I have owned a 355 for 12 years. I can say that in my case the "almost" issues are greatly exaggerated. Most of these cars do less than 3000 miles per year. You can absolutely go 7 years between engine out services. Also, the valve guide are not 100% failure. there are many 355's (including mine) that have the original valve guides without any indication of needing replacement. If you do need them replaced, you piggy back that on an engine out service and save a lot of dough. I proactively replaced my headers at a cost of $3K. Lastly, my independent Ferrari mechanic charges me $4500 for the engine out service. Those are real numbers from an actual owner. Treat the car right, and it will in return. Drive it, it needs it. When they sit for long periods of time, they tend to have issues. By the way, I'm not some rich guy. These cars are very affordable. Get one before the prices spike.
most f355 do explode but there are many f355's that didn't go to that expensive maintenance and cost a little to run. Tyler Hoover's ferrari is one of those unlucky ones. he also did a mistake picking it up as the first owner honestly said to him that it had engine problems and there is a probability of explosion ...the first owner actually said to him also that he just called a tow truck and towed it...which if he did run it at that time ... it had a huge probability of bursting into flames.....i wished that parker nirenstein (Vehicle Virgins) do that instead of listening to his trusty mechanic that the car was safe to run
There are 2 reasons why I hate Ferrari. 1) they burst into flames. 2) they're too expensive for what it is. IE: California, laferrari,599, f12 berlinetta, 458, 488.
@@RustyDog41 Hiw hard is it to just replace the fuel line and relocate it? Bearing in mind that it would destroy the original state of the vehicle and thus probably devalue it tremendously.
One time in Orlando Florida about 2003, I was sitting at a stoplight waiting for it to turn green. X3MK0218 - Owning a Ferrari is better for the following reasons: You build up a bond with it. You can take it for a drive whenever you want to, permitting the conditions are right. You get to look at it in the garage. If you are wealthy enough to own a Ferrari, you can afford the maintenance.
When you own one, you can go into the garage and stare at it anytime. You don't need to reserve it, and you have no limitations on what you can do with the car. Whether full ownership is worth the maintenance hassle and costs, depends on what the person can afford and is willing to put up with.

Very nice video. I have had a 355 spider for 10 years. it is a wonderful car to look at and drive. It is a fun car for me and I have only put 5000 miles on it since I bought it and it now has 32000 on it. It is a 1999 and as for maintenance, I had the belt service done last year for the first time in the car's history. I always drove it carefully and never extreme and if you are not taking it to the track every weekend I think most 355 owners will tell you that the 3 year 5000 mile belt change is not necessary. If you drive it like a normal car and maybe once in a while drive fast on the open road 10 years or 10000 miles before belt change should be fine. This would give you an average cost of $1000 a year plus the occasional o2 sensor or other incidentals. I have been fortunate and have had no major issues since I owned the car except a radiator fan coming loose and scoring the radiator core. After much aggravation of removing the damaged radiator and taking it to the radiator shop, the radiator repair was $45 and I bought 2 new electric fans for the radiators and put them in myself for $75 each. if you are interested in one of these cars being able to do simple repairs like this radiator will save you a lot on the maintenance cost of the car.
My older brother was once loaned an F355 (just like this one) by his boss. Being 17 years old and a huge car nut, I was the first person my brother came to with the car. I bought one of these three years ago from the original owner with only 18K miles. He kept all the receipts and I totaled them up to be just under $130K. Belt services, valve guide replacements, new convertible top, new leather seat covers, etc. It still gave me an intermittent "Slow Down" light that was most likely due to an exhaust ECU that I never got around to. I had it for a couple of years and sold it before it left me homeless. It, by far, had the most glorious sound at 8500 RPM. I replaced it with an F430 which is way faster and has much lower maintenance (no cam belts). It just doesn't sound as good. I do miss that car though!

