This week, the Ferrari that started it all!
A full review and ownership experience of Damian’s beloved Rosso Corsa 1996 F355 Spider. A car he has owned since 2003, and it kick-started TheCarGuys’ collection.
If you want to know EXACTLY what it’s like to own and live with one of Ferrari’s greatest modern supercars, how much it costs, how fast it goes and what it’s like to drive? You’ve come to the right place.
Was does 355 stand for? How much does servicing cost? Why is it so highly regarded? Is a manual gearbox really that good? And what does a Ferrari V8 sound like at 9,000 rpm? All these questions and more are answered in this week’s episode.
Created by two ordinary guys with an obsession for cars, TheCarGuys.tv is a digital channel that celebrates everything automotive - supercars, classics, quirky, hidden gems and those in the TCG garage.

355 was my favorite Ferrari as a kid. It still looks amazing.
well it fine for its time...
Not much of a purist are you lads!! The Berlinetta or the GTS is the way. The trouble with the spider is you don’t get the key feature of the car which is the buttress.
@@alihussain5272 well, i don't know why but for me the spider is the way to go, it has that beautiful flat rear end
@@alihussain5272 correct. Berlinetta or GTS. Have a lovely model of the Berlinetta, but if I could have one to own it'd be the GTS. Get that targa top down & go for a summer road trip. Still retains the lovely silhouette too. The spider loses the shape & magic
Never surpased . 360 M is beautiful but less than F355
Who wouldn't want a mate like Damien? Garage full of super cars and prepared to share them with his mate.
and prepared to do donuts in his own Ferrari in his own front garden - LOVE IT
I had an F355 for 6 years. It was THE BEST on the street, or track! I miss it so much. The most enjoyment you can legally have with your clothes on.
The 288gto, f40 and 355 are literally what that horse means to me.
Lovely to see the sentiment despite having so much since. I’ve only ever driven one Ferrari and it was a 355 when I was 15 (I’m 38 now). I’ll never ever forget it lol. Quality content.
That shape is a dream.... The gated gearbox is perfect..... and that noise! The first Ferrari I fell in love with. One day....One day!
This still looks just as gorgeous now as it did at launch. A proper Ferrari. Wasnt this the Ferrari that Clarkson was so obsessed with in the 90s??? (I think he even owned one at the time) Looks truly stunning, sounds beautiful and goes like a red bolt of lightning!!! Loving that classic Ferrari 'click-clack' gear gate.
Growing up in the 90s this was the Ferrari I’d actually see on the streets of London. A true Ferrari as it’s a cross between racing and Italian sporting elegance. The popup headlights the noise It’s basically pornography😍😍😍🔥🔥🤤
Digital drivers displays are the worst thing to come to the car industry, bring back analogue dials. Great video lads👏
Out of all the car channels I watch, you two seem the most natural in conversation. It's a gift to be able to bring that on screen.
I do love the looks of the 355. A few years ago when I decided to sell my Lotus Esprit, I first looked at the 348, then the 355 and even got as far as a couple of test drives, but I think it was the engine out for the cam belt service that scared me off. So I saved a bit more and got my 360.
Since then prices doubled from the £40k I was looking at.
It’s got pop up lights, how can you not love it. 👍
How have you found the 360????
Great vid. I had a rosso/ black F355 spider with the Fiorano handling pack and after 14yrs sold it last year. Loved it; loved looking at it; loved driving it ( with one hand with the fingers crossed nothing would go wrong ) controversially though, have not had one second of regret since i sold. Just couldn't be bothered anymore...like yours; big service then roof fails etc etc etc. Glad you didn't sugarcoat it and kept it real talking about the great bits and the really bad bits.
It’s each to their own with this. I love working on mine. Gives me great pleasure, but could understand how it’d drive many people round the bend
The first Ferrari I've seen and heard flooring on the street was a 355 Berlinetta.. it was love at first sight...
Im crazy about Ferraris, all of them, but the 355 has a special place in my heart...
I can imagine driving it all day long, enjoying the symphony and specially the experience that this particular Ferrari provides, and then, put it into the garage and just keep listening the engine crackling while it cools down...
I had the opportunity to see it in person, it's so sexy and beautiful, large, low... It really has something different from the modern Ferraris...
Congrats on the car my friend! The testimony above was written by a truly passionate Ferrari lover.
