My Drone Cinematography MasterClass is FINISHED!
Hey Flying Camera Crew! Welcome to another playful beginner drone tutorial for more cinematic drone footage. The whole gist here is drone beginners are spending a disproportionate amount of time on drone nd filters and drone settings: a huge distraction from creativity & practicing cinematography, which are the only true path to cinematic drone footage.

I'm confused, Ted. As a beginner, I'm really gravitating towards your instructional videos compared to the other many channels, because I like your focus more on the artistic approach, rather than obsessing over the settings.
BUUUUUT...in this video, you favored the ND64 filter as your go-to during mid-day flight....but 6 months ago, during one of your videos, you were all about the ND32.
So what changed your mind between then and now?
This was so informative Ted. Trying to learn drone cinematography on most YT channels has led to so much procrastination that creativeness gets suffocated. Always appreciate how you try to emphasise on cinematography/creativity to enable newbies like me to actually go out and film. Bravo, Sir 👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you Paul! I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Yup it’s easy to get overly distracted by the hundreds of settings & accessories available in our hobby. It’s a pretty complicated hobby compared to a hobby like…..water color painting. Much less distractions/options.
Well said, Ted! I am sick of all those settings & filters videos, made by the majority of Droning(on) RUclipsrs; yours is a much more practical and pragmatic approach. Thanks! Ian :-)
Ian I appreciate you watching and supporting. Yup those filter & settings episodes get all the clicks. When I create an episode about “learning cinematography”……crickets. Ahhh well.
I’m an engineer and don’t have a movie making background. For people like me it’s so easy to get hung up on technical details and optics. Thanks for teaching the rest of the creative process. It’s been eye opening and I’m looking forward to more from you.
Michael thank you for letting me know my playful little tutorials are helpful. Yup when i was a beginner i totally got caught up in settings and specs and accessories. Now i ignore specs and accessories, I put exposure on auto and now focus 100% on creativity.
I’ve followed these concepts and they are spot on for the dynamics of drone cinematography. You have absolutely nailed it Ted. Thanks for your inspiration 🙏🙏
Thanks again for the great advice. I've been flying my camera for 5 years, I started out feeling creative but then kind of hit a wall. Watching your videos is definately helping me clear my head.
Thank you for this Ted. I've always naturally used auto settings for the reasons you describe. As you move the drone, the lighting changes, and the drone does a better job of adapting those settings than I can. Loved this video!
Marcus I appreciate it my friend. Enjoy your new M4P.
You are right, Ted. Many people go into technical issues forgetting creativity. Love watching your videos
Pavel i really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment my friend.
Yours is my favorite Drone Channel! Having your focus being the act of creation rather than emersion in technical minutiae makes perfect sense to me (now). Considering your drone to be a "Tripod in the sky," is a great way to look at the craft of aerial imagery and I try to remember to practice that way. Lastly, and mostly, I applaud your enthusiasm. Great Spirit, man!
Thanks for sharing your passion and experience, Ted. Truly appreciated.
So true Ted! Always helpful and no BS! 👍👍
Another great video. Thx for keeping the inspiration coming.
Thank you, brother. As a recovering engineer and professional boring land camera photographer, I have a natural affinity towards complex settings. As a drone newbie who is still spending a lot of bandwidth thinking about keeping it in the air and avoiding obstacles, your minimalist approach to settings is attractive!! I've don't my first few practice sessions in full auto and agree that the algorithm ( Mini4Pro) is fluid and accurate! Just subscribed and look forward to catching up with your non-conventional wisdom.
Good video Ted, very interesting. Totally agree, especially on the filters & settings 👍
This is an incredible class! Thank you so much.
Top Job !! Great videos Thanks Ted..
Inspiring advice - thanks for your time and effort!
THANK YOU TED! Your masterclasses are just amazing, without icing the cake with "BUY MY LUTS" lol! Great!!!
Loving your vids, buddy! Great way to starting the week! Keep it up and keep 'em coming!
