To me, this and The Muppets are my recommended films to introduce people to The Muppets. Christmas Carol's wonderful, but it's more a definitive Christmas Carol movie than a definitive Muppet film. I'd go so far as to say a lot of the scenes in the film work better when you actually know these guys and how their personas match the cast of the original book.

Fun Facts: The creator of the Muppets was Jim Henson, and his first character that was shown on television was Pierre the French Rat back in 1954. He also stated that he had been performing with puppets since he was a kid using sock puppets at school and parties. From 1955 to 1990, Jim was the voice of Kermit the frog, and lastly, he’s from the state of Mississippi which is also the home of Oprah Winfrey, Jerry Clower, and James Earl Jones.

Watched this movie when I was 4-years-old at the theater on a big 40' screen...
When Animal took the growth pills and grew in size, that scared the heck out of me!!!
I mean this movie was made before CGI was a thing, all the effects in it were practical.
They used camera tricks for some of the big Animal shots, but they also built an Animal Muppet that big for some shots and operated it with a crane! That thing was real, in a sense it was physically there. Scared me so bad!
Thing is, I loved the rest of the movie so much I kept asking my grandmother to take me to see it again, and to her credit, she did, every Saturday for as long as it was playing at the theater.
Whenever it started getting close to Animal's "big scene", I started feeling anxiety and right before it I would get up and leave the theater and ask the usher to tell me when that part was over. They always did that for me and came to recognize me and knew I'd be asking that.

The band They Might Be Giants had a bit during their concerts where the band would take a break, leaving just their drummer and one of the lead guys onstage. The lead guy would say a famous drummer’s name, and their drummer would imitate his style. The track I heard of this on their Best Of album had them going through Buddy Rich, etc., all the while the audience is chanting, “A-ni-mal! A-ni-mal!!” Finally, the drummer turned out a great imitation of Animal’s drumming style. Hilarious!

Nick, the Muppets started off as a 70s variety show that was the brainchild of Jim Henson, director of The Witches, Labyrinth and many more films. He was a visionary puppeteer who wanted puppets and marionettes to show more of a big range of emotions, so he used rods instead of strings to manipulate them (marionette/puppet = muppets). The Muppets are his most popular creation, but I think you’d really enjoy The Dark Crystal. It’s Jim Henson’s attempt at creating an epic in the style of The Lord of the Rings using only non-human puppet performers.

This is a perfect example of a perfect movie for families! If you like The Muppets, you'll definitely like this film. Even if you're not, it can still be a very great one to watch. It's very funny and very heartfelt. The new Muppet films during the 2010s decade were actually my first introduction to them, but I wanted to check out their other films. I really enjoyed seeing the entire Muppet gang getting together in their first movie like Kermit, Fozzie, Gonzo, Animal, and Miss Piggy. The songs, Rainbow Connection and Movie' Right Along, are such memorable songs. Again, this is a very great family film.
Other Muppet films you should check out are Muppet Treasure Island, Muppets from Space, The Muppets (2011), and Muppets Most Wanted.

Also, please consider watching the 1994 comedy Clerks. So excited to catch this today. Enjoyed your reaction to The Rainbow Connection song (opening and closing). 😊There is actually a Muppet Show prime-time television comedy series from the 1970s which includes most of the cast shown in this movie along with a lot of Special Guest Stars. I'm sure you noticed many of the supporting cast were guest cameo appearances.🤩 Prior to the show and this movie, the Children's Television Network premiered Sesame Street on PBS. Kermit and Big Bird (the yellow bird that was going to New York) were the first two Muppets I remember... And yes, there are more Muppet Movies beyond the one with Amy Adams; please include "Muppets Most Wanted" in your list.

Not coincidentally, the only other one with Paul Williams songs. (That's Paul as the saloon piano-player, btw, while Kermit is doing his own stunts.) And yes, the Muppet Show variety series, now streaming on Disney+, spawned the 70's movie, whose list of famous human guest stars prompted the famous human cameos in the movie.

