The true backstory of why Scrooge hates Christmas is tragic. His father hated him because he loved his mother and Scrooge's mother died giving birth to him so he sent him away to boarding school as soon as he could and never let him come home for holidays. The only one who cared for Scrooge was his sister (Fred's mother) who also tragically died giving birth to Fred which is why he doesn't like him.
No, that is not the true backstory. That is a version of the story depicted in some movies based on the book (notably Alastair Sim's version - which is another great movie version despite this critique of it). In the book it doesn't tell us how his sister died or his unmentioned mother. We know his mother didn't die in Scrooge's birth because his beloved sister is younger then him. In point of fact we're not told at all why Scrooge's dad was mean but then became nice. That wasn't the point of the story. The point was that Scrooge needed to remember both the tragedy, the happy escape, a sister's love, and who his nephew should be to him.
In fact, the book never gets into the details of Scrooge's descent, other than a vague reference to how hard the world can be on the poor. Movies frequently try to fill this in, but the book doesn't care about why it happened, but why it shouldn't be that way.

Despite being a Muppets movie, it still manages to stay true to the original Christmas Carol story while still putting their own spin on it. The casting of the characters is perfect. Michael Caine is a pretty good Scrooge as he fits the character very well. The writing is absolutely genius and the jokes are very hilarious. This is a really great movie to watch on Christmas.
This is actually the most accurate movie adaptation of the book
The puppetry is amazing, as with all Henson projects, the songs are great, Michael Caine is a great Scrooge, and I love how many lines from the book they put in. I just wish the version with the sing "When Love Is Gone" was the default option, instead of buried beneath it on the selection page where hardly anyone will find it. It adds so much to Scrooge's development and ties back into the song at the end.

Fun fact: There's only one Marley in the original Christmas Carol story. Robert Marley was created solely so they could use Statler and Waldorf together. I find it amusing because you could technically call the new character "Bob Marley"
"I'm sure we shall never forget Tiny Tim or this first parting there was among us." The puppeteers must have been thinking of Jim Henson and Richard Hunt, both of who passed away not long before they filmed this movie. 🥺
This has always been my favorite adaptation of A Christmas Carol. It's close to the original, and they use many exact/similar words that Charles Dickens used. For example, the line "There's more of gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are!" is an actual line from the original story. The Muppets don't dumb it down for the kids, either.
And when Michael Caine was working with the Muppets, he said, "I'm going to play this movie like I'm working with the Royal Shakespeare Company. I will never wink, I will never do anything Muppety. I am going to play Scrooge as if it is an utterly dramatic role, and there are no puppets around me."
I have also read the Jim Henson biography by Brian Jay Jones, and it's fantastic. Highly recommend it! Jim really cared about his family and the people he worked with. He always saw their work as a collaborative effort.

Richard Hunt and Jim Henson were the original puppeteers for Statler and Waldorf respectively, and those Muppets played the parts of the Marley brothers in this film.
While the opening caption was a homage to the two legends of the Muppets, one can also read it as "The Marleys were dead, to begin with."

I also remember reading in the biography by Brian Jay Jones that Christine Nelson, the daughter of puppeteer Jerry Nelson, battled cystic fibrosis. When Jim Henson discovered that their insurance company at Henson Associates would no longer pay for Christine's medical expenses, Jim changed insurance companies to one that would. And when Jerry thanked him for what he had done, Jim simply replied, "That's what insurance companies are for."
I'm so happy you reacted to this! This movie is usually described as one of the best Muppet movies, as well as being one of the best depictions of the Christmas Carol story. One fun thing was Michael Caine made the choice during production that he was going to play the entire movie completely straight, as though nobody else in the main story was a talking puppet. It adds a level of hilarity and sincerity to this movie. The songs are also AMAZING, so I'm so happy you enjoyed yourself! Muppet movies are at their core meant to be fun and heartfelt. So if you have a good time watching them, then you're doing it right! Also don't worry about not loving every single Muppet- everybody has a favorite! Happy Holidays, Nick!

