This week, the Ferrari that started it all!
A full review and ownership experience of Damian’s beloved Rosso Corsa 1996 F355 Spider. A car he has owned since 2003, and it kick-started TheCarGuys’ collection.
If you want to know EXACTLY what it’s like to own and live with one of Ferrari’s greatest modern supercars, how much it costs, how fast it goes and what it’s like to drive? You’ve come to the right place.
Was does 355 stand for? How much does servicing cost? Why is it so highly regarded? Is a manual gearbox really that good? And what does a Ferrari V8 sound like at 9,000 rpm? All these questions and more are answered in this week’s episode.
Created by two ordinary guys with an obsession for cars, TheCarGuys.tv is a digital channel that celebrates everything automotive - supercars, classics, quirky, hidden gems and those in the TCG garage.

Not much of a purist are you lads!! The Berlinetta or the GTS is the way. The trouble with the spider is you don’t get the key feature of the car which is the buttress.

@@alihussain5272 correct. Berlinetta or GTS. Have a lovely model of the Berlinetta, but if I could have one to own it'd be the GTS. Get that targa top down & go for a summer road trip. Still retains the lovely silhouette too. The spider loses the shape & magic

This still looks just as gorgeous now as it did at launch. A proper Ferrari. Wasnt this the Ferrari that Clarkson was so obsessed with in the 90s??? (I think he even owned one at the time) Looks truly stunning, sounds beautiful and goes like a red bolt of lightning!!! Loving that classic Ferrari 'click-clack' gear gate.

I do love the looks of the 355. A few years ago when I decided to sell my Lotus Esprit, I first looked at the 348, then the 355 and even got as far as a couple of test drives, but I think it was the engine out for the cam belt service that scared me off. So I saved a bit more and got my 360.
Since then prices doubled from the £40k I was looking at.
It’s got pop up lights, how can you not love it. 👍

Great vid. I had a rosso/ black F355 spider with the Fiorano handling pack and after 14yrs sold it last year. Loved it; loved looking at it; loved driving it ( with one hand with the fingers crossed nothing would go wrong ) controversially though, have not had one second of regret since i sold. Just couldn't be bothered anymore...like yours; big service then roof fails etc etc etc. Glad you didn't sugarcoat it and kept it real talking about the great bits and the really bad bits.

The first Ferrari I've seen and heard flooring on the street was a 355 Berlinetta.. it was love at first sight...
Im crazy about Ferraris, all of them, but the 355 has a special place in my heart...
I can imagine driving it all day long, enjoying the symphony and specially the experience that this particular Ferrari provides, and then, put it into the garage and just keep listening the engine crackling while it cools down...
I had the opportunity to see it in person, it's so sexy and beautiful, large, low... It really has something different from the modern Ferraris...
Congrats on the car my friend! The testimony above was written by a truly passionate Ferrari lover.

Great video. I have a 95 Berlinetta, which I absolutely love. It's got a Capristo exhaust that wails at higher revs. I've had it for 2 years and it's been fairly reliable. I had to replace the shocks because it floated like a Cadillac when I first bought it. I also put in Fabspeed cats during my recent major service. And lately it's been in the shop due to a leaky ABS pump, ugh. But the driving experience is fantastic. It sounds amazing, it's smooth and sporty, and it handles superbly in the turns. It's more of a momentum car since it doesn't have the torque of more modern cars. I hope I can keep it forever too.

    You go it right.
I recently purchased a F355 and have been driving it this spring and summer.
I can add a couple of things to your list.
The smell of the leather is wonderful. The heat and smell of the engine after it has been running are exceptional. The cacophony of sounds that the engine makes at all speeds are out of this world. The beauty of the bodywork is stunning. My favorite small detail is the darkened (painted) shadow line under the side strake that runs along the sides of the car. Who else does that? The engine bay is something to behold and as you mentioned the side mirrors literally shape and reflect a Pininfarina stylized world. My only wish is that I could watch the F355 as it drives down the road while I am driving it although that would be impossible obviously.

Still one of, if not the prettiest cars ever made, was looking at one yesterday at jct 600 Brooklands , just had a service, the video does not do it justice , they are lower and wider in real life than on screen. Excellent as always chaps my Father had a GTS for 11 years and sold it when he was 75 he said it would ruin me financially if I was to inherit .... his third cam belt change cost £13K and at the time I was saving for a house deposit...so he protected me from myself 👀 miss both him and the car dreadfully but seeing his receipts for 11 years I honestly couldn’t afford one...or I could sell my modest collection for one car....maybe have to work harder ...

Hey Jason, Damian‘s 355 was the first Ferrari I drove too, that time we all went to Italy. What an experience to drive a Ferrari in its home turf! Damian was a real gent for handing over the keys. It just occurred to me watching this that the next sports car I bought was a Ferrari although it was a few years later. It‘s funny how these experiences stick in your head. Totally agree with the video, 355 is one of the most beautiful of the modern era Ferraris. Great car and great video.

