    Had my F355 12 years now. Couple of times I went to trade it for a 911 and a Lambo but came back home in it. It's a keeper. That Engine, the noise, the open gate shift. Ferrari don't make em like that anymore. I've had the sticky switches etc refinished in mine. One of Ferrari's greatest.

    I was fortunate to get a ride in a then brand new CGT driven by Hurley Haywood at the 50th anniversary event that Car and Driver put on. it was fast and surreal.

    I've owned all the older BMW M cars and decided I need a change and almost bought my friends 1991 355 fly yellow spider. As I was pondering the maintenance cost, I had an opportunity to buy a 1996 Porsche 993 Turbo in speed yellow. Never owning a Porsche before decided on the 993 with the hopes the maintenance costs would be better. And I'm pretty sure they were, as the 993 was pretty much trouble free for eight years of ownership before I sold it. The 355 and the 993 turbo where almost the same price at the time of purchase. Now being eight years on, and me selling my 993 turbo, I more than doubled my money. I think I made the right decision. Great RUclips video about the two cars

    Great video. Your enthusiasm mirrors what I would feel driving that 355! Ferrari's are a very passionate sports car, and bring the passion out in sports car lovers. Porsche's are less visceral, and surely more practical. I guess if I could't have both, the Porsche would be my choice. And yes, Porsche did an awesome job capturing the essence of the 911 in an updated, and modern form with the 964. Updated for the 90's, and still pure 911! Both the 964, and the 355 are the epitome of what a Porsche, and Ferrari were intended to be ... Pure driving pleasure. Again, great video. I actually came across it looking at Porsche 964 videos. Now you have a new subscriber.

  • @calvincooley1074
    @calvincooley1074 7 лет назад +3

    To my recollection it was actually the Cayenne that saved Porsche.
    The 348 was kind of a turd but as you said, the 355 became the car that made the prancing horse run again.
    A Ferrari SUV. would be a dumb mistake as they have no need to make one. Besides that the Commandatore would not approve.

    • @Number27
      @Number27  7 лет назад

      You are absolutely right, the 996, Boxster and Cayenne in particular were the financial saviours of Porsche.. however my point is that the 964 was a turning point as it was then they finally accepted they had to keep developing the 911!

    The 355 is what got you the biggest smile so you should sell the 964 and get one - 964s are great but in my opinion they lack that pure 911 bark and driving engagement that earlier 911s had, perhaps because of all the refinements that went into it. If you'd compare a 911 2.7 to say a Ferrari 308 your biggest smile would be on the Porsche, guaranteed!

    My second time with you and this video. And perhaps you should watch this one again for yourself. If life is about being happy, then you need to do...or sell...whatever it takes to own a 355. At the end of the video you begin to try and talk yourself out of it, praising the 964 (which deserves everything you say about it)...but in the midst of praising the 964, you change the gears of the 355...and swoon in ecstasy. It is the car you belong in. it might change how you focus your videos...or not. But anything that can bring that much joy shouldn't be denied.

  • @dm5374
    @dm5374 5 лет назад

    I know this guy hates the Ferrari 348. I saw his video on the latter. But the 348 actually projected Ferrari into the future, and the 355 simply evolves from it. The doors are actually interchangeable.
    I know the 348 gets a lot of flak, but for a 30-year-old car to do 275 km/h and 0-100 in 5.6 seconds is not something to sneeze at. And besides, would you prefer a Nissan or a Ferrari?

    • @Number27
      @Number27  5 лет назад

      Not really true, I actually really liked the 348, because of its failing on many ways as it feels like and old style Ferrari, BUT it did not fare well technically against the competitors of that time. Ferrari recognised this and made several changes that improved handling on the later 348s

    • @gerardusch
      @gerardusch 5 лет назад +1

      @@Number27 Ferrari themselves eventually admitted the 348TB was rushed into production (for financial reasons) while still in development stage. It led to the 348 having severe straight line stability problems above 200 km/h, treacherous handling in fast corners with sudden brutal oversteer and an engine that had breathing problems above 5000 rpm's and failed to deliver the promised 300 HP. The car was only fully developed in 1994 with the 348 GTB version which rectified its flaws, although handling in long, fast corners was still suspect, with sudden oversteer that was almost impossible to control.

    It is not possible to compare a 964 manufactured at the end of the 80's with a 355 produced in the middle of the 90's, a 993 would have been more judicious. After all, the Porsche rescue was done in two acts. The first thanks to the Boxster, and especially the second with the Cayenne (which is and will never be a Porsche), unfortunately...

    I'd take the Porsche for overall quality...but mostly because the costs of the engine out service on the 355 will MURDER you even if you're a fairly wealthy individual. It's just a pain in the ass to have to reach in your pocket to shell out the exorbitant cost of doing business with Ferrari mechanics....I'll pass.

    • @Number27
      @Number27  6 лет назад +1

      Maintenance is very expensive no doubt... however most specialists can now do the dreaded belt service without taking the engine out. So that reduces the cost dramatically.

      In my experience 911s are less reliable and more expensive to run! Lots of myths out there about Ferrari running costs. If you want to roll them into a Ferrari main dealer every time something little goes wrong, yes you are going to suffer. But if you are prepared to get hands on, and find a trusted specialist indie they are much more sensible running costs wise

    A 355 as a daily driver is very possible...and that is what can justify the cost. I understand what you are saying about the Porsche...but in the 355, well I haven't seen you this happy except in the Bug eye Sprite. Of course this video is three years old. Has the 355 come closer to reality for you? If you have room for the 308 you have room for the 355.

