    You make some very good points - great video. At first I didn't agree on the "inconvenience factor", but its true - most of the time I just want to flip-ON the Osmo and start shooting immediately. But still there are shooting scenarios where I have time to set-up and get the right ND mounted, to get that perfect exposure I'm looking for. I have used it handheld while riding a bike, and shooting at 1/60 for 30 FPS makes the motion-blur beautiful. But - then the ND got stuck when I shut it off, just like in your video.

    • @danvirchow

      There are certainly pros and cons to using them, but I feel that for the intended use of something like this camera, most people are just fine not using filters. Thank you for watching!

    Love the honesty! The easiest way to know if you need ND filters is super simple. If you use auto mode 100% of the time you don't need ND filters. If you use Manual on the pocket you will need ND filters to get optimal results.

If you are doing paid work.. buy a proper camera and then you can b uy filters for that proper camera!! Nobody really needs 180degree shutter rule/motion blur for such a great vlog camera... Great job Dan. Cheers.

    I have Skyreat filters set of ND8, 16, 32, 64. They are also CPL. The sky looks great with CPL on. Tried all of them ended up with ND 16 on Pocket 3 during Christmas trip in Disneyland. Why ND16? Because it's just enough for outside to not make shutter speed way too high and I didn't take it off when walked in coffee shop. This filter along with ISO 3200 max worked just fine. The background separation is more pronounced, clouds on the sky are not washed out. The things I didn't like are in my opinion it decreased details and CPL ring is hard to turn without interaction with gimbal, which will shut down when you apply some force during filter Ring rotation. Filter is thin, hard to take off camera, dropped it couple of times. It didn't break though. I'm going to return it and try something better. Did you try Freewell filters?

    Great breakdown. I've had the Pocket 3 for about a month now, and I absolutely love this camera. As you mentioned, the convenience of being able to point and shoot vs the setup with the a7siii was how it's supposed to be for vlogs. I was only able to get the base camera (not the creator combo) before my flight back to Vietnam, and I was worried about not having the ND filters with all of the outdoor filming that I'm doing for the channel. The moral of the story, everything looked crisp and I'm happy with the footage. For the untrained eye, watching RUclips videos on their phone, it's not a big deal... (BTW what mic are you using for your A-roll here?)

    Getting P3 next week. I looked at the black mist filters and found the K&F filter. According to their description it wll let the lens close without hitting the gimbal. I will find out next week. As far as ND filters I fell into that rtrap on the Action 1, action 2 and the pocket 2 and never use them. Wasted a ton of money on them. The most I may do on this one is buy the VND's but that will be it.

      You won't get the proper effectiveness of a filter unless you use manual settings. This mostly involves shutter speed. 1/50 SS for 24 FPS, 1/60 for 30 FPS, 1/120 for 60 FPS, 1/240 for 120 FPS.

    I’m with you on this. I have ND filters for my Sony cameras, but the point of the Pocket 3 for me is convenience. Turn it on and start shooting. I bought the K&F var ND filters and the are so hard to see the writing on them and the little tick mark. It makes it hard to set. I’ll probably hardly ever use the filters.

    I got the skyreat nd/cpl filters. Not because I need the nd so much, but the cpl is very important when recording cars. They can completely change how the car appears, not just window reflections, but how light reflects off paint. I also like their use when shooting glassy water. I'm sure you probably know what I'm talking about.

    • @danvirchow
      @danvirchow  Год назад +1

    • @tidatida4145
      @tidatida4145 10 месяцев назад +2

      Would be interested in how much one gains on dynamic range with CPL. Technically I assume that you don't get it correct when you talk about stops. The sky is much more blue and most of the reflections go away, there is just less area in the image where you could get in trouble by burning out the highlights.

    • @danvirchow
      @danvirchow  10 месяцев назад

      @@tidatida4145 I haven't tried a CPL with the P3 yet. Let me know if you get a chance to and how it goes!

    • @TheInvisibleRedneck
      @TheInvisibleRedneck 10 месяцев назад

      @@tidatida4145 I'm not sure how much you gain in DR. I believe the ND helps in reduction of light and can increase the natural motion blur appearance. The Polarizer is mostly used for how the reflections look on the car, it can really changed the appearance overall. There is little worry about the sky or how distant objects appear (they usually aren't changed dramatically or blown out to unusable levels)
      The biggest lesson I've learned with the OP3 isn't related to the CPL or ND. Always be sure to lock the AWB. The OP3 makes dramatic color changes when the AWB isnt locked. Everything else functions like any camera would, but the auto white balance is a bit extreme in it's changes.

      Fewer reflections on glass more transparency, water, car etc. surfaces. Blue sky, less mist and you can choose the intensity by screwing - CPL is a no-brainer. I'm a big fan of polarized sunglasses, the world looks just nicer and eases the eyes. Automatically you gain more dynamic range.

      Unless you desire having motion blur, I wouldn't say that ND filters are necessary. A mist filter could add a fun blooming effect if you'd like to give your footage a little pizazz. A CPL would be useful if you deal with a lot of reflections and water. Personally, I'd only get a mist filter for what I use the P3 for.

As much as I like it it's finicky enough to precisely slide it back into the case so the gimbal head doesn't get jostled. My iPhone still wins as far as quick, one-handed operation with no snagging, cases or smudge-magnet little filters. You basically need three hands to handle the camera, filter and case at the same time.

    wow... exactly my mindset. the complexity, the decision process... and while i understand the motion blur aspect, well maybe I am so used to Action cam video on YT... but i dont really care about the blur. I think people put way too much into trying to figure out filters, and DLOG and LUTS... and then mess up the shot that they wouldve gotten if they just used auto and no filters

    I love the look you have on your pocket videos. What are your settings? Do you adjust the sharpness & noise? It’s super nice & film look! Can you make one on D Log Vs non D log? Would love to see your results since you get the film look. Thank you for this great detailed video.

    Dude let some of that room tone back in on your mic and bring back the compression. Your dialog is so dry sounding and compressed that it will make viewers focus on the wrong thing because it almost feels overdubbed instead of a real human talking to them. Also thanks for the video, I was wondering about these filters.

      @@danvirchowHey man,Great video! First things first. I saw the title of your video and drew my attention right away because I recently but the Osmo Pocket 3, and I’ve been contemplating getting the Freewell super big pack… I forgot how it’s called. Part 2 of the first things first… I was like daaaamn he has a Papa Emeritus III picture, ok I’m staying this dude is cool! I’m a huge Ghost fan myself. Regarding the comment about the sound… Maaaan… I’ve seen so many videos and people with millions of views that haven’t even invested on a $25 microphone for their phone. I did notice myself some strong “ssss” sounds and boomy low end which only you know what your settings are, buuuut are they determining factors to deter someone to watching your content considering it’s still properly recorded? No I don’t think so. I just think it’s an area of opportunity. Also regarding how for some reason the ND filter got stuck when you turned off the camera. I recall seeing some other videos where the Osmo pocket is supposed to sense the filter and not hide the lens so that you can take it off and not put any stress on the motors. I wonder if it could be something with this specific brand. Anyways cheers man!

      Well, that's the point I was making within the video. If you want motion blur, yes, you need them. However, a majority of people who are just looking for a high quality camera to capture their life will not need them, nor will they care that they don't have them. All a matter of use case!
