Repair Ford 7.3 Diesel engine that has no throttle response and or has issues accelerating, no power

  • My Ford truck started out having issues maintaining slower speeds in town, it felt like there was a dead spot in the accelerator pedal, and a mild dead spot at 50 mph. Sometimes it felt like it had no power at all. Later the truck started another symptom, it would occasional do nothing when pushing the accelerator / gas pedal. Pressing the pedal a few more times and eventually it would start working again.

A lot of peripheral parts to replace (all rear u-joints, hanger bearing, ball joints and hub bearings are next (u-joints there too of course). Between youtube and Rockauto, I spend a LOT of time in the garage. Thanks for the terrific tutorial.

    I bet if you're stuck at a red light with nothing but idle, you could unplug the "position sensor" switch and put a jumper wire in it and you'll take back off on your way home...
    That's jeep logic but it may work.

  • @Gavin_May

    I made a video explaining what causes the dead pedal on these old 7.3. The only way to tell is take the pedal out and see if the shaft that goes in to the TPS Has a lot of play in it. Mine had too much play in and the throttle position arm would overlap the throttle arm while engaging the idle switch giving me no throttle output.

    Find this pedal assembly and it was like trying to find a dinosaur. I was luckily able to pulled apart from several states away. They had one left in stock. I got lucky. Anyhow, I went to my local dealership to try to purchase the throttle positioning sensor and they told me that it does not come separate from the assembly. Did you buy that sensor after market? Also have you found a workaround to the idle sensor?

    Ok so I got the same thing on mine. Sometimes at a red light the service engine light turns on for a few seconds. When it comes on the peddle won’t work. It’s dead. • @1D10CRACY
      @1D10CRACY  4 года назад

      It sounds like the idle position sensor to me. When mine failed, the pedal was totally dead, then it would just start working on it's own. I don't recall if I had an engine light or not, but I have read other people have had the light with this failure. I could see the ECM tossing a light, as it would see TPS data, but still see the position sensor reading an idle position.

    Hey, I have the same issue with my 2012 Ford F750. At a certain speed a small red light would turn on and it wouldn't accelerate. Once I let go of the pedal the light turns off and I can try to accelerate slowly. Then I have to turn on cruise control just in case. But even with cruise control, it does the same thing when it reaches a certain speed. It just randomly happens. I already changed the whole pedal and it seem to go away for a bit but came back like a week or 2 later. Any suggestion on what it could be? It would help another since it's my work truck. My eld device says it's accelerator pedal position. But like i said i already chnaged it and it started doing it again randomly. Thank you.

    Dead 7.3 Pedal? Erratic Throttle? Could be the pedal! BUTT Check the loom laying on top of the drivers side shock. Funny place to put a open wire loom!!! Easy to access it anyway. Of the 4 looms its the closest to the air box. In my case small gauge wire Lt grey/white (looks darker dirty), Orange with black stripe (fuel pump circuit) When the grey wire gounded it would kill the pedal, and the orange would pop the 20 amp fuse (#40) Moisture was usually a factor. Easy to bush fix to get home to a warm shop and cold beer. The damage is close to the plug leaving little room for soldering so I bi-passed the plug with some extra wire, soldered and shrink sleaved.
