I told my nutritionist at the gym I was vegan and he said that I would find it hard to gain muscle and tone up. I was just like errrrrmmmmm no matey I think you need to touch up on your research! Great video guys your energy is amazing :D
Another benefit to plants that I noticed is that they make you lose weight faster than other foods. I started my weight loss journey with 1500 calories of all foods including meat, dairy and junk. I lost weight as long as I stuck to my calorie intake. But then I made the switch to plant based whole foods and I'm losing weight faster even though it's still 1500 calories. I have to eat more so I don't lose it too fast. How awesome is that!
Great video, guys! just what I needed to hear now my teenage daughter has decided to follow a vegetarian diet. You've dispelled a lot of myths for me 😀
Love this video :) It's great to show people you don't necessarily need meat to have a complete and fulfilling diet. Evidence shows the chemical profile of plant based diets are likely to have more benefits beyond the macronutrients! which is why we see reduced incidence of chronic disease in patients who eat tons of vegetables! Love your work guys!!
Loved this! So many people ask me that question and I love that I can now share the facts about how much an infant grows and how much protein is in breast milk. Fascinating!
Please link to the papers and guidelines you are referring to. It is nice to be able to read up on it before trying to convince other people. We have to be wise about the information we are spreading these days. Great video, and great message!
Love this. The vegans and vegetarians who do get sick are the ones who most likely rely on soy processed or processed frozen mock meats in general, and limiting or not eating real foods *veg, grains, fruits, seeds, nuts* (although i do believe soy that is not processed, like miso and organic tofu is amazing) really loving the series guys! keep it up :D eat the plant rainbow!
Firstly I’m a new subscriber...and loving your channel! I have to say I just love these type of informative videos about certain food types nd how how they benefit us...keep it up...love ya guys... cute too! 😍 😉
+Amy Tuohy Mainly dark green leafy veggies, for example spinach or broccoli. Or dried beans. I live in Germany and there is a super awesome juice that tastes brilliant, contains all kinds of different fruits and veggies and delivers 30% of your daily amount of iron. Also if you consume Vitamin C with it it helps with absorbing it :)
Listening and watching while drinking my smoothie of oat milk, bananas, hemp seeds, oats, and berries. Been plant based for about five years. Recently had lab work done and have found that my red blood count and white blood count and protein are below from where they are supposed to be. I usually add spinach or kale to my smoothies, but ran out. Would like to find out which foods I would need to increase to the increase the blood counts. I do have a hiatal hernia that prevents me from being able to eat much, so my meals are small. Having to survive on several small meals throughout the day.
How do you guys come up with those percentages of protein? If i look at spinach it says 2.9g protein pr. 100g and you guys 50%. How does that work? By the way vegan since October. I love it and I love you guys. Keep it up all 3!
ahhhhh i didn't know that you pears were vegan too! thought for some reason u were just vegetarian . love and support you even more now!! you have a great non-judgmental approach.. just fun healthy and yummmmy!
+Turboz Raw As far as I understand they are vegetarian but almost fully plant-based (not vegan). Veganism is an ethical stance (e.g. against the mis-treatment and use of animals (including human animals) in a harmful way). I saw a Q&A session with them and they definitely do not get the animal side of things (unless Tim Shieff managed to change their minds!! Here's hoping :)).
My friend lost some of her hair due to lack of protein, but was not hospitalized. You can also experience swelling (3rd spacing) if you do not get enough protein.
This was hugely informational. I have been toying with starting a vegan diet and this makes me feel much more comfortable about it. Thank you! Would you guys consider making a video about ways to get started on a vegan diet?
Just check you guys out. First video. Loved it. I'm pro athlete in Sydney and get this question all the time from coaches and team mates. I've been vegan for 3 years. Have you or can you do a video or bringing up a baby vegan, my wife and I are having a baby and are getting heaps of questions about what we are going to do. Love your work!!
Saw your show in Cork last week. Thanks for that. Still drooling over the dahl! I didn't know about heating the spices first! This thing about protein being in practically everything was also news to me, though I'd vaguely heard it somewhere and thought it was bogus at the time. It does make sense when you think about the veggie dinosaurs like Brontosaurus. How could something so huge manage without meat? Because plants have protein! Mind blown. :)
I must admit, I was quite prejudiced against vegan food. But you guys have made me want to give it a go! Next time I do a food shop, it's gonna be to your recipes! 🕺🏼🇮🇪
Becoming vegan has changed my life for the better. I'm more in tune with my body, my digestion is on point and I'm an overall happier person. While I still thoroughly enjoy making and eating vegan food, I put more emphasis on living a healthy life and have more of a balance. I've been a great cook and I actually found that since going vegan I have become 10x more creative in the kitchen. It took me solid 4 -6 months for my body to understand what was going on. I actually gained a solid 10 pounds, but started to even out after that. If you're considering a vegan diet, I highly recommend. Thanks for the videos dudes!
