It’s the anarchic sense of fun they had that resonates with me. The fourth wall breaks and that sort of thing. 😊 I always wondered if Henson and Co. got any pushback for that stuff from genius TV and movie execs, on the show as well as the movies. That kind of creativity tends to frighten those in charge of stuff.

Five of the Muppeteers had cameos too, that I could see. Jim Henson of course, you saw in the dinner club scene. Richard Hunt was the briefly seen Taxi driver in the opening, and Kathy Mullen was his backseat passenger. Frank Oz is briefly seen when Gonzo screams "STOP THE PRESSES!", and Jerry Nelson was the father walking past Kermit who said "Bears wear hats." That was his daughter Christine who was with him, who sadly suffered from cystic fibrosis. She passed away a year after this, but Jim Henson made sure she had a speaking part in the movie so that she could get a SAG card (she had wanted to be an actress).

The bike sequence had its origins in the first movie where Kermit is seen riding a bike along a country road, apparently unsupported or assisted in any way. As I recall, Kermit on the bike was the first WOW moment in “The Muppet Movie” and the audience I saw it with when I was wee was utterly captivated by it. Audience members were audibly asking each other, “How dey do dat??” The funny part is that in an interview conducted after “The Muppet Movie” had been out for a couple weeks Jim Henson said he was getting really annoyed by people asking about Kermit on the bike since it was actually one of the easiest tricks to pull off. There were FAR more technically difficult shots in that movie but all anyone wanted to talk about was Kermit on the damn’ bike. So for “Caper” he had everybody on bikes, figuring that’s what people wanted - and as Matthew said, that wasn’t the most challenging trick in this movie either. 🤣

One of the most heart breaking stories of this movie is the brief shot of the daughter and her dad doing the "Look Dad a bear!" joke was Christine Nelson and her father Jerry Nelson who was a puppeteer on many Muppet and Sesame Street sets. Christine was already in poor health and could barely walk through the scene but they made her dream of being an actress come true. Christine sadly died shortly thereafter in 1982 but it just goes to show the sense of family and camaraderie the Muppet family had.

My mom taped this off the tv in the late 80s, but missed the first minutes, so we never knew the title. It was always Happiness Hotel at our house and we loved it. Still say to myself, "Somebody's checkin' in!", when I go to a hotel. Of course, "what color are their hands now" and "I brought the paper towels" are classics.

The man that Gonzo was taking a photo of at the resturant is Jim Henson, making a cameo. He's the guy who started The Muppets, made The Muppet Show, the Muppets for Sesame Street, Sam & Friends (which was the first show he made though it was only in the Washington DC area), Fraggle Rock, the three first Muppet movies (even directing this one), The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth (both he directed), The Storyteller, The Jim Henson Hour, Muppet Babies and Muppet'Vision 3D at Disney Hollywood Studios (the last project he worked on before he passed away in 1990 from Streptococcus pyogenes, and was released the following year). He also puppeteered Kermit the Frog, Dr. Teeth, Rowlf, The Swedish Chef, Link Hogthrob, Waldorf, The Newsman, Ernie, Guy Smiley and many more in The Muppets projects, Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock.

    - This is my favorite Muppet movie, and I think it's a great template for an anthology show of them doing parodies of genres & movies, not unlike what they did in the imagination segments of Muppet Babies. I think the writing in this one, with the mix of the 4th wall breaking, is just the best comedy of the franchise ... - I first saw this as a child, so I misheard Ms. Piggy's line to Charles Grodin as "Your singing was DUMB!" instead of "dubbed!" I didn't know what the latter meant until I grew up, but both reading are funny AND make sense to me 😄 ... - Watching it now though, I kinda wish Gonzo or Fozzy had a subplot. I don't know where it would go, but it just feels like they're just extensions of Kermit. It's not a bad thing, just something I'm curious to see.

This movie is SO good! Wonderful reaction! Charles Grodin is fantastic in this (and please please one of these days, react to his classic buddy comedy MIDNIGHT RUN). He plays it so straight the entire time and it's fantastic. Grodin also wrote a very very funny "expose" on his affair ("My Night with Miss Piggy" after this movie -- I think it was in People or Vanity Fair, but it was incredibly funny). He was such a rare talent. And that WAS Jim Henson early on!

If you can order the dvd (or rent it from your library) PLEASE react to The Muppet FAMILY Christmas (there's another one closely titled to it but look for the 'Family'). It is pure GOLD, for many reasons. I also request Evil Under the Sun; it stars "Lady Holiday" and the truck driver plays Poirot. If you want to see some great Peter Falk films then check out "The In-Laws" in which he stars with Alan Arkin, and "The Cheap Detective" which is a spoof of Humphrey Bogart films with a cast to die for.

my favorite one is Take Manhattan. Next is Family Christmas you should also react to movie special effects documentaries.

I think it's hilarious that Charles Grodin is the rival of Kermit the Frog here. You just have to change one letter in Grodin and it will translate to the frog in swedish. 😀

I prefer the one that came out in 1979 better than all of them !! The one from 1979 is the reason that there's so much Muppets in Family Guy . 👍 🐸

Please consider watching The Dark Crystal. It's been a favorite of mine since I was five. Some of Jim Henson's best and most creative work.
