Chewbacca Speaks English

- In this behind the scenes footage of Star Wars, we see actor Peter Mayhew speaking Chewie's lines in English (or Galactic Standard). Kinda jarring, isn't it. From the Deleted Magic fan edit by Garrett Gilchrist.

Somehow I love that "Arruuuuuurrrrrrrr!!!" translates into an extremely British "That old man's mad!".
Well I figured it was something along those lines.
“Well you said it Chewy!”
"I am groot."
That's why you should do your Duolingo, kids
You litterally said it chewie.
This is what Han actually hears whenever Chewie speaks.

Maybe chewy never really could speak in any language Maybe it was all in han solos mind. you know like that dog show with Elijah Wood

it's an english accent as peter mayhew is from surrey, england.

It makes so much sense that the cast thought Star Wars was going to crash and burn knowing that the movie seemed like this from their point of view.
Ngl, if a friend of a friend of a friend asked me to be in his crazy idea for a movie based on a Japanese film from 20 years ago but with space nazis and a talking dog-man, I probably would've said "sure whatever" but not bothered showing up to the premiere.
It was also a total mess and didn't even have a basic point of tension in the finale. The editors radically changed the movie in post to make it good. Have a look at "How Star Wars Was Saved in the Edit", it's fascinating.
@@AD-kv9kj It's also not true, one might say editorially manufactured
@@AD-kv9kj Saved in edit, and sound design. The sound design, man...
IS NO ONE SERIOUSLY GOING TO SAY IT?! Alright, I guess it's up to me.
-Yes, it seemed like it would crash and burn, FROM A CERTAIN POINT OF VIEW
The idea that Chewie, in wookiee speech is much more well spoken than Han is highly amusing. It was a real missed opportunity for the new movies to not play up how intelligent Chewbacca is instead of degrading him into a pet that gets passed from one human to another.
Honestly. The Wookiee was a genius, he just owed Han a life debt.
they didn't in the originals either, he was essentially comic relief
Another opportunity lost is that Chewbacca is supposed to be extremely strong but I can't really think of a single example in any of the Star Wars movies where that is demonstrated.
Peter Mayhew has a bad knee, so they got a new guy to play him in the sequel trilogy. But in The Force Awakens Chewie gets shot and I thought, "Ooh! They could have Peter play Chewie for this part of the movie and his limp would fit in perfectly!" but that was yet another missed opportunity. On the other hand, something similar may have been offered to Peter but he turned it down in favor of being an on-set consultant for the new guy.
@@JustWasted3HoursHere actually, Peter Mathew had surgeries and reprised his role for TFA. It was after that when they replaced him.
@@jordanhendrix2619 Joonas Suotamo was Mayhew's body double in The Force Awakens though, doing scenes that required extra physical activity. I'd be interested to know what scenes he did and which scenes Peter did.

About 10 years ago, my dad unknowingly sat next to Peter Mayhew on a connecting flight from Sacramento for 2 hours. He helped him hold his cane as he was struggling to find room to move around. They talked on and off and he said he was very kind and polite. When the flight was over Mr. Mayhew thanked him and left. It wasn’t until last year my dad realized that he sat next to Chewbacca for two hours lol. RIP Chewie
Your old man’s mad.
@@truesoulghost2777 Boy you said it, Trueie...
Aww what a lovely story! Props to your dad for helping him!
I just realized that there must’ve been actual lines for every single time that Chewbacca spoke. That’s a lot of lines that will never be heard.
its probably in the script...
Someone should ask Harrison Ford.
Its like that in most movies with a created language. The actors all deliver thier lines in the same language so everyone knows where they are in the script, then only the characters who "speak" that language would react like they understand.
@@KomradeDoge True! It’s the same thing they do with Groot; characters who can understand him get a special translated version of the script, so even if “I Am Groot” is the only thing uttered on set, the people who need to know what he’s saying can. (In the first film it was just Rocket, but all the Guardians understand him by the “Teen Groot” post-credit in Vol. 2.)
Why isn't that version of the script out there?
There is a rumor going around that the Old Man is mad!

Is anyone else blown away by the fact there were actual lines written in the script for Chewie?
This means that whenever he growled throughout the three movies, there was a written line of dialogue.
I mean, I get why, for practical reasons (to help the other actors, especially Ford), but still.
They did the same for Knight Rider.
That's why the first part of season 1, Kitt and Michael didn't quite seem to connect.
After Anthony Daniels and David Hasselhoff met at a party, the rest of the show was great.
During the shoots, someone off screen would read Kitt's lines, and David would make like he was talking to the car.
Anthony Daniels was at the other end of the country, playing Mr. Feeny.

@@holliswilliams8426 You promoted him just like that! :D
Fun fact, the actor in the costume actually delivers lines in order for the other actors to know on set what he's saying and to help film in terms of dialogue length. That way the rest of the cast doesn't need to look off at a chalkboard for that... The actors know only Han understands the Wookie... Language? But it just helped everyone with delivering dialogue.

Better than Vader's original voice.
+dafuqawew That was because he said the Star Wars was shit and he didn’t want to be associated with it. When making A New Hope he thought the film would bomb and no one would like it, so he requested to be removed from the credits in order to never be associated with it.
From what I read, that isn't true. Prowse didn't harbor any ill feelings towards Star Wars beforehand. He was even offered a choice between playing Chewbacca or Vader.
xxlCortez you’re so right

Peter Mayhew and David Prowse, as well as Kenny Baker, were able to get iconic personalities across without a single line of dialogue in the finished film. The mark of a great actor.
Apparently there's a secret version of the script with Chewie and Artoo's lines in, because they've always actually said scripted lines only to be dubbed over with other stuff.
Crusty Pete's Day Old Meat Platter I'd love to read that so much.
Don't know if this is true, but I heard Artoo swears like a sailor! (But it makes sense.) XD
GoDamnWeird Makes perfect sense, classic comedy pairing, uncouth yob and delicate pillock.
The one scene I can definitely see this happening with Artoo is when he has a convo with Threepio about replaying Leia's message after Luke gets called for lunch/dinner by Beru. Even the beeping after Threepio tells him "No, I don't think he likes you at all," sounds like Artoo's version of "Do you?"
In Ben Burtt's language/travel guide/sound autobiography book, he has written out one of the scenes with dialogue between Artoo and Threepio.
Now next time my dog growls all I’m gonna hear it say is: “that ol’ man’s mad!”

RIP Mr Mayhew…he had a home not that far away from where I used to live (years ago) and since my family was part of the local SW costuming groups we went out to dinner with him several times. I can definitely imagine him politely snarking at the other actors from within the suit. He and the original Boba were the two actors that we saw the most when I was active since they had somewhat local residences.
Our groups were often tasked with escorting actors at conventions and other events both to add ambiance and to serve as a buffer. I don’t know if the groups are doing this anymore, my health tanked a while before Disney bought the franchise and then family issues interfered once I got better.
