Can you make a video on how to change the Photos Settings to be not as bright ? My images are coming at horrible for my DJi Mini 3 (not pro) and it's disappointing. My video mode is beautiful and not bright but the photo mode is overexposed like CRAZY.
You really should update your video title because its very misleading and I ended up wasting a ton of time. You may not know this but the settings you mentioned in this video do not exist on the non pro mini 3 except for the joystick settings and I ended up wasting time trying to google why the settings are missing. The only camera setting that existed was white balance and the exposer settings which I agree on keeping set at auto. The only time I use manual mode is when taking individual photos but messing with exposer settings when shooting video is a complete waste of time unless your maybe shooting indoors.
Many thanks Ted! Again, you seem to be the only one in RUclips, who is not praising a)180°-rule b)use of ND-filters c)filming in manual mode! You are my hero! 😎
Yeah buddy! the 180 Shutter rule is very important with boring land cameras (mirrorless/DSLR) because the subject is generally much closer to the camera so motion blur is very prominent. But with a flying camera, motion blur is simply much much less noticeable, and cinematography is much more important. Just my opinion. That’s why I say AUTO exposure is essential: it keeps exposure ALWAYS correct and now allows you to focus on creativity (and stop fussing over filters all the time!). If its a super bright sunny day: put on an ND64 in AUTO exposure.
I am no expert by a long shot and this is the reason I am watching videos like this one. I enjoyed very much by the way, the information you delivered and the way that you deliver it. One thing that gave me pause....your recommendation that the ND64 was the best all around filter for clear weather daytime cinematography. Everybody else has said the ND16 is the way to go generally speaking.
Your video is about the Mini 3 not the Mini 3 Pro so you should leave out material that only applies to the Pro. The Mini 3 does not have 10-bit nor does it record D-Cinelike so that was a considerable amount of "air time" that didn't need to be in this video. It will likely confuse the dickens out of the more basic Mini 3 user. Your other material was great.
But its also good to know that you don't miss out too much when just having the mini 3 not pro. the only really big difference regarding recording modes is that the mini 3 is not having such a slow motion in 4k like the pro has.
Amazing! I have been an ND filter user and shutter speed EXACTLY at double frame rate! I am going to immediately switch to your method and see how it goes....love to simplify! Thanks, Ted!
Ohh am l glad l found this video. Finally someone that doesn't repeat what everyone else is preaching. Liked, subscribed and saved this video so l don't have to look for it when l need to watch it again. Great job, thanks 😀
Thank you! I am a newer drone enthusiast and decided to listen to another RUclipsrs advice on settings and controls. I had an amazing opportunity yesterday to film a one of a kind property and I left so frustrated. Spent the whole time playing these manual settings and didn't feel like I had good control over the drone the entire time. Amateur move. Wish I came across this video sooner
hey buddy. Welcome aboard to our FLYING CAMERA CREW. Glad to hear my advice helped. Flying is very complicated, so always simplify wherever possible. I have a new episode dropping on Sunday that outlines this. Thank you for joining brother.
hey my friend! I found it useful to exposure lock on the C2 button so it can quickly/easily be accessed. Basically the idea is there’s some scenes where you don’t want the auto exposure to change the exposure. It’s definitely a subject / creative choice. Generally speaking you always want correct exposure (hence auto exposure). But suppose…..maybe…..you’re flying and you descend down under some tree cover. It might be your creative choice to keep the exposure dark (under exposed) …to give a dark mysterious look in the scene. In that case….you could hit your AE LOCK button just as you are about to go under the trees. Then when you ascend back up you can quickly unlock the exposure and go back to proper exposure. Purely a creative choice. No right or wrong.
Great video, especially for the newbies which need more stick time than messing around with all kinds of settings, there's a lot of new drone pilots safety rules and drone rules are very very important in this day in age 2024 I been flying drones 10 years and rc airplanes 50 years, taught alot of people, most people dont read the manual they just want to fly there new toy, you - tube is a great instruction manual on anything! I think it was very good video for the new guys and gals that are just getting their feet wet in the Drone world. If you make it to complicated the drone usually ends up on Ebay, I am done.
