The tires are one of the cheapest issues of the 355 - replace it. Besides the belt (I made it after 4 years, even if you do not drive much, the parts will get rusty) you have other expensive problems: I had a repair of the complete front suspension, the shocks were down after 18 years - 4000 Euro. Never forget, it is an old car. I replaced all the sticky parts, you mentioned in the video: 3000 Euro. Water pump: 1500 Euro; often you have electronic problems, some thousand Euro. And: The GENERAL PROBLEM of the 355 is the HEAT MANAGEMENT. When you drive on an open road, it's fine. But when you in the city at a traffic light, the engine soon heats up - and the ventilators must cool down - if they work well. I own my 355 GTS (1995, 2.7 Motronic) now for 9 Years: Total costs in this time: insurance and tax: 18.000 euro. Maintenance (oil, water, sparking plugs etc), repair (shocks, electronic parts) and replacement of old sticky parts about all: 45.000 Euro. And I go not to the official F-dealer. An expensive part of life, but I LOVE the 355. For me it is one of the most fascinating cars of all time. Every time I drive it, I'M IN HEAVEN...
18.000 + 45.000 = 63.000 ..... in 9 years .... = 7.000 per each year ... or 583 per month. All inclusive! For owning and driving - and heavily enjoying - a classic exotic sportscar from the good old times, I think that's not too much. Especially when you keep in mind the cars growing value.