I heard "It Feels Like Christmas" playing on a store radio and it immediately brought a huge smile to my face
michael caine, treating the muppets as real people, really raised the quality to another level.
This was filmed after the death of Jim Henson so it added to why this movie is heart breaking.
Tiny Tim is the most wholehearted and wholesome character in the Christmas Carol story!
It looks like you watched the theatrical cut of the movie. The extended cut (which I prefer) has the song "When Love is Gone" sung by Belle to Scrooge when she leaves him. If the breakup scene in the theatrical got you emotional, the full sequence with that song there is going to kill you. The closing song "When Love is Found" is actually meant to be a happy reprise of that cut song. If you watched this through Disney+, pull up the "Extras" tab and you'll have the option of either watching the song by itself or as part of the whole film.
This is my absolute favourite Christmas movie and I watch it every December! I just love the cast, the songs and just everything about this film is so beautiful and an entertaining thing to see. Loved your reaction Nick and have a great Christmas!

Yes! I can't wait to see your reaction to the live action Beauty and the Beast, I went to see this movie in theaters with my mom and sister back in 2017.
I had never seen this movie before last year despite loving the muppets. I was horrified at how loudly I started sobbing over a puppet frog when Kermit talks about how Tiny Tim’s grave looks over the river and how he loved watching the ducks. But such a great movie!
(If you haven’t seen Muppet Treasure Island I highly recommend that. Where Michael Cane played this so seriously in this, Tim Curry plays his role with pure hilarity. And Tim Curry has often said that Muppet Treasure Island is his favourite movie of his).
Aw dang, you missed the song that Belle sings that really hits home "the love is gone." They cut that song and scene out because they believed it would be too sad after theater release. But this Christmas Carol is such a dear classic that I'm glad to watch finally after so long

Michael Caine was the best choice for Scrooge. He was the only human actor on set, and much like Tim Curry in Muppet Treasure Island, he treated his costars like equals, not just puppets.
I mean, Fred and Clara were human, too. But i get your point.
The line "Leave the comedy to the bears!" refers to the stick in The Muppet Show that Starler and Waldorf (who plays Jacob and Robert Marley) heckles Fozzie Bear (who plays Fozziwig, which is a pun on Fezziwig from the book) for his "bad" jokes.
When you rewatch it, find the version that has the song called "When Love is Gone" included; it makes the movie even better.
It started as a yearly tradition when i was a kid to watch this movie with my parents around Christmas time. Now that I have a family of my own it has carried on over and now my kids beg to watch it at least once a year. Words cant explain how much I adore this movie and how much it means to me. The songs are actually WAY better than they have any right being, the soundtrack of this movie goes so hard

My Mom's a nut about the Muppets so this was a classic growing up. I love your reaction to this and so happy you enjoyed it. Mickey's Christmas Carol is also a good make of it, shorter, not a musical, but nice.
This is maybe my favorite version of A Christmas Carol.
I loved Rizzo and Gonzo but I see your point. The story/Michael Caine was SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!! Makes me cry every time, 20 views in all. I'm not sure if you saw the version with the song by Belle or not but Scrooge's fiancee, Belle, sings a song as she leaves him called The Love is Gone. It is HEARTBREAKING. And, the studio heads thought it would disturb kids too much so they removed it. But, the 'real' version is out there, and it really ties things together more.
Jim Carrey’s Christmas Carol is pretty good too. I enjoyed the CGI in that version.
It teeters a bit on the edge of uncanny valley. But it is probably one of the most accurate to the books. So many lines pulled straight out. And it includes “humanity’s children” which most versions leave out.
Though I will admit it goes a bit off the rails during the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come part.
Finally Nick reacts to the muppets a Christmas carol I’ve wanted for him to react to this for a while.
This is even hard for me to admit, but this one was tough for me to watch this time around because 13 years ago this month (back in December 2010) my dad passed away from Lou Gerhigs disease, then just last year December 2022, my oldest brother was run off the road and broke 7 ribs, then on the exact day (both of the week and day of the month) of our dad, he had a heart attack and passed away. So the scene of Tiny Tim not being there in the Christmas to come hit me hard, it was a double whammy.

This is one of my most favorite Christmas movies. Also, I'm convinced the Fozziwig joke was the first one they wrote (Scrooge's boss in the book is Mr. Fezziwig, so naturally Fozzie was the perfect character choice).
If you haven't seen it, I also recommend the Muppet Treasure Island movie. Muppets rarely miss, honestly...