Great video. I have a 95 Berlinetta, which I absolutely love. It's got a Capristo exhaust that wails at higher revs. I've had it for 2 years and it's been fairly reliable. I had to replace the shocks because it floated like a Cadillac when I first bought it. I also put in Fabspeed cats during my recent major service. And lately it's been in the shop due to a leaky ABS pump, ugh. But the driving experience is fantastic. It sounds amazing, it's smooth and sporty, and it handles superbly in the turns. It's more of a momentum car since it doesn't have the torque of more modern cars. I hope I can keep it forever too.
Thank you for the effort to make a long video on the 355. One of my all time faves since seeing it in Golden Eye as a kid. Enjoy it!
You go it right.
I recently purchased a F355 and have been driving it this spring and summer.
I can add a couple of things to your list.
The smell of the leather is wonderful. The heat and smell of the engine after it has been running are exceptional. The cacophony of sounds that the engine makes at all speeds are out of this world. The beauty of the bodywork is stunning. My favorite small detail is the darkened (painted) shadow line under the side strake that runs along the sides of the car. Who else does that? The engine bay is something to behold and as you mentioned the side mirrors literally shape and reflect a Pininfarina stylized world. My only wish is that I could watch the F355 as it drives down the road while I am driving it although that would be impossible obviously.
I wish I could watch myself drive mine too ...
I drove a 355 spider once for 2 hours straight. And I loved e very second of it. It's a work of art
I own one that is almost identical and owned a Berlinetta before this one. This is the best video of its type on the 355 I’ve found. Great job guys.
The airbag steering wheel from the F360 fits perfect in the F355.
Very nice 355 👍
" It was a concours car , till I got my hands on it" best line ever. Still one of, if not the prettiest cars ever made, was looking at one yesterday at jct 600 Brooklands , just had a service, the video does not do it justice , they are lower and wider in real life than on screen. It really is a hand built Ferrari does TVR moment isn't it ? , but with flat plane crank 9000rpm goodness. 👍👍👏👏
Concours car owners are the worst.
The 355 comes from an era of (in my opinion) some of the best Ferrari’s ever made. Along with the Testarossa and ultimately the F40. Great to see you guys driving it as it was intended and being honest about the running costs. Can’t wait for the next video.
Wow, what memories, it brings it all flooding back, I bought the same car as this new in 1998 and had so much fun in it, I had totally forgotten the boot opens the other way.
Car Guys vids get better each time. Great vid. Share the fun. Felt the joy this car brings. Love it.
Best intro ever. Have always loved the 355.
My dream car. It's not that fast but its voice is as enthralling as it is.
Excellent as always chaps my Father had a GTS for 11 years and sold it when he was 75 he said it would ruin me financially if I was to inherit .... his third cam belt change cost £13K and at the time I was saving for a house deposit...so he protected me from myself 👀 miss both him and the car dreadfully but seeing his receipts for 11 years I honestly couldn’t afford one...or I could sell my modest collection for one car....maybe have to work harder ...
Alan Wayte what a great dad
Age brings wisdom; if you dont mind me asking what did your dad do for a living?
What an amazing car. I loved the 355 back in '96. I remember Clarkson comparing it when it was the current baby Ferrari with the 60's ledgend- the E type Jag. Stunningly beautiful & wonderfully noisy. I salute you Damian for keeping it on the road- even though it is a money pit. Yet another icon bearing the prancing horse.
Señores simplemente brilliant!! Lol you have to spend it somewhere you can’t take with you , I love you guys you deserve more subscribers thanks for those wonderful moments evrytime you post a new video and let me dream a little bit .
Thanks for sharing the passion you have with these special cars. Telling us of what's good and what's hideously expensive to fix. Cheers.
This is the best value classic and most beautiful classic Ferrari you can buy for 70000 pounds and I think the price will go up and it is a great investment. The gearbox is what a Ferrari should have.
The ultimate Ferrari. My favourite car as a kid. Been watching you both now since you started, first time to comment. Love the content. When I get my first Ferrari I hope to share them like you do. A collaboration with harry has to happen!
Love the 355 review. Great, easy interesting banter. Thumbs up!
Hey Jason, Damian‘s 355 was the first Ferrari I drove too, that time we all went to Italy. What an experience to drive a Ferrari in its home turf! Damian was a real gent for handing over the keys. It just occurred to me watching this that the next sports car I bought was a Ferrari although it was a few years later. It‘s funny how these experiences stick in your head. Totally agree with the video, 355 is one of the most beautiful of the modern era Ferraris. Great car and great video.