Wow Megan that's incredible!!!! We love to hear all your amazing stories 💚💚Thrilled that you find the vegan lifestyle so beneficial and we hope that our videos can inspire you 💚💚💚
The twins look great shirtless! YUM. Love the fur. I have to start again on switching to a mostly Vegan diet. But with Type 2 Diabetes, I need to stay low on the carbs overall.
I need a video on what is essential for every day. My husband and I recently stopped eating meat, but he has lost a lot of weight. What should I be feeding him since he has a very physically demanding job?
Love it! I would like to see more of these videos. I think it's important to be educated on all these questions that pops up as you go vegan!! Let's brake all the vegan prejudices! ☺️👏
Very informative video!! I always feel like I need to consumer more and more protein in my diet and today I have decided to try out being a vegan for a few days and see how my body feels. Also on average how many pieces of fruit do you eat per day?
Only thing im wondering about is a possible b12 deficiency. have a friend who is vegetarian, and he was low on b12. whats a good source for it besides fish etc? :)
+DanityFairMakeup A strong opinion is usually backs by a lack of information. Hopefully they're misunderstanding the situation and they turn it around.
I'd just like to ask what was your source of info that told you broccoli, spinach and asparagus were between 40-50% protein? To me that seems way too much...
+Ciara Delaney I have just read another comment which answered the question with this: By weight it's not 50% protein but by calories it is. Protein = 4 calories per gram, Carbs = 4 calories per gram, fat = 9 cal per gram. 23 calories in 100g of spinach. 2.9g protein x 4 = 11.6 calories just coming from protein. Which is like 50% of the total calories coming from protein. So it has a high proportion of protein but it's kind of meaningless considering how little calories is in spinach to begin with in comparison to all the calories you eat in a day.
thank you for answering my question on B12. I knew you could get plenty of protein via plant based diet. My only concern was the B12. Funny I just bought nutritional yeast last week to try. Thanks guys!!
I realised years ago that all foods have protein in when my sisters daughter was born with PKU and so protein is dangerous to them. They then have to have a special diet and measure every gram of protein out. I was surprised at how little protein she needed. It was so little that even a bag of crisps was too much ( not encouraging crisp eating here)
Would you have any recipe suggestions for folks on a medically prescribed low-carb, higher protein diet? I rely on a lot of smoothies with protein powder to meet my protein requirement for the day.
+Amanda Stanley Maybe try a broccoli soup, broccoli has 40% protein. Sometimes I'll sit down with a bag of mild spinach and eat it like a bag of crisps. Spinach has so much protein. You can get your needed protein out of the way and then eat regularly for the rest of the day. Pea Protein powder is very good, compared to regular protein powders. But that's the thing, it's made from peas, another plant that's dark green. :D Just be careful to monitor your iron levels too if you choose that route. :D
wow! I didnt know that! Always thought I am eating not enough protein... But sometimes it happens that I have a hunger for meat and when I eat then a big portion of tofu, I am fine... so maybe my hunger for meat is connected with low protein? Whatever... good to know that I dont need as much as I thought...
Been fully vegan for 6 ml tha had my bloods checked and iron, folate and b12 all came back perfect. Unlike my sister who eats a standard UK diet and she's anaemic and has low b12! VEGAN FOR THE WIN!!!
That's one thing I've wondered about vegan diet, there's no B12 source right? Nutr. yeast doesn't have enough for recommended daily allowance, so vegans usually need to take supplements for B12? If I'm wrong please tell me. I'm generally all for veganism, I think it's great.
Yes, you are correct. We also get B12 from fortified foods like plant based milks. In the beginning, I figured being vegan couldn't be that healthy if it's necessary to take supplements. Farmers also give their animals a B12 supplement.
interestingyoutubechannel B12 is a bacteria from soil. The farmers feed their animals pills for cheap why don't they sell us pills the same price they sell farmers??? Rip. Fermented and organic foods (pickels sourkroat) have b12 too.
great video! Love the accent! I was protein deficient ( as per blood testing and things i had noticed with my physical performance and health ) after 7 or so years raw vegan and 5 or so fruitarian...
Cows digest differently, not a good example. Anyway, proteins are not a problem, fats are, although the other way around. Vegetable fats are mostly unsaturated and our body can process those, animal/ saturated fats are stored as such and one needs a lot of activity to work them off.
I am going to sound really dumb T.T But I am making a slow transition to veganism so I need all the advice and knowledge I can get. I worry about not getting enough calcium, as my bones are so rubbish and achey (my family has a history of arthritis). I drink lots of rice milk and hazelnut milk etc. Could any one tell me what other foods contain a lot of calcium??
Good on ya for going vegan! Yep, eat almonds, kale (and other leafy greens, except spinach), dried figs, and hummus, and drink fortified vegan milks (e.g. soy milk) for calcium. You can, of course, take a supplement as well, if you wish.
This was a great video. It really was educational. I will never stop eating meat :P But I have changed my diet through the last year to at least having halfed my intake of meat, and I made a new best friend; Chickpeas. :) It is nice to know now that even though I do not eat a lot of meat, I get protein and other nutrients from so many other sources. (Apples? Who would have thought!) Thanks guys and other videos like this one is very welcome.
