I love the plane scene in "The Boys" because i think it parodies this movies plane scene. Where it requires such an effort and quick thinking from superman to slow and stop the plane (even if it is absurd lol) whereas Homelander doesn't even bother trying. The worst that happens is Homelander fails and the plane still crashes Nifty lil easter egg imo
tbf, I don't think homelander could actually stop the plane, since the boys takes place in a world with real physics, he would just tear right through it like a bullet. But he still didn't really try.
@@ProjektTaku he’s probably tried before with another plane and learnt the hard way. As see in the Diabolical animation, at least for the first year or so, Homelander did want to be a hero, he just sucked at it and became disillusioned.
Superman can project a field around him..kinda like an invisible plate like they joked about, that's why he can carry things without them crumbling apart...but that's something most wouldn't know outside of the comics
Superman returns is my favourite superman film!!! Yes it’s flawed, but it made me feel for the character more then any other film has and there are moments at the end that bring me to tears. Really wish they did a sequel!!
@@RYMAN1321 same, the sequel had such a cool pitch with brainiac and could've explored more of krypton. However I do understand why it underperformed, lex was such a boring villain that was really a mistake to have as the antagonist of this movie, and the endings kind of lame and baffling at the same time. Personally I would've liked if this movie gave us bizarro, would've be a fun villain to see onscreen and given superman an actual challenge that could've maybe made the movie more successful.
@@RYMAN1321 same. Kinda hoping superman legacy or its sequel includes him, I think gunn could really delve into the weird aspects of him and make it work, like the "Underverse" and Htrae.

As a young teen, I had a huge crush on Brandon Routh after this movie. I was always disappointed that his career never took off. And it was cool to see Brandon's Superman back in the TV show special.
Brandon Routh is still my favorite Superman. I thought that movie was a really great blend of the charismatic with the burdened Superman, and it doesn’t have a hideous plot.
I grew up watching this and as a 7 year old was very confused as to what Superman was returning from. I loved it and watched it several times. Too bad it's not a masterpiece.
True I always did hate the fact that he didn't have anyone to get into a physical fight with One of the main reasons why I like Man of Steel better His fights with the Kryptonians in that movie were pretty rad
The Brandon Routh Superman in Crisis on Infinite Earths also DIRECTLY mentions Jason, his son from this movie, heavily implying that he is definitely the same version that we see in "Superman Returns".

Atleast superman 4 felt like a superman movie. Had action, superpowered bad guy and a positive message. It wasnt executed great but its ontentions were noble
If the crystals work as Lex claims, shouldn't the ones that Kitty dumps out at the end create an even bigger land mass than the one Superman just threw into space? Did nobody think of these things?
Bizarro would have been a cool villain for Superman to fight in this. Bizarro i favorite of mine and i wish we got a big budget movie of him. I am glad he was featured on the Superman and Lois show. His power looks awesome in that.
This movie is not particularly good, but I did watch it a fair few times during my childhood which cemented it as a nostalgic gem for me. Two things I can say of it, the style is quite unique which looking back is refreshing compared to the standardized feel of modern superhero movies, and Superman feels properly cool. All of the scenes of him demonstrating his powers are very memorable, the rest of it not so much.
This movie is so terrible even look at. Did the director (I know his name, but I’m not going to acknowledge it) know that Geoffrey Unsworth’s cinematography on Donner’s Superman was an integral of their success? This needs a radical color regrade if I’m going to watch it again.
@@ngultrum1, that was extremely apparent when they released that first picture of Routh in the costume. It’s not a good look for Superman to look like the evil Superman from Superman III when he supposed to be good.
@@kamdan2011 True, it's not just the \S/ either, the colouring of the movie & fitting of the suit in general is bad. Specially the fitting of his suit making him look fatter despite Routh specifically being ripped for the role. Or how he suddenly gets blue eyes in the eye shot, where doesn't have them anywhere else.
The scene that destroyed the movie for me was watching the Luthor henchmen and Kal Penn specifically beat up Superman on the island. I just thought, "Wait they couldn't at least pretend to use bigger guys as if it would matter?" That deleted scene def helps explain why Kal looked so angry in that scene though lol.