I remember it well 👍
Great video guys, once again a proper proper super car review. You are getting better and better..👌🏻
You two are the best for showing us around cars we will never own!
F355 Spider is just a gorgeous car, my buddy had one for the longest time but his was like a blue/purple one, he finally got rid of it and got a 430 Spider in the same color, think he should have kept it too alongside the 430.
The love for that car was clearly visible and I enjoyed your video like always
Thanks for this terrific episode guys! The 355 is a dream, too bad i'll probably never own one. Those running costs are absolutely outrageous. Its like a beautiful woman and inspiring musician at the same time.
I had my 355 now for nearly 10 years - and the AVERAGE costs (insurance, tax, maintenance, repair, etc) were about 7000 euro per year - great video, really!!!
ouch, but worth it!
Really? How much do you drive it?
And are these fast enough for what they are, or do they feel underpowered? 300 something horsepower without much torque isn't a lot. Driving a ferrari is more about the experience then about speed i imagine.
That sound alone makes up for everything i bet. Gives me goose bumps everytime.
Was just looking, and they really aren't that expensive. I expected these had gone mental pricewise
like all other cars over the last decade.
So that car cost you 70.000 euro for 10 years...🤦🏻♂️To expensive:)
@@ferro706 "There is no cheap Ferrari" (Jeremy C.)
I really enjoyed this video, do more on some of the older cars you have. Also we are all fascinated in the running costs so the more details the better!
Another fantastic vid! What a car, a true peak for Ferrari. Gorgeous, sonorous, unreliable. A true Italian princess. Love it!
If you replace the solid rear panel, with a Challenge style grill, the heat won't be as bad. Also if you replace the standard exhaust manifolds with an aftermarket system, it's a one and done type affair. Less expensive then replacing the stock units, multiple times. It also sounds s even better!
THANK YOU! I just purchased my first Ferrari. A 1995 gated 355 Berlinetta color yellow over black
Excellent - congratulations and we hope you enjoy it 👍👍👍👍
Nice video review! What made it for me was the workshop sequence (around 4:59) in which there's a 348TS, registration L148BPA next to it. I bought that 348 new, and loved it, even drove it back to the factory in Italy. Happy memories!
Very cool!
Watching this makes me sick I sold mine, what a car! Mine was a near identical 1998 R55 SPY Rossi corsa, crema but with black carpets, bought from Carrs Exeter.
It was my dream to own one I also had a AMG C43 as my daily at the time which was great car.
I watch your videos & the juices start flowing to get something again like a 458 spider. Anyway keep up the great content.
Chris
Thanks, Chris - we’re glad you’re watching
Elegant, beautifully balanced but also exciting looks.
We agree!
Great car and video, you guys are having a blast with amazing cars, thats my fave Ferrari for sound and looks. Keep the videos coming, cheers guys
Awesome, this reminds me of the reason I love Ferrari and the reason I bought my Alfa!
Brilliant! A friend of mine had the F355 F1 Berlinetta back in the day - always an experience to go out in. Wasn't impressed for the parking ticket he once got for the car being too wide to fit properly in the bay, no doubt by a jealous Mr chippy!
Best vid yet guys. Love your work. You’re living the dream for us all and sharing it with us in a real and authentic way. Kudos.
Thanks, Greg
Best start to a video ever!!! Living the dream sirs.
I bought myself a 2nd f355 spider, i picked up a 1994 with 1120miles in mint mint minty shape for the deal of a lifetime, my aunts neghbor gave ot to me for $35k .then I bought a 2nd 1996 with 42k miles for $38k, i gutted the dash n trimmings and built a super high quality custom dash with all modern components. Gps mounted screen in a custom tachometer layout. Kept the physical gauges Did an amazing wrap around cockpit dash with 3 tv screens. Air conditon upgrade with heated n cooled seats. Amazing sound system. Back up cam n side mirror camera tvs. Im 6'2" had custom seats made n mounted to fit me perfectly not cramped anymore. Pit in 100' of led rope n strips. As well soundproofed the cab by 95% spent about $18k on the interior and did alot myself, i made the dash and seats. Now im considering opening up wheel wells for larger rims. Looking into a solid airlift n lowerimg kit. Then im looking into turning it into an electric super car. i love 348 gts and will buu one next. I want to get a 308 and 328 gts as well but i got to finish a few things first. I sold my cherry testorosa 3 years ago and i miss it but i really love the 355, its a better car to me in so many ways.
