- Having followed my adventures with the InfluEnzo my mate Metin recently got caught up in the Ferrari bug. He bought the cheapest Ferrari 355 he could find in the UK. He had some predictable issues but the latest is unbelievable!!
Engine out and back in is already 42 hours of work... Having owned a 355 myself, I’m not surprised about the amount... The 355 goes through money for maintenance FASTER than the amount needed for fuel ! (Unless you drive them on tracks....). I owned one for 7 years; it set me back 46.000,- in maintenance alone. For 38.000 km covered. A pick: one oil reservoir (in the V of the engine next to the belts; the lid broke... so they changed the whole reservoir) (380,-); during an outing with the club a cooling whose broke (can happen since the car was 12 years old)(1.500,-); exhaust cracked (355 disease) (3.500,-); 3x belt change (4.500,-/each); ... All service was done at an official dealer for allegedly preserving resale value... I still miss my 355 because she was so pretty (uni black on cuio), and even though I love Ferraris up to the 458 Italia, I’m keeping away from them just for the sheer running costs. They really are Diva’s !
Interesting. This is why when it came to the crunch, I chose an R8 (2008 R-Tronic) over the 355. 355 looks stunning but not at any price. I do wonder how much DIY one could do though, esp if you have a lift etc
Totally agree with you. Had a F355 manual and the one before previous owner had a 18k€ engine job in France just before selling it. Previous owner bought it under warranty and got a manifold crack. replaced by a 3.5k€ Larini system and out of warranty. He was afraid and exchanged it for my 996 GT3 CS mk1. I kept that car for 3 years and just did a battery and puncture front tyre. Believe it or not, this low mileage beauty with full history sold for 38k€ (red manual berlinetta). Which was the price I bought the GT3 CS. Today those cars are at least the double price.

@@paredding After seeing a few of some DIY repairs on video, I was appalled at the "rookie" repairs. Now, someone like myself, a retired mechanic with lots of years fixing several makes...those repairs & services seem rather straightforward & frankly simple chores...yes, a lift is required, as is a full toolset. It would be a weekend thing, checking out your prized Ferrari before you take it to the road...but an individual checks out his light aircraft before one takes to flight, don't they?
Make sure he keeps a fire extinguisher on board at all times.
6000 Pound for engine out an many other fixes ist NOT EXPENSIVE for a 355 - it' normal
My friend used to have the same intermittent starting trouble with his 90’s AMG. Whenever he parked outside this one place it just wouldn’t like to start!
Why not give the original selling dealer the opportunity to have fixed it. With the markups of the second garage, the original may have been OK to fix the problem at zero or far reduced cost. Sounds like the immobilier needs a metal box around it to shield it from all those "negative waves" man...
I have a weird rule of thumb. If the numberplate is not straight, walk away. If someone can't put a numberplate on a ferrari on straight, what's the rest like?

Lol, yeah. Coming at it from the other end: just last week I made a point of meticulously organising my garage prior to welcoming a potential buyer for a bike I was selling. It sold quite easily.

Happened on my Impreza a few times in my ownership, a chap from France flew into buy it, rang me said he couldn't start it, had stopped to get some supplies. Explained the issues i used to have regarding the immobiliser and interference and explained he should push it to a different part of the car park, hung up.
8 hours later get a call and he was still in the same place. Went out to where he was stuck, pushed it over 1 row of parking spaces and it fired up first turn of the key, wouldn't believe me and immediately shut it off and of course the car refused to start again. Got him on his way eventually.
I had exactly the same with my impreza too, parked opposite a police station..... no restart, rolled to the bottom of the car park, started straight up.....
I was just about to comment saying a similar thing, there's a car park by my local Police Station where I had parked my Impreza. Wouldn't start at all and eventually it fired up after repeatedly trying.

Who take's their exotic car to a supermarket? I took my BMW Convertible to the undercover airport parking lot at RDU and when I returned to the vehicle somebody had reversed into my front end breaking the fog light and crushing the grille and hood probably with a pickup truck and drove off! You cannot have a nice car and publicly park it anywhere these days without having it damaged!
Some people can only afford a ferrari and not another 'daily driver' okay? Please be sensitive to possible financial situations.
Unfortunately, most people don't care about their own cars so they care even less about others.

I parked my 275 in the road for five years and all over London. Damage small dent and lost back badge. Things were different in the 1970s! It's not practical to drive these things any more. No wonder so many have small mileages.