  • @nigel.w

    F355 might be a response but it is neither seminal nor did it save Ferrari. And you, as many do, overlook the Dino, GT4 and Mondial's handling. The Mondial in particular is a great handling car and predates the F355 by a decade and a half. Also, the contemporary of the 964 is the 348. The 993 is the F355's contemporary. You want a great handling Ferrari with minimal maintenance and parts costs? Then, you should not overlook the Mondial 3.2. It benefits from a significant increase in power over its predecessors (similar to a 993), while retaining the relatively low maintenance costs that the T does away with. If you are prepared to live with higher maintenance costs, then by the time you're dealing with F355 prices, you might as well go for a 360 Modena manual. Personally, I think I'd even rather have a 348 over a 355, not because the 355 is not a great driving and great looking car, but because it is just so costly to maintain.

      As i've mentioned to others... You are absolutely right, the 996, Boxster and Cayenne in particular were the financial saviours of Porsche.. however my point is that the 964 was a turning point as it was the result of them finally accepting they had to keep developing the 911!

    One thing to bear in mind about owning a 355 is the timing belt change requires an engine out job and will run you back about $10,000 (£7-8,000?). Other than that it has always been the perfect exotic road car IMO. That +8k revving V8 has a sound like nothing else on earth!

    • @Number27
      @Number27  7 лет назад

      Yep, I totally agree. I think you can get away with £3-4K at an independent as some can now do it by just taking the fuel tanks out.. but still it's a lot of money on top of all the other maintenance and i think it is every 3 years!

    • @bispal
      @bispal 7 лет назад

      Not true. A HUGE myth mostly propagated by Doug Demuro. Most places take the fuel tank out now. In the UK an annual service is £600 and an additional £1,400 for a cam belt change (Just google Ferrari Centre Kent and look at fixed price service costs). So the total is £2,000+ vat and that is every 3 years. I have paid MORE for services on an MX5 (yes really). The F355 is really robust and very well built, its a properly engineered car and not a lot goes wrong with them. The alternators are weak and go every few years but its only £100 for a refurb + fitting. I wish people would stop listening to Doug Demuro he really talks utter crap.

    • @kman5711
      @kman5711 7 лет назад

      I actually heard this from a salesperson at a Ferrari dealership sir............ Yet it was gullible of me to listen to a salesperson probably looking to make a lot of $$$$$. Good to know there's a cheaper alternative, although I don't intend to ever own a 355 since the ship has sailed for them pricewise.

    I have owned and driven 8 Porsches over more than 40 years. I had a new 964 and I think it is the worst Porsche of them all. The 964 is heavy has a ponderous look and feel when driving. It has terrible tire/road noise and rear tire wear. The electrics fail often and sometime catch on fire. Mine had 3 alternators in 4 years. 4 factory recalls. AC system is weak even here in the NW and with R-12 the 1993 had R-134 which is a poorer refrigerant. Air bag warning, Heating system control failures, Bingo light coming on all the time. Lousy radio. Not very inspiring to drive. The coil over as posed to torsion bars make it a broadway cruiser not a sport car. My 1977 S is a way better car to drive and maintain. I also have a Boxster and I'm impressed and surprised with its handling and driving experience.

    So much crap in this video and written here. Mr Peter Schutz (who died about 3 days ago) made the famous line in the wall (chart wal) where the 911 would exist after 1981 and that 911 was the future. (He did this in 79/80 not in 88 or 89). Porsche took a loss on almost every 964 built (with the exception of maybe the Turbo, the Turbo 3.6 and more radicals RS versions) mainly because they we´re all hand built. That´s why in 93, Porsche hired some guys of the Toyota Adminstration to help them in the built process (mixing hand built with machines). With the 993, Porsche started to make a profit in every car built and also because of the great impact and reception the 993 generation made and had. With the Boxster, things got much better because of the shared tech between the Boxster and the then new 996. In 2002 Porsche was the most profitable car maker in the world even tough they selled much less cars than other mass productions car makers.. The Cayenne only made them more profitable. As far as Ferrari goes, what saved Ferrari (the company was in potencial colapse because of Enzo obcessions with racing and all the money put there) was a gentleman named Luca Di Montezemolo who made crucial changes in the company. It has nothing to do with the 355 or 348 or whatever car. Get your facts together before posting something or comment you Dumb Asses.

      Paulo Rangel the 964 was designed in early 86 and the decision to keep seriously re-developing the 911 was made in 1984. The 964 is significant for this reason, up till 84 Porsche’s support of the 911 was half hearted. While it is true that Di Montezomolo shook up Ferrari the 355 was the fist result of his efforts and a turning point for Ferrari as I mention in the video. Thanks for your constructive and totally incorrect criticism and keep watching the videos!

    • @paulorangel8404
      @paulorangel8404 7 лет назад

      LOL. You´re right he 964 was significant! For almost making Porsche go bankrupt!!! In 1981 the future of the 911 was sealed (not 84, 86 or the 964). To be the top car and the future of the company. The only decision made in 1986 was that the 964 (and future generations of the 911) would be only Carrera´s. No Turbos. That´s why the 964 Turbo had the same engine as the 930. Officially there was no time to make the new turbo with the 3.6 engine and in someway that was truth but the real truth was that the company spent a lot money on the project 969 (Porsche 969 google it by the way if you dont know the car wish is a safe bet) and it was cancelled at the last minute. That´s why there was not time. That story on yoube Porsche Secrets about the 965 being just a study it´s bull. Nobody makes 13 prototypes just for a study and i (me and most Porsche connoisseurs) know and saw lots of of spy pics of the 969 in orange color pretty much in late development stage). Again, google it. As far as Luca goes., Luca entered Ferrari in early 1991 and Ferrari returned to profits in late 1993 (the F355 was not even introduced). Again i have to do all the work here. GOOGLE IT FERRARI 90´S NET REVENUE. Thank you, Bye!
