In the late 90’s I was wearing hearing protection while mowing the lawn of a commercial storage facility. I heard the roaring sound of what I thought was a jet aircraft and I looked up from the lawn only to see a red Ferrari 355 eastbound on the nearby 4 lane divided highway. The 355 was in the left lane passing other cars as if they were standing still. I’m guessing it was going at least 120mph in what was at that time a 60mph zone.

When you mentioned Pininfarina, it took me back to 1981 when I was a lad of 25 years. I had the opportunity to acquire a brand new 1981 Fiat Spider 2000. It had both the Fiat badge as well as the Pininfarina badge. My friend at the time said this is the same coach builder for Ferrari. A little later Pininfarina produced basically the same car without the Fiat badge for a lot more money. Good overview - I agree with almost all of it. "It isn't a Porsche" is pretty much the reason I got a 355 - not because I dislike Porsches, I have several, but because of variety. And also the steering is pretty weak - both in terms of feel and steering wheel angle... And yes, they do have maintenance issues all the time - and not just the belt changes, headers and guides - I have had damper actuator issues, HVAC issues, fuel distribution and sensor issues. Overall, I probably do 2-3X more maintenance on my one F355 as I do on my 5 Porsches and 1 Aston Martin combined... But none of it has been terrible or expensive, just a lot of little things. If that doesn't scare you, well, if you have the means, I highly recommend it.