Part of the reason I love "Man of Steel" so much is because "Superman Returns," which was the direct predecessor, time-wise, to "Man of Steel," lowered my expectations of ever seeing a great Superman flick ever again in my life, to such a depressing degree, that when I walked in to see a different Superman origin story, in 2012, I fully expected that I was wasting my money. Instead, I loved it! And I feel I have to thank Brandon Routh, and "Superman Returns," for lowering my expectations enough that I was able to actually enjoy "Man of Steel" as a far superior version of the Superman I was force-fed as a child growing up in the 80's. Not that those first two Donner Superman films were terrible. They certainly were not. But they are also, inextricably, stuck in their time. They are so terribly dated that it was past time we got a more "modern" Superman. Now we have that. For all the crap thrown at DCEU nowadays, we at least got a better Superman. And I can't wait until the inevitable next Superman film finally comes out! Because it will. And Superman, for as strong as he is, always brings the strongest villains to the table. And that's what the DCEU really needs. The BEST evil, for the best good to battle against.
One thing I never hear people mention when discussing this movie is how ugly it is. It’s one of the first movies to ever be shot digitally, on the Thompson Viper Filmstream camera (David Fincher’s ZODIAC was shot on the same system). This was before RED Cinema cameras, and you can tell - everything is muddy and tan and lacks vibrancy. Fincher managed to make ZODIAC look nominally better than SUPERMAN RETURNS, but there’s a reason this camera system didn’t stick around. It’s hideous to look at this 1080p-mastered brown mess of a movie.
Loved Superman Returns....AND Man of Steel. (But what makes ‘Returns’ awesome is John Williams themes, that music is like the “Bond” theme and should always be used for Superman, that is the element ‘Man of Steel’ lacks)
@@jimd385 Very true. While I think John Williams score for Superman is great, I just find it to be more of a heroic theme whereas Hans Zimmer's theme is truly inspiring.

The return of bad bloke Brando
I love the plane scene in "The Boys" because i think it parodies this movies plane scene.
Where it requires such an effort and quick thinking from superman to slow and stop the plane (even if it is absurd lol) whereas Homelander doesn't even bother trying. The worst that happens is Homelander fails and the plane still crashes
Nifty lil easter egg imo
tbf, I don't think homelander could actually stop the plane, since the boys takes place in a world with real physics, he would just tear right through it like a bullet. But he still didn't really try.
@@ProjektTaku he’s probably tried before with another plane and learnt the hard way.
As see in the Diabolical animation, at least for the first year or so, Homelander did want to be a hero, he just sucked at it and became disillusioned.
@@Jwlar yeah.
The homalander in the final diabolical episode is actually a pretty good guy until he kills that women. Then he looses his mind.
Superman can project a field around him..kinda like an invisible plate like they joked about, that's why he can carry things without them crumbling apart...but that's something most wouldn't know outside of the comics
I always love when you guys discuss superman things! Your love for superman always results in really good, honest takes.
I legit heard james say "his plan is too grow a new Ireland"
“Putting aside the weird Kevin Spacey stuff…”
*shows Kevin Spacey getting slapped into coma*
“And speaking of dumb and lame-“
*Kevin Spacey smack*
Superman returns is my favourite superman film!!! Yes it’s flawed, but it made me feel for the character more then any other film has and there are moments at the end that bring me to tears. Really wish they did a sequel!!
Venom Wolf Sadly it didn’t live up to expectations, hence why it underperformed and the planned sequel was scrapped.
I would’ve liked to see Brainiac.
@@ProjektTaku Yes, agreed with Bizarro.
Still hope to see him on the big screen too one day
@@RYMAN1321 same. Kinda hoping superman legacy or its sequel includes him, I think gunn could really delve into the weird aspects of him and make it work, like the "Underverse" and Htrae.
12:11 That subject line on the email is one of the best hidden jokes I’ve seen in a long time. Great job with the edit!
This movie would have been better if the villain had been Corn of Coblin.
Hunter Becknell I wished we would’ve gotten Brainiac, as I always wanted to see him on the big screen.
We’re still waiting :( because this film didn’t do well enough for a sequel.
If they were considering Metallo for the sequel, surely it would be Corn of Corben?
Kevin Spacey and Bryan Singer. I didn't think history would be unkind to this film and make it even worse. But it was and it did.
As a young teen, I had a huge crush on Brandon Routh after this movie. I was always disappointed that his career never took off.
And it was cool to see Brandon's Superman back in the TV show special.
"What was the first super thing I did, Mommy?"
"You crushed a man with a piano."
God he was a brilliant Superman in Crisis in a brilliant event it's impressive how much he stood out.
The video at 1:04 for "purposes" shows a purple tortoise, and it took me half a second to realize this was a portmanteau. Nice work. 👏👏👏
Omg I didn't realize how much I missed you guys lol never take a break again! 👍🤣
This is an amazing super man brandon routh just looks like Superman and acts like him
Now, who's the real villain? Lex Luthor, or the director? Both. The answer is both.
