Great video, great detailed explanations actually showing the tricky parts. Thanks!
Great video - the detail on the distributer removal and oil pump priming was really helpful... thanks!
Thanks dale I’m restoring a 1985 Jeep cj7 and these videos have be so helpful. Appreciate all your hard work.
Dale, thank you for the video. I have no distributor, I have a DIS system, but you can't remove the oil pump shaft, otherwise your pump will not work, so I will prime it but don't really have to worry about the position... it will be a good opportunity to inspect that pump shaft and see how it's been holding up on it's own.
16 mm open box wrench works great to hit the oil pump in.
Wobble extensions - you won’t regret buying a set!
Get the timing light and confirm timing a couple degrees variance is small at distributor but big inside cyclinders
Great video!
To prime, stuff it full of assembly lube, then prime with a biggggg lonnng cutoff flat screwdriver in a drill with cam synchro off, clockwise btw.. you will feel when the system primes itll build lots of resistance...
Doing this very same project today... hoping that a new oil pan gasket will also help cure my mystery oil leaks!
Use Red loctite on oil pump bolts, don't worry about torque.
Great video this week!!
Thank you. Project is coming along nicely.
Thanks for the video! Answered several questions. My '87 YJ started making an engine noise but would stop after driving for 5 miles or so. I believe it is a faulty oil pump not getting oil throughout the engine properly. I have changed the pump and will be priming it later hopefully fixing the issue. Thanks for the detail in your video! I’m a GA aircraft mechanic and there’s basically no difference between the aviation grade make a gasket and the auto stuff just get the right kind for your application . Also the FAA really frowns on using it unless the manufacturer says to use it.
A crows foot is what you needed so you could have torqued the bolts you could not reach. :)
Jeep Solid, nice!!!
Nicely done
Thank you.
Hey,
I have a 95 wrangler 2.5L. I replaced the oil sending unit because I was having the oil pressure at 100 while running and acting erratically. Once changed it seems to be working , and when you cold start it I get around 40 psi. After it is warm it can drop to almost 0 at idle. While I drive it goes to around 30ish. Oil level is on safe and on the line for full as it should.
i find "shop cat" to be very entertaining.
at :44 you say with engine in vehicle..then at 1:49 the engine is out?..what did i miss?
Nice
All the best..
Thanks!
Couldn’t you use a crows foot on your torque wrench for that one bolt? I used to only prime it with petroleum jelly, but I’m going to use your distributor method as well. Great tip!!
You could use a "crows foot" for the hard to get bolt. As I understand for every inch of extension you used, add one foot pound of torque. And inch pounds to inch pounds per inch of extension.
Haven't heard that before, but makes sense.
Bad sealing connection between pick up tube & pump may be more an issue then we realize. SUCKING AIR??
Need to look into this more for low or erratic oil pressure. I had this issue, found oil pan sump pushed up from rock crawling.
I think oil pickup actually got pushed up and affected the connection at the pump. Checked all the rod/crank bearings- (good). Pulled tube, was loose, put RTV on, slip fit but did not press it in. Now when back together I still have somewhat low and erratic oil pressure.
You can use a crow foot socket to torque it.
I can smell that sealant from here.
Oh, man! Haha yep
If we are rebuilding an engine with a new oil pump, should we have the camshaft set to TDC and Ignition Coil set to 1st spark plug ?
Woot!!
Haha! Thanks
Hi, how do you know if all your lifters are pumping? I did mine with the valve cover off and the front(#1) and rear (#6) rockers don't seem to be filling up as much...
I have a shop cat I thought I was the only one 😂
Haha. She’s a good one 👍
🖤
Can I use an impact driver instead of an impact wrench?
Which torque did you use on the oil pump for 17ft-pd? 3/8?
I did a rear main seal at 95k ...i really wish I thought about this when I did that seal...becayse now I have to get oil dripped on my head...again...
I know it’s been years so you may not even check these anymore but the rebuild kit is no longer available on Amazon, do you have any other recommendations for rebuild kits by chance?
Does the 2.5L and 4.0L have the same oil pump?
Same concept on a 1997 2.5L tj?
qq, by error, when I was changing my distributor cap I lose the correct order of the rotor and the cap as I change it for a new one, how I could sync it back?
You'll have to turn the crank and find tdc for cylinder 1.
✅
Glad you did this.... I have noticed that my oil pressure starts out @ 25 PSI when cold....but is only @ 12 PSI at idle and or low RPM's when cruising after the oil has been brought up to operating temperature... the PSI goes higher when the RPM's go higher after reaching operating temperature... Thinking my pump may be going.... What do you think, Dale....anyone?