I've had a similar problem befor with my jeep grand cherokee.
I parked at my friends house and they had a new heating system fitted in the house. The oil fired heating system had a electronic display system in the house to say how much oil was left in the tank down the garden. Turns out it run on the same signal as my alarm system on my car and jammed my alarm . My car would not start until he turned his heating system off at the mains. This was back in about 2004.
Both myself and a mate had this happen on our bikes, my Yamaha Fazer 1000 and his Kawasaki 1400 parked at the café at Olivers Mount, Scarborough, there are several masts in that location, a lady came from the café and told us to freewheel the bikes 200yds down the road and try it, they both started fine...we both had Datatool alarm/imobiliser systems fitted.
No fender shield stickers.. Yay!
hello cobrapub here the guy who drove my 1982 GTSI from AZ to Fla in the USA!My Ferrari is getting a steering mind of its own and I have to thank you for your vid about the upper ball joint replacement I will look into it!Oh and one more thing I found out the rear lights had been changed to LEDS and they hyper flash,after paying a so called expert a flasher relay and 2hrs of flishing around I decided to go to Bulb + Battery and replace this mess,thats when I found the problem bad wire splices and bad fixture contacts! 2 weeks later all sorted out I had to upgrade from GE 1157 to Sylvana 1156 bulbs for the turn indicators. I have decided to turn this car into a 308/288 conversion and may be an EVO if the rust continues!

Very interesting. Luckily mines an early 2.7 car, never had the problem. It's been an amazing car for 11 years with me so far. A keeper.
There's got to be a way to shield the immobilizer from EMI.
The Immobiliser electronics are already in a metal case inside a metal case. Perhaps the phone tower signals are interfering with the antenna on the immobiliser (outside the cases). If you shield that, your key fob won't work.
If you are able to block the RF, the function of the immobilizer won't work either.
I can only imagine the relief the owner felt when the car started.
The Color is Blu Pozzi, Darkest Blue Ferrari's come in, solid, non metalic color, one shade lighter than Midnight Blue, Two Shades darker than Royal Blue. There's also a Vintage Ferrari Color called Blue Lancia that is very similar that was seen as early as the 250 GTB's

Love 355s and it's still the car I really want. I thought I knew everything about this car and I was absolutely dumbfounded after watching this. You learn something new everyday 👍
Have heard about radio mast issue to, & also some petrol stations (which were using a particular frequency for something), stopped various cars from starting.
New (at the time) technology not checking what other, older technologies were using, co-ordination failure, thankfully not too common.

Great story, glad it ended well 👍. Boring but slightly related, there is a supermarket near me and if I park in a certain spot, my remote unlock doesn't let me in the car. The first time it happened, I popped back in and bought a pack of batteries thinking the fob had died 😁😁. I have since learnt to park elsewhere 👍👍.
I remember decades ago there was a story that the radio masts near the junction of the M1 and M6 immobilised Audi’s. I don’t know if it was true as there was no Google back then to check.

we had a similar mystery bout of dozens of drivers being locked out of their new "keyless entry" cars in my local shopping centre car park here a few months back. Caused much merriment on TV news - came down to the "buzzer" used by the local pharmacy that let customers know their prescription was ready to collect (like the ones you get at some cafes). The frequency completely jammed the immobiliser and locking functions of the cars in question.
Immobilizer interferences has been an issue with a lot of manufacturers and cars in fact. What must be painful is the 6k£ bill.. But I mean, if the engine has to go out, sometimes, it's better to do everything while it's out. Timing belt, belts, pulleys and tensionners, fix the minor leaks, check and change the clutch. Still a lot of money to spend but for the peace of mind later, and the resale value maybe.
Many years ago a new Mercedes car would cut out passing an FM transmitter in Germany. The only place this happened. Mercedes paid for the transmitter to be moved further back from the road!
It’s an EMC problem. You need to find out where the interference is entering the system and add in either filtering or shielding. The frequency used in the immobiliser will be different from mobile phones.

Most likely, engine out, change all belts, spark plugs and leads, oil and coolant, maybe a weeping cam cover gasket and engine back in. 6000 K at a Ferrari tech shop all day long. Never buy a 348/355 unless you have very deep pockets. Of course this is just what I think...