Thank you for for an honest review of a 355. So tired of the "this is everything that is wrong with this car" reviews from others. I am a current 7 year owner of a 1995 F355 Berlinetta and I have no regrets about my purchase. I have performed two engine out services in that time period. I have had a few minor issues between services during the 7 years like a water pump, alternator bearing and a small leak in one of the radiators but that is to be expected in a 20 plus year old car.
During that 7 year tenure with your F355, what were the maintenance and service costs like, and did you have a specialist or Ferrari certified tech work on it or was it DIY?
Masterful wording. You have such respect for such wonderful cars, their history, and what makes them -at their essence-remarkable. This love and passion for vital auto traits is transmitted in this video like few other reviewers could muster. I was riveted all of the way through this review.
Nice video. I've been running my 94 F355 for 10 years/27k miles now. Wonderful. Cheapest car I've ever owned too. I've spent £20k looking after it including belt changes in that time, but it's increased in value by at least £40k. They all get the sticky switches. Tar remover gets rid of it on the handles etc until you get them refinished. Centre console has to be refinished at some point. New tyres transform the handling at under £200 a corner. Mines a keeper. Grab a good one while you can.
Just watched this for the first time on TV - really enjoyed it. As a 355 owner I can relate to all the opinions, and it contained many things I didn't know, like the difference between the first and second generation. Relaxed delivery, good level of information. Nice one. Now I'm going to check out some of your other vids.
Andy, that was... interesting... thanks? But I think I'll keep my ska 2tone... Jay, I'm not sure I can pull it off, my wardrobe being essentially black tshirts and blue jeans... but I'll have to see if I can't find a friend to gift it to...
That was a VERY pivotal car for Ferrari. I worked with Ferraris when that was a new car. 90° V8 w/that interesting exhaust bypass to sound like an F1 car. An absolute pleasure to drive!
I rarely comment on social media so by that standard this is a genuine critique. Firstly, great honest video Jay.. and from a non-owner. I can tell you that driving one of these is like driving a slice of history. A full page of Ferrari heritage. These cars had their issues like many cars do after a substantial design overhaul (F10 BMWs have had numerous factory revisions and corrections applied to it and there are still several class action lawsuits in flux - innovation comes with its liabilities!) The truth is, the happiest owners don't buy these cars, they pay adoption fees. For them, care and maintenance is not a chore, it's an education and a labor of love.
"A mixture of bullshit and truth " That made me laugh my ass off, James. As an owner of (2) 355's (had a third), I can tell you that statement is so true. I can also tell you the bad press is from people working on these cars who don't know what they are doing. My 98 F1 GTS runs like a swiss watch and has cost me very little for service. Great video, James and thanks for the plug! It was great to meet you also.
I agree, the 355 is THE perfect Ferrari. Having owned a Giallo 355 Spider many years ago, I changed it for a 360 Spider. The 360 was too easy to drive and didn't prove as challenging as my beloved 355. I paid £78k for my 355 from Meridian in Lyndhurst a Ferrari main dealer, back in 2005, the very same car sold the other day for £124k......
That sounds like a dumb investment. From 78 to 124(minus insurance, maintenance, storage, inflation) in 14 years, you are probably in a minus. But i have to admit that this is one of my favorite Ferraris of all times.
As per my username, I also used to have a 98 F355 F1 GTB. The sound that car made was unlike any other. Sure do miss it. I've driven a 360 F1 and there was tremendous leaps in F1 tech compared to the 355. I have not driven a modern Ferrari with dual clutch but it must be lightyears ahead of the original single clutch F1 in the 355's. Great video, you touched on valid points and enjoyed watching!
I stumbled across this video while searching for 355 exhaust videos and glad I did! Great video mate and looking forward to viewing your other videos! Hello from Texas!
Really enjoyed this. I have a 355 F1 GTS. I've seen many of the US videos saying these cars cost an arm and a leg. But I have found that whilst they are not cheap, they are not as horrific as you might think. The entry cost is high, the risk of stuff going wrong is a possibility (could be lots of cash) but generally I have found mine to be a good solid car. Sure there is always consumables and other stuff like manifolds which are a known weak point, but I reckon mine costs about 2-3 grand a year to service, maintain and repair averaged over the last 6 years. Worth every penny, especially as it has doubled in value.
Don’t care how unreliable Ferrari’s are I love them 😍 Had a 430 Spider for 6 months (Investment) but had to sell as I simply couldn’t afford to keep it 😢 The equity in the car paid a huge part of the deposit for a House crazy money !
Mr Boggy, I'm sorry for your loss. I have an extra car which is my daily and it has problems. I refuse to sell it because I'm weak and I know I'll miss it.
CONGRATULATIONS on your video. Lots of useful information and the truth about having and driving that car. When I was a teenage, the BMW dealer was close by and they were the only ones that imported Ferraris to Brazil back then. Going to the dealer to see them, the 355 was the first Ferrari I personaly saw, and it is my favorite up to now. It's not the one with the most performance but it's the most bealtiful
My '94 3000gt VR4 has 4 wheel steering, electronic suspension, the electric banana in the tailpipe, a Getrag 6speed, 4WD, and now it's modified, 550 hp and ft/lbs. at the wheels. Running costs are still zilch, and it still looks and sounds great. Guess I could always paint it red.
But does it sound as good, is it as well refined, or does it have that racing pedigree that Ferrari is always known for, as well as the quality of every hand-made part and well-tuned engine, titanium piston corn rods, 8500 rpm V8 that is tuned to perfection which makes it not overwhelming, and not underwhelming? A Mitsubishi will never compare to a refined italian sportscar like Ferrari. The driving is stiff, the engine is sometimes underwhelming, the exhaust nose is terrible, and that 4WD is a little bit of a heavy slug. The car performed worse on the race track than their Evo cousins, and it has a tendency of having quite the turbo lag. Even modified it sounds less of a Mitsubishi, and the VR4 doesn't produce as much hp as stock. Makes me wonder why people modding their cars have this need to say their car is faster when the ride quality and finesse is piss poor. C:

Great intro (first minute) to this video, JayEmm. Love the aesthetic of the F355. First exotic car I ever saw in person as a child, though in soft-top convertible form. Great looking, timeless design. :)