Thanks man just got a mini 3 pro as my first drone at the ripe young age of 65 I know I don’t look it lol . I have just come across your RUclips channel and what I breath of fresh air you are ! Love your enthusiasm for your cinematography and life I am picking up soo many tips keep up the good work. I have spent most of my working life I the film business doing live action special effects and have worked on many many films with great cinematographers so now is the time in my life to see if I can do a little bit of my own and with the help from watching your posts who knows where it might take me . Lots love and stuff xx
hey Stephen. Wow you have quite a career. congrats man. And massive changes in that industry over the last 10 years bc of CGI. And congrats on your first flying camera. I’m somewhat new to it also. I’m 51 now and got my first drone a few years ago. Picked up my first video camera about the same time. Was looking for a new path in life and fell in love with holding a camera and documenting the world. Both my grandparents were quite famous filmmakers in NYC. Ted Nemeth & Mary Ellen Bute. Holding a camera, …just feels like I’m holding this powerful creative tool. Anycrap. Stephen welcome aboard sir. You’re now part of our FLYING CAMERA CREW. I look forward to seeing what you create. Let me know if there’s any topics you’d like me to cover in an upcoming episode.
So i have a dji mini 3 and the RC controller but i didn’t have this settings like MP4, MOV or the color options. Aircraft and controller have the newest Firmware-Update… Can u help me please?
Thank you very much for you advice 99% of people are talking about shutter speed, as you just mentioned I will spend more of time in control my drone that anything else,Great videos wonderful I’m happy to suscribe in you channel continue with that vibe and honesty towards the drones consumer
Great video with some good point - I shoot most of the time in auto as well, and use the same filter during bring day lights. In some cases exposure lock in needed, as you don't want the drone to shift exposure during your shot when filming like a tower, or when you are flying though something. But I agree most of the time auto exposure is sufficient. Can you really sustain a professional drone business with a Mini 3 Pro?
Well Ted, I stumbled upon your channel the other day and have subscribed. Your videos are a breath of fresh air... not trying to sell me anything, just straight up trying to help me be a better drone videographer. Too many other channels talk about the need to upgrade but you're all about the joy of learning and sharing. You're the first channel I've ever considered joining to support your efforts. Thanks Ted
Carl! ahhh man i truly appreciate the kind words. I would love for you to see this episode I’m working on now because it really is kind of a love letter to the art of creating beautiful drone footage with minimal regard for specs/settings/accessories. Creativity always supersedes technical. ANSEL ADAMS: “there’s nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy concept.”
@@TedNemeth I've been watching quite a few of your episodes and you'll be my go to channel for a while. I like the idea of using the ND 64 in auto exposure (I've been listening) and I'll be trying it out soon. That's one of the things that sets your channel apart... it's about encouragement, and simply getting out there. I'll be joining your channel, I just have to decide at what level. I don't want to just learn from you, I want to support you. Cheers from Nova Scotia
Hello from Norway ! I have been a hobby photographer for more than 50 years ( still am ) , and can't agree more ... auto settings work just great in most cases. Began my hobby with Kodak instant cameras at the age of 10, have gone the grades with 135 mm and SLR Pentax cameras ( manual and semiauto models ) . For a few years I have been a drone pilot with my DJI Mavic Air2 and Air2S, and I always use auto settings... except in photo mode, wich I sometimes adjust exposure to get the effect that I prefer ... As you say, in auto you can focus about flying ! With my videos I prefer to edit light, saturation and contrast in my software... if needed 😀! Too many youtubers fill their screen with all kinds of stuff whichI mean is absolutely bullshit ! Auto settings and clean screen is my thing !
Hi Ted. I recently received my Mini 3 Pro and have been watching a bunch of videos to help me get going. I watched two of yours so far and REALLY appreciate your straightforward and easy to understand approach to your tutorials. I tried watching another guys video on filters and he went right into shutter speed without first identifying the correlation between the two and seemed to be just trying to impress rather than actually teach. Other videos are too long and drawn out but yours seem to be just the right length to get the information across without the unnecessary filler. Really liking your videos and can't wait to watch more. I feel like I'm actually FINALLY learning valuable stuff so THANKS!
hey Brian. Many thanks for watching my flying filmmaker friend. Congrats on your new M3. I checked out your channel but no content yet. What type of shots do you like to capture? Please let me know if theres any specific questions. I’d love to help.
Your videos have really changed my thinking. I didn't realize that I was mistakenly trying to apply DSLR camera rules to drone camera rules such as manual exposure over auto.
ah man thank you sir. I’m working on an entire drone masterclass right now. it should be almost 2 hours long. It’s everything I’ve ever learned about flying cameras.
Hey Ted...totally agree with you regarding manual exposure. I was flying my Mini 3 Pro over the Manatee river about a month ago and if I was watching all the settings I would have lost my drone. Unknown at the time, the mini 3 Pro sometimes drifts over water, it has something to do with the down facing sensors. I had 16 satellites and I just wanted the drone to hover while I was checking it's location - it was in line of site, but I lost it in the sun. If I was watching all the outputs for not being on manual like you listed, I wouldn't have noticed my drone drifting NE up the manatee river. So.. automatic settings certainly played a big role in me finding the drone as it drifted away. I know I could have used RTH, but I'm the kind of guy that gets crazy if I am not controlling my drone - especially when I have line of site. Another great vid man! Love your stuff. Did you get my email re: Mexico?