@@ghibli608 42 hours just to drop and replace the engine - without any work on it? Are you sure? I used to work as a mechanic for a Ford dealer many years ago, and even dropping/replacing some of the larger engines (V6's) and transmission was probably a 4-6 hour bookable job. Can't for the life of me wonder how badly Ferrari could have screwed up the design of the 355 for it to take more than an entire working week just to swap an engine - no wonder they are struggling in F1 !! :)
This happened with my mid 1990s Holden here in Australia back in the late 90s. Took a road trip to Australia's capital Canberra and visited the Telstra tower which is a large telecommunications tower with a viewing platform etc. They were warnings everywhere in the car park that your car may not start because of the immobilizer issue and sure enough when we went back to the car afterwards to leave the car would not start. Had to put my key into the special immobilizer key hole in the inside of the door frame and then punch a number into the stereo. Luckily I had the number with me......
I had a Range Rover where the immobilizer couldn't be turned off because of a garage door opener that was being pressed by the sun visor it was clipped to...that was fun
Had that happen twice in my old 550. The first time the AA towed me to the other of the service station car park (much to the entertainment of onlookers) where the car started immediately!
Your friend should have stuck with the 348 Jack - keep it analogue! I’m not that big a fan of the soft top on the 355 Spider. A GTS seems to be the best of both worlds to me!
I used to have the same problem with my P38 Range Rover. It stopped me after I took someone to Heathrow and parked too near the radar. The RAC towed my to the other side of a big embankment and, hey presto, it was fine. I must have had this happen half a dozen times in varyingly embarrassing circumstances. Later versions than mine had a different RF receiver which is much more careful about its frequencies, and once I got hold of one of those it has been fine ever since. My car is a P-reg and your friend's Ferrari is R-reg, so quite likely it is the same or very similar component. There is probably a similar fix.
Ooooooo yeah, a bit harsh on the 348 I thought......They are actually great cars, Ferrari dont make bad or crap cars, each Ferrari stands on its own merits........However you do need to have the right 348, post June 1992 ideally for the rear suspension revision, brake revision, electrical system revsion and a number of other things which made them a much nicer performing car, the 348 is an often misunderstood and an overlooked modern day classic....I love mine, and I love the driving experience it gives me......Its easy to work on, and the engine responds well to tuning, a few small things can be done and they really perk up.
But how about this 355, what a cacophony of minor calamities!! Oh the joys of Ferrari ownership.......As always I did enjoy the video.....and on my "to get" list is in fact a Pre Airbag, 6 speed Manual F355.....

That was a really interesting story, near new phone masts could have that affect, if I am not mistaken there was a model of jaguar that your own mobile phone had a affect on the brakes, thanks for your video, 👍👍👏👏.
Your boot lid/bonnet not being straight would annoy me if it was mine. I have seen many older Ferraris with wonky boot or bonnet panels, and a lot of front lids where they straighten out instead of following the line of the wing. Great video as always. Thanks.

Strange story. I’ve never experienced that issue with my 355 spider and it’s also a Bosch Motronic 5.2. Maybe the mobile phone network in Belgium uses a different frequency. Hope he can enjoy the car issue-free from now on. And good luck fixing your beautiful 308!
...and it ist good to have the earlier 2,7 Bosch Motronic, which has not only more horses, but no telekom-probs....

I thought you were going to say it was the sensor in the automatic supermarket doors. I swear I read somewhere that they can interfere with certain car alarms if you park too close.

Ferrari had a wake up call when Honda brought out the NSX, they then brought out the 355, much more refined.
Adding Clip-on Ferrite Core Ring Bead Anti-interference High-frequency Filters on the cables going into the Bosch immobiliser should solve the problem. Basically these Ferrite cores will stop the High-frequency mobile phone Signal from passing through, so the cables connected to the immobiliser can't act as mobile phone antennas anymore and the problem should be fixed. These Clip-on Ferrite Cores are very cheap, so it is well worth giving this a shot.
Slight correction - you don't have to "get a code from Ferrari" - the 4-digit PIN should be supplied with the car.

The blue from the F355 looks like a Blu Le Mans to me. Very nice indeed.
And I really like the ‘plasticky’ interior of the 348 (finally received mine after months waiting due to corona). It makes me think of the Sony Walkman I used to own, which was just the coolest thing ever 😎
I used to have same problem with keyless ignition on Harley Davidson V-Rod motorcycle. If wheeled it far enough away from cell-tower it would then start just fine! 😂
Happened to me on a motorcycle trip across France. Stopped to fill up, then could not disarm the alarm/immobiliser. Interference from a radio mast. Tried pushing the bike to the other side of the petrol station. No love. Called a buddy who suggested holding the key fob right up against the alarm/immobiliser unit when pressing disarm. Bingo! Lesson learned.
My friends a mechanic and his bosses wife bought a brand new Toyota Corolla. It was parked outside work and wouldn’t start. He pushed it into his workshop and it started immediately and she then went to the shop in it and it was absolutely fine.
When she got back to the garage she parked in exactly the same position again and later when she went to it it wouldn’t start again. He then pushed it back into the workshop and it started with no problems again. He started to put two and two together and moved it outside and again it wouldn’t start.
Instead of it been a phone mast though he realised it was parked over a manhole cover that transmitted electricity
What a heck of a ROARRRR! You’re a lucky bloke Jacko and no mistake! The 355 is indeed a pretty car. But I would love for you to find and review a Ferrari 288 GTO. And a 512BB. Both are sorta bigger brothers of your lovely 308 - the Influenzo! Please consider this request!

