    Wow, unbelievably well said. I have discussions about precisely everything you said and it's refreshing to hear someone speak on this subject of whats going on in the processing. Some of us love the realism and detail of footage thats not overprocessed. The only way to achieve this is by giving us the ability to back off the processing and fine tune ourselves if needed. Cameras today are geared towards viewing on small devices. Personally I enjoy viewing on a large 4k monitor so a more natural, minimally processed image appears more true to life. Most of these cameras have the sharpness cranked up so high which would require more denoise to counter the negative effects and to me, outputs footage that looks far too digital...too digital to feel like you could immerse yourself in the image. My big phantom 3 allowd these settings but my more recent purchases of "mini" drones do not have the option and I am never satisfied with the footage. Your video has encouraged me to buy the mini 3 pro today and not settle for less. I'm one of those that would choose image quality over any bells n whistles or flying characteristics

    Funny thing actually is, lots of the noise is caused by the heavy sharpening.
    Dialing both sharpness and nr down to -2 leads to cleaner image with no more oversharpening but also way more shadow detail, tonality and texture.
    At ISO 1600 I still get a great image with these settings.
    In terms of NR, Davinci Resolve Temporal Noise reduction is many times better.

    • @DennisSchmitz
      @DennisSchmitz 2 года назад +1

      In conclusion, yes the update heavily improved the video quality on this drone.
      The oversharpening was especially painful when delivering in HDR PQ1000 nits, now the image looks like from a much more professional camera.
      Also I can now push shadows way more in post where there was only mush before and low light is many times better now, too. I never went above ISO400 before, now I can easily use ISO1600 with some light temporal NR in Resolve and ISO3200 with heavier temporal NR. :)
      Super impressed with the update!

      @JonathanPalfrey  2 года назад +5

      It’s so annoying manufacturers are so insistent on adding sharpening and NR even when it’s not needed!
      Great to hear it looks great in low light.

    • @DennisSchmitz
      @DennisSchmitz 2 года назад +2

      @@JonathanPalfrey I really don't get this behaviour either. The image just looked thin and digital before.
      It's also quite insane how badly the internal NR affected tonality before. Now at -2/-2 I also get much better color separation!

    I think so, the mini 3 Pro has improved a lot with the latest update. I personally prefer a sharper image when it comes to distant and less sharp landscapes, with motion blur in shots closer to objects. Good analysis. Greetings 👋

  • @geodrone7643
    @geodrone7643 10 месяцев назад +1

    Try Sharpness +1 and NR -2....will give a crisp image that can be 5% blurred in post, to escape from Moire effect...also details will be superior, NR will not kill it because you can use Topaz or Neat in post that are far superior.
    Also is giving the ability to set the softness, as you can make it softer in post, but you cannot make it sharper without having heavy aliasing and degradations.

      Why go to all that trouble in post when you can get most of the result right in first place from camera -2 sharpening -2 NR is best adding sharpening back is a lot easier and quicker in post

    Really helpful - so far I've had my settings at zero across the board. But crucially, do you then add back any sharpening in post, and if so, how much? Would also love to see some examples of noise reduction setting variations at different ISOs. Thanks again.

      I’ll add a little if I feel like it needs it. I’d say that needs to be more by eye rather than an exact number as it will depend on the scene.

    A problem I've had shooting into the sun with the Mini 3 is really bad lens flare with green discs showing in the footage.
    Wish I knew how to stop these green circles appearing.

    So how might one reduce the digital sharpness that this has recorded in post? Gausian blur?

    • @JonathanPalfrey
      @JonathanPalfrey  Месяц назад

      It’s tough to remove sharpness hence best to start with a softer image. That would be the best option if you did need to soften an image.

      @@JonathanPalfrey the Mini 3 DNGs have some pretty heavy baked-in processing though. Haven't checked yet to see if these settings affect the raw files but I hope so, they've got way too much NR by default.

    How about photos? I'm seeing all these great looking, sharp images from other people, and I've been trying all the options, single shot, 48 MP, AEB, it all looks muddy. Obviously shot in raw and edited afterwards. Not sure what to do.

  • @CalTek

    Thanks for the tips. I just adjusted both my video and photo settings to -2 and -1. I do AEB (5-shot) for my photos and am curious if these changes in the settings will help.
    I do find that when zoom 100% some details do look cartoonlike (or "mush") so hopefully the adjustments of the default settings will help.

    M2pro and mini3pro are similar price range in my country. Which would you recommend for untimate quality and versatility? I wound't mind a bigger drone thou I am aware I wont be able to fly in some places. What i really like about M2pro is it's HQ mode that gives you kind of another fov / perspective.. than MANY other drones doesnt have.

    • @JonathanPalfrey
      @JonathanPalfrey  2 года назад +1

      It’s a tough one and I will be doing a video about it once I’ve decided myself.
      M2P HQ is very handy, so is d-log and most importantly aperture control which I do find really frustrating not having on the mini 3.
      That said the small size of the mini is amazing, and the fact you can charge it off usb c which is nice when travelling.
      If you’re not worried about size and weight Id personal stretch a bit and go for the new mavic 3 classic. It’s better in every way and not that much more money. It will also hold its value far better into the future.

       @Jonathan Palfrey thanks! it all comes down to a price in my country I actually have Mavic Air Original, want to swap it for something more serious ;) M2p used (preferably combo pack) or M3m Pro are my top choices for now. Air2s - after watching many reviews .. nope. I would better go with M2 pro instead of air2s. Mini 3 pro on the other hand i looking as good as M2Pro footage! (after updates! flat + D-cinelike) - this is just crazy.