@@CBTalon97 wow i never liked either of those cars but loved the mazda rx7 i got when i was 15 for some reason its just better than the mitsubishi and nissan..
I had both Stealth - the Dodge production of Mitsubishi 3000 - and the 300ZX. The Dodge was only 175 hp cuz it was 12 valve, while the 300ZX was lighter and 250 hp plus it cornered better and interior was more plushy. Still, none compare to this Ferrari and I speak from 2 out of 3 experience.
Hi Jay! Everything right and very well told, thank you. This car is truly a pleasure. By the way: there is a trick to reduce the service costs of replacing the cam belt: dismounting the right rear tire (and some more), my garage do so and so the enginge doesn't got to be out for that service. And to complete your story: every 500km you should take a look at the level of engine oil - while keeping the engine running (dry sump!) and be absoletly carefull about oil drops: hot exhaust beneath!
It is so hard to find a video where the host will tell you about the real experience with having such a car. Tired of super entertainment. Really pleasant to watch such a sensible video.
BTW, Honda is still proving you can have supercar looks/pace with bulletproof reliability. I've owned my '18 Acura NSX for 10 months now. 15K km through two Canadian winters with Pirelli Sottozero 3 tires mounted in winter at temps reaching -30C............The car is gorgeous, unstoppable, reliable........I love it.
Maybe i am just bias’d towards Italian cars, but, i am sorry, never have, and never will see the appeal of a Golf GTI. I drove a nicely maintained GTI 1, a GTI 5, and 6, and they are quite honestly no different to any other front wheel drive runabout. They are boring, the handling is, well, to put it nicely, DULL, and no matter what color it is in, or what wheels you put under it, no one will notice you in traffic. Oh, and then theres the fact that fanboys seem to forget that it’s front wheel drive, is s hatchback, isn’t a real grand tourer, and it is called a GOLF😂😂 I will hold on to my ‘02 Alfa 156 V6 as long as i can. It handles much much better than any GTI can dream of (even though it is front wheel drive-a detail that every GTI fanboy reminds me of every time i bring it up..)has an amazing italian engine, sounds like a little Ferrari, and gets attention everywhere it goes. Oh, and it has no stupid LCD screens plastered all over the dash, it has no stupid buttons all over the steering wheel, the gears are selected by ME, through a regular old fantastic 6 speed manual stick shift and not through some button or flappy paddly monkey ear thingies behind the wheel, the dials are actual dials with needles, and it has an actual handbrake, not some hidden button somewhere. Ohh, and it wont make farty farty sounds everytime i change gear..
I take jayemms point but a Golf gti isn’t faster on straight or twisty roads. Unless you are a dim driver. A 355 is a superb handling car and is very very quick even by today’s standards if you know how to drive.
Over here in Westhampton, NY back in 2003 when I was parking cars for the crazy dog diner I got into a blue 355 convertible with dark blue leather and blue top(too much blue). As I took it down the street for a special valet parkers critique I noticed that besides the gated gear shifter it drove and reminded me the feel of exactly that of..... an nsx.
Great video James as always! I absolutely love the 355's awesome looking car and to answer your question on people's favourite Ferrari well mine is the F40, in fact the F40 LM is my favourite car of all time 🙂🤗
My Dad had the F355 GTS F1 and it was an awesome car, up until the battery went flat......which was every time you wanted to use it. Where is a battery found on this car.....well behind the front drivers side wheel in a hidden panel if you can find a jack low enough to fit under !!!! A really rewarding car to drive and that V8 screaming banshee sound......oh my days !!
I panicked for a moment until I remembered that cars are driven on the other side of the road on the other side of the ocean lol. Beautiful example of the 355.
A very nice video and commentary of the 355GTS and rightly saying that this was the last of the 308 series line, a real classic Ferrari before they got oversized with paddles and mode buttons. As to the issue of catching fire, this is mainly due to a lack of inspection of the two aluminium fuel tanks, which would chafe against their looped steel support straps and also failure to timelessly replace the associated rubber fuel hoses. Another issue to be aware of is the cam belts' tooth gears. These are made of plastic and can eventually disintegrate, losing the belts etc. So worth replacement if you have any 308 series...
I'm not a Ferrari guy, but this is THE Ferrari! If I were asked to draw a sketch of a car to represent Ferrari brand - this would be it. I hope to own one someday! In cocaine white with tan interior, full Wolf of Wall street style!
Hey James…This is the first video of yours that Jacob and I watched…great to see how you have progressed and always a marker for our where we want to be with our channel…Keep up the great content.
Ah yes, my favorite Ferrari has to be a 246 Dino. Yes I know some believe the Dino is not a "real" Ferrari but I do believe the Ferarristas have given it membership in the club, finally. When I was in high school many years ago I had a good friend who's father was from Italy, and had family connections there. He purchased a lightly wrecked Dino in Italy, shipped it to California, repaired it in his garage to like new specs. He was a perfectionist in every aspect of his life, and that Dino looked like factory new when completed. I believe he sold it for $10,000US at the time. And as they say, the rest is history. lol
I’ll be honest, I’ve never been a particular Ferrari fan. BUT, I do like the 355. I bought a Mk2 MR2 T-Bar, the poor man’s version, loved the Targa Roof. And even had a couple of people ask what Ferrari it was (No, really). But my favourite Ferrari would have to be the Daytona. Beautiful machine.
