Ford 7.3 powerstroke diesel p1211 lacks power. Fuel restriction due to a failed fuel tank

  • With this video I try to show a way to test the fuel system quicker with more accurate results. Also find the cause of the code p1211 with a lack of power due to the tank lining coming apart causing a restriction in the fuel system.

I was a Ford Tech in the 90s and have to say I'd like to have met Ron. His videos are helpful to me quite often as reminders and new ways to test things often I had forgotten or hadn't been trained to test that way. I hope his family has found peace and remembers the good times and don't focus on the loss. I know and understand the feeling and the loss. Ty Ron

Thanks for posting this, had a P1211 on my truck with similar symptoms and it turned out that low fuel pressure due to clogged in tank screens was the issue. Easy to trouble shoot and a whole lot cheaper than an HPOP

You are just awesome Ron. I have 6 7.3's and one would not go over 40mph without smoking and not taking anymore throttle. I just lifted the dump bed, removed pick up from fuel tank and the filters were clogged bad in tank. Cleaned them and she runs good as new. We needed this truck running desperately today and you saved us. Dump trucks are great for jobs like this because lifting the bed is a lot easier than dropping tank full of fuel!

Ron-I own a 1999 F-250 Super Duty extended cab, automatic tranny, 7.3L turbo diesel w/ 345,000 miles. In the fall I was driving 35-40 mph in the city one day and all of a sudden it started hesitating and lost power like the engine was missing. I milked it home and let it sit for a few weeks. I tried to start it and it would fire but only started once or twice and then died. I charged the battery and got it started and chugged it down to O'Reilly's and they put it on the machine while it was running. The truck, after sitting in 1 of Nashville's coldest winter's on record starts every time now after I put it on a charge. it would not start even with a charge in the winter. It idles ok w/ rough idle but gains rpm's while revving engine in park. Runs rough/misses when I drive it around the block. I placed a 1.5 gallon can of diesel fuel in the front seat, hooking a plastic hose to the fuel pump, leaving the fuel tank bypassed and the original line to the fuel pump unhooked (it pumps diesel on the ground/road). Same symptoms: It idles ok w/ rough idle but gains rpm's while revving engine in park. Runs rough/misses when I drive it around the block. Could this possibly be the fuel screens in the tank as other websites suggest? Why would it run rough w/ the fuel tank bypassed if this were the case? I replaced the CPS on it and bowl fuel filter.

N9878F u are correct Ron is great. I have done this procedure many times on our ambulances. If the tank is not empty u can just pull the hose from the fuel pump, turn on the key and pump the fuel into a clean container. Drop the tank, clean the socks and refill the tank. Truck will run like new.

    Hi Ron,
    I'm having a problem with the P1211 code and lacking power. I have a 2002 7.3
F350 with a few modifications. It has a Tony Wildman six position power switch,
(Code still shows under hard acceleration when chip is removed). 4 inch
straight piped exhaust and an S&B free flow intake.
The Freeze Frame for DTC P1211 comes back as: MAP: 62.5 in
.hg, RPM 2387 r/min, Speed: 53MPH, and Absolute Throttle Position: 0%. The code
only comes on after a 3-5 seconds hard acceleration.
I have tested the fuel pressure under load, it sits very
steady at 65 PSI. I recently did an oil change and it still looks good (less
than 500 miles). It has a new Ford ICP installed and has been retested. IPR
looks good at 36% under load. Turbo has very minimal play. Replaced the EBPS and tube. I'm seeing normal
boost levels and my EGT runs at about 1050 F under hard acceleration uphill. A
    KOEO buzz test sounds good.
I just ran a KOER test and found I have DTC P0605. Spending
some time on autoenginuity, I believe I have found that the Barometer is not
functioning correctly. It is maxed out at 148 PSI and 4.66 Volts. Would this
cause the P1211 code? I assume this would lean out the motor, so I'm not sure
if this would cause power loss? Any help you could point me to would be
    appreciated.

get rid of the quick connect fitting from the pump to the tank, they will allow air into the system under negative pressure

  • @DieselTechRon
    @DieselTechRon  11 лет назад

Do you have an even crank? If not then possible knock or low compression. Is your oil the right type and right level? Too much whips up and gets air. too little causes poor performance. what is fuel pressure under a load? While it's happening?
Rocker arms do break on the 7.3 and if it is the exhaust then the compression sounds even while cranking. i have videos showing all this. fuel, compression test while running and uneven crank. What about blow-by? Wear to your turbo blades? inj test cold?

also for hpop pressure testing, im aware that higher pressure guage will be needed. Without warning my 2001 7.3 189k mile f350 has a crank no start cold, was running great, i want to to start with fuel pressures for now and for future issues. No check engine light but scanner found codes of 1211 icp, 0470 eps and 1249 wastegate control. Some of these should be from ts 6 pos chip, but no other mods. I plan on changing fuel bowl seals including regulator poppet etc. Got over 20 hrs of research online this weekend, gathering all info and items needed to get her back on the road, any input would be great, thanks again

Morning, the videos are great source of information ! I have a 1999 7.3 F350 Turbo diesel, went for inspection, failed for P1211, I have changed the ICP ( after-market brand) replaced the Air filter, and upper Fuel filter. Recently had oil change ( after way to many miles .... shame on me) I think they may have not used right oil, going to change again myself. Dual Batteries will be replaced 2016. I know they are not still great but working. Starts fine. Idle is little rough. Is missing under load a bit but runs like scalded dog if I step on it.... but just is rough sounding and seems to be some power loss. Have not checked the fuel screens at the fuel tank. looks like lot of work. What next here am I missing ?

Wow I wish I could bring you my truck @DieselTechRon seems like you actually have some knowledge about the 7.3 unlike my local dealer. My truck is just turned over 295000 miles it still runs but not well Iv tried many different things including checking the tank screens but I still have many small issues. Very low power turbo stall, very rough idle and sometimes missing completely. If you would have any interest in letting me bounce some idea off you please let me know I'd sure appreciate your expertise.

My truck is tapping/ticking away what is causing it? I get a p1211 code on hills with a load "trailer" if I get on it or keep it over 75mph cel light comes on then goes off after a while. I get a idle miss every now & then not bad but just a little skip that seems like it is one particular cylinder. If in neutral & I keep at 1200 rpms or so I have a miss. No other codes, no cel, pass buzz test & cct.

I have changed the egr valve, icp sensor harness, main engine harness, crank sensor, cam position sensor along with numerous other things. I had it checked from numerous experts but no results. It just shuts off at higher speeds and loses power, does restart right away though. Please help.

Changed upipes had a leak, no other exaust leaks, new fuel pump, filter,, hutch mod, fuel bowl rebuild. Guys tell me injectors but all symptoms I see for injectors are more obvious loud & or involve a hard miss & smoke. Does a weak or bad hpop cause a tapping/ticking sound? Sound is there at idle & under load, I also think I hear it at decel just not as loud as idle & accel. I asked before do powerstrokes normaly have a faint tapping/ticking sound on decel?

I got a 02 7.3. I put a bullydog 40420 on and on extreme setting it will throw the code only if the truck lugs down. Then a bunch of black smoke pours out and it sounds like it's starving for air. Any ideas? I was think maybe it's not getting enough air. Then I was reading it might not be getting enough fuel. Then I read it could be the turbo starving for oil. It doesn't do it all the time... Only when it lugs down say going up a hill.