The teaser trailer was all time. A seriously great trailer. Williams’ magnificent ‘Planet Krypton’ teasing a film we’d never get...
Brandon Routh is still my favorite Superman. I thought that movie was a really great blend of the charismatic with the burdened Superman, and it doesn’t have a hideous plot.
i think pacing was one of the problems. . almost every scene seemed padded with exception of the plane sequence.
I liked this film, especially its Art Deco aesthetic.
I grew up watching this and as a 7 year old was very confused as to what Superman was returning from. I loved it and watched it several times. Too bad it's not a masterpiece.
"Directed by a sex criminal"
I was like "I didn't know Spacey directed films!"
All makes sense now
And here i was thinking "I didn't realize non-sex criminals make major released motion pictures at all"
Always start my morning with a hearty bowl of metal-o’s! Good reference James! You are indeed right!
True
I always did hate the fact that he didn't have anyone to get into a physical fight with
One of the main reasons why I like Man of Steel better
His fights with the Kryptonians in that movie were pretty rad
You are SO right.
Metal-O is my favorite villain.
Brandon Routh- one of the best supermen
Crisis also references Superman IV - Lacy Warfield is listed among the dead on the plaques on Clark's wall.
Metal-O. My new favorite cereal.
Man, Ben's editing is absolutely amazing. That side note but was genius
I remember being... fine with this movie. I liked how it wasn’t afraid to be a little goofy and classic comic book superhero-ish
The Brandon Routh Superman in Crisis on Infinite Earths also DIRECTLY mentions Jason, his son from this movie, heavily implying that he is definitely the same version that we see in "Superman Returns".
I might have to watch the cw stuff just so I can see Brandon’s Superman again
"is it in the modern day, or is it the past?"
Oh...so like Archer then?
I liked this movie. I always thought Brandon was Christopher Reeves’ son for real. Lol but he did a nice job. The plane scene was great
I love you going back through old movies, tv shows, games, comics etc and especially revisiting good-decent-ish properties and watch as people who don't know the kind of stuff you do get upset over a couple of veggie-boys (waiting on your veggie-boys podcast where you discuss vegetable movies or anything you didn't get to discuss on TWP cuz there's just so much isn't there... Mason)
A worse Superman movie: Superman IV: The Quest For Peace
Yes!
Atleast superman 4 felt like a superman movie. Had action, superpowered bad guy and a positive message. It wasnt executed great but its ontentions were noble
Superman gets beat by a scratch
No.
Now I need to go watch the bit where superman lifts half the ship out of the water because that is awesome.
If the crystals work as Lex claims, shouldn't the ones that Kitty dumps out at the end create an even bigger land mass than the one Superman just threw into space? Did nobody think of these things?
The crystals grow like crazy when combined with kryptonite. These two numbnuts didn't seem to understand that.
Bizarro would have been a cool villain for Superman to fight in this. Bizarro i favorite of mine and i wish we got a big budget movie of him. I am glad he was featured on the Superman and Lois show. His power looks awesome in that.
Superman Returns is my favorite on screen version of the character
Awesome video to come back to. The back and forth are awesome, some great laughs
This is actually my favorite Superman movie.
3:05 The boot having Superman symbols is unnecessary…
They even put them on the action figures
If he is the same Superman from the 70's does it mean that this movie is set in the 80's ?
This movie is so terrible even look at. Did the director (I know his name, but I’m not going to acknowledge it) know that Geoffrey Unsworth’s cinematography on Donner’s Superman was an integral of their success? This needs a radical color regrade if I’m going to watch it again.
It looks closer to Dark City than Superman: The Movie
It also makes Routh’s contact lenses more ghastly.
It makes the Superman logo look like he smeared his own shit on his chest & made an \S/ out of it. Due to the red looking like brown.
@@ngultrum1, that was extremely apparent when they released that first picture of Routh in the costume. It’s not a good look for Superman to look like the evil Superman from Superman III when he supposed to be good.
@@kamdan2011
True, it's not just the \S/ either, the colouring of the movie & fitting of the suit in general is bad.
I don't agree. That would only work with a cheesy 80s cornball tone. I think what Hans Zimmer came up with is far superior
@@andrewvincent7299 …Absolutely sir, that is the beauty of art, it can mean different things to different people.
@@jimd385 Very true. While I think John Williams score for Superman is great, I just find it to be more of a heroic theme whereas Hans Zimmer's theme is truly inspiring.
@@andrewvincent7299 ……Also, I have Zimmer’s Man of Steel score, it is magnificent. I can’t wait to hear his scores for Bond and Dune.