I'm not protein deficient, but I am underweight at the moment, and my doctor told me I should try and increase my protein intake... what do you think ?
+Jamie Lennon I know that, which is why I'm now being really careful and making sure I eat enough... All I wanted to know was whether protein can make me gain weight any faster, or more easily ?
+Jamie Lennon Yass, beans and lentils ftw ! it is a bit harder to get higher amounts of protein without animal products though, but if some bodybuilders can do it I think I'll be alright ;)
+Louellay You can increase your fat intake, maybe once or twice a week make porridge with a tin of coconut milk, it's so luxurious and fat tastic, it will give you enough calories to keep your body going til lunch, with change left over to help your body gain what it needs.
+SuperMe If your vegan and don't take supplements for it then you have a 98% chance of being deficient in B12 but it can take decades on a vegan diet before you actually become deficient as the body generates a little bit of its own and you can get it from things like marmite, nutritional yeast and some kinds of rice milk also have it. But its not a bad idea to take B12 even if you are not vegan as nearly 40% of Americans are B12 deficient.
+SuperMe Many people believe that B12 only comes from animal flesh and animal secretions (i.e. cow’s milk, chicken eggs…) when in fact it is solely bacteria-based. Fungi, animals and plants are incapable of producing B12 on their own and must obtain it from outside sources. B12 is synthesized by bacteria and is therefore found in areas of bacterial growth, namely dirt and soil. Humans have been getting their B12 from the dirt for hundreds of thousands of years by eating plants that still had bits of soil on them. Today however, we wash our fruits and veggies so well (and understandably so) that we no longer consume dirt or proper levels of B12. That’s where supplements come in. B12 is easily produced through bacterial fermentation and can be safely made into a daily supplement. Today animals don't eat grass from the soil, they eat GMO corn and soy....so even meat eaters are deficient...everyone should take a b12.
Yes, of course veggies have protein but meat has larger amounts of protein. I am training for a half marathon and I had much more speed and endurance while eating meat. B12 and iron deficiency is common in vegans! If you can tell me what vegetables have the equivalent amount of protein when compared to meat, that would be great!
+Mandy Li Nutritional Yeast will sort that out, most veggies and vegans keep a tub of this gold dust in their press, it has a cheesy flavour and it can me mixed into any dinner.
I completely agree with everything here, but I think it is important to be careful with percentage protein; spinach for example may have high percentages of protein in RELATION to its calories, but in terms of actual percentage of the mass (which will mostly be water) you consume, it is more like 3-4%. It is still easy to get the recommended protein though with a vegan diet, just by eating nuts, cereals, legumes and a variety of leafy greens/fruit and veg.
+JakeAndConorMusic Just to clarify though, most beans, cereals, nuts and seeds do contain around 10-30% protein by mass, which is equivalent to levels in meat.
I had a friend who was hospitalized because she was eating a plant based diet and lost weight as a result of not getting enough protein and carbohydrates. She was eating three full meals a day plus snacks and was feeling full because of all the fiber but apparently not getting enough! She was 15 at the time though, perhaps your needs are different even when you're a teenager and still growing? Not sure, what are your thoughts? Interesting video though!
not enough info to assess, as mentioned countless time not enough protein is hypothetical, however not enough carbs can def be a problem for new vegans, esp those who go raw or abstain from grains, then you need a well planned diet ... how many calories a day did she get?
I don't think she counted calories..she has anxiety so she thought it would be an unhealthy mindset for her personally. But because she was eating a whole bowl of veggies as a meal with some lentils thrown in it may have been lower in calories? She also ate quite a few salads in that time as well.
+Livi Wiles veggies and salads are great for minerals and vitamins but don't provide enough calories... grain based products or high calorie fruits are needed to have enough energy ... and if she has anxiety to that extent she may want to tackle that first or at the very least simultanously with diet change as it adversely impacts one's judgement ... an open minded GP would be able to help her
+Sam Horsman Hmm, I guess it's about a balance of things..after all you can't live on salad! She has been seeing a GP as an outpatient and is getting help for her anxiety. But I think "happy pear" speaks for itself - diet affects the way you feel significantly so I don't think she plans to return to the way she ate before, just make some changes to make sure she's getting enough. Thanks for all the info!
I told my nutritionist at the gym I was vegan and he said that I would find it hard to gain muscle and tone up. I was just like errrrrmmmmm no matey I think you need to touch up on your research! Great video guys your energy is amazing :D
It's definitely possible to gain muscle and you'll definitely look more toned, it'll just take more time, but it's not a race. ^_^
came for the nudity, stayed for the information
+goodsirknight :D :D :D
That's so true!! ^^
same, and subbed at the end
same here
The energy these guys have is completely contagious. Good one guys!!! xx
+RUF GLad it rubbed off on you. :D
These 2 are great! Love their energy and happiness, it's contagious! And of course Shieff is a ledge!