I owned a yellow 348 TB for about 16 years. I eventually traded for an 08 F430 spider which I absolutely love. HOWEVER, that 348 ran like a dream, and sounded fantastic. Never gave me problems, other than that damn engine out situation. With the 430 I’m always thinking “please, nothing go wrong”.
2nd to the F40? Jesus man it’s a POS in terms of actual performance, I don’t get why people like it. The F40, F50, Enzo, California, F430, 812 GTA….all of em crush this dumb thing
Thank you! I've waited years for you to review my top 3 and my very favorite childhood car. People bash this car, but I love it. It does have an "in-between" eras steering issue, but I have truly always loved driving this car regardless of the problems. The Spider is a symphony in canyons, but the GTS is beautiful from every angle. Much much thanks for this review, I've waited a long time.
To me this is the best looking car Ferrari ever produced. It’s aged so well. I remember it when it came out, it’s never been less than stunning, I don’t think it ever will be, it looks refined, fast and exotic, it is visually, essentially, perfect.
No, you can't have everything when it comes to a Ferrari of that generation. That said, the Doug Score highlights another vehicle that does give you gorgeous looks (IMHO) and is more reliable and easy to own. That is the Acura NSX, which I would take over a 355 every day of the week and twice on Sunday...as they say.
The engine doesn’t have to come for the cam belt replacement. The easier alternative method is to remove the fuel tank, and that provides the space needed to access the cam belts. The motor only needs to be lifted slightly with a floor jack (if you’re doing the service with the car on jack stands), or a screw jack (if the car is on a car lift) to allow clearance over the metal cross brace to fit a socket onto the crank pulley bolt.
I've recently been wondering if in reality the 348 would be the one to have for the steering and chassis feedback compared to the 355, but this is a good reminder of just how gorgeous the 355 is. It must be possible to replicate the 348's steering in this because the size and weight are similar/identical and front end (at least) geometry probably no different. Also, maybe...some lovely passive suspension setup but that would depend on how the 355 feels, it might already be great. I will never know! But thanks Doug, this love letter of a video has put the 355 back in strong contention for my fantasy garage!
The 355 was available with a manual rack but almost nobody ordered it that way. The steering on a 355 is weighted perfectly when driven hard imo, I wouldn't change it. The chassis is stiffer than a 348... The real problems with a 355 are the seating position and the brakes which are not up to handling modern rubber. Otherwise it's near perfect.
Great cars. One of the best looking Ferrari's, great noise, decent performance, fine handling but agree with Doug about the steering lacking feel which I found when hiring a 355 for a weekend 20 years ago. And that air-bag steering wheel is just nasty compared to the early 355's without the airbag.
I want fararri to make a bare bones electric 348 tbh😂 id get one if it handles well in the city and looks almost exactly like the original car. Looks like fun
Brilliant review.....This guy is absolutely spot on in his appraisal of the F355. Never was a fan of the drop-top. It lost some of the beautiful Pininfarina coupe styling. I bought a white one to replace my white Testarossa (which I kept for my collection). I loved every minute of it, except the maintenance. It was so labour-intensive (Ferrari admit that) that I must have spent a lot more than the purchase price on maintenance throughout the years! It was ludicrous!! They sorted that out with the F430 onwards, thankfully. I didn't replace it till I got a 458 (white again). All the others inbetween just didn't give me the Fizz. It's just so beautiful! Yes, it's slow, not particularly good handling and the steering and brakes not much better than my 1967 330 GTS, but that's not the point! It was the smile on my face!😊 I still get in it and drive it on special occasions, and the looks I get is just priceless. Only my Testarossa gets more attention. So I recommend, if you can, definitely buy one......only have very deep pockets to keep it going!
Jeremy Clarkson bought a 355 GTS, and his main complaint with the model is the middle roof squeaks like crazy when it's in place, to the point that Ferrari suggested that you wipe petroleum jelly on the ends of it to make it stop making noise. Imagine that; telling their owners they have to apply vaseline to their beautiful sports car to make it stop making annoying noises. Great engineering there.
A lot of T-Top cars are that way. I wouldn’t care I would do it for the Ferrari . Better than having a boring Toyota or Tesla that doesn’t squeak. I buy cars for there looks and their engines and sounds. Nothing else! 🇮🇹
That's just how Italian cars are. What are you going to do, not buy a Ferrari because you have to put two drops of Vaseline on the corners of the roof every few months? That's part of the experience.
i wish i could afford one of these it's one of my all time favorite ferraris. and even if i could afford the actual car idk if i could handle the maintenance
Man, the 355s were SUCH good-looking cars. I don't even like red cars, but it works for Ferraris. A black-on-tan car would be even more wildly beautiful, but this thing is GORGEOUS even how it is.
Can I just say something? I’m a designer, and I think the un-hidden keyhole on a Ferrari or any sports/supercar is COOL; it exudes swagger to be able to physically unlock your Ferrari with a metal key, plus I think it’s been enough time removed from mandatory keyholes that they can be more of a novelty now
I can't tell if Doug genuinely loves this car more than other cars or he's trying to sell it, I swear he wasn't this excited about 2 million dollar hypercars
IMO - most 7 figure hyper cars are far less interesting. There’s plenty of enthusiasts that have at least a degree of indifference about that class of car.
355 are not unreliable, they are just poorly maintained!! As her maintenance is complicated, there are rarely any with well-maintained!! Curiosity, the first European units made in 94, have more hp than those made later, about 400hp, they are even faster than the normal 360
I also agree this is one of the best looking exotic sports cars ever made, out of all manufacturers. It’s such a gorgeous, streamlined design, always loved the 355’s looks 👌🏻👌🏻
I’ll probably be slammed by this but this car is the perfect girlfriend analogy: beautiful and emotional but temperamental and expensive at the same time 😂 but a awesome experience nonetheless. #1 car on my bucket list to drive/own. Love it! ❤
My then cousin-in-law drove for Repsol/Ferrari in the 1994 24 Hrs. of Le Mans. Ferrari had promised its drivers each an F355 if they finished the race (something Ferrari had lately had trouble with), and they did. His brand-new F355 is still the only Ferrari I've ever been in: he gave me a ride around the outskirts of Sanlúcar de Barrameda in southern Spain shortly after he'd taken delivery. He couldn't really open the taps as it was still in its break-in period, but super-cool nevertheless. His was the coupe and I think even more beautiful than the spider... He totaled it on a French autopiste maybe a year later: all gone.
Yes. I should clarify and say it was totaled: apparently a big truck failed to see him and smooshed into him while changing lanes, with disastrous results. A thing I noticed on that drive in the countryside around Sanlúcar: at some point he had to defog the windshield in the crappy weather, and the defogging was just instantaneous. I realized that the defogger was harnessing the air conditioning, which is fairly common nowadays, but which I'd never seen before. I was blown away by that, among many other things about the F355. @@carsandbids
I agree, growing up the f355 was always my favorite. It was just something so pure about the design. The Countach or the Testarossa could not come close.
9:04 It's a good thing that this car has a fire extinguisher ready. I almost forgot that this F355 Spider is also the same car model that Hoovies Garage had owned that was burned years ago.
Hey Doug, awesome dream car, awesome comprehensive review. You made me feel like I was right there touching and feeling the car mysel. A bit of a suggestion too. When you were driving the car and doing all the comments, if not too hard, I think that showing images of the car's dash and instruments operating would've been just amazing! Cheers!
They're great but the Berlinetta is the one you want. The convertible doesn't look as pretty. You lose those classic buttresses. The Targa roof doesn't fit well, can leak, squeaks and creaks as the car flexes. Both have scuttle shake because of the loss in rigidity and it affects their handling. The Berlinetta is the dream for me.
actually toyota announced they are able to use electric and hyrdogen power plants mated with a conventional manual transmission, the same transmissions theyve used for decades. Watch the Toyota 86 announcement from a few months ago .