I love this movie. I grew up watching the Muppets movies. The Great Muppet Caper is the first one I remember
watching on tv in 85 but I grew up watching the original and the others on VHS. This movie is as old
as I am. Kermit was my favorite as a kid, but Gonzo has been my favorite since The Muppets Christmas
Carol. Jim Henson will always be my Kermit. The others that came after Henson died didn't sound right to me.
You wouldn't know him but Edgar Bergen who was a well known American ventriloquist guest starred in the movie along
with his puppet character Charles McCarthy. He was in a tv show my parents watched in the 50's.
Edit: If you ever react to very old movies, I'd love it if you reacted to one of the Marx Brothers movies. They're very funny.
The Animaniacs I'm pretty sure were inspired by them. Speaking of Animaniacs, I'd love it if you reacted to Wakko's Wish.
Also the Muppets were in a lot of movies when I was a kid in the 80's. After The Muppets movie there was The Great Muppet
Caper in 81 and The Muppets Take Manhattan in 84. There's several more after that but they weren't in Henson's lifetime so I'm meh
on them. The only one I like a lot is The Muppets Christmas Carol (1992) which I have mixed feelings on. It's a great movie but I found out
that Jim Henson died from watching the credits in the theater. The entire movie I knew that Kermit sounded different but I didn't know why.

I hope this means you’ll go through the different movies. This movie is basically a self made movie by the muppets about their own backstory on how they met
The muppets show was a puppet show on tv for a long time with celebrity guests. Basically SNL with puppets.
They made this movie to give the characters backstories.
In other films after this they either have them be themselves or be characters
Cause there’s movies like Muppets from Space where they are themselves and Gonzo tries to find where he came from cause he’s a whatever and the Great Muppet Caper where thieves frame the muppets for stealing a diamond
Then theres my favorite ones Treasure Island and Christmas Carol where it’s the muppets playing characters like Kirmit being Bob Cratchet who works for Scrooge
In all their movies they have celebrities play a character (or sometiems themselves like my favorite line in almost all of them “You kid napped Jack Black?”
Basically the first movie works if you already know who the muppets were

They also showed up frequently on The Ed Sullivan Show throughout the 60s. Then when I was 10 in 1970 Sesame Street started. A lot of the humor was aimed at my age group to prevent older siblings from changing the channel on the target group. They were in holiday specials and the first season of SNL. Then the found a British producer to syndicate their own show and worked out of England for a while. Lew Grade also produced their movies. Of course, we went to see them. And this movie is a tremendous way to be introduced to them. If you’re looking for a way to define their style, I’d say it’s mostly a variety show style with an occasional narrative thrown in (especially for the movies). The reason they start showing us that they already made the movie before showing us the story if hiw they made the movie, is because the Muppets had been a staple on prime time television for awhile and this movie was meant to be the "origin story" of how they became the stars that they were known as.

If you enjoyed this movie, check out “The Muppet Show” from the 70’s. It actually predates this movie, so most people were already familiar with the characters before seeing the movie. “Sesame Street ,” a tv show for preschoolers, came out in 1969 and heavily features Muppets (including the tall yellow one you saw in the movie named Big Bird). Even though “Sesame Street” is for a young audience, I say check it out to see famous Muppet characters such as Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, and Elmo, to name a few.

Fact: Kermit and Piggy had a pretty healthy relationship (Depending on your point of view) until in 2015, right around the time ABC's The Muppets was about to air in 2015 (which was a show that was like The Office) Kermit and Piggy sadly broke up because they wanted their own separate things, like for example, she wanted Kermit to quit taking baths in the sink. But, if you want to know what really happened, them guys over at The Muppet Studios thought it would be a good plot narrative for the show, and were CLOSE to getting back together, but sadly, the show was cancelled after only one season. And they're still not a couple, at least as far as I know. Not sure if there's anything different, but that's all I know about the situation.
#2 I enjoyed how you kept pointing out how The Muppets are so expressive, that's the magic of The Muppets for ya, Nick

Kermit was on the Public Broadcasting Service show Sesame Street. The giant yellow bird they pass on the road is Big Bird, also from Sesame Street. The show is produced in New York, which is why Big Bird didn’t go with Kermit and Fozzie to Hollywood. Later, Jim Henson, creator of The Muppets, created a muppet variety show called The Muppet Show. The characters in this film are from that show. The idea was that the muppets put on a variety show in the old Muppet Theater and featured a different human guest star each week. This is their first theatrical feature film. There have been many since. Being muppets, they had always been shown from the waist up. It was very impressive when we see Kermit riding a bike and dancing with Fozzie. Look up the guest stars in this film. It is quite the impressive line up. The piano player in the bar is Paul Williams. Paul wrote the songs for this film, as well as dozens of award winning songs for many recording artists. I love Gonzo’s song “I’m going to back there some day.” Look up episodes of The Muppet Show and elements and characters will make much more sense.