This was such an AWESOME video! new subbie, currently binge watching all your videos! Your energy is great and love the accent!
Amazing!! Welcome to the community!!
Amazing video and so helpful. I'm looking into changing my diet and this was a big question on my mind. Thanks Happy Pear!
Great video guys would love to see a couple of what you ate in a day videos for some veggie inspiration :)
Firstly I’m a new subscriber...and loving your channel! I have to say I just love these type of informative videos about certain food types nd how how they benefit us...keep it up...love ya guys... cute too! 😍 😉

Ah big love Minnie! 😄🙌💚
Always love when you make videos with Tim :D You guys are so funny together
We love having Tim around. Our vegan prince.
will you guys do a video on where vegans get their iron? so i can show it to my mother and get her off my back lol
got mine from Argos
+Amy Tuohy Mainly dark green leafy veggies, for example spinach or broccoli. Or dried beans. I live in Germany and there is a super awesome juice that tastes brilliant, contains all kinds of different fruits and veggies and delivers 30% of your daily amount of iron. +anfalas welchen Juice meinst du? :)
+Amy Tuohy put sugar-can molasses into your smoothie :) it contains about 17g of iron per 100g :)

you guys are off the rocker... in a totally good way!
I must admit from vegan cooking channels it is one of the best
ahhhhh i didn't know that you pears were vegan too! thought for some reason u were just vegetarian . love and support you even more now!! you have a great non-judgmental approach.. just fun healthy and yummmmy!
+Matt Matton The Blue One What do you mean?
+Matt Matton The Blue One How are they not vegan?
+Matt Matton The Blue One They literally said they were. I'm seeing a lot of 'not proper vegan' comments lately. Confusing. That's all.

Brilliant video you guys!
Can you do a video about the different kinds of tofu and how to cook them please? Tried to use silken tofu in a stir fry didn't go too well lol
Whoa, thank you so much for such an informative video! I've been vegetarian a few years and didn't know all this!
+Felix P. You learn something new every day. :D
Thanks for the information. Just one request, reduce the music while talking, it is difficult to follow after a bit.
Very informative, thanks!

Fantastic video, guys!
+Flaggkatten Thank you for watching. :D
I've had problems eating too much protein. Blood test continually showed this. I had it following a Bodybuilding recommended diet.
Game Changers out there will help with the preconceptions.
This is a great video 😃

this was amazing!! going to use that breast milk example on why we need protein next time someone asks me :) thanks for sharing guys!
I've heard of body builders paying big money for donated breast milk because of it's ability to build muscle so efficiently!
Do you guys then take supplements for calcium, iron, B12 etc?
Thanks guys!! By the way, looking great!!
Love it! I would like to see more of these videos. I think it's important to be educated on all these questions that pops up as you go vegan!! Let's brake all the vegan prejudices! ☺️👏

Excellent video guys..