In this case use the compass. But put the drone in the Center of compass and fly just right to the "H". When the distancie is 0, the drone is above you. Regards
Hi, I do like your instructions and tips for drone imaging. I'm a non professional and only hobbyist , but a comment / question on the Auto White balance . If you use a drone and possibly a GoPro or similar and want to combine these videos in a project , would it not be easier to have a fixed White Balance ? What if , during the flight , the weather changes , say from sunny to cloudy, would that not affect the white balance settings ?
hello my flying filmmaker friend! I’m not the best person to answer that question because my drone is in auto white balance 100% of the time. This allows me to focus 100% of my time & attention on creativity / cinematography. Yes technically/theoretically,…. matching the color temperature on different cameras should help when combining footage on a timeline to match a little better.
hey Jason. Some might find my workflow for photos….blasphemous, but it works great for me, and I know others that swear by it. I explain my photo setting/workflow in the episode: ruclips.net/video/_Tm8gGs1-9Q/видео.html Let me know your thoughts.
ha! yeah buddy. Welcome aboard to our little gang of flying filmmaker friends here. If you have any specific questions let me know. Have a great New Years.
Awesome!! great to hear its not just me that uses auto exposure and doesn't spend time trying to work out shutter, frame rate and exp. People, as you say get very hung up on these settings, and happy to report that by the time they are happy (not often) I've already finished my shot and now moving on. Have a cool Christmas buddy.
Love your videos Ted because you tell it as it is, I agree with everything you say about the settings and filters etc. Unlike a lot of other youTubers who are making money by promoting multiple filters when all you need is one or at most 2. 👏👏👍
hey Frank. Thanks for watching. Yeah I just report what my experiences are so if people like my results they can try it. Hey loved your latest castle video. What you working on next?!
Thanks Ted, I’m just a hobbyist and I’ve recently got a Insta 360 X3 camera and so had a go at using it in conjunction with my drone footage on that video. Unfortunately the X3 video quality doesn’t compare to the quality of the Mini 3 Pro especially in low light.
I like the idea of using an nd64 on auto, pure auto looks atrocious for me so will try that next time I fly. I prefer cinelike myself, I find all I need to do is eyedropper the white and drop a lut on top ( albeit dialled down as needed). Do you go full auto at night? I find full auto at night introduces tons of noise.
hey buddy! thank you for watching and taking the time to let me know it was of value. Can I ask why you would get that wide angle lens? Just move the drone backwards a few feet and it does the exact same thing, without having to worry about adding a filter and any fisheye effect.
@@TedNemeth Im trying to get into real estate photography and if when I shoot inside a home I would need that extra viewing space. Thats really the only instance I would need it for, I think.
Never thought of using auto exposure since I thought myself as “professional” lol silly me. I am going to try it out soon but I’m sure I’ll love it! Thanks for the tips!
Freddy. Definitely give it a try for several weeks. Spend all that time focusing entirely on cinematography & I bet your footage will noticeably improve. AND your exposure will always be correct. It really worked well for me. And assign exposure lock to the C1 button, so you can bang it if needed in a specific scene.
Hi, Ted, love your channel! Funny and great talk on your video. Thank you! I will come to the city, question! can I fly & shoot in manhattan? just want to get few shots of the city I'm still on the way to get Part 107 license, would city cop come to stop me? the batteries (3 Batteries) I have only allowed my drone up the air for 15 min. I figured one battery only live for one fly, especially in the city. Love to hear your advises. Thank you!!!
Cool tips you shared in this video. So this Cine profile dji added is actually pseudo and there is no way to film more mid tones and avoid the clipping super bright areas. Was the shot at 17:30 captured through a ND 64 filter? I wonder whether a stronger ND could rescue more of that clipped part of the sky/sun
hey buddy! thank you for watching. everything i express in my videos is just my opinion born from my own experience and extensive testing. I encourage everyone to do their own testing. When it comes to the D-cine profile in the Mini 3 Pro….i personally think it’s NOT flat enough, therefore not actually giving enough additional dynamic range to justify the work of restoring all the colors AND correct exposure. Your second question…would a stronger ND filter have been able to keep highlight details. Well…..the starting point for any scene is to properly expose the subject. and let the shadows and highlights fall where they may. That is what I do. A stronger ND filter POSSIBLY would have underexposed the subject AND lost all details in the shadows. For me…..i don’t really care. I properly expose the subject THEN focus on all the many different composition decisions. I don’t waste time worrying about fine details in the shadows or highlights. Some of the greatest photos & movies in history have poor dynamic range and lots of grain/noise. But the storytelling is strong and the composition strong. So that’s what I focus on. Instead of spending time trying to inch towards a more technically better image. I focus on lighting the subject properly then composition.