Really enjoy your chatting about the costs - no one else says diddley squat over the charges OR in such detail - made me think again about cars & and the marriage between lust for a particular car,as compared to the costs !! I think I solved my dilemma,as I moved house/home/neighbourhood/ and am living the Life again - stop that giggling Damien,& tell your mate he's just as BAD - you two make me laugh, and listen to the problems you have noted and dealt with also. Nice one guys !!
Thanks, Dave - glad you enjoyed it
Another great review, true passion! Thanks gents....and Damian are you working out man as you’re looking rather buff these Days!!? Competing with the other muscular car you Tubers!!✌️😉😂
True, this is such a gorgeous looking car from all angles.. Must say it's the only Ferrari that I can't stop looking at, especially the profile.. Love it..
Just ace!!! One of the best videos . The sound of beanage was so Cannon Ball Run !
Fragility Lets be honest , that noise and 9000 Revs = orgasmic Worth every penny it takes. You guys are just so appealing I always watch til the end , you get on so well
Why you guys don't have more subscribers I'll never know, love your videos & the enthusiasm you have for cars.
It’ll just take time
Lovely the 355 ferrari have it for 7 years still love it
Ahh, makes me miss mine. Owned since 2003, that's dedication!
Probably the best Ferrari 355 review I have ever seen. I love these cars and for me it is still ‘the one’. It is helpful to hear the positives and negatives of the car.
Thank you very much - glad you enjoyed it 👍
one of my favorite cars of all time. never sell, unless its to me one day.
locc dawg I am about to sell for a Speciale. Everyone tells me I’ll regret this
Would love you to do a video like this with a 550 Maranello (which I'd really like). It's like you're out for a drive with a couple of mates. No bollocks, just fun with warts and all real world costs discussed.
Great video guys!!! That sound 🎶🔊
I think it’s great that I can watch people who appreciate these cars, and have the means to afford the upkeep, drive them and enjoy them. I get to live through them vicariously in my RUclips fantasy world and it really doesn’t cost me a thing! I would love to have a Ferrari of my own but, unfortunately, my money is all tied up in Hyundai Motor Corp at the moment.
The only Ferrari I’ve driven. I was 18 and my friends dad had a 97 spider in yellow with the F1 box, the looks I got was funny. Amazing and still my favourite
Another great journey......thank you guys for the technic and romantic way you talk about cars
You’re welcome
I like this fast Fiat, my favourite points are the engine, no modern day synthetic burbles and pops, and the gear change,,,,,, :-) I almost forgot, who needs a Kenwood stereo when you have Damian driving to sing for you... loved the video guys good to see real enthusiasm....
Sorry Bro but this isn't a fiat
One of the best intros of any car video, ever.
Thanks for that video - my favourite car in your collection.
I had a ‘97 RHD Berlinetta manual. I loved every drive but was always worried ‘what might go wrong?’ I’ve driven all kinds of exotic cars since but if I was ever going to buy another sports car, it would be a 355 without question. To repeat what’s been said before- just the most perfectly designed car there has ever been.
👍👍
Absolutely love the sound of the 355 one of the best soundtracks from Ferrari 🚗 🎶
That's the first Ferrari I fell in love with. I dreamt about it and would love to one day own one. Taking that I could be able to cover all the costs pertaining to maintenance and stuff.
That was fun :-) Thanks CarGuys
@thecarguys.tv great to meet you today Damien at the Porsche stand, properly nice bloke, hope you enjoyed the rest of your day.
I love 355, had F355 Berlinetta in 2007 always regretted I sold it, so I bought 355 GTS now and doing a lot of work on the car. Will try keep this car for long time :)
👍🏻👍🏻
Another great vlog and I just love the 355 - it’s remains a stunning stunning car. Definitely a keeper!
Thanks
well done guys. Can't really describe my feelings right now. I love hate this car so much. It is such a striking car & unfortunately my major dream car since I'm a boy. There are so many stories & myths about this thing. Just sat in one today (Classic car auction , 02./03-08.19) and I'm always disappointed by the built quality. And running costs are more than a pain. Can't wait to buy one one day!
Wow, what an amazing car, great video with the usual banter, you guys are awesome. Ps. I watched all the adverts to help out with the next service bill!!! 😜😂👍
Thanks, Mark
Classic car guys, warts and all, review. Brilliant, love it 😎
definitely enter this video in Damian's HALL OF FAME ! excellent content with #passion !
