if you, Samurai Guitarist and Chris Buck released a metal album, I would 100% buy a copy.
Paul’s was the best. OMG it was so technically sound. Also enjoyed Chris. It’s amazing how his touch is always there. You can always tell it’s him playing.
Justins reminded me so much of clutch if clutch had been a new band in 2024, and im.here for it, sounded awesome seriously.
OMG!! Justin’s riff was so good! If he said he was a metal artist I would believe Him.. That riff was literally the best metal riff I’ve ever heard; nice job….
I liked them all, but Justin just nailed it like he's done it all his life. He even channeled his inner Rob with the Uke Bass. The little bit of nastiness in the chords immediately made my face scrunch up and my head start bangin'. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album lol
The middle riff from Paul’s section was actually very good. Reminded me of Leprous a bit, but just a more standard note choice than they would use
Does have that Leprous feel, if not for the generic drumming
It reminded me of on the back of Angeles
Add AaaAaaAa and you got a real leprous song
Your proggy stuff was so much better than expected. Love it!
As a bass player I love that the uke bass has the biggest sound.
yeah ... that´s really nice
Paul, Your piece was just epic. As a long term metal head i must say, I would love to hear the whole track. Its amazing to hear such a harmonic genius play metal, it is possibly just the best thing ive heard among the proggressive stuff in years. Thanks
I love when you do these collab challenges. All the riffs were pretty beefy and I love the groove everyone put into their tracks. But Paul, seriously.... Viewers' submissions for follow up videos would be awesome