Have to say spot on review..well done. I was an owner of a F355 spider in red with matching red full leather interior even the roof cover was in leather. Negatives getting in and out you need to be a gymnast..keeping it clean from dust before I put on the cover, the rubber bits got sticky may of been made in China! Dead power before 3,500RPM..steering wheel to big as it had an airbag in it,.dashboard was to plain, electric seats had to move and windows had to do to move back and forwards the electric roof and one day it miss timed and hit the seat top. Picked up stone chips easy around the bottom half of the car, around town was mostly in first and second gear..exciting but gets a bit boring to, although the BHP was 380 it felt like a sports bike more torque would be better as its non turbo. I don`t like the tall windscreen, half the height would be great and the engine bay gets very hot and some rubber pipes cracked and let in air had to replace caused engine to have lack of power. Pop up headlights I did not like and the `engine out` belt change every 3 to 5 years is a pain. Positives after checking the 348 and the 328 I like the 355 was another level above them..the looks, the sound and the handling. Above 3,500RPM was life changing going through 20 minute tunnels in Japan all cars moved across for me and let me go..loved it. I raced a 5 litre amg twin turbo mercedes for 15 mins in Cyprus in and out of the traffic got to the light in Nicosia he looked at me with his big cigar stunned.Hehe..now I and a family man with kids looking at getting a 911 Porsche as I like the rear seats that will come in handy and better as an everyday driver.
You are very lucky to have known the original owner of the vehicle, that makes the purchase less of a crap shoot. It looks like the car was taken care of, the driver's seat looks almost brand new. Enjoy your car, it's beautiful.
I loved my 355. It was my only car for about 8 months so it was used daily. Got some looks doing the week's shopping in Asda then trying to find space for it all in the car, passenger footwell made a good boot. Was a great drivers car. Miss it. Had a 458 after that and it's such a different car. So so easy to drive FAST but also drove just like a mondeo when you wanted to potter around town. Best of both worlds that car
Just realised you took the car the Sudbury/Ballingdon, Borley, Melford bypass run I like to run my 996 and 997 down. Ironically the F355 was always the car I wanted, but as you say they've more than doubled in value the last decade! and I'm quite happy with 911's!
Nice one. My favorite is the F1 berlinetta version of that car. I got to strop one around our local track here in Wellington New Zealand (Manfield) a few years ago, just epic! :-)
Definitely love your enthusiasm yet the camera jittering and strange outside wheel shots while rolling made me want to shut the video off. Anyway maybe we all learned together. Cheers, H.L. Westlake
Great video! 2 things - there was no 355 Challenge Stradale because, at least in the US, the 355 Challenge was itself fully street legal. Second - change those old tires dude! Always amazes me when people run old or bad tires on great cars. It's the only part that touches the road! Maybe then you can finally chuck it through the bends like you want or leave the GTI in the dust. Either way, for short money you'll transform the way it drives.
The f355 Berlinetta is one of my favorites. If you can get ride of the wierd stance with a mild drop and wheels with larger offset or even small spacers...PErfection.
@@Spyder-gg8ll i read this in a car magazine years ago [paraphrasing]; *_the NSX is a Ferrari designed by people who went to school..._* i feel similarly about the MR2...
I've loved these from when Jeremy Clarkson drove 'em! Rally driver Richard Burns said they were a bit light in steering, but apart from that, it's a beautiful machine...!!!
It's only engine out for the belts, and that's not how a lot of places do them anyway now. I just recall an interview with someone at Ferrari where they said an aim of the 550 was reducing service cost vs the 456
JayEmm on Cars Hi Jay, I recently bought one (456GT) and a friend of mine is doing the service himself. Perhaps I can fill you in with service costs when I do them?
At 20:15 I really thought there was going to be head on collision. That Opel or Renault looked like it was in he middle of the road.....an was hesitant to moving over until the last few seconds.....I actually felt butterflies!!
More common than you think. Fortunately this one has been in dark temp controlled storage, but even still I was taking it very easy. The car is going to be used again a bit more and it's getting new tyres and a refreshed interior.
JayEmm on Cars Tires have an expiration date for a reason. Those are probably so dry rotted they are ticking time bombs! Why haven't the tires been replaced if you said they were cheap?
Andrew McIntosh The tyres are being sorted as part of this car's refresh. My only opportunity to film it was before they came off, or the film would not have been made at all
The sticky coating is a soft touch clear coat that has gone off over time. I removed it from my 430 trims using cleaning alcohol and after a bit of elbow grease it looked fine without it.
The gts roof can leak but the engine does not need to come out, you can remove the fuel tank so you can get access to the engine belts etc, i have driven two versions of this car and the manual gearbox berlinetta version is the best version of the 335, it is an awesome car
As a Porsche guy I cannot realy judge what you are saying about Ferraris, as I myself have no experience with them. But what you say sounds well thought through and competent. Excellent review, I think.
This is a very good report. On the electric-adjustable suspension, this was first fitted to the Mondial t from 1989. It’s worth checking the units as if the car has been under-used they can leak. New units are £2000 plus vat each! The difference on the settings is not very noticeable! The catalectic converters should be checked too prior to purchase, on the Mondial t, which uses one for the post 1992 model year, it costs just £2790! Wow!! Cats came in on any make of car from late 1992. The sticky switches can be fixed in Loughborough, by an independent Ferrari specialist. Those tyres are way too old, never use old tyres especially on a car that may not have been used often! I bought a low mileage 19 year old classic Ferrari with 19 year old tyres on!!! Disaster!! To me the best part of any Ferrari ownership, apart from the driving, is the Ferrari Owners’ Club of Great Britain, we have wonderful events organised to use to cars amongst like minded enthusiasts.
Typically the 355 catches fire when somebody else drives it.
Like hoovies 😳😳😳
Just don't let Parker drive your car and you'll be fine 😂🤣
17:29 And people are rightfully worried if something dangles off of an Ferrari...
Terry Jones yes, that was the joke

