      +Amy Tuohy Mainly dark green leafy veggies, for example spinach or broccoli. Or dried beans. I live in Germany and there is a super awesome juice that tastes brilliant, contains all kinds of different fruits and veggies and delivers 30% of your daily amount of iron. Also if you consume Vitamin C with it it helps with absorbing it :)

    Another benefit to plants that I noticed is that they make you lose weight faster than other foods. I started my weight loss journey with 1500 calories of all foods including meat, dairy and junk. I lost weight as long as I stuck to my calorie intake. But then I made the switch to plant based whole foods and I'm losing weight faster even though it's still 1500 calories. I have to eat more so I don't lose it too fast. How awesome is that!

      That's one thing I've wondered about vegan diet, there's no B12 source right? Nutr. yeast doesn't have enough for recommended daily allowance, so vegans usually need to take supplements for B12? If I'm wrong please tell me. I'm generally all for veganism, I think it's great.

    • @mark_osborne
      @mark_osborne 7 лет назад

      I was also under the impression you could become B12 deficient, so I take a B complex vitamin-- but Tiffbott41 seems to disprove the theory

    • @neiya8862
      @neiya8862 7 лет назад +3

      Yes, you are correct. We also get B12 from fortified foods like plant based milks. In the beginning, I figured being vegan couldn't be that healthy if it's necessary to take supplements. Farmers also give their animals a B12 supplement.

    • @yes2542
      @yes2542 6 лет назад

      interestingyoutubechannel B12 is a bacteria from soil. The farmers feed their animals pills for cheap why don't they sell us pills the same price they sell farmers??? Rip. Fermented and organic foods (pickels sourkroat) have b12 too.

    Love this. The vegans and vegetarians who do get sick are the ones who most likely rely on soy processed or processed frozen mock meats in general, and limiting or not eating real foods *veg, grains, fruits, seeds, nuts* (although i do believe soy that is not processed, like miso and organic tofu is amazing) really loving the series guys! keep it up :D eat the plant rainbow!

    Becoming vegan has changed my life for the better. I'm more in tune with my body, my digestion is on point and I'm an overall happier person. While I still thoroughly enjoy making and eating vegan food, I put more emphasis on living a healthy life and have more of a balance. I've been a great cook and I actually found that since going vegan I have become 10x more creative in the kitchen. It took me solid 4 -6 months for my body to understand what was going on. I actually gained a solid 10 pounds, but started to even out after that. If you're considering a vegan diet, I highly recommend. Thanks for the videos dudes!

    Listening and watching while drinking my smoothie of oat milk, bananas, hemp seeds, oats, and berries. Been plant based for about five years. Recently had lab work done and have found that my red blood count and white blood count and protein are below from where they are supposed to be. I usually add spinach or kale to my smoothies, but ran out. Would like to find out which foods I would need to increase to the increase the blood counts. I do have a hiatal hernia that prevents me from being able to eat much, so my meals are small. Having to survive on several small meals throughout the day.

    I'm not vegan, but vegetarian. I don't ever bother thinking proteins or calories. Just eating stuff so I have enough energy AND enjoy chewing that food. I mean, there is so much "I have to do so" thinking. Struggling is not the way to go when it comes to your diet. It may take years before one can find the right meals that he both likes and gets the right amount of energy for the day.

      +Turboz Raw As far as I understand they are vegetarian but almost fully plant-based (not vegan). Veganism is an ethical stance (e.g. against the mis-treatment and use of animals (including human animals) in a harmful way). I saw a Q&A session with them and they definitely do not get the animal side of things (unless Tim Shieff managed to change their minds!! Here's hoping :)).

    Cows digest differently, not a good example. Anyway, proteins are not a problem, fats are, although the other way around. Vegetable fats are mostly unsaturated and our body can process those, animal/ saturated fats are stored as such and one needs a lot of activity to work them off.

  • @zeragito
    @zeragito 7 лет назад

    1) Big strong animals that get their protein from grass and other plants, also have a digestive system that vastly differs from humans. For example cows have four stomachs and regurgitate/re-ingest their food multiple times and this is why they can metabolize many more types and parts of plants than humans. Case in point cellulose (grass, leaves, roots, stems and peel) is indigestible 'fibre' to humans while animals can metabolize it into energy. We humans only have one stomach and a one-track digestion process so the range of plants we can metabolize (raw) into nutrition is limited to readily available carbohydrates and sugars. For example a human stomach can only handle eating a peeled banana while a gorilla can eat it unpeeled. With the invention of cooking, we humans have expanded our range of nutrition sources among plants by converting what would otherwise be inedible raw, such as potatoes, wheat, rice etc. into edible and digestible food. 2) While cooked grains, legumes, tubers etc. are a good source of carbs and proteins, most of the readily available amino acids and vitamins in fruits and greens are destroyed by the cooking process, so it's best to eat edible plants raw and let the enzymes in your saliva/stomach acids break it down into amino acids that the body can metabolize as protein and vitamins. If you want to get proteins and vitamins from spinach or tomato, eat it raw, don't cook it.