@@humanbeing2420 It doesn't beep at you with the passenger's side door. My dad has one, I've gotten in and out of it before with the engine running and it was fine.
Couple of notes. The engine has some maintenance and reliability issues probably because it was so extreme for its time. It made 380 bhp from 3.5 liters, while the Testarossa of a bit earlier time made the same hp from 5 liters. A major assist in achieving that was using 5 valves per cylinder to fuel it at the extremely high 8500 rpm limit in order to make the power it did. That also was a major cause of its mechanical/maintenance/reliability issues. Especially, the valve guide issue. Doug finds pop-up headlights dated and odd and always comments on them. However, they allowed the front hoods to be very low in cars like this and that low front hood really contributes to the "go-kart" feel and sensation when driving cars with pop-up lights. It was a way fro manufacturers to meet the headlight-related height regulations while keeping the hood so low. Today, there are many more regulations regarding the front end that make it impossible to use pop-ups and have a low hood. All cars have to have relatively high, stubby front ends as a result, which eliminates that pure "go-kart" thing once and for all. The F355 is a great driver's car. No doubt about it. It was the last of the old school baby Ferrari's that started with the Dino's and came before the much more modern 360 Modena's. It was the transition car for Montezemolo, who took over running Ferrari while the 355 was in gestation. It is a very desirable car, but I am not sure it's styling is much more than a great updating of the bland-looking 348's, which are terrible cars to drive.
Pop up headlights don't make the hood lower, mid engine layouts make the hood lower! The Diablo & NSX still had the same hood slope after they got rid of the pop up lights, you're just talking out of your ass
My favorite Ferrari I drove when I was a Ferrari salesman in the early 90's was a 1966 330 GTC. 300hp with intake noise & exhaust note that was truly a symphony. I agree with you about horsepower. It's more enjoyable if you have to use skill to drive through corners to keep speed versus just point & shoot. The 328 was a very nice driver too.
When the top of the GTS is RED, it has exactly the same lines as the Berlinetta - and that`s the beauty. In reality that's great, you can feel and hear the engine so much better without top than in the berlinetta. There the sound is deeper an much filtered. In my garage the top of my 355 GTS is mostly UP - to use the beauty TOPLESS. And that you can never do with a berlinetta !!! You get the MAXIMUM FEELING of the 355 without top !!
Your reviews are great, they are the closest thing to owning or driving these cars most of us will ever get. All the little details about where the boot release is or the manual, so good and no one else does that.
Luca di Montezemolo (then CEO of Ferrari) drove the 355 to work calling it his "go-kart" during the development of the 360 Modena, which was to be everything the 355 was not - tall ppl could fit in it, it had room for a golf bag behind the seats, it didn't leak. I have a special fondness for the 355 as 'last of an era' but I remember the first 360 showing up in a NJ dealership and seeing one on the Turnpike and it blew the 355 away styling-wise. Manual gearboxes w/ the H-gate and external shift knobs went on another 10 years so it's nonsense that the 355 was the last of any of that, you just had to seek it out or ask for it.
I got to drive one of these, and agree with everything here. Drove a 599 soon after and it was a joke compared to the 355 (even though being almost twice as fast). Don't forget about the solid cams, that has a lot to do with it being the best sounding motor I've ever heard.
***** Are you not familiar with the English and American way of spelling words? This really makes you look dumb, trying to correct someone on a correct spelling. Same with color and colour.
It saddens me that for the briefest of moments, cars like this seemed within reach. Now that I'm finally reaching a level in my life that I could potentially afford one of these, they suddenly become desirable and jump in value. Likely to only go further up in value and further from my reach... :c
NsKrewtable Keep the faith! The 355 is my all time favorite car (Well maybe behind only the Mc F1 and LP400 Countach) and so I feel your pain in trying to aqquire one! You have to remember there was actually a good few years where they were "affordable", 355s lost around half their original value and they stayed at that level for around 5 years. The current bull market is insane and it's always impossible to predict the future but history would suggest it wont last forever and it seems to be running out of puff in the last year. A lot of the adverts you see are just total chancers trying to make a tidy profit on a car they've owned for a while. But how many are actually selling at those levels? Some ARE but I'm noticing a lot of cars at the moment that seem to stick around in the classifieds for a long time. It's not a co-incidence 