What do you do for a living?
One of the best. Especially in the rock yellow. Sounds great, was cheap until recently. Probably second to the f40 for me.
It was great seeing a 355 in The Rock. Which is a James Bond movie. Look in to it. :)
Only early 355s have the valve guide issues. The bronze was replaced in late 97. Simple belt swap is only a couple grand.
Yep he is trying to make the car loook like it’s piece of shit 🤦♂️
I love Doug's reaction through the windshield while honking the horn. 14:01

Not enough power. OG NSX is sloooooow.
@@Cooe. enough power to have comparable times to the 348 (5.5) and F355 (4.7-4.8).
I remember the F355 video game and how good the car sounded .. they got that part just right, for sure.
Still prefer the uninterrupted roof lines on the Berlinetta model.
Alas, getting some real NFS 2 vibes here hehe
I loved that game... Only game I ever really played on my computer.
348’s all come manual, and have the sweet side strakes. Still have the engine out drawback though.
The power steering could always be removed.
“More than you can afford pal, Ferrari…”
Will you be reviewing the Ferrari F430 Spider in the future? It's one of my favorites in the Ferrari lineup. I absolutely love this car.
Up till 2010... as a kid. This was one of my favorites.... had a hotwheel and matchbox car of it. If i had one irl id drive it every day
I want fararri to make a bare bones electric 348 tbh😂 id get one if it handles well in the city and looks almost exactly like the original car. Looks like fun
Wanna know what id drive it through? Tornado season😂 you would NEVER but I WOULD~😅
@@hybridstoatdragona Pontiac Fiero?
..... 17:59 ok nevermind. Good looking car but cruddy engine. Typical fararri and Italian vehicle from the era.. darn it. Still a nice looking car
@imrytebeehyneu omg yes😂 that would handle potholes better than this. Especially if dirt roads flood.
My favorite Ferrari !! First seen and loved watching Golden Eye…
i wish i could afford one of these it's one of my all time favorite ferraris. and even if i could afford the actual car idk if i could handle the maintenance
Man, the 355s were SUCH good-looking cars. I don't even like red cars, but it works for Ferraris. A black-on-tan car would be even more wildly beautiful, but this thing is GORGEOUS even how it is.
Doug you are exceptionally good at what you do; thanks for sharing.
Can I just say something? I’m a designer, and I think the un-hidden keyhole on a Ferrari or any sports/supercar is COOL; it exudes swagger to be able to physically unlock your Ferrari with a metal key, plus I think it’s been enough time removed from mandatory keyholes that they can be more of a novelty now
Honest review. I appreciate that Doug is not trying to oversell this car for his friend.
@Daniel-zh6wv You first.
Probably one the best ferraris made (Even though it´s not the berlinetta), top 10 for sure. Thank you for making this video
Ferraris age so much better than Lambos. This car is gorgeous.

Modern HyperCars are all tech and HP/Trq figures. No personality unlike these classics, even if they do have other problems (which Doug mentions)
You have to drive one and you will understand. It is so much fun to use the whole powerband and floor it next to buildings to hear the noise.
My favourite Ferrari still to this day. I used to draw these in the back of my school books and I still just love the design
Love it! ❤
Slammed by the feminists, but praised by everyone who matters lol
Bummer.
Iam Getting NFS3 Hot Pursuit vibes If you Know U Know
I agree, growing up the f355 was always my favorite. It was just something so pure about the design. The Countach or the Testarossa could not come close.
9:04 It's a good thing that this car has a fire extinguisher ready. I almost forgot that this F355 Spider is also the same car model that Hoovies Garage had owned that was burned years ago.
That leather case should have the convertible roof top tool kit in it... FWIW.
dream car right here. I'll have one, one day. that sound, those looks, 90s perfection
I had to perform an engine out service on myself after watching this video. A 911 still sounds great and won’t break all the time.
Cheers!

This color combo is just perfect. This car is an actual work of art.
The 355 was the last of the beauty beasts from Ferrari, After this they are look too sculped and refined.
That interior is absolutely gorgeous! 😍
Holy crap, one of my all time favourites! This feels so much more Ferrari than some of the newer models.

In the words of Ferris Bueller - "If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up". Maybe get a bigger fire extinguisher?
For the mechanically inclined, you can change the belts, bearing and tensioners with the engine in the car by dropping the fuel tank and removing the heat shield. That saves thousands.