Piggy backing off George Hamberhill in the comments.....Why did you have to change it?
Yeah, I'd start with the easy stuff that wears out, like replacing the oil pump isn't a bad idea. You may do that and still have issues, but you got a new pump and eliminated a potential cause. These pumps do go out..
I'm using this new pump on my 4.0 rebuild
Oil pumps do not create pressure. Main bearings do. Pumps create CFM which is a completely different force. They either work or they do not. The CFM will not change regardless of the PSI in the bearings.
If you have your pan off, why not do rods and main bearings while replacing the pump?
That's likely where your pressure is going
Easy easy job..
I built a 4.6 and just rebuilt an old pump with a kit, lapped the housing on a piece of glass to the tight side of the spec and it has 60 cold 25 hot idle, that's with cam saver grooves cut in the lifter bores bleeding off some pressure as well..
I have the same exact problem on mine right now. Did you ever figure out what was wrong with your.
Hey I noticed on the new oil pump there is a cotter pin looking thing. What do we need to do with that??? thanks
Did you ever find out?
Old one has it too
Leave it alone
Did the engine have low oil pressure before you replaced the oil pump? And if so did the oil pressure improve any at all after installing the new oil pump?
My oil pressure is ok, but using this new pump on my engine rebuild
@@JeepSolid Oh yes that's right. Here's why I asked. Jeep is a 1997 with a 2.5L 5spd. My oil pressure is good until the engine is at operating temperature. Then the oil pressure drops so low at idle that the engine light comes on. This happens even after an oil change. I'm thinking that the bearings have a lot of wear on them but the engine only has 134,000 miles on it. So I was thinking maybe the oil pump has some problems.
Oil pumps do not create pressure. Main bearings do. Pumps create CFM which is a completely different force. They either work or they do not. The CFM will not change regardless of the PSI in the bearings.
@@GeorgeHamberhill did you ever figure this out? I have the same issue
@@charlieshell5231 I have not changed anything yet. I may try using 20w50 for the summer.
Can another way of priming the oil pump just be removing the fuel pump relay and spinning the motor via the starter?
Some people do that, but what I don’t like about it is the engine is still turning over during the priming process. The way I demonstrate primes the system without turning the engine over
I have a 1997 with the 2.5. It’s fine at idle cold. After driving and it warms up when I pull up to a red light and idle the oil pressure drops to 0. Is this likely my oil pump or should I check something else first? Thanks in advance.
It has like 180k miles
I have the same prob with a 2001 cherokee 4L. Best try an oil pressure sending unit replace. If you still have probs, try a new oil pump. If that doesn’t help much, it’s time for an engine rebuild.
definitely oil pump replace immediately.
How common is an oil pump failure on a YJ? At what rough mile range should one reasonably start to expect one?
Tim Dietz 150k seems to be the magic number that oil pump starts to weaken and they oil starve. I started hearing mine around right hand turns.
At around how many miles do the pumps need to be replaced?
Follow up, I decided to try 15w-40. I removed it about 150 miles later, that oil was just way to thick. Then I started having oil pressure issues at idle. Went ahead and replaced the oil pump, good as new. 110k miles new to me Jeep.
What kind of problems can you run into if you just press in the screen without using that gasket maker, or not getting the screen welded on the pump? Would it make your engine noisy?
If you get a good fit, it should be fine.
I installed a new inline-6 I got from Powertrain but for some weird reason my oil pump is not priming oil out of the pushrods. The instructions say to leave the oil filter gapped 1/8 of an inch and when oil comes out to close the oil filter but once again it's building up too much pressure and my drill will not turn with the oil filter closed so no oil is coming up through my pushrods. Ideas?
Do you ever get rattling in your 4.0 when it idles? My 93 YJ has me worried...
Humm... when sitting and idling, nope. Maybe take stethoscope and try to 0 in on it.
@@JeepSolid why don't you do a video on adjusting the valves on an old motor
Ace Birddog rocks on skid plate did this once.
Ace Birddog ?
Instead of removing the distributor to prime the pump, couldn't you just remove the fuel pump relay and spin the engine over? Should still turn the pump
Yes, but that would be turning the engine without oil. Probably not a huge deal, but this gets oil there quicker without turning the engine over while its dry.
@@JeepSolid Good point. It would still be better than nothing.
stealing your daughter's make up for painting key points? if you stole her mother's make up would you not be alive to make these videos?