355s went up just as you got to that financial level in your life. I was chatting to a dealer recently and they pointed out how the younger generations don't really care about the older stuff, the cars that have appreciated are the ones that were on the walls of guys growing up in the 80s and 90s who have recently got wealthier. The 355 seems to have topped out at the entrance point of 458s, hopefully 458 prices will keep the 355 from ever getting too insane. Other cars like the 570s and the Hurrican will hopefully help to keep prices down too. Also going back to the market at the moment, it will surley come down again, it always has done in the past! A lot of people are buying cars now as investments and a lot of those will jump ship when the market plateaus out and they see there's better places to put their money
NsKrewtable i get what u’re sayin. I feel the same way too. But the gallardos are relatively cheap and also some of the 360 modenas. U will get there eventually. Dont worry :)
They were always very expensive to repair and maintain however. But being a high-performance car, and a Ferrari no less, the 355 is prone to market bubbles. Fueled by trends among the wealthy to own older sports cars of a certain pedigree. Much like has occurred with the Porsche 993 Turbo, and E30 BMW M3, which were once just old cars are now through the roof on market value, but they may not remain so forever... The 355 is a fine car, but it's not the F40 after all.
You might yet, Tavarish is going to rebuild it once he finishes 13 and a half other cars which may take him 16 years but hey thats a lot of YT videos..
Agree with many of dougs comments on the F355 Berlinetta..... not sure the running costs are totally correct. Here in the UK, indie specialists charge £1200-1500 for an engine out belt service and standard annual service are frequently offered on a fixed price around £700. Compared to running a higher end german luxo box, it seems quite good value, especially as prices continue to rise.
Friend of mine has this model and let me drive it. I was surprised how easy it was to drive it and feel comfortable handling it fron the very start. From a pure look point of view, the 308 range was the best for me, the interior with those metallic levers is beautiful, so much character cause not this banal plastic buttons, which came with the 328. And the exterior with this conic air intake in the doors...gosh. lastly i always found the motor cover so beautiful, stands out so much
I have driven one and modern Ferraris have a silly f1 gearbox making them very hard to park, for me this is the best ferrari ever, its the purists choice
Timbuck2 It's NOT too expensive to maintain long term, if you've got the moola... and more people than ever before do. That wouldn't include me, or him, either, by his own words (yet), but it's certainly not impossible. For me, the question must be, is it worth it? One could own and run, and maintain, half a dozen pretty nice sports cars for what this one costs to buy and keep... Which is why I don't even THINK about Ferraris, much.
Damn Doug! Every video Doug makes, takes all these obtainable classics and makes them sooo desirable I’m worried they’ll appreciate beyond the reach of us mere mortals
WHAT A PLEASURE TO SEE A SPORTS CAR WITH NO BELLS, WHISTLES, BANGS, POPS, BACKFIRES, SUPER POPS ETC ETC ETC. Just pure adrenaline / Pleasure / Fun / Elegance.
True story here: When I was about 12 my dad took me to Ferrari of Atlanta to drool. He wandered off with a salesman and they left me to daydream and enjoy the Ferraris. No one else was there and it was so quiet I had to gently close the doors of the cars to not feel like someone was going to go "SHHHHHH!!!". The 355, 456, and 550s were all in the showroom and I was drawn to the red 355. I finally figured out how to get inside the car but I had a problem. Once in and the door shut I had no idea how to get out of the car. So there I was trapped in a Ferrari at the age of 12 for about 10 minutes until I finally figured out the inside door handle. Child proof they had made it (almost).
Actually the 87 MKIII Toyota Supra came with a "Sport" mode and "Normal" mode button on the cener console that formed or softened the suspension. Probably THE earliest sport modes in a car, @Doug DeMuro
I love the silhouette of this car. The profile, the roofline slope into the hood and the back windshield is so perfect and flowing despite being so 90s. One day. ONE DAY.
The shape, it’s not the wedge shape of the 80s and not the less aggressive (and more stylish) round shape of the 2000s, it’s just perfect, it’s............ a Lotus Esprit
Good video, I too always liked the 355 but for me I would go with the Spyder in Fly yellow. The Spyder to me looks better and with the roof down you get to hear the exhaust sound even better.
Since someone have mentioned the camera, I better chime in...! Yes, the camera is quite old... And I think it'd be great if he replace it with a 360 Degree one...! I find it rather weird that all I see is the driver all the time and just a quick few second glimpse of the road and the terrain... 360 would be GREAT...!

