I was wearing hearing protection/radio headphones while mowing grass next to a 4 lane highway. I heard what I thought was a low flying jet aircraft and looked up from the grass. What I saw was a Ferrari 355 in the passing lane going between 120mph and 150mph passing the other cars like they were standing still. My first assumption was correct,, it was a low flying jet aircraft.

I noticed that Ferrari maintains the same styling of its mid-engined V8 model for two generations at a time:
    308 and 328
    348 and 355
    360 and 430
    458 and 488
The latter generation borrows the same basic shape and design of the previous generation that it's been paired with. It explains why, for example, the 488 looks so similar to the 458, and why the 355 has a comparable shape to the 348, and so on.
We won't see a haul over in styling until the successor of the 488 comes out.

The F355 is essentially a MUCH improved and modernised 348... In other words, they didn't start with a clean slate, but the car was different enough to be distinguishable from its predecessor. The 308 and 328 are pretty much the same car, albeit, the 328 has a larger engine and some minor styling tweaks.

The f355 was the last of the analog Ferrari's. After this they were drive by wire. This was also the absolute last of this classic Italian design language. The 360 looks completely different. This is also the first production Ferrari to introduce the F1 style flappy paddle shifters. I'm a big Clarkson fan. Thanks.

    • @xXxXcrosbykidXxXx

The 355 is one of my all time favorites. Being that it is actually relatively affordable for a middle class person but it brigs you everything you can ask for out of a Ferrari (albeit on a slightly lesser, slower scale). But id have to say 348 > 355 > 458 in the way of engine sound. As they get newer the sound just get more and more uniform. The 458's sound great, but under hard acceleration they just make a steady hum until redline where the pitch gets higher as it revs out but the actual sound is the same boring hum. The older cars werent quite so tame, they screamed and sang rather than steadily humming. Much more of a "raw" sound. They made clanks and bangs when the dogbox shifts, accompanied by crackles and pops from the fuel in the exhaust. They would burble and shake at low revs and the sound you could make at any speed with the clutch and the throttle in those older cars was mesmerizing.
To be fair the new cars only sound "boring" because every little mechanical detail is properly sorted and theres nothing out of line to make any strange noises. But for that reason, i think there will always be a spot in people hearts for old Carb'd monsters. Not only do you get more sound but with carbs you get the smell, you even get the taste lol. An old carb'd ferrari v8 or even an old 240z with the original dual carb i6 would be my dream weekend car. The just sound so much more lively than any direct injection car out there.

I'll never forget the day I heard a 355 Challenge running. I was a car groomer as a teenager working at Ferrari. Minimum wage for maximum fun and seeing and speaking with the some really wealthy people. Of course none of them could care less about the lanky little boy washing cars but I was also then used to loud cars, all day everyday....until one afternoon something arrived.
It was a present to the sales manager from Ferrari themselves. He had gone to Italy from New Zealand on business and drove a 355 Challenge on the Ferrari track. He loved it so much they sent it to New Zealand as a gift for being a great dealership manager.
Now at this time we were selling 360s and 430s, but my god! At idle I clearly remember that it was shaking the air inside my lungs, I've never since heard a car that would actually vibrate my internals just idling.
The sales manager being a salesman at heart sold it a week later. The customer wanted it road spec so out came the roll cage etc.
Even at 17 I remember thinking that if Ferrari gifted me a car with such pride in my work id be forever thankful and never sell it.

I once entered a competition where 10 statements about Ferrari had to be put into order of importance. In case there was a tie, entrants had to complete a sentence beginning with ‘I’d like to drive a Ferrari because …..’ using no more than 16 words. I didn’t win the competition because my order of importance was different to the panel that chose the order of importance but Jeremy Clarkson did use my winning sentence in one of his Top Gear reviews. My sentence was
‘I’d like to drive a Ferrari because everyone would know I had arrived before I’d even set off’.

And they aren't scary like a quick muscle car or something, it just invites you to go faster and faster and faster... which is a problem since the speedo is absolutely tiny.

I keep coming back to this absolute gem. It's signature Clarkson and shows perfectly why he is the greatest presenter of a car show ever, despite him having no clue of mechanics! 5 valves per cylinder don't make an engine rev higher, but he's allowed to not know anything, his enthusiasm is making up for it!

@@SirRobbins Thats 100% false. The cheapest Ferrari you can buy (a Mondial T) is still 40k for a good working one. You can import a TT RHD Mk4 for only 25k and it will have low miles. Nice collector 100 mile examples might go for expensive amounts at auctions with drunk buyers with too much money, but in general a clean Mk4 TT 6 speed Getrag goes for 50-60k, good luck finding an F355 that works well for that money. Please don't spread false information.

well this is considered one of the most reliable ferrari's ever made, it was made at the begining of when supercars became actual everyday cars with some practicality. so its actually a pretty nice car. this and the F40 are the only ferraris i would consider owning if i came into alot of money.
but also, servicing these cars doesn't cost a whole lot... servicing these cars by genuine ferrari mechanics does however.. because they know you will pay to not have an idiot hick work on your baby. xD

Great video. Buying your first Ferrari is a great experience. In fact, I think that it is just as much about the buying process as it is about owning the car. It is to be savored. You must suspend reality and just give yourself to it. You have to disregard the naysayers about how much it costs to buy and run - because they are right. It is irresponsible and a more than a bit excessive. But It is just one of those things you have to take on pure passion. And it is worth every penny.

Its looks don't do it for me like a 458 but I'd probably have more fun in this on regular/canyon roads over the 458 and defenetly the 488. Being able to ring out more of the prancing horse's power in tight corners, listening to that exquisite soundtrack screem to 8500rpm (who wants a radio in this anyways?) with 3 pedals and at a lighter weight would be sublime.
