    This is probably the best wake jump tutorial video on RUclips, so simple, yet so effective.
    It is so difficult as a beginner to resist the urge to flatten off the board just before hitting the wake, for me the best way to overcome this was to take an incredibly short approach, like 3 feet and cut all the way through the wake.

    • @Shaun.Murray
      @Shaun.Murray  6 лет назад +9

      Great feedback FavStaR69! And I use that technique of giving my students a super short approach so they don't have time to build up speed and then flatten off.

    This helped me so much! I started snowboarding way before wakeboarding so i wasnt aware it was all about maintaining a strong edge through the wake to create more pop. I kept flattening out and basically ollied off the wake.

      Love to hear it Devin! Most wakeboarders don't realize what they're leaving on the table when they don't understand how much "pop" they can get by cutting through the bottom of the wake and then releasing their edge. It has to do with what the board is doing "in" the water, not "on" the water.

    The part that actually clicked for me is when you were talking about a trampoline. I have a friend (and me) who need to work on pop. I'm going to imagine I'm on the trampoline and just taking a bounce. I'm also definitely going to work on cutting standing tall. This was super helpful. Thanks Shaun.

    WOW! I have been doing it wrong for years! I have been squatting into my cut since i can remember. This just blew my mind, and you made it look effortless. With squatting i needed to cut into the wake really hard and really far away in order to even go wake to wake and when i hit the wake, i felt like i was getting the crap kicked out of me, it wasnt smooth at all. You did it from around 8-10 feet away, that is NUTS. You and parks are my favorite riders. Thanks for this info, i cannot wait to try it tomorrow!

    Great idea to go through this with this level if detail. It would be interesting to see how long it takes to develop that specific skill though. For the record, I got your original Detention video when it came out, and still can't get that kind of pop with the style that you display in this casual demonstration.
    Would be great to see different people's progress over time, trying to apply this specific drill.

      Interesting thought Metaldude but I find that there is such a range of people's ability to progress that it would be difficult to say what is average. Plus, I wouldn't want to put it into someone's head what they should expect. Thanks for the idea though

    Been "riding" wakeboard for years, but never been pulled by boat that made good wake to jump. Bought ski boat 2 werks ago...Just tried this going heel side. Cut in from about 10ft out, Stood tall right at wake, wrecked my front leg knee. Soon as I stood tall and board "popped" immediate pain in lateral knee. Awesome, limping all day and days before going camping @lake...no boarding for me for at least 2 weeks if ever again...

      Hi, I noticed your comment a couple months ago and wanted to respond now that I also got hurt - but doing something else. I'm empathetic that you got hurt 4 years ago, but I wanted to give you some advice. When doing something new, it's smart to take your time and consider your skill level. "Within your skill level" you'll often hear. You also were unfamiliar with your new boat/wake and I don't know what your driver was doing, but slowing the boat speed down to 16/18mph probably would have helped you build a foundation and get practice before trying to send yourself hard into the air. Also consider your board size and binding setup - wider stance and "ducked" might help your knees. So, I faceplanted harder than ever last Saturday and it was my own fault - I think I stopped leaning against the line when doing a sequence of surface 180s and I might have also gotten a little caught on the outside of the wake somehow. Also, many injuries happen when we're getting tired so try taking it easy later in the day! I hope you've been well. Take care!

    Been watching and studying your videos just trying to understand the concepts of wakeboarding going into ski season. Currently I can wakeboard alright and land a full wake jump, but the problem is I’m really only getting it through speed and height of the jump. Hopefully I can implement a lot of what you’re saying in order to be able to do better jumps and easier, especially as the basis to learning bigger and better tricks. 👍🏻

    • @Shaun.Murray
      @Shaun.Murray  Год назад +2

      Take your time on the 1 wake jumps w a little longer rope 65-70', 18-19 mph, and take a short approach (10' from the wake), to work on standing tall, leaning shoulders against the line and build up power to then release at the wake. You got this!

    • @adamhale6672
      @adamhale6672 6 лет назад

      I would say with the beginner boards it makes it harder for sure. That’s not to say that you can’t jump or do tricks but it is designed to be stable and not to cut/pop. I practiced for a long time on an old O’Brien and got pretty far!! I upgraded to a pro board once I could jump wake to wake and was getting more serious. It made a big difference with handling and getting a pop. Definitely less stable though! (But eventually I found myself cutting down on my fun size later on for more maneuverability)

    • @liamnowels5108
      @liamnowels5108 4 года назад

      In your case your probably not making it all the way across the wake. When landing flat think of your legs as a spring, when you land bend your legs to absorb the Impact of the landing. If you look in this video you’ll see him sink really low when he lands in the flat. A lot of Wakeboarders that have bad knees have knee braces to help absorb the impact so they don’t have to use they’re legs as much to absorb the impact.

    What does crushing at the wake mean? at 3:10

    • @Shaun.Murray
      @Shaun.Murray  6 месяцев назад

      Good question. It means that your knees are absorbing the energy at the wake that is trying to push you into the air. So if you crush, you are not going into the air like your are aiming to do. Make sense?

    • @Shaun.Murray
      @Shaun.Murray  4 года назад +2

      It's really as you're going up the wake. Best way to practice is to slow the boat down, take a short approach and do small one wake jumps to work on that concept and timing.