Really? How much do you drive it?
And are these fast enough for what they are, or do they feel underpowered? 300 something horsepower without much torque isn't a lot. Driving a ferrari is more about the experience then about speed i imagine.
That sound alone makes up for everything i bet. Gives me goose bumps everytime.
Was just looking, and they really aren't that expensive. I expected these had gone mental pricewise
like all other cars over the last decade.

If you replace the solid rear panel, with a Challenge style grill, the heat won't be as bad. Also if you replace the standard exhaust manifolds with an aftermarket system, it's a one and done type affair. Less expensive then replacing the stock units, multiple times. It also sounds s even better!

Gps mounted screen in a custom tachometer layout. Kept the physical gauges Did an amazing wrap around cockpit dash with 3 tv screens. Air conditon upgrade with heated n cooled seats. Amazing sound system. Back up cam n side mirror camera tvs. Im 6'2" had custom seats made n mounted to fit me perfectly not cramped anymore. Pit in 100' of led rope n strips. As well soundproofed the cab by 95% spent about $18k on the interior and did alot myself, i made the dash and seats. Now im considering opening up wheel wells for larger rims. Looking into a solid airlift n lowerimg kit. Then im looking into turning it into an electric super car. i love 348 gts and will buu one next. I want to get a 308 and 328 gts as well but i got to finish a few things first. I sold my cherry testorosa 3 years ago and i miss it but i really love the 355, its a better car to me in so many ways.

I loved every drive but was always worried ‘what might go wrong?’ I’ve driven all kinds of exotic cars since but if I was ever going to buy another sports car, it would be a 355 without question. To repeat what’s been said before- just the most perfectly designed car there has ever been.

That's the first Ferrari I fell in love with. I dreamt about it and would love to one day own one. Taking that I could be able to cover all the costs pertaining to maintenance and stuff.

well done guys. Can't really describe my feelings right now. I love hate this car so much. It is such a striking car & unfortunately my major dream car since I'm a boy. There are so many stories & myths about this thing. Just sat in one today (Classic car auction , 02./03-08.19) and I'm always disappointed by the built quality. And running costs are more than a pain. Can't wait to buy one one day!

I have no idea where these figures are coming from! I’ve owned mine for nearly 10 years now and it’s never cost me so much. All four original new tyres: £650. Full major service, brake discs skimmed, needed to replace a relay and that cost me only £2300. My insurance is super cheap on a 5000 mile policy - but I rarely do over 1000 miles per year. They do have their problems, and when you get them you have to research and research some more, roll your sleeves up, and then get on with repairing them. My advice: NEVER go to a main dealer to look after these cars. Contact the Ferrari owners group / Club and ask them to point you in the direction of a reputable Independent Specialist. I don’t think I’ve spent over 10k in approx 10 years! They are an absolute joy to own, and I couldn’t recommend them enough. In my ‘death box’ I’ve documented how to and who to go to to upkeep this beautiful car, as, when I’m brown bread, my daughter will take ownership.
Last thing - the front bonnet should not be shut like that - it’s called a slam panel that needs to be pushed / slammed from its fully opened position.

I also love de F355!. Someone I know has an F355 Berlinetta with Tubi exhaust and it makes a troughly unique sound. You can tell it's an F355 from a mile away.
What I also know is that the break lines are on rubber standard. He has changed that to metal ones as far as I know to prevent them from expanding during trackdays. There was a moment he couldn't break any more. Hopefully you don't have any problems with that.
I also would never sell this car!

I bought the Maranello demonstrator at 6 months old and still have it 25 years later. It has been expensive to change cam belts periodically and I did get the sticky door handles refinished but the other sticky rubbery paint is a mess. So far nothing else expensive though the heat does cause all the rubber boots on injectors to melt, etc. The US spec ones have the whole rear panel with perforations rather than jut the top bit.

Thanks guys great video and very interesting, in the early 2000's I was tempted by a 355 Coupe but went with a Gen 1 GT3 911, still would've loved to own one but don't fancy the servicing and upkeep costs! Thanks for sharing!

While the F355 maintenance stories are well founded a lot of them have had significant work done already over the years. So, if you find a good one with some genuine mileage on it some of costly issues have already been resolved - such as the headers, sticky plastics, etc. I look forward to owning one at some point down the road.

Another great episode. Was always going to be my first super car(in Tour De France blue on crema)...until about 2 years ago when I realised the service costs. Now it has to be the 430 Scuderia. I'm sure the 355 will make it into the garage one day, perhaps when I purchase this one from your wife. Keep up the good work gents

Great vid, wonderful car. Like you, my F355 is a keeper. I've had it 11 years and done 28k miles. Mine's an early pre airbag manual berlinetta. I've not had as many issues, but have spent £20k in that time on maint, including new shocks, brakes and a few engine out belt changes. It's increased in value by more than that though, but I don't care. It's one of the greatest Ferrari's at any price and it will stay with me. The noise and open gate shift alone make it worth every penny.