Great stuff Ted!!!!
Thank you!!!
thank you Jim. Much appreciated
Love your work, Ted. An inspiration
Dominic! that is amazing. Truly thank you for supporting the channel my friend. Welcome aboard.
Fantastic video Ted, with some absolute gems! I particularly love the idea of thinking of myself as a landscape videographer. Its so odd, but as a landscape photograpger who started making videos, it has never occurred to me before to think of myself as a landscape videographer, yet that's such a perfect fit! And I think you're spot on that thinking of myself that way, and as a Storyteller too, will make a big shift in my work.
I'm still fairly new to drone filming, but I immediately was more interested in learning what looked good and trying to practice aerial cinematography than the technical aspects. I spent one day letting my partner fly it, because I thought he'd do a better job than me (because hes a pilot 🤣) and as I watched him zooming it all over the place I realised that not only did the way he flew it cause me anxiety, but more importantly he would likely never film shots the way I'd like, because to him it was about flying, whereas to me it was about filming. We both decided he wouldnt fly it again 😄
Yes, a new video. 😍
Landscape videographer, I like that. That defines what I want to be
Loved this video. By following you and watching you previous videos, you have helped me to improve my drone flying. I still have a long way to go. Having the Mavic 3, I can select f/11. As long as I am on a bright day, I'll set for f/11, and leave everything else in auto, No Nd filters. It works fantastic and allows me to concentrate on flying. Thank You!
You convinced me, and I want to try it, thanks!
Thank you for another excellent episode, Ted 👍
Really enjoyed the video. One of my sayings is, battery anxiety kills creativity. I have no problem using a battery to find the shot then swapping and using another to get the shot. Taking your time is crucial and you touched on that wonderfully. Thanks for that.
I have learned the same thing as you recently. After about 75 flights..........
I was worried about my 4k settings.
When I'd come home and plug my SD card into my "smart tv" ...... I was ruined. Most of my footage was stuttering and choppy and some static.
Guess what......? My TV is not 4k. Sonofabitch!!!
So I've been taking vids in1080p. Until I realized my pc was what I should have been looking at my vids on.
Flying the location and seeing its layout on the 1st battery is ok. Then swap it out. No sense in getting the shot lined upto rush the shot. It wastes our time
You are a phenomenal YT writer. Your words (energy) flow through the observers, attracting like. Capturing the perfect composition is also a personal choice based on the observer. personally, enjoy your content. Thank you ❤
Spot on!
no further comment! You are still my hero, protecting the drone-world against the ND-filter Mafia 😎
And dont forget about the 60Hz mafia!! 😎
thanks for another awesome tutorial 🤗
Excellent Ted. Your combination of enthusiasm and attention to detail where it matters is quite infectious. Thanks for your hard work and keep it coming.
Some solid points - but that said I found newer DJI drones tend to overexpose at on ev=0 and why use a polarized Freewell filter on your mini 3 pro - the polarizing effect changes with angle to the sun ☀️
Wow. Love this video. Want to save it an review it. Believe I suffer from paralysis by over analysis when it comes to watching and rewatching RUclipsrs focusing on the perfect manual settings plus the right filter plus the right drone moves. It makes it overwhelming. I appreciate you re-focusing on what is most important to keep in mind as a amateur at this hobby. Thanks. Look forward to more!
Fantastic Ted. Deep and insightful.
Charlie I really appreciate it my friend.
Another nice video 👏👏👏👏
Just love you’re videos. You’re so right. Whenever I attempt to make a cinematic video I just go out and get content and think about composition, interesting smooth actions. It’s only for my own family and friends and really enjoy it. Problem with the uk is the weather is terrible😂
brilliant episode and THE most useful series to us amateurs
Ted, you are so right👍👌👊I know, but sometimes it’s fun to experiment with some filters. In auto great results can be achieved and a profile like D-log (M) is usefull if you want to colorgrade. The exposure lock is a good way to prevent exposure changes. To get some motion blur and protect te lens I mostly use ND16, 32 or NDPL. In most scenario’s that just fine. Greetings from 🇳🇱
Thanks for sharing sir😊
All good info as usual there buddy, keep it up. 😀
Great insight, just keep it simple Ted..