hey Ian. I checked out your channel. Wow you’ve been flying for a while and been to some great locations. Very cool. To answer your question….yes these principals apply to every drone. My bottom line is I encourage flying filmmakers of all skill level to use AUTO exposure so their footage will always have correct exposure AND they can now focus all their time & attention on improving their cinematography. Thanks for watching buddy and welcome to our FLYING CAMERA CREW
yesssssss! Best comment ever. THAT is why I do this. Thank you for watching and letting me know you got value from it. Welcome to our little gang of flying filmmakers! You’re up in Nova Scotia!? Right on. Cold. But beautiful. But really cold. Ha!
Awesome stuff, Ted. I am slowly moving away from my old habits of _not_ using auto settings and your results keep reminding me that the Mini 3 Pro is different from the Mavic Pro and Phantom 4 Pro that I started flying with years ago. Got the message: no filter at golden hours, auto settings. I'll have to try 120fps because of the 1080p resolution when I normally shoot in 4K. I also need to give 24fps a try. Thanks!
Thanks Ted. I appreciate your tips. I think you're right about focusing on the shot mor than having to worry about exposure, WB and the rest. Choosing my shots correctly will save me from the need of ND filters. Thanks man!!
yesssss! Welcome aboard to our FLYING CAMERA CREW. Focusing on the joy of learning & practicing the fundamentals of cinematography is the only way to improve video footage. And of course….the art of storytelling.
Ted, thanks so much for opening my eyes to being ok with using auto exposure. I’ve been doing photography and film for 10 years professionally and sometimes full manual mode with my drone slows me down. I love the idea of one filter for day and no filters in softer light. Love your channel!
Jake! wow man you are a talented SOB. I wanted the Andrew & Mary ep. Stunning. I’m glad you liked my tutorial. Yup I use manual exposure 100% of the time in my mirrorless camera, but almost never in my drones. That works really well for me.
So informative!! I'm getting the mini 3 pro with the RC controller. This great totorial will sure come in handy. A must watch again for me. Thanks Ted!!!
One thing I like to use is a clear filter such as what I've been using on my Air 2. This is merely to protect the lens as prior to doing this I have had bugs get into the lens and it was no fun removing them. It's a whole lot easier to simply wipe a filter, which even if you should happen to damage it only costs a few bucks to replace. The reason I mentioned this is I'd like to ask you if you know of any clear or "night filters" that are available for the Mini 3 Pro? Living here in the south when I shoot night footage in the summer such as while filming our local city firework displays, that's when all the bugs come out and even an ND 4 filter prevents some of the needed light from reaching the sensor... I have even used these clear filters on cloudy days when I still want to protect the lens but still want all the light I can get to reach the sensor. On bright sunny days I will admit that I do use ND filters when I'm flying into the sun or when there's snow on the ground on bright sunny days... Yes, we do get snow here in the Carolina's.
Ted, I tried AUTO exposure on my real estate video job yesterday on several warehouses. The footage came out great! I'm so glad I found your channel. 1 question: if the day is really overcast and not very bright, should you still use the ND64, or treat the day like sunset with NO ND? Thanks!
hey James! Glad your video came out great. Getting correct exposure is the most important thing. What drone are you using? …then I can answer your question a little more accurately.
Ok, great video! What I learned from the video…No tuning at all(almost). You just convinced me to buy only one ND and not 5 or 6. Thx a lot. Keep up with the great vids.
Ted, I totally agree with you. I played around with D-log and different Luts a lot. It's so time consuming and nearly all scenario's auto mode just does the job fine! Only point is that I lock my exposure in the direction I want to film to get the same exposure overall when turning the drone. I have a question about your stick settings for the Mini 3 Pro. Do you think this settings are also usable for the Mavic 3 Classic? I have both drones. Greetings from a subscriber from The Netherlands 🇳🇱
wow you have two incredible flying cameras there! Congrats. I have flown the Mavic 3 Classic but wasn’t able to test any sensitivity changes to the controller. I’ve flow just about every DJI drone and have the same general feeling that the Normal and Sport mode are just fine for me. Its the Cine mode that needs to be slowed down quite a bit. Worth testing. Fly safe!