Their super popular TV variety show was full of bad gags and songs, and always with a special guest star, from Vincent Price to John Cleese to, well, everybody! Back in the day they were a legitimate phenomenon. The setting was a vaudeville theater with the show run by Kermit, and the two old men would sit up in the balcony and heckle everyone.
So it made sense to fans that they had already "made it" and this was the story of their rise to stardom. The big yellow bird they passed in the road was Big Bird, star of the children's TV show Sesame Street, which featured an entirely different set of muppets--except for Kermit, who appeared on the kid's show AND the adult variety show.
You don't think about them being with humans. They just are. You need to see some of the TV show.
Disney bought the Muppets from the creator, Jim Henson, and haven't really managed them very well. They're practically in mothballs because they don't know what to do with them.

When this movie came out in 1979, it was right in the middle of when *The Muppet Show* was doing a 5 season run on TV. It was one of the most popular shows in the world at that time.
Paired with *Sesame Street* which also features Jim Henson's Muppets, which was the biggest televison show for preschoolers at that tkme and still is pretty big today.
The Muppets are very very special to me...
The Muppets first began in the late 1950's with a genius of a man named Jim Henson. He was only in his teens himself at the time.
A local TV station in Washington D.C. was looking for a short little easy to produce show to air. Jim Henson came in with his idea of Muppets and started the show *Sam and Friends.* Kermit was a part of the show even then but his character was still being ironed out, he wasn't even called a frog yet.
Sam and Friends was only on in Washington D.C. on that one station, and each episode was only roughly 5 minutes long.
My mother and her side of the family all grew up in D.C. and the D.C. suburbs. My mom was a teen herself then and her and my grandfather fell in love with Sam and Friends right from the start.
The popularity of that show put Jim Henson on the map and he started getting asked to bring his Muppets and perform on variety showed that aired nationwide.
In 1969, the Children's Television Workshop asked for Jim Henson's help creating a television show for preschool age children to teach them numbers and letters but also how to deal with feelings and things like sharing and kindness. That show was *Sesame Street.*
Jim Henson felt that he wanted to do things with his Muppets that aren't just for preschoolers. He wanted to make entertainment that all ages could enjoy.
He started doing Muppet specials, using his muppets to tell fairy tale stories, like The Frog Prince (of course!) but also Cinderella and the Musicians of Bremen.
He was even asked to do a recurring muppet sketch for adults during the first two seasons of the late night show, _Saturday Night Live,_ that was called "Land Of Gorch".
During this time Jim Henson kept trying to get a deal to do a weekly Muppet variety series but even after getting a couple pilots made, the TV networks had no faith in him. However, this one production company in England loved the idea and told Henson if he brought his team over there, they would produce his show. He did so, and in 1976 *The Muppet Show* was born. It was shown in England, but also in the United States in first run syndicstjon. It became a HUGE hit, everyone loved it!!!
I was born in 1975 and in 1978 we became one of the first families in the neighborhood to have a vcr, a Sony Betamax. My mom recorded all sorts of cartoons and kids specials for me to watch over and over. She also recorded The Muppet Show, she still remembered how much she loved The Muppets when they did Sam and Friends and she passed that love down to me. She recorded The Muppet Show every week and those were my absolute favorite!!! I watched those tapes so many times I almost wore them out!
I also loved Sesame Street, though we didn't record that, it was on every day and I watched it as it came on.
In 1979 *The Muppet Movie* came out. I loved it so much!!! My grandmother was so great, I kept asking to see it again and again and she would take me to the movies every Saturday to see it again while it was playing.
When George Lucas was ready to make *The Empire Strikes Back* he asked for Jim Henson's help with this one important character. Jim himself was too busy, but his friend and one of the Muppeteers who had been with him the longest, Frank Oz, was available. Frank Oz was the performer and voice of Miss Piggy and Fozzie Bear among many other muppets and then he also became the voice and performer of Yoda.
When *Return of the Jedi* came out Oz helped again with Yoda and Henson's company also helped with some of the other aliens in Jabba's palace.
As I grew up I stayed attached to the Muppets and Jim Henson following everything they did...Like the other Muppet movies, *The Great Muppet Caper,* and *The Muppets Take Manhattan* which are also great and I also loved, just not as much as the first movie.