Dude, I love your narrative, especially your passion for your art.
The world needs more Ted, You are some serious sunshine, brother.
Ted sir you really are top man , your videos are so detailed. I always use your advice and I will be on this 😊
Thankyou Ted. I was just thinking about this today while reviewing my early footage, all shot in auto with no ND, while simply learning to fly the drone. Comparing that to recent footage where I'm trying to improve my pro settings. The earlier stuff looks better.
After watching this tutorial, I'll be going back to auto.
hey Richard! yup that’s what worked for me. I encourage people to try it and see if it works for them. Spend that flight time now focusing on creativity and the fundamentals of cinematography. Hey I’m finishing a new episode now on the most important rule of composition for flying cameras (my opinion). Thanks for sharing Richard! Welcome aboard sir.
Thank you for this. I was having trouble figuring out how what I was doing wrong with my flying. This video renewed my passion by helping me change my perspective. Gave me a push to get over my slump.
yesssssssss! There is no bigger compliment possible for a teacher to hear than they “renewed the passion” for someone. Thank you.
Nice one Ted, my drone videos have got worse over the last couple of months, mainly because I'm arsing about in manual, constantly swapping nd filters and generally lollygagging around changing from this setting to that setting, in fact I haven't flown for a couple of weeks as I've lost my creative mojo. I'm not concentrating on the importance of subject, light, composition, positioning, it's so obvious now having watched your video, especially as my gimble videos have got better. I just put my I phone on cinematic setting or slow motion and away I go letting the iPhone take care of all the exposure settings. I'm truly fully concentrating on the shot and the subject and my next move and where I'm going with the shot, thanks Ted, your a great inspiration.
Philip what you said is EXACTLY what I went through a few years ago. That’s when I realized all these youtube drone “experts” are all just copying each others episodes. I did my own testing on all the settings and found what really worked: let the algorithm handle the technical real-time adjustments so now i can focus on the creativity.
Definitely fun again. Thanks for watching Philip and taking the time to leave a kind supportive comment.
Hi Ted, been watching your channel here in the UK for a while now and i just love your simplistic aproach on this and the way you concentrate more on the creative side rather than getting bogged down with all those confusing settings and just waisting your valuable flying time.
I was getting lost in a see of videos regarding ND filters and so confused as to what ones I should buy and use for for any given situation or weather conditions, that was untill I watched this one, I am now going order just the nd64 for video and an nd1000 for long exposure photos 👌
Keep up the good work my friend and thanks for keeping it reel 👊
Andy you wrote an incredible note here. I’m SUPER grateful you found value in my playful tutorials. When i was a beginner i listened to all the RUclips drone experts and ended up wasting time on all the wrong things. So i did a bunch of testing and found what worked for me. This channel is me sharing what worked for me. And I’m still learning and testing and sharing. It never ends. Thankfully!
Welcome aboard Andy.
I love your videos and simplicity! When you slow your footage like the boat video, are you still using 24 fps or you change it to 60fps?
Thank you Ted for clarifying this. Before I watched your video I went out and was somewhat frustrated of what ND filter to use, what manual settings to use etc. I do a lot of mountain summer and winter hiking with my DJI Drone. Now I can concentrate on my subjects to create a more cinematic look.
Awesome video and well explained! Keep it up!
Great video thank you Ted. You are 100% right. I follow your footsteps and I have improved a lot. Tell me something please. Does the same approach apply to Mavic 3 also? The one with the micro 4/3 sensor and the variable aperture.