This was very informative, Ted. Thank you very much. I'll try out the ND64 filter during the day in the future. All of my footage is done in one shot, so I love that you agree with me on the auto exposure and not swapping filters concept. I just want to concentrate on the scene that I am creating as I have to for the format that I produce. Thank you once again for a great video.
yeah buddy! Destressing is major. Flying alone is enough to worry about. So glad you found value in my humble little tutorials. Are there any topics you’d like to see me cover in an upcoming episode?
@@TedNemeth I had been shooting manual for years, second nature, jobbing as a freelance photographer. I even go back to manual focus film cameras but droning is a completely new beast and realise it’s time to put more faith in the tech. So far you seem to have all the creative angles covered. The inspiration I needed for this (ad)venture:) Would be interesting to know how you get along with drone regs at home and on your travels. How you plan around any restrictions, how this can affect your creative choices. It was Phil Bloom btw I first got the shutter rule from for video funnily enough but this was for a DSLR .
yes! welcome aboard my friend. RUclips seems to be keeping my channel a secret. (that is me complaining!). ha. just having fun. Fly safe and I’ll see you in the next episode.
hello my fellow Hungarian pilot! Congrats on your M3. Loved seeing your first flight video recently. The first few flights are always super nervous. Well….mine were. One of my best tips is….when taking off and landing…..make sure you and the drone are looking in the same direction. When this is the case, your left and right are the same as the drone’s left and right with the joysticks. I’ll explain is another way: when the drone is hovering infront of you and you are looking at the front of the drone: when you push right on the joystick the drone will go left, and vice versa. Make sense? That gets confusing when you’re getting close to objects and the left & right are reversed.
@@TedNemeth we always need practice, these days I can't fly to much because of the weather, but it will come☺️ This is not my first drone, but it's a great suggestion Ted. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
Hi Ted, what about focus? Do you use auto focus or manual focus? When I use auto focus I'm afraid I'll have focus breathing. What's your thoughts? Thank you for this amazing video!
Hi, I have a DJI Mini 3 Standard and I cannot find D-Cinelike or Slow motion, but you claim that these video settings are available for Mini 3 Standard... (I have firmware updated and SD card inserted). Am I doing something wrong? Thanks
hey scubaDude. I simply hit record on the drone and my mirrorless camera(audio) at the exact same time and lined them up in editing. So you’re a professional diver or recreational? That is literally top of my list to try.
Thank you so much, Ted. I just discovered your videos and I love your pragmatic and realistic approach... especially since you are validating my use of auto 😁
ha! right on. yeah the DJI auto exposure algorithm is incredibly good. I always say: the the computer handle the technical decisions, that leaves us to handle the fun creative elements.
thank you buddy. I appreciate it. Hey I checked out your website. Dang! You been in the flying camera game for a long ass time. You’re an original. I’m just a newbie. Great images you capture.

@3:25 hit me right in the gut! That is EXACTLY what I always went through years ago when flying my Phantoms and watching youtube vids. Had all of this Dlog footage that was ripe for editing, but had zero way of knowing what it was SUPPOSED to look like. With these newer "landscape photographer flying cams" (wink wink), what you're talking about regarding the normal profile makes so much freaking sense. THANK YOU!
Jeff you made my day. Thank you for the kind words. SUPER glad to hear my humble little tutorials provided value. A Phantom drone! I see you like the FPVs also. How long you been flying?

Enjoying discovering your videos. I'm wondering if you have any advice about how to deal with bringing in say DJI Drone footage recorded at 30 fps etc using quick shots and then interpreting that for a 25 fps timeline? Blending footage really. Any tips? Love your approach. Sculpting light and getting good composition sure is the main thing.
hey Rashers! wow thank you for supporting the channel. It really does mean everything to hear that it’s helping. I love sharing what little I’ve learned. Dude it’s so frustrating!!!! DJI won’t put 24fps/25fps in quickshots! I read some chat rooms once and people are pissed. I agree. No excuse. They could easily do it in a firmware. I use quickshots frequently instead of active track modes. I got so frustrated with the inconsistency of my Mini 3 Pro active track modes that I gave up. Don’t use them anymore. I learned to use quickshots so it kinda looks like a tracking shot as the subject is moving in the screen. And quickshots is perfectly smooth everytime. No tips for you except to slow it down proportionally. Your video editing software should offer a conform option? What do you use?
Hi, Ted, it's supper nice video, love it! I can't set D-Cine mode, Mac system won't read the files, I was not aware of this issus I had one day I shot in D-Cine mode, my Macbook Pro won't read those files (all my videos ) it was really bad.
As a beginner on drones coming from photography and design it's rather nice to hear you confirming what I had gleaned so far as regards to the settings, even down to the ND filter to use during the day, no flies on either of us 😂😂😂
yeah buddy. thank you for watching and being part of the community here. Welcome to our little flying camera gang. I watched your latest Mini 3 episode. You have a strong eye for composition.