1:00 Agree 100%. It's an absolutely gorgeous, perfectly shaped road bullet. It's pure sexiness. I had the privilege of driving one of these once and it's an experience that's vividly burned into my memory
The F355 is not as expensive as it seems to be. although it is more expensive than normal, just not as the video proposes. The engine out is easy to do. it was actually designed to be done that way and it comes out rather easily. where I live they charge around 4k for the work on one of these. the belts service is around every 5 yrs if you drive it regularly. valves had defects in the early production ones but not as much in later ones. either way its more expensive than say a Toyota or ford. just not as expensive as a McLaren.
Ive driven the 360 with gated shift. I know how you feel its the perfect and most precise way to change gears. Very satisfying visceral and mechanical feel. I dont know why every manual car doesnt have this.

this car could be release in 2023 and it would be beautiful. This is a BEAUTIFUL car.
Did... did you forget to promote your blog? D:
Good catch.
Lee Nolan Doug forgot it a few videos back too.

The most beautiful Ferrari ever made in my opinion.
F40 I think or enzo
I really like the 360.
Check out the 50’s, 60’s racers from Ferrari… no match
One of my favourite all time cars
Ok, Doug
Mine too still looks good today plus the stick shift
Cheap as well
Same here gated shifter 😍
@@stephendoley1829 u not scared of that shi exploding ? I know if i had this it would explode because I’d be racing people fr
man such a beautiful and simple interior
My Audi A4 does the same thing with the door open. It also has a similar key to the Gallardo. I have a supercar.
Joshua Diaz my Volkswagen Jetta is faster than the Aston Martin Cygnet, does that mean I have a super car? :O

I just saw one today, and came home to rewatch this. The one I saw was black on black, absolutely beautiful.
That little cubby is where your handgun goes.
I remember that when I was a teenager that car was featured in the latest James Bond film "Golden Eye" Wow. It seems ages ago.
Great part james bond in the aston martin racing xenia in the ferrari classic
When the top of the GTS is RED, it has exactly the same lines as the Berlinetta - and that`s the beauty. In reality that's great, you can feel and hear the engine so much better without top than in the berlinetta. There the sound is deeper an much filtered. In my garage the top of my 355 GTS is mostly UP - to use the beauty TOPLESS. And that you can never do with a berlinetta !!! You get the MAXIMUM FEELING of the 355 without top !!
This guy owns one lol
+Toni R
You said it all!
The GTS is quite better than the normal Berlinetta version!
I was wondering why the gts wasn’t better cuz of targa with same lines
Mod Grip
😂
It's manual removal process is annoying but I agree
The f355 is my favorite Ferrari
J Green I like it too, but if I had a choice (I don't), I'd prefer an F40,
Ahaan! 😘
Same
355 for manual and 458 for paddle. (My favorite 2)
The reason why I bought an mr2.poor man's Ferrari
355's look better in Red...whereas the 550 looked better in Titanium Grigio...!!! 😁❤👍
Your reviews are great, they are the closest thing to owning or driving these cars most of us will ever get. All the little details about where the boot release is or the manual, so good and no one else does that.
Legend has it that Doug once had his mouth shut for a whole 15 seconds!
If I had a dollar for every time he said "Quirk" in all his videos, I'd be able to buy this car..
They sell for less than a 5 series.
Dude, if you had that many dollars, you'd have enough to buy a continent.
I got to drive one of these, and agree with everything here. Drove a 599 soon after and it was a joke compared to the 355 (even though being almost twice as fast). Don't forget about the solid cams, that has a lot to do with it being the best sounding motor I've ever heard.

Rent one.
That's what happened to me with 80's 911's.
Looks great, until it explodes...
RIP Tyler Hoover's Ferrari
Yep. I saw that car in person multiple times before and after hoovie bought it and now I wont see it again
@@supercarsofwichita9485 That's a shame. I guess that's the kind of thing that you can't always see coming in that kind of car.
You might yet, Tavarish is going to rebuild it once he finishes 13 and a half other cars which may take him 16 years but hey thats a lot of YT videos..
Parker did it
It didn't have the recall done and his mechanic should've known that.
And the exterior with this conic air intake in the doors...gosh. lastly i always found the motor cover so beautiful, stands out so much
Aaaaaaaand Hoovie just bought one.
Aaaaaaand it's gone.
:D You made me lough so hard for no reason
Mahmood Y.H aaaaaaaaand he’s stripped out the interior
Aaaaaaaaaaaaand it's sitting simply 😂😂
Those interiors 😍
I have driven one and modern Ferraris have a silly f1 gearbox making them very hard to park, for me this is the best ferrari ever, its the purists choice
Perfect! Beautiful! Gated shifter is magic!
Lloyd : wanna hear the most anoying sound in the world?
Opens 355 door.
Okay, My favorite Ferrari of all time in my opinion. Like he said, amazing lines, great interiour. For me the best looks :D
Not so. I'll keep my 328.
Eh, f40 is the best but I love the 458 speciale aswell...
So, the main complaint here is that this 355 is too expensive to maintain long term... So it's like a gorgeous Italian woman; hit it and quit it. LOL.
Well, yes.... That was a great example
Yup lol
Temp you win
Timbuck2 It's NOT too expensive to maintain long term, if you've got the moola... and more people than ever before do. That wouldn't include me, or him, either, by his own words (yet), but it's certainly not impossible. For me, the question must be, is it worth it? One could own and run, and maintain, half a dozen pretty nice sports cars for what this one costs to buy and keep... Which is why I don't even THINK about Ferraris, much.
Content Cop on Gayson Genova - Maybe find a friend who owns one and have a few hot flings with it on the weekends when he is out of town?
Damn Doug! Every video Doug makes, takes all these obtainable classics and makes them sooo desirable I’m worried they’ll appreciate beyond the reach of us mere mortals
I find the F355 to be the most beautiful car ever.
Still one of the most gorgeous cars ever made.
Love the overall shape ,and interior is beautiful simplicity😀
Doug, your vids are by far some the best auto explainers on youtube.