To be honest, the real reason Scrooge never went home was much sadder in the original book since they actually went over it, but I can’t remember if there is a movie version that goes over it. Though if you ever get a chance, you might like the Mickey Mouse version of this story or better yet Robert Zemeckis’s A Christmas Carol. (Sorry, I would recommend other versions but those two and this one are the only adaptations I’ve seen).

I saw this on Disney + last year.
it's funny because i've never thought about it before, but i expect rizzo is more for the folks in the audience who know the story of a christmas carol back to back/have grown up with it, so he adds a bit of a diversion from a formula we might be bored with. whereas for people who aren't as familiar, he's kind of distracting/pulling you out of the moment! that's so interesting to consider, wow, what a great reaction - i'm so glad you loved the music, it really does elevate the film. i've always loved how spooky the score gets sometimes, especially the scenes in scrooge's house and the graveyard.
Jim Henson would’ve loved it had he lived. He passed a few years before this released and fellow Muppeteer Richard Hunt would follow him not long after. He attended Jim’s memorial service too.

favorite xmas movie ever. Ive watched many versions of A Christmas Carol and none of them hold a candle. Rizzo is my favourite - i think his 4th wall breaking and comedy really lighten the story up. It's so dark otherwise. Happy holidays!
Three things that I feel make this a great movie:
1) Much of the dialogue is from the original source material, "A Christmas Carol"
2) Michael Caine's decision to treat this role as a serious one and portray it, in his words, as if he was performing in the Royal Shakespeare Company. Frankly I think that just makes the story even better.
3) Using original characters for the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Using preexisting muppets would have undermined the story. Heck they were going have Robin or Scooter as the Christmas Past, Miss Piggy as Christmas Present and Animal as Christmas Yet to Come.

This is a delightful version of A Christmas Carol! Glad you enjoyed it. It’s second only to the black and white Alistair Sim version in my mind. If you’re going to do another muppet movie, I definitely recommend Muppet Treasure Island

I grew up reading the original book. It's a fun experience watching it with someone who is experiencing the wonder of A Christmas Carol for virtually the first time. I also find Michael Caine's performance much more intriguing than the goofiness of the Muppets.
I love this version of "A Christmas Carol." However, the Disney Plus version took out the song Belle sings to Scrooge when she breaks up. It was called "When Love is Gone". There's a reprise at the end, but it really explains Rizzo's sobbing his heart out before Scrooge returns from the past.

In the book, there's only Jacob Marley. They added in Robert so that Waldorf could be part of the act. His name is a play on the Reggae-artist Bob Marley.
The only great Christmas Carol movie I've seen and I've seen many. The extended version is even better!

The book he referred to was A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. It's a great book to read at Christmastime. I collect videos of all versions of A Christmas Carol/Scrooge. Each one brings it's own spin on it and it's great to see all the different ones. I recommend watching lots of versions. Great reaction! I subscribed!
my all time favorite Muppet movie is Muppet Treasure Island, with Tim Curry as Long John Silver! this is my second favorite Muppet movie, and my 3rd favorite version of A Christmas Carol. my first is Scrooge (1970), and the second is A Christmas Carol (1999) with Sir Patrick Stewart as Ebenezer Scrooge.

The backstop of scrooge is a bit too dark for a kids story. If you can find it there is an old black and white movie starring Alastair Sim that does a very good portrayal. Its called Scrooge, A Christmas Carol. It's my 2nd favourite a Christmas Carol after the muppets of course.
They cut a song from this version as well, sung by Belle scrooge fiance. They cut it because it was the only song not involving a muppet so they thought kids wouldn't like it. But it's so much more impact full with the song. If you are watching on Disney plus it has it as a deleted scene. If not I recommend watching it on RUclips. It really is a shame it isn't in the movie
This is just a great Muppets movie and a phenomenal adaptation of A Christmas Carol.
This movie planted the seeds of Gonzo and Rizzo being a dynamic duo in the future. The only reason Rizzo was probably added was for comic relief and jokes for younger audiences, not that I’m necessarily complaining. I’m just happy the filmmakers knew to use the “Shoo out the Clowns” trope so the future part would be taken more seriously.