No problem. I'm sure there's a lot more informative videos out there we just thought we'd share our views and results :)
Very informative video!! I always feel like I need to consumer more and more protein in my diet and today I have decided to try out being a vegan for a few days and see how my body feels. Also on average how many pieces of fruit do you eat per day?
I needed the info, but I couldn't put up with your silliness. So, I may read a book or look for the info in another channel :(
Thanks
Only thing im wondering about is a possible b12 deficiency. have a friend who is vegetarian, and he was low on b12. whats a good source for it besides fish etc? :)
Very important video. So glad you guys touched this. Did you see the today show on RTÉ trying to damn clean eating. Something about orthrexia???
+DanityFairMakeup A strong opinion is usually backs by a lack of information. Hopefully they're misunderstanding the situation and they turn it around.
+The Happy Pear fingers crossed they counter balance it with an appearance from a couple of Ireland's successful veggie shop/cafe owning twins 😜

thank you for answering my question on B12. I knew you could get plenty of protein via plant based diet. My only concern was the B12. Funny I just bought nutritional yeast last week to try. Thanks guys!!
How do you get your B12 vitamin?
In fortified no dairy milks and nutritional yeast! 😄😋🙌
That thumbnail though....good info. Actually quite helpful.
YES.

+tiffbott41 That's usually the way it works out, haha. It's so easy to spread the message when you're living proof of the results.
That's one thing I've wondered about vegan diet, there's no B12 source right? Nutr. yeast doesn't have enough for recommended daily allowance, so vegans usually need to take supplements for B12? If I'm wrong please tell me. I'm generally all for veganism, I think it's great.

well said guys!! steve is so excited, haha!
great video! Love the accent! I was protein deficient ( as per blood testing and things i had noticed with my physical performance and health ) after 7 or so years raw vegan and 5 or so fruitarian...
Xenia Aidonopoulou the only way you can be protein deficient is if you're actually starving to death
I suggest you do quite a bit more research into subjects before commenting on them...
Awesome video guys
I'm only two weeks in the vegan life choice.... I could never go back. Love it
great video!!! super informational. plant based diet FTW! :)
+Karina Melissa Plant based all day. :D
All my fave veggies seem to have a higher protein percentage. I love green veggies.
+Nali Singh Greens are great. Sometimes I sit down with a bag of mild spinach and eat it like crisps.
Should I use protein powder in smoothie after mild exercise or just leave it out I've been vegetarian for 5 years and just gone vegan four weeks ago x
Cows digest differently, not a good example. Anyway, proteins are not a problem, fats are, although the other way around. Vegetable fats are mostly unsaturated and our body can process those, animal/ saturated fats are stored as such and one needs a lot of activity to work them off.
love Tim!
Guys, Rob from Phoenix, AZ. What about Vitamin B?
+Robert Monton There are loads of good sources for B vitamins. We love adding nutritional yeast to our meals it's packed with b12
Great video guys!! #plantpower 🌱💪🏼
+Blueberrybite Thanks so much. :D
Sesame is actually higher in calcium than milk😊
This was a great video. It really was educational. I will never stop eating meat :P But I have changed my diet through the last year to at least having halfed my intake of meat, and I made a new best friend; Chickpeas. :) It is nice to know now that even though I do not eat a lot of meat, I get protein and other nutrients from so many other sources. (Apples? Who would have thought!)
Thanks guys and other videos like this one is very welcome.
Then just eat more protein?
What about B12?
+SuperMe We get our B12 from nutritional yeast.
+The Happy Pear 💪👍
+SuperMe All Bran cereals.
Great info as usual! Thanks for spreading the vegan love :D
+Unibrowpopcorn No problem. Thanks for watching!
Yes, of course veggies have protein but meat has larger amounts of protein. I am training for a half marathon and I had much more speed and endurance while eating meat. B12 and iron deficiency is common in vegans! If you can tell me what vegetables have the equivalent amount of protein when compared to meat, that would be great!
more videos of steve with his shirt off please!!!
what about vitB12 deficient ???
+Mandy Li Nutritional Yeast will sort that out, most veggies and vegans keep a tub of this gold dust in their press, it has a cheesy flavour and it can me mixed into any dinner.
+The Happy Pear I was watching on of your older videos that mentioned this....:) Thanks
Amazing, quirky & powerful! Loved it!!! Go the Cows, Horses, Giraffe's & Zebra's!!!
Can we talk about The thumbnail? 😅
Yes. Let's 😜
Hot! lol
I knowwww ...lol