Just watched this for the first time on TV - really enjoyed it. As a 355 owner I can relate to all the opinions, and it contained many things I didn't know, like the difference between the first and second generation. Relaxed delivery, good level of information. Nice one. Now I'm going to check out some of your other vids.
Thanks, hope you enjoy them!

Good pointer for James May.
Andy, that was... interesting... thanks? But I think I'll keep my ska 2tone...
Jay, I'm not sure I can pull it off, my wardrobe being essentially black tshirts and blue jeans... but I'll have to see if I can't find a friend to gift it to...
Rick, I see you're a man of culture :) If I have to choose a favorite, it'll be really painful... I think I would go with the 250 LM.
Still my dream car, a GTS in Giallo modena thats recently had an engine out service.
This is probably my favorite car off all time! So pretty with an amazing soundtrack to boot!
That was a VERY pivotal car for Ferrari. I worked with Ferraris when that was a new car. 90° V8 w/that interesting exhaust bypass to sound like an F1 car. An absolute pleasure to drive!
9k rpm 👏🏼
Thankyou for taking the time to comment, glad you like the video and it is much appreciated!
My pleasure Dave, thanks for helping bring this car back to tip top condition
I agree, the 355 is THE perfect Ferrari. Having owned a Giallo 355 Spider many years ago, I changed it for a 360 Spider. The 360 was too easy to drive and didn't prove as challenging as my beloved 355.
I paid £78k for my 355 from Meridian in Lyndhurst a Ferrari main dealer, back in 2005, the very same car sold the other day for £124k......
You can still get low mileage, high spec 355 spiders for £65-80K
That sounds like a dumb investment. From 78 to 124(minus insurance, maintenance, storage, inflation) in 14 years, you are probably in a minus. But i have to admit that this is one of my favorite Ferraris of all times.
Some engines just give me a near religious goosebump rush. Thank you.
You're welcome
As per my username, I also used to have a 98 F355 F1 GTB. The sound that car made was unlike any other. Sure do miss it. I've driven a 360 F1 and there was tremendous leaps in F1 tech compared to the 355. I have not driven a modern Ferrari with dual clutch but it must be lightyears ahead of the original single clutch F1 in the 355's. Great video, you touched on valid points and enjoyed watching!
Thanks!

I own a Ferrari. Yeah, well I own a Mitsubishi, so take that! Sad.