Another great and useful episode Ted! A couple of comments / observations... Primarily, and this was just kind of lucky for me... I just happened upon your channel right at the time I was getting ready to buy my Mini 3, and between your content and engaging presentation style, I ended up viewing most of your content before actually doing any real shooting... What this did, believe it or not, was to help me NOT get mired down in the "Myopathy of the settings and filters" bit and it helped me to avaoid the frustration and discouragement that would have surely resulted from my out of control ADHD, so that I could focus on exploring from a very different angle and sharing what I find. The few project I have been able to make time for this summer, were way beyond even my wildest hope, and I really believe that it was becasue of your emphasis on minimizing anything that does not directly relate to composition and visual storytelling. That emphasis, is probably your biggest strength. On the topic of the ND filters though... While I agree that most daytime shots can be done just fine with an ND64 in auto-exposure, I am in California's Central Valley / Delta area, and the lighting here tends to be very harsh, so my suggestion is that while most chots can be done with ND64 or no filter, there are 2 others that can actually come in handy... an ND128 can make a huge difference on really bright days when there is a lot of reflective moisture in the air, and, believe it or not, an unshaded polarizing filter not only can tighten up some of our gorgeous Delta sunsets, but also can provide just a bit of added protection for the camera lens. Thank you for your helpful insights. I like many others actually look forward to new content drops on your channel. The gift of your experiences is truly well-received.
Hello Ted, nice sharing 😎🤝
Hi Ted
I mostly use auto while filming and manual for photo.
When I had the Mini1 on sunny days my filter was the ND32. On cloudier days I try the ND16 or even ND8 before taking off and use the entire session.
Now with the Mini3 Pro I start with the ND64 or ND64PL depending where I am flying.
I tend to have my videos a little under exposed and correct on post.
I will give you a real testimony... been following your ideas for months to not stressful on ND filter, Manual Setting, Color Grading and any expert action...i just now concentrate in how to fly and compose and post in IG/YT...though only for fun with not many follower...there are now and then people sending DM deliver questions "what setting do you use in your drone?? What luts donyou use?...etc". These give me validation to trust auto, then learn manual by time if needed as i just fly for fun not commercial 😊...concentrate more in composition and keep fingers steady
Another great video Ted. Thanks bro. Like # 60!!!
Imagine my good fortune in having discovered (thanks to the YT search for dji pro4) Ted Nemeth's channel. I am an absolute beginner to droneology. Utterly so. I do however have a fundamental grasp of light and old school camera settings. What Ted is telling us just halfway through this presentation is that (since drone and camera software has become so sophisticated) we as operators need leave the exposure questions to the drone itself and instead concentrate on flying, framing (composition?) and available light... talk about timing! for a new drone operator. I am delighted at these prospects. Thank you, Ted. Sub'd.
Okay... okay. "Flying camera operator"? or... Landscape Videographer. I do believe I'm getting ahead of myself. Cheers.
what a great message! thank you. congrats on your new camera. And welcome aboard! I’m super curious about the name of your channel….Do you live on a ranch?
@@TedNemeth Short answer, no. LONG answer is that I can and do recreate within the vast western Mojave Desert for it's singular beauty. I am almost finished with the conversion of a small trailer to a camper so that I may spend more time in the Mojave before the hours-long drive home again. This is why I would like a flying camera to use in an effort to capture some of the landscape that motivates me to be out there; it's mountains, canyons, flats and it's incredible views of the distance... Additionally, I loosely maintain a remuda of vintage Coleman 'big hat' lanterns which serve both as tools for camp and work light and to admire, for the industrial art that they are. Then, in another life I would raise horses. It is a combination of these effects upon my psyche and my interests along with the deliberate poking of fun at myself that brought about the username Apples' Big Hat Ranch. No one has asked that question before but here's the answer! Thanks, Ted, for all that you do.
When Ted speaks, drone pilots listen. 👍🏽
thank buddy.