Awesome thank you!
Great to see you love your F355. I own a spider and a GTS myself and will never sell them. Keep those vids coming guys!
Great video. Brings back tons of memories.
I have been watching this video from day one. Just have to thank you guys for it. It is like I've been out in it with you. I'm getting to old to get one just not had the money. Did have a mr2 vail side t bar custom for a time closest I could afford, now a day's it's VR simulator. Anyway thanks you lucky t**t. Love 💘
I have no idea where these figures are coming from! I’ve owned mine for nearly 10 years now and it’s never cost me so much. All four original new tyres: £650. Full major service, brake discs skimmed, needed to replace a relay and that cost me only £2300. My insurance is super cheap on a 5000 mile policy - but I rarely do over 1000 miles per year. They do have their problems, and when you get them you have to research and research some more, roll your sleeves up, and then get on with repairing them. My advice: NEVER go to a main dealer to look after these cars. Contact the Ferrari owners group / Club and ask them to point you in the direction of a reputable Independent Specialist. I don’t think I’ve spent over 10k in approx 10 years! They are an absolute joy to own, and I couldn’t recommend them enough. In my ‘death box’ I’ve documented how to and who to go to to upkeep this beautiful car, as, when I’m brown bread, my daughter will take ownership.
Last thing - the front bonnet should not be shut like that - it’s called a slam panel that needs to be pushed / slammed from its fully opened position.
wasn't sure if I clicked on a tax the rich video at first!
😂😂😂
I also love de F355!. Someone I know has an F355 Berlinetta with Tubi exhaust and it makes a troughly unique sound. You can tell it's an F355 from a mile away.
What I also know is that the break lines are on rubber standard. He has changed that to metal ones as far as I know to prevent them from expanding during trackdays. There was a moment he couldn't break any more. Hopefully you don't have any problems with that.
I also would never sell this car!
I bought the Maranello demonstrator at 6 months old and still have it 25 years later. It has been expensive to change cam belts periodically and I did get the sticky door handles refinished but the other sticky rubbery paint is a mess. So far nothing else expensive though the heat does cause all the rubber boots on injectors to melt, etc. The US spec ones have the whole rear panel with perforations rather than jut the top bit.
Sublime cars. I hope i get to drive one, one day. Great insight by you two, such infectious enthusiasm.
Loved this video guys :) One of those next to a 288 GTO would be my dream garage fun cars!!
That was a fantastic and fun video. Thanks again guys.
Thanks guys great video and very interesting, in the early 2000's I was tempted by a 355 Coupe but went with a Gen 1 GT3 911, still would've loved to own one but don't fancy the servicing and upkeep costs! Thanks for sharing!
Brilliant review, up there with Harry M. Knocks Dud DeBoring into a cocked hat.
Love the shape of that. As you say only one better shape, Magnum 308 GTB .....
People love cars from when they were growing up, you bought yours, never let it go.
While the F355 maintenance stories are well founded a lot of them have had significant work done already over the years. So, if you find a good one with some genuine mileage on it some of costly issues have already been resolved - such as the headers, sticky plastics, etc. I look forward to owning one at some point down the road.
I really enjoyed this one gents! Well done!
Yet another great episode gents. Carry on.
Another great episode. Was always going to be my first super car(in Tour De France blue on crema)...until about 2 years ago when I realised the service costs. Now it has to be the 430 Scuderia. I'm sure the 355 will make it into the garage one day, perhaps when I purchase this one from your wife. Keep up the good work gents
Another excellent video chaps!
it is a great episode. l loved the amazing information about the F355.
Do you like in the future to add to your collection another beautiful F355 with different colour?
It has to be the most beautiful car ever made, the lines and dimensions are just superb.... my full on dream care along with the AC cobra
Edit as well as the original Magnum 308 GTS 😍
Edit 2, 288 GTO 😍
Great vid, wonderful car. Like you, my F355 is a keeper. I've had it 11 years and done 28k miles. Mine's an early pre airbag manual berlinetta. I've not had as many issues, but have spent £20k in that time on maint, including new shocks, brakes and a few engine out belt changes. It's increased in value by more than that though, but I don't care. It's one of the greatest Ferrari's at any price and it will stay with me. The noise and open gate shift alone make it worth every penny.