    I like Tim Shieff, never seen these other guys but they seem cool. I have some issues with this video tho and if someone would like to respond in a constructive way I would really appreciate it. I am all for veganism and recently tried to switch over because of animal rights. However, in the first week I gained 10lbs. Anyone who reads this probably thinks I'm lying but it's true. I'm 6'4" 245 (now 255) and my weight fluctuates like crazy. For example when I was really lean and on a strict diet, I drank heavily and binged ate one day and the next day weighed in almost 20lbs heavier. Granted I know most of it is water and given my size I can hold a lot but still. I'm also endomorphic and am extremely sensitive to carbohydrates and therefore insulin, so looking at carbs pretty much makes me gain weight. Now, going to the protein issue at hand, I am also extremely allergic to all legumes. Fun fact, I'm also very allergic to poultry so I've always gotten my protein from cows for the most part, with some fish. So, basically what I'm asking is if any other endomorphs out there have tried veganism and how did you do it/how do you look? I care about my body composition and the high carb vegan lifestyle does not suit that at all. I also hate when they talk about babies and what they eat because infants have an insanely high GH level, and we are gorillas or elephants so don't talk about that either. We are a different species and not only that but each one of us has a different genetic make up so every persons body acts and reacts differently. There is not one diet for everybody, I've always just tried to learn from others and experiment on myself to see what's best for me. Thank you in advance to anyone willing to respond.

    I completely agree with everything here, but I think it is important to be careful with percentage protein; spinach for example may have high percentages of protein in RELATION to its calories, but in terms of actual percentage of the mass (which will mostly be water) you consume, it is more like 3-4%. It is still easy to get the recommended protein though with a vegan diet, just by eating nuts, cereals, legumes and a variety of leafy greens/fruit and veg.

    • @jakeandconormusic3696
      @jakeandconormusic3696 8 лет назад

      +JakeAndConorMusic Just to clarify though, most beans, cereals, nuts and seeds do contain around 10-30% protein by mass, which is equivalent to levels in meat.

    I realised years ago that all foods have protein in when my sisters daughter was born with PKU and so protein is dangerous to them. They then have to have a special diet and measure every gram of protein out. I was surprised at how little protein she needed. It was so little that even a bag of crisps was too much ( not encouraging crisp eating here)

    I'm 100% with you on the message that you can get your protein reqs from plant sources, but the protein percentages you mentioned were all way off.
    I don't know whether you might be getting mixed up between the percentage of protein towards the RDA of a suggested serving, and the protein percentage of the food itself.
    For instance Watermelon, which would provide 3% protein (not 7%) from a serving of 280g as suggested by the Nutritional Labeling and Education Act, is not 3% protein, it's actually 0.007%.
    Brown rice is 2.3%, not 8%.
    Brocolli is 2.8%, not 40%.
    Spinach is 3%, not 50%.
    In fact, even if you are mixing up RDA amounts and protein percentages, it's still off by a massive margin.
    Now, I'm not saying you cant get your protein reqs from plant sources, but I think it's important to be honest and truthful here. If you eat plenty of beans, nuts, leafy greens and protein-rich grains, it's hard to be protein deficient. But a big part of this is re-educating people about their diets. Lets encourage plant based diets, but lets also encourage proper education about the nutrition of our food and not skew the facts. The last thing we want is a bunch of protein deficient vegans proving the common dogma about protein because they falsely believe that they don't need to be conscious about the protein content of their food.
    Peace&Love.

      Excellent remark. Indeed those number are wrong and very misleading. When an educated meat-eater watches this, they go "here they go again... those vegans saying lies to confuse people" Guys you should check your facts cause when you say wrong data like this. you lose credibility and you destroy the credibility of all vegans. You are public figures and have the duty to represent vegans worldwide. be informed and on point! Don't mislead.

    Saw your show in Cork last week. Thanks for that. Still drooling over the dahl! I didn't know about heating the spices first!
    This thing about protein being in practically everything was also news to me, though I'd vaguely heard it somewhere and thought it was bogus at the time. It does make sense when you think about the veggie dinosaurs like Brontosaurus. How could something so huge manage without meat? Because plants have protein! Mind blown. :)

    I'd just like to ask what was your source of info that told you broccoli, spinach and asparagus were between 40-50% protein? To me that seems way too much...

    • @DwarfCake
      @DwarfCake 8 лет назад +1

      +Ciara Delaney I have just read another comment which answered the question with this: By weight it's not 50% protein but by calories it is. Protein = 4 calories per gram, Carbs = 4 calories per gram, fat = 9 cal per gram. 23 calories in 100g of spinach. 2.9g protein x 4 = 11.6 calories just coming from protein. Which is like 50% of the total calories coming from protein. So it has a high proportion of protein but it's kind of meaningless considering how little calories is in spinach to begin with in comparison to all the calories you eat in a day.

    • @CiaraDelaney
      @CiaraDelaney 8 лет назад

      gargalesthesia thanks for answering! Yeah I wouldn't be promoting spinach, asparagus etc. based on their protein content.