I am now!!!!! (well said)
Some more great advice
Great video as expected Ted, i'm a huge fan of your work. Quick question, how do you set up your amazing slow motion shots, on a sunny day? The 24 frame rate would be too low (wouldn't it) , do you just keep the ND64 and double your frame rate ?
You are 100 percent correct. Its very refreshing to hear the truth about videography.
Eric thank you brother. Oh man I miss the Santa Monica! Will move back at some point.
Great video!! I've been so preoccupied with buying new nd filters and learning to use them, i totally missed the beauty in light angles and what can create from my own visions. Most excellent work my friend!!!
Thanks Ted, love your videos. Actually look forward to them. Keep up the good work! God bless you brother!
Shawn thank you for letting me know you find value in my playful little tutorials. I try to make them…..unique & interesting. I’m not always sure it lands. But the only way to know is try. Hey I loved your bridge episode.
@@TedNemeth You inspired me to make that one. Thank you.
Your enthusiasm is awesome. Subscribed
Awesome Video, as always. Reminds us civilised human beeings on the core fundamentals. 👍
Keep going Ted
Ted, so looking forward to your list of channels to learn cinematography from. Also looking forward to more videos on the subject from you
Thanks Ted! Another compelling, educational and fun video from you. Always thought-provoking and invariably positive, well done and thanks again.
Ben wow thank you for the kind words my friend. the power of optimism!
SO much in this vid...I had to watch it twice....you're spot on....I remember one of my first recorded flights I got some awesome footage and was just feeling the scene...after that-spending so much time trying to learn all of the cam settings to have so much effort just hindering my own capabilities....I had been starting to think I was just really bad at this....but your advice and explanations are just so on point....maybe there's hope for us plebs yet ! Thanks Ted!
i had the EXACT experience as a beginner. Man I am so glad to hear this episode resonated with you. That means everything. Thank you for watching and taking the time to let me know. Welcome aboard sir!
Very deep and thought-provoking, Ted.
hey Jeff. Appreciate it brother.
Cool!
thanks good sir
Hands down the most for real and informational video out there Ballsy
man i truly appreciate it. It’s gotten 7k views and only 1 troll. I was expecting much more. I’m just sharing what worked for me and encouraging people to test it for themselves. Live Fast.Pet Dogs.
Food for thought as always .The one nd filter for bright sunshine is intriguing,up to now I couldn't shoot in bright sunshine at all because my phone mounted to the rc-n1 was'nt bright enough but now I have the RC on the way with a brighter screen I might give it a go ..If we get sunshine again here in Wales that is lol
Love it. I’ve been flying since 2015 and just this year learned Premier Pro and how to use LUT, wish I had seen this earlier. So are you using and slog or just straight colorized video? Do you ever change up the mood in post? Thanks (new subscriber)
Most excellent!
i am most grateful. Glad you enjoy my goofy little tutorials.
Well said my friend just love your videos so educational 😁👌👍 🇬🇧
Beautifully done Ted. Absolutley bang on the money.
Mike ah man I’m super glad to hear you liked the episode. I was a bit nervous talking about all this “non-drone” stuff. Wasn’t sure if it would resonate with people. So to hear your feedback is really great. Thank you.
Ted, This was a great video. My drone flying has not been great for the exact analogy you used with the water. And you’re right about the writing! You have improved greatly.
You’ve inspired me yet again!
Klaus I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Thanks for letting me know I inspired you. That is literally THE biggest compliment a creative can receive.
Ted, love your videos and approach. I am learning and relearning from you. Keep it up.
hey Frank. thank you my friend. I really appreciate it. Let’s have a great 2024
Life is too short for such lenthy wordy videos
I love all this
thank you! welcome aboard my flying filmmaker friend. Is there a specific topic you would like me to cover in an upcoming episode?
Thank you. Your approach absolutely alines with my instincts. This is an art form!
right on. yup the dynamics of a flying camera are much different than a mirrorless/DSLR.