There is deleted scene, of slow song of, When love is gone for dumb reasom. When Belle singing and leaving the young Scrooge. And it's was sad, she singing and the old Scrooge crying while singing behind her, for what he done.
This is the only Muppet movie i watch tbh, although my whole family loves them (my mum and uncle call each other miss piggy and gonzo 😅) i always found them a little scary as a kid 🤷♀️ this movie though i absolutely love, one of the best Christmas carol movies 😊 have to agree with you on rizzo, some of his comic relief is appreciated but other times it's a little jarring

This movie is dedicated to the creator of The Muppets, founder of The Jim Henson Company and the original puppeteer of Kermit, Rowlf, Dr. Teeth, Waldorf, The Swedish Chef, Ernie and so many more Muppets, and Richard Hunt, who performed Scooter, Janice, Gladys the Cow, Sweetums, etc. Henson passed away in 1990 of Streptococcus pyogenes (first mistaken for bacterial pneumonia), while Hunt passed away in 1992 due to AIDS -related complications (which happen to affect and kill off several homosexual persons, Hunt was a homosexual, AIDS and homosexuality hsppened to be a hot topic during the 80's and early 90's).
This film had a few songs cut from the theatrical release (still on the soundtrack though), and yet another song was cut for the DVD, which I think was a very poor choice. It was a song sung by young Scrooge's fiancee Belle, better explaining why she was leaving him, and a beautiful song at that. Taking the song out also made the cut to Rizzo and older Scrooge crying feel a bit awkward. The final song is a little different on the soundtrack too, starting with:

A sad fact revolving around this film was that it was the first ever Muppets project done without Jim Henson (the man responsible for the Muppets, Sesame Street, Dark Crystal, and more). He sadly passed away two years prior to this film's release. The scene where Kermit as Bob Cratchet saying goodbye to Tiny Tim was also representing the cast, crew, and his son Brian (who made his directorial debut with this film) saying goodbye to him (as well as Richard Hunt, who was a fellow Muppetier who had been there since the beginning).
With that said, on a lighter note, this film was originally supposed to be just a TV special until Disney finally caught wind of what they were planning and had them make a full length feature film because they loved the idea so much.
This film is one of my favourite Christmas Carols of all time and thank you for all the videos this year God bless you and Merry Christmas nickflix 🎄🎅🌟👍
This was so much fun to watch! I love seeing you experience this for the first time, especially without much history with the original story. It added so much to it, because you were reacting to the story as well as the movie. A Christmas Carol is my absolute favorite Christmas tale in general and this is my second favorite version ever, so I really enjoyed watching it through your eyes.
I also want to say, I love your enthusiasm for movies and the whole experience, along with your positivity. You're open to the movies in a way that makes it so fun to watch. A lot of people like to focus on the negatives without considering the positives and/or they dislike things because they think it's cool. If you're interested in a slightly more serious version of A Christmas Carol, while still having whimsy and being a musical, I wholeheartedly recommend A Christmas Carol the Musical with Kelsey Grammar. Plus it goes a bit more into Scrooge's history for why he is as he is. It's my favorite adaptation.

This is my favorite Muppets movie by far alongside Muppet Treasure Island! If you haven’t seen that one yet I think you’d enjoy it! Michael Caine took this role because he wanted his granddaughter to be able see a movie he was in that wasn't too violent! Up until this he was known for action/war and gangster roles! He also chose to play Scrooge completely straight despite the silliness around him and continues to see this film as one of his favorite roles of his entire career!🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
It makes sense to have Statler and Waldorf as the ghosts of Marley and Marley, seeing as they’re such misers in the show; but I would have thought one of them would have been playing the role of Scrooge, rather than having a live actor.

You are me. I sob through the second half of the movie as an adult and I loved all the songs growing up. Like other people have mentioned, I hope you listen to "When Love is Gone" as it's a great song in its own right and adds to the story.

I was initially not a fan of the big, bulky text, but then I remembered the font used in your YT banner and it matches pretty well; it basically creates your own really unique aesthetic. I actually watched this film for the first time a few months ago and I think this was an interesting entry of the franchise. I personally enjoy the Treasure Island more than this one. It surprised me that Michael Caine was in this. In my eyes, he’ll always be Alfred from the Dark Knight trilogy. Merry Christmas Nick.

My favorite Muppet movie!!! I used to watch this movie all the time (I had the VHS, so it even had the cut out song When Love was Gone)!
Nick, if you can, give Scrooge (2022 Netflix movie) a watch. Not many people know about it and I thought it was really good.