You are blowing my mind with this. I don't think I realized how much anxiety I had around the damn camera settings and your "permission" to use auto exposure and "normal" color profile feels like a giant weight lifted. This is weirdly the video I didn't know I needed. - signed one of those amateurs trying to pretend to be a pro
yeah Chad! Best comment. Thank you! It’s my opinion that mirrorless & DSLR cameras should use manual exposure the majority of the time. And it’s my opinion that drones should use auto exposure the majority of the time because the wide range of dynamics of a flying camera. Chad welcome to our little gang here of flying camera friends!
Stumbled across your video and love it. Thanks for not making it confusing and showing us noobs how to get good footage. Can't wait to get back up and try out your suggestions so I can go back to enjoying flying and not worry so much about chasing the perfect settings I saw on RUclips tutorials. Subscribed to your channel and looking forward to your new videos. Thanks again.
@@TedNemeth I have been using some of your pointers and all I can say is THANK YOU! I wish I could have seen your video right when I got my drone. I watched to many videos on how to use manual mode if you want to get the best out of your camera. I am currently using auto mode for majority of my flights and it looks so much nicer than my old videos where I had no idea what I was doing but used manual mode. Maybe one day I will figure all that stuff out, but for me now, auto is the ticket. Plus it removes so much frustration and time editing that I can now use for flying. Thanks again, you rock!
Hey Ted! Another great vlog mate! I would just ask… if recording in D-cinelike, I always shoot a few frames of my calibration colour chart, never let me down and makes it super easy to match your colours and saturation in post. Whats your thoughts? Cheers mate & keep up the awesome work!! 🤘🏻
right on! thank you for watching. yup I’m a huge supporter of AUTO exposure in drones. In land cameras I always encourage manual exposure. But the dynamics of a flying camera are a different story. It makes AUTO exposure much more beneficial and allows the time to focus on and practice cinematography. Much more important.

Great video and advice 👍 I have to admit that everything I film with my drone is in auto settings, as I simply can't grasp manual settings!! I am definitely not a photographer
Its my opinion that you do not have to use manual settings in a drone. Focus all that time & energy on improving the cinematography in your scene. Manual settings IN A DRONE will not improve anything. Thank you for watching my friend!
3:30 - Getting accurate colour balance is super difficult. Consider use of a Macbeth colour card to get colour balance back to how it was…assuming that you want to go that far. Also at 17:31 - Auto exposure is an excellent thing. Just know when it’s likely not to give the right result for you and at that point switch to manual, use AE lock - whatever suits the problem. I totally have to agree with you about the cinematography points you make. I trained in photographic science and I can get well exposed and composed images when I want them, but my creativity is totally useless. I love watching beautifully shot images.
WOW!! I'm going to call you Professor Ted!!! Your knowledge of drone technology never ceases to amaze me!! I've taken your advice and have started using Auto Exposure exclusively with an ND62 filter during the day!! My footage is looking great!!! Thanks SO much for all your valuable info, Prof!! Can you make a video on how to change the Photos Settings to be not as bright ? My images are coming at horrible for my DJi Mini 3 (not pro) and it's disappointing. My video mode is beautiful and not bright but the photo mode is overexposed like CRAZY.
I would add a photo if I could but it's bad on the brightness
@@legalmissingzx9I believe there's a way to change the default EV value.
Yeah Ive been complicating myself with that lately a lot....
Really tired of trying to watch Mini 3 videos only to find it's really for the Pro model....
Agree
Yep. I was just looking for the d-cinelike setting and it’s not there.
Exactly
Agree
I'm trying out your settings, today.
These lil guys needed to slow down a bit. Thanks for the direction. I'll update with info about how it went.
excellent! Please let me know how it goes. I love to help whenever possible and share what I’ve learned.
the black and white of your video is classy af
ahh man I’m glad to hear that actually. I wonder how people interpret it. Dude happy holidays!
Great Vid! Thank you very much. Greetings from Germany. Can you say one word more to ae-lock and when/how to use?
hey my friend!
@@TedNemeth thank you very much, Ted! Merry Christmas my friend!
Never getting tired of seeing your drone video shots, masterfully executed!
Nithing left to say, just set parameters correctly and enjoy flying - this is the quintesence of pleasure in flying :)
Thanks for great words :)
thank you my friend. Great motorcycle shots. Ride safe! I been riding & building bikes for 30 years. Its the best.

Great video learning a lot. How about focus modes?