And given that you mentioned that it sticks out a bit too much, blue would suit it perfectly. We had a Toyota Previa that refused to lock in the carpark of a local supermarket.

They used to the same with my Impreza wrx, lost count of the times I had to push it far enough away to work.
We had the same issue in Dad's Chrysler Voyager in France in the late 1990s.
I had an early wireless tablet for drawing on a pc in about 2002. After having it for several months, and having lots of problems with being unable to use the remote central locking on my Prius, plus neighbours telling me their central locking wouldn't work either it finally dawned on me that the tablet was blocking the signals. Switched it off and the problems disappeared 😂
The same can happend with example the new Harley's and automatic gate controle's with the "credit card" access. They have to push the bike outside the magnetic field.
Part and parcel of owning a classic car, not the first time I've heard about mast etc causing issues, played havoc with some early P38 Range Rovers, battery would drain in a short time as the BECM would not go to sleep.
I remember this was a problem with motorbikes in the early days of immobilisers being required by insurance companies.
Oh and about your freinds 355 car color I think its corsica blue.That phone thing is the reason I bought a 1979 Ferrari GTB I hated the old man silver and repainted it La Ferrari Blue and a 1982 GTSi white I won in a e-bay auction by mistake but she is growing on me !

Damn.... despite setbacks, I prefer my dilapidated neglected epitome of classic British history which, up to now, has cost me less than a £6k servicing bill to a Ferrari 🤔. I feel the pain for your pal..... but his car certainly looks good.

Are used to work at Overfinch which was a range Rover specialist and we were always getting phone calls from customers who had our cars and were leaving them at the airport going on holiday coming back and the cars were dead and it was the phone masts keeping the cars easy use and be ECM is alive so I just flat the batteries that’s also another thing he needs to be careful of.
I bought my first 308 GT4 in 1986 & have had four of those plus a 1993 Mondial 3.4t coupe and my latest which is a 1988 Mondial 3.2 which presently has 69,858 miles on it & I want get it up to the 70,000 asap. My biggest mileage to date was on my second 308GT4, at 98,500! That car when I bought it had had a speedo replacement at 10,000 miles and included in the history pack was a certificate confirming that the new one fitted had 00000 miles on it, so actually it had done 108,500 when I sold to pay an income tax bill!
Seven months & two owners later I ran into it again at Auto Italia show & was pleased to see it. It’s a fantastic drivers car, no trouble at all, I asked how many miles it had done , & the new owner was someone who tries to keep the mileage down to preserve value. Illogical that is! Anyway it had now got 48,500 on it! Yes, it had been clocked & lost 50,000 miles to preserve its value! The new owner would not have wanted the history file from me! This was in 1994, I wonder what the odometer now says?
My latest Ferrari was bought in September 2019.
Inwould have bought another 308GT4 if they weren’t so expensive now. All the previous ones had cost to buy at £16,000 to £22,000 but now cost £47,500 +++ & needed regular servicing if used regularly, with an average 308 GT4 cost of £300 to £450 on an annual oil change, brake fluid service etc.
The key is use! My worse 308 GT4, I bought in 2000 with 19,000 on it from Graypaul Ferrari & was built in 1981, so 1000 miles per year. NOT ENOUGH mileage! That did need work on the suspension & a top of engine rebuild, all from sitting about. I did 3,000 miles in my first 6months by going to Monaco / Lucerne etc in it. It played up thru lack of prior use.
Never buy a low mileage older Ferrari or any other high older performance car! All cars need driving! The more miles = less big bills!
Never buy a Mondial 3.4 t /355 / or Testarossa if you don’t have deep pockets full of cash as on servicing the engine sits on a sub-frame and is designed to allow the engine to easily be lowered out for servicing! Obviously, it costs more but accessibility is fantastic for any work needed! 355 are known to be costly to run, but are great to drive.
My decision to buy a 1988 3.2 Mondial was based on the knowledge of the 3.2 engine as also fitted to the 328 GTB or GTS. These are very good engines. The fuelling system is better than on the 3.4 t & in the 1988 car it has no catalytic converter, which by 1993 was needed, a new Cat cost £2790! so if you buy a Mondial 3.4 t, make it pre-1993, but do remember high serving bills at £2,500 each at least. The 3.4 had electro-magnetic rear shock-absorbers at £2,000 each plus vat. More cost & do check them on a low mileage car as sitting about destroys them! Some can be rebuilt.