YES PLEASE! I would LOVE that! :D

saiyan ninjawarriorz Yes! please!
saiyan ninjawarriorz You are the 🐐...
One of the most beautiful cars ever. Always thought that. It’s actually somewhat affordable minus the hellacious maintenance costs.
Actually the 87 MKIII Toyota Supra came with a "Sport" mode and "Normal" mode button on the cener console that formed or softened the suspension. Probably THE earliest sport modes in a car, @Doug DeMuro
this looks like the quintessential Ferrari. Nothing over the top like the Enzo or F50, just straight up Ferrari
they also look quite good in yellow (like in the movie 'The Rock' with Nicolas Cage)
I know this car from the F355 Challenge Video Game
SEEEEEEGAAAAAAAAA
the DC version?
Good video, I too always liked the 355 but for me I would go with the Spyder in Fly yellow. The Spyder to me looks better and with the roof down you get to hear the exhaust sound even better.
“It doesn’t have an off button. It just says STOP!!!!”
when are you going to replace your in car camera?... the buzzing has been going on for ages.
B Fuller the buzzing stops when Doug stops speaking
B Fuller that's just a wasp. And when the wasp has a son that's another one. It seems to travel around with Doug. And keeps having sons. All those little waspies living in his jumper.
These cars still give me butterflies to this day. The looks , the sounds, ugh it’s just perfect
You look exactly like junior Jay Leno!
Patty Mills Quentin Tarantino!

@@tommonaghan111 oh never mind. It was another one of his videos that I told him that. I think it's the NSX video that I told him he looks like QT.

My favourite Ferrari is the 575 Maranello. That is pure beauty and sound
you want the original, mate, the 550 :) It's my favourite too
The 550 / 575 is amazing.
550 better drivers car , also the lamest sounding v12 ever from ferrari
Agreed, this was the best looking out of all Ferraris you could see in the real world! I liked the F50 for its crazy front and rear wing but that is a rare sight and just aesthetically...this is the one!
So what I got out of this: it would be a great car to rent but not own.
Shots fired jr garage. Automatic
Sometime I enjoy the gleeful satisfaction Doug gets from locking/unlocking the doors.
The Quentin Tarantino of car reviewers! :D
You know you've made it when you have a "favorite" Ferrari.
I do love this op ed style where its like the classic journalism style. I can almost feel it written on the pages of a printed newspaper. Love it!
It was my favourite Ferrari as well - at least the way it looks.
And it had a real manual transmission, not that pussy DSG shit they use today
My dream car when I was a teen!
One of my most favorite Doug DeMuro episodes 👍🏻
I just saw this car today. Had a really cool engine sound
Last stunning Ferrari made although the F430 was very nice.
I prefer the colour red on the 90s cars. Don't know why they changed that.
1:00 Agree 100%. It's an absolutely gorgeous, perfectly shaped road bullet. It's pure sexiness.
I had the privilege of driving one of these once and it's an experience that's vividly burned into my memory
In Goldeneye 007, Xenia Onatopp races Bond's Aston Martin....
" This Car is in fact the fullest definition of your modern day FEMALE "
@spudnic88 Likely yes, until you throw 💰 at it, and it suddenly works again.
I love ❤️ the 355
It still looks amazing 25 years later...🙂🔝👌
Lol this got recommended to me after I watched the Hoovie's video when his 355 got a bit spicy!
When Ferrari have up manual transmission, they have up some of Enzo 's soul, that's for sure!
Had one just like it. Had a red convertible top black interior. Tubi exhaust. Great car. Solid as a rock.
What a car, one of my favorites as as well.