You are so right! I had a flyaway and lost an ND filter. I was going to order a replacement for it but you convinced me not to. Had I use your approach in the first place that would not have happened! Just like people think an expensive camera guarantees good pictures or footage. It's always how you use whatever camera you have and what you are pointing it to that makes all difference. Subscribing!
thanks buddy. welcome aboard to our FLYING CAMERA CREW! We have fun here.
Tried these tips and you are completely right. I’ve had some of the best footage this way…. 🤙 thanks Ted
great to hear! Yup these DJI cameras are incredibly capable. They only thing they actually need is creativity.
Great video Ted. Love the “best travel disguise” link :)
Another Masterclass Ted, well done, really love your approach to Filmmaking....and the flying camera 🙂👍
Brilliantly explained, still a newbie, less than 6 months with a drone, and YES I watched the RUclips ‘experts’ and bought a (cheap) set of ND filters. Don’t need filters in South Wales anyway because it’s always raining 😂😂
Excellent points! Ted is underrated.
ahh man thank you my flying filmmaker friend. Is there a specific topic(s) you would like me to cover in an upcoming episode?
Great video Ted; minimalist 👍; I always use auto settings for footage, but have two filters, a UV, which has been on my M3Pro for months, agree with the ND64, which I use if capturing video only, however, I rarely use it as I like to take photos as well and a shutter speed of 1/50 results in motion blurred photos, as the “flying camera” is not on a tripod.
I use maps, street view, sun positions and such like before I arrive at a location and can then concentrate on the aspects you suggest, not on filters and settings.
Keep up the good work 👌
I like what you said, it makes sense. Do you have the test footage to show the results?
Just got my DJI Mini 3 for my business, which I am in LOVE with!. Your videos are awesome and I cannot wait to stick along your journey and continue to learn more from you. Thank you!
Roman that’s super exciting. Welcome to our crew of flying camera junkies. What is your new business?!?
Very inspiring! I bought my mini 3 pro at the prerelease, flown it 5 times and put it back in the box... until now! Look forward to getting back out there!!
THAT….is the best compliment I could possibly get. I bow to your good graces. Yup this hobby can get CRAZY complicated…if you let it. Simplify everything until you’re left with just your creativity & fun.
Cheers much great tutorial I've been subliminally practicing this with my phone's camera for a while now 😊❤
yes! that’s what its about. Aquire more skills….not more camera gear.
Great insight! I like to say, "Don't get wrapped around the axle!" You have earned a new subscriber for sure!
I'm getting strong Robin Wong vibes from your enthusiasm. Love it!
that takes me back to when I was a boy and my dad was teaching me how to get great photos paying attention to the artistic aspects, framing and lighting on 35mm stills camera shots,. Great video and sound advice. I haven't got a drone as yet, but I have to say this is really inspiring me to do so to practice a new art form as well as the enjoyment of flying. Thank you .
Simon thank you for sharing! I too bonded with my dad over cameras. I remember when i was about 7 years old (1979) when my mom would leave for work on saturday i would help my dad turn the bathroom into a darkroom so we could develop his photos.
Simon I’m excited for you to join our FLYING CAMERA CLUB
You speak beautifully - the content, the flow, your fabulous sense of humor, and all. I think we all have to go through a first stage of just flying, filming it all, and learning not to crash. To me, drone filming versus filming on the land is more like underwater deep diving versus just swimming, where we must master the additional, terribly disorienting dimensions and elements. You are mastering this sphere fast, and we benefit from your sharing your progress with us.
beautiful metaphor! love it.
You are always so motivational...thanks for that! Do you have anything coming up for shooting some good fall foliage videos? I know it's probably late in the game for that.
Great video, I could relate to so much of it, helpful for me as by nature I like technical stuff and I want to work on my creative side and chill out with the OCD irrational energy!
hey Danny. Thanks for watching my friend. I went through the same voyage of loving the gear & technical aspect. But eventually realized I hit a point where the only way footage could improve now is from better skills/composition/lighting/whiskey. etc.