Mine had an engine note change at 67,500 miles. It was a wonderful moment, as I was out on a scenic run with friends just recently, & my car suddenly became alive, it became faster, noticeably so! I reckon it was only just fully run in!
I had a run in it yesterday and the engine is quieter, but so sweet! I just want to keep on driving it! The 70,000 mile mark will come soon!! My quote for an annual service in three weeks time by Peter Higgins, is £300 plus vat! Peter is a time-served proper old Ferrari models, mechanic, who has been working on them since the 1970’s or before! A Ferrari Specialist who knows the older cars is best on older cars! But can of course still do newer cars too.
I try to buy high mileage Ferrari but service history is vital. My car has a huge folder for all of its life. All previous 14 owners! Yes 14 people have owned it, but the last owner had it for 5 years & it was looked after by Peter, so I bought it with confidence from Roger & Claire Collingwood of Kent High Performance cars, who are long time Ferrari Specialist dealers. They choose their stock wisely!
In the UK we are lucky to have some fantastic long-term Ferrari Specialist Dealers, who select good cars to sell, as they do not want to be faced with warranty work. They service the cars, valet them & research the history. You buy with that back-up as they don’t want to sell lemons!
Buy high mileage cars not garage queens. And high mileage means lower prices! A win - win situation! Drive the socks of it and love every fast mile!

Had exactly the same issue with a tx1 hackney cab 15 years ago line of sight with a phone mast and nothing,park two spaces before my house and bam dead cab roll it to my front door blocking view of mast a good half mile away and she fired straight up.

Golf gti mk2. Petrol forecourt. Wouldn't start. AA called. Patrolman pushed the car off the forecourt and down the road 20 metres.
Instant start. AA bloke said it happened several times a week at the same place!
Used to happen to Range Rovers a lot...
The car got towed a couple of hundred yards and it would start again..

Great video. Oh did the fuel hoses have been done in the 355?! There was a recall years ago but many werentm't done so it worth to have a look as we don't want another Tyler Hoovie 355.
More than 16 years of ownership of a 355F1, many trips of thousands of km done... and never a problem. Strict maintenance is a must on these cars. Nothing is more expensive than a cheap Ferrari !

I knew what you were going to say was the issue within the few seconds of watching & it’s not just Ferrari’s. There is an events place close to where I live and the same think happens there, it happened so many times to several different makes & models of cars.

The 355 is one of the best Ferraris...and if not the worst. Having an engine out issue occur on your first day of ownership , would have to be in my book your worst nightmare. My heart truly goes out to your friend ! A dealers warranty should have covered the entire cost. They are beautiful cars, but way too expensive to maintain and repair. 3-5 years comes around real fast...belts time again ! Edit: Spelling

I was just about to start raving how breathtaking beautiful that 355 is and how much i love this car, and then you came up with a shipload of issues. Now I'm so frustrated :(

I pretty sure the mobiliser issue was something that affected Subaru's as well. Always better getting a Porsche!

Venturi Atlantique 300's have same issue and will even cut out when passing such towers.

I have 5 kids all still at home. So it's thanks to blokes like you that I can experience most of the...experience without my wallet losing most of it's teeth and my wife not wanting to divorce me. Totally normal effected all cars and motorcycles in mid late 90’s when digital fones appeared was about 2(3 years of production not the manufacturers fault the immobilisers were produced before the fones the cars wavelength was altered in late 90’s to stop it. I had a motorcycle shop then totally common lot easier to push your bike down the road usually 3/4 hundred yards was enough I also had a 95 Xj jag the remote locking had the same problem
I wonder if there's a way to drill out the antenna for the old electronics, or ground out whatever is acting like a receiver that shouidn't. The cell phones used to be analog back in 355 days, very simple signal.
My dad's old P38 Rangie does this thing with phone masts!

i must be in the minority by a long way the first car I really loved from all the super hyper cars was the Muira but you know what the last few years am starting to appreciate two cars above ALL others the Healey 3000 n the Lotus elan all these super cars just look so similar n I really am staring to hate their looks never liked the E type either, I just Love the looks of the MGA the D type Jaguar the Healey n the Elan for sheer driving pleasures n looks too, now at my old age a Healey is my Perfect car way above any super car on earth, I believe 1 day old British sports car will be the most sought car around they look so much more real than anything else on earth