Total newbie here. SO glad to hear you say about using auto settings and getting great shots. Thanks for a really informative video.
right on my friend. Is your first name Gez yes? Welcome aboard to our FLYING CAMERA CREW
Huge help Ted. Thanks for all the settings and research. I’m going back to Normal - now I know why my drone footage is so flat.
For Mac user, you have to select H.265 Codec in D-Cine, if you set in H.264 Codec Mac won't read file. this is from my experience.

Auto settings and clean screen is my thing !
hi Olav. Wow you are quite a veteran with a camera. I loved your latest episode: En rolig kveldsseilas
@@TedNemeth Thanks a lot, Im still an amateur though... and do not have the time I want to spend on my hobbies ...
The regular Mini 3 has D-cinelike? I think it's only the 3 pro, that has it..
I am off and on using filters. I definitely notice a difference with water, but sometimes the blur is not necessary. Great as always Ted!
thanks for watching buddy. Yup settings are all about experimenting and see what works for you and your environment & workflow.
Happy holidays mate.
Nice!!! You’re awesome for sharing these settings. Looking forward to have more fun with my Mini 3!!!
The best explanation thus far.
ah man thank you sir. I’m working on an entire drone masterclass right now. it should be almost 2 hours long. It’s everything I’ve ever learned about flying cameras.
i so amazed that you don't mention that H-264 can't record in 10bit...
Regards
Appreciate the points on auto exposure for flying. Haven't heard anyone else talk about it before. 👍
Going to get the most out of my Mini 3 with these info in mind. Thanks for sharing your expertise!
hey Darrell! Thanks for watching. Congrats on your Mini 3. Is it your first flying camera?
What a priceless tips man!!!! Just reconfirming what I have been doing..
Have you got a video explaining best camera settings, for pictures during day and night time ?
hey Jason. Some might find my workflow for photos….blasphemous, but it works great for me, and I know others that swear by it. I explain my photo setting/workflow in the episode:

Such a helpful video. Definitely taking notes. Guess I found a new fave channel for my Mini 3.
ha!
Underrated video imo. Great job
Awesome video, learned so much in 18 minutes about drone photography. Now, need to learn about the new .65x wide angle lense DJI just came out with…
hey buddy! thank you for watching and taking the time to let me know it was of value.
Greetings from Canada Ted. This was awesome man! So helpful! Answered a bunch of questions that were on my mind. Thank you so much.
Thank you for sharing your expertise in camera settings, much appreciated
Spot on, No BS. The 180 rule is so overarted
thank you Edwin! i appreciate it. Please let me know if there’s a specific topic(s) you’d like me to cover in an upcoming episode.
Hi Ted, firstly thanks for thank for your tutorials! Do these setting work well on a Magic 3?
This is the only time I've actually understood this sh**! Thank you! I need to fly the drone, not worry about all the nonsense!! 🔥
I like your style, as a beginner I have found great ideas and inspiration through your advice 😎 thank you for your time and work on your channel
Thanks - I have enough trouble seeing the screen as it is, so I thought I was cutting out important stuff by just having 'auto' everything.
So informative!! I'm getting the mini 3 pro with the RC controller. This great totorial will sure come in handy. A must watch again for me. Thanks Ted!!!
wow, some radical perspectives, cannot wait to try them out.
right on my friend. I look forward to your feedback. Hey I checked out your website. Super impressive. I love the breadth of services.
@@TedNemeth thanks, its all a hobby for now.
Thank you very much Ted. I appreciate your work, your explanations and your time. Greetings from Michigan.
@@TedNemeth I use a Mavic 2 Pro and Air 2s. Thanks.
Thank you once again for a great video.
yes exactly! focus on the fun creative stuff. Let the algorithm handle the technical adjustments.
Great video Ted from the UK
New to drone filming (still practising:)) and your advice on exposure was wonderfully destressing. Thank you!
Why I just found your channel now. Thank for knowledge you share.
yes! welcome aboard my friend. RUclips seems to be keeping my channel a secret. (that is me complaining!). ha. just having fun. Fly safe and I’ll see you in the next episode.
Thank you for this explanation, straight away going to order an ND64 filter.
hello my fellow Hungarian pilot!
I'm hoping you put together a Brooklyn Graffiti Safari. That would be amazing!
Hi, I have a DJI Mini 3 Standard and I cannot find D-Cinelike or Slow motion, but you claim that these video settings are available for Mini 3 Standard... (I have firmware updated and SD card inserted). Am I doing something wrong? Thanks
same here, any solution ted?
nice one mate realy anjoyed it but what about sound? do you record it externally and after you add it to your clip?
hey scubaDude. I simply hit record on the drone and my mirrorless camera(audio) at the exact same time and lined them up in editing.
So you’re a professional diver or recreational? That is literally top of my list to try.