Henson also continued to make wonderful Muppet TV specials, like when the first movie came out they did a special called *The Muppets Go Hollywood* which was like just a huge party celebrating the premiere of the first movie. When the second movie came out he made the TV special *The Muppets Go To the Movies* which was like an hour long episode of the regular Muppet Show (normally they were just a half hour long) but focused on recreating scenes from classic movies but with Muppets and also throwing in clips from the new movie. Henson and his company made a bunch of heartwarming Christmas specials! *John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together,* *Emmett Otter's Jug Band Christmas,* and, in my opinion the best special they ever made, *A Muppet Family Christmas.*
Then Jim Henson wanted to make more experimental movies and he made the very unique fantasy films *The Dark Crystal* and *Labyrinth.*
    I
Meanwhile Frank Oz had become a great director in his own right making movies like *Little Shop of Horrors,* *Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,* *What About Bob?* and he even co-directed *The Dark Crystal* with Henson and completely directed the third Muppet movie, *The Muppets Take Manhattan.*
After *The Muppet Show* finished its run, Henson and his company had subsequent TV shows like *Fraggle Rock,* the animated series, *Muppet Babies,* and *The Jim Henson Hour.*
Henson's Creature Shop also was pivotal in making the Turtle suits and other effects for the first live-action *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles* movie!
In 1990 a terrible thing happened. Jim Henson passed away. He was only in his fifties but he had a lingering cold and he continued working to exhaustion and neglected getting medical attention early enough. The cold turned into pneumonia and by the time he went to the hospital he was in too bad a shape and he died.
I remember coming home from school that day and finding out. I felt like I had been gut punched hard! I couldn't believe it, it felt like I lost a family member.
A few weeks later Frank Oz and all the other people who worked with Jim and were almost as big a part of the Muppets as he was, made a tribute special, *The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson.*
I was 15 at that time and while I didn't think I was tough, I did think I was past being overly sensitive as I was when younger. I remember watching the special...I was all by myself and when it got to the end... *I was ugly crying* !!! It just _hurt so bad_ but at the same time I was so touched by this wonderful tribute special. The special was also the first time we got to see Kermit voiced and operated by someone who wasn't Jim. Kermit made only a brief appearance in the special, his voice was close but not quite right, but still it felt like even with Jim gone, Kermit lived on.
A couple years later they made the first Muppet movie without Jim, *A Muppet Christmas Carol.* I think it was a wonderful choice to pick this story! Not only did they make a great movie but it was a statement the Muppets would all live on. The warm sentiment of the movie also felt like a healing balm to sooth the hurt from Jim's passing.
The Walt Disney Company began to acquire The Muppets and The Jim Henson Company shortly before Jim Henson's passing, and continued to do so after. The projects they've put out since being owned by Disney have been a mixed bag. When people who had been with The Muppets since before Disney and/or people who loved The Muppets and understood them were in charge, we usually got something pretty good to great, like *The Muppets,* the 2011 movie. But I think as corporate Disney takes more and more of hand in things the projects don't turn out that well and the property suffers.
I more than highly recommend watching The Muppet Show, I supremely recommend it!!!
The show is amazing, the writing, the music, the performances, the amazing guest stars...you get to see so many wonderful performers who are no longer with us (George Burns, Dom Deluise, Peter Sellers, Liberace to name a few) and other performers we thankfully still have but in their prime (Steve Martin, Elton John, Mark Hamil to name a few).
Also, if you plan on watching the 2011 Muppets movie, it's kind of an homage/tribute/reboot of *The Muppet Show.* It would make the movie much more meaningful if you watched a few episodss first.
My pesonal top 10 list of favorite Muppet Show episodes:
    1. *The Stars Of Star Wars*
    2. *Elton John*
    3. *Steve Martin*
    4. *Alice Cooper*

I am so sorry for this way-way-way-too-long-comment! But I just felt a need to explain what The Muppets and Jim Henson has meant to me and how happy it made me to see you react to this movie!
I sincerely hope you do check out other Muppet movies (and maybe even The Muppet Show and those specials). It's not the same as when you get into The Muppets as a kid, but I still believe there is so much to get out of them at any age!