Great video about the F355. I have a buddy that bought a 550 Maranello. He was ready for the maintenance. Thus he's never complained about it.
Hope you get that F360 Modena one day and cheers mate.
My 300ZX has adjustable “comfort” and “sport” suspension settings, and it was introduced in 1989...
Adam Balding Datsun ceased to exist in 1984, so not really...
It’s more “Nissan” than Datsun, by 99.9999%.
I was thinking the same thing about my 3000GT VR4. They also had the butterfly to adjust the exhaust note.
I love my 90 300zx tt
The first min holy shit, the sounds, the edit, the car. This is what's cars are all about thank you Jay!!!
The engine doesnt have to come out for the service. It *should* but doesn't have to
It is so hard to find a video where the host will tell you about the real experience with having such a car. Tired of super entertainment. Really pleasant to watch such a sensible video.

One of my favorites for sure. The 355 aged so well compared to the 360, which now looks so dated and typical for the early 2000's.

What a machine. I couldn't care less if a Golf GTi is faster. It's an F355. It is a proper car.
Yes it is
Mike L Golfs are for shits!!!
I would bet serious money on a good enough driver, being able to see off the new Golf in an old 355. Technology aint everything....
Great job as commentator. Very informative. My dream car . Love the 348 also. Thank you for posting.
Love this car. It’s just stunning in my opinion. I love it, I’ve had a poster of it in my childhood.

246 Dino GT. Good enough for Danny Wilde .. Good enough for me!
My favourite Ferrari.... So many to choose from. But the best for me is the Ferrari F40
A Car from a different era nearly 25 years old. It amazes me how modern and beautiful it still looks👍🏻
It is much modern than many "modern" cars which only copy modernism
I'm not a Ferrari guy, but this is THE Ferrari! If I were asked to draw a sketch of a car to represent Ferrari brand - this would be it. I hope to own one someday! In cocaine white with tan interior, full Wolf of Wall street style!

This was my favourite Ferrari as a kid. In many ways it still is. I prefer the big front engined V12 GTs they made though
This needed a lot more drive-by sounds 😭😭
Ah yes, my favorite Ferrari has to be a 246 Dino. Yes I know some believe the Dino is not a "real" Ferrari but I do believe the Ferarristas have given it membership in the club, finally. When I was in high school many years ago I had a good friend who's father was from Italy, and had family connections there. He purchased a lightly wrecked Dino in Italy, shipped it to California, repaired it in his garage to like new specs. He was a perfectionist in every aspect of his life, and that Dino looked like factory new when completed. I believe he sold it for $10,000US at the time. And as they say, the rest is history. lol
My favourite ferrari is the 348 :)
That car was so cheap 10 years ago. I love it too. Also Maserati 3200 GT was like 12-13.000 Euros back than :(
My favorite is the BB 512
I’d love the 348 bad end with the 355 engine that scream is musical in the 355
I’ll be honest, I’ve never been a particular Ferrari fan.

6:20 I believe those are PART numbers you’re pointing out on the air boxes, not serial numbers.
You are very lucky to have known the original owner of the vehicle, that makes the purchase less of a crap shoot.

Best of both worlds that car

really good interesting review, and yes its the way a Ferrari should be
Great video!
Not my car so not my decision on the tyres, but they are getting changed soon
The f355 Berlinetta is one of my favorites. If you can get ride of the wierd stance with a mild drop and wheels with larger offset or even small spacers...PErfection.

Don’t forget the 456 is a V12 and does not need the ‘engine out’ for service, saves some money...
10 year old tyres on a Ferrari 😳
More common than you think. Fortunately this one has been in dark temp controlled storage, but even still I was taking it very easy. The car is going to be used again a bit more and it's getting new tyres and a refreshed interior.
Yea, thats ridiculous. Such a car not being driven with speed and vigour because one is scared of old tyres, is a sin.
JayEmm on Cars Tires have an expiration date for a reason. Those are probably so dry rotted they are ticking time bombs! Why haven't the tires been replaced if you said they were cheap?
Andrew McIntosh The tyres are being sorted as part of this car's refresh. My only opportunity to film it was before they came off, or the film would not have been made at all
Its normal that a 355 with rotted tyres to be much slower than a GTI.
A car like this deserve 4 Michelin PS4S.