Excellent Ted.
So lucky to still have your drone after those pigeons!

Beautifully explained - thank you!
thank you buddy.

THANK YOU!

LOL..the gangsta pigeons of New York should be your next project!
@@TedNemeth Thanks how embarrassing that was my 4th flight ever 😂😂🤔As I said very new.
You are blowing my mind with this. I don't think I realized how much anxiety I had around the damn camera settings and your "permission" to use auto exposure and "normal" color profile feels like a giant weight lifted.
This is weirdly the video I didn't know I needed.

Jerry I truly appreciate your support and kind words. Welcome aboard sir! We are the FLYING CAMERA CREW.
Thanks again Ted, really informative AND entertaining. And those birds! Shades of Alfred Hitchcock! I thought one was going to take out your drone 😲
Hey Ted! Another great vlog mate! I would just ask… if recording in D-cinelike, I always shoot a few frames of my calibration colour chart, never let me down and makes it super easy to match your colours and saturation in post. Whats your thoughts?
Cheers mate & keep up the awesome work!! 🤘🏻
Awesome tutorials, Ted. By the way, nice JMM frames.
hey my friend! Thank you for the kind words. Hey what are JMM frames?

Thank you! Very well explained!
right on! thank you for watching. yup I’m a huge supporter of AUTO exposure in drones. In land cameras I always encourage manual exposure. But the dynamics of a flying camera are a different story. It makes AUTO exposure much more beneficial and allows the time to focus on and practice cinematography. Much more important.
@@TedNemeth I’m watching your Brooklyn and manhattan drone shots as I type this. I might subscribe to your channel now. Thank you for sharing and tips.
Perfectomundo Amigo. Some brilliant and concise explanations, especially D-Cinelike. Nice to see Gangster Pigeon make a reappearance. That's great footage 👏👏👏
Excellent video, thanks so much for these great tips! Would you also have some tips for the settings when flying in low light conditions, especially the iso settings to avoid noise in the dark areas of the footage?
hey David! Thanks for watching. In several weeks I’m planning on doing a special episode focused on night filming: setting and tips.
@@TedNemeth thank you, I’m looking forward to it.
Well done sir, thank you very much... It will be very handy as we just arrived to New Zealand 😉
wow! New Zealand is a drone paradise. Truly. If you post footage please tag me. would love to see. Where are you from originally?
@@TedNemeth I am originally from Prague but live in Newcastle about 2 hours up north from Sydney 😊
Really refreshing view point thank you.
Dave thank you for the kind words!
Hehe gangster pigeons had me chuckling bro excellent tips on fine tuning the settings I’ve been playing flat out every flight it’s so impressive how much difference it makes luv ya work mate have a fantastic Christmas Ted cheers
Awesome review, Greetings from Malaysia
Wow you are a serious motorcycle enthusiast. Like myself, been riding for over 30 years. I will be visiting Malaysia in the future. We should meet up and go for a ride! Could you send me an email so we can stay connected? Ted@FilmingOptimism.com
Awesome stuff, Ted
Instant sub! What an incredible amount of experience, exposure(lol) and knowledge you have shared! Thank you. Just waiting to apply when I get my drone back. #crashed 😢!
Bobby! Thanks for the kind words brother. Sorry to hear about the crash. We all do it. Gravity always wins. I’m a beginner drummer. Practicing my paradiddles. I ain’t dirty yet but I’ll get there.
Welcome to our FLYING CAMERA CREW.
Great video and advice 👍
I have to admit that everything I film with my drone is in auto settings, as I simply can't grasp manual settings!!
I am definitely not a photographer
Its my opinion that you do not have to use manual settings in a drone. Focus all that time & energy on improving the cinematography in your scene.
Manual settings IN A DRONE will not improve anything.
Thank you for watching my friend!
thank you for the full detailed explanation ! Good job
glad you found value in it my friend. I watched your Xmas video. Where is that located? cool.
Dave I love your channel. A man of many curiosities & talents!
@@TedNemeth - thanks Ted! I can’t say that my work has any artistic quality but hopefully I am improving! I am inspired by your artistry!
Oh, did you have to pay Frank Wang for that cameo on your video? Thought he used to be an adult movie star?
OOps! I meant to say ND64 not 62!!
I will have to check these setting out!
hey loved your Tail Of The Dragon video. Bucket list. Good for you man. I rode moto through the mountains north of LA, where Jay Leno drives all his cars. That’s damn amazing. Have a great New Years.
@@TedNemeth hey thanks! It was a great drive. I’ve done it 3 times now, but each time is a blast. I would love to rent a exotic and drive LA! Have Happy New year!!
