    Krispy Kreme ITSELF wasn't associated with any of this... the owners (JAB) who purchased the company in 2016 are the focus of the video. If the title said "How Peets Coffee Owners Exposed Their Own Dark Past," it doesn't take away the fact Peets was founded in Berkeley, CA and not associated with Nazis.

    I don't think thy should feel responsible. They are independent persons who have no control over the past. Now, if they want to try to make a positive impact in the world more power to them, but I don't think it should be done out of an obligation to `restore honor to their family name`.
    People are people and, while genetics and family life have a big impact on how someone turns out, they can be significantly different than their family. For better or for worse.

    • @Christopher-td8wu
      @Christopher-td8wu 5 лет назад +6

      Will Huizenga I don't think it is mostly "restore honor to their family name". The four Reimann children own around $3.8 billion in JAB shares. They now know a portion of this wealth was due to slave/forced labor. They did not have to go public with this information. Considering all four were adopted, I think it is more moral/publicity thing than family honor thing.

      I _highly_ doubt that. German billionaires are generally _extremely_ private, to the point that there are Germans with a net worth of over 10 billion that don't even have pictures on Wikipedia. There is not a culture of high-profile mega-wealthy in Germany in the same way as the US, if it were a publicity stunt they wouldn't have used their own family. A more likely cynical explanation is that it is easier to do damage control when you dig up your own past and release that information yourself, as opposed to somebody else doing it (although, really, I doubt this information would've been front-page news anyway.)

    This story relates very much to the questions being asked in the US today about reparations for slavery. And the complications are very similar, but even farther removed. There is no one alive today who either was a slave or owned slaves. Where does it end? As someone from a Christian heritage, can I collect reparations against those of Italian heritage for the persecution of the Christians by the Romans? As someone with American Indian blood, don't all those of white, European background owe me a fortune?
    For the record, I have nothing against reparations in theory. But as a white person who neither owned slaves nor would have owned slaves, you need to find a way for those reparations to come from somewhere other than my tax dollars. African Americans may be owed, but they are not owed by me, thus zero of that payback should come from me. Unless you want to take it from my share of the Christian and Indian persecution money that I have coming to me.

      The effects of slavery are still being felt. Many of our current American corporations became wealthy off the backs of African slaves. 500 years an entire race was treated like any other farm animal. They were denied basic human freedoms and were bred like dogs. Effects lasted far after slavery ended, racism, segregation, KKK, prison industrial complex. People became billionaires off of the work slaves did. Now descendants of slaves get to watch the slave owners relatives continue to be wealthy while we struggle and get called names for not letting it go.

    Hello Team Defranco
    @philpdefanco
    In the off chance someone does read this, this is about an on going murder trail here in my hometown of South Carolina Bluffton/Hampton county area.
    Backstory of family
    The person charged with the murder is part of the Murdaugh family. They are the biggest lawyer family around, they also have heavy ties to the solicitors office. With 3 Generations working for the office.
    Case
    The 20 year old Paul Murdaugh who was intoxicated at the time, is being charged for murder. This is his second time being charged for murder, the first was vehicular manslaughter with alcohol being a factor. He walked away nearly untouched even though he was under 21 and drinking. Fast forward a few years and now he killed another 19 year old girl on a boat. He already seems to be getting away with the police who claim "failing to do comprehensive test to see if he was drinking", and also refusing to release any other public information. We have an extremely unfair system here of old extremely rich family's controlling nearly everything. They are trying to cover this up and hide it from local media no local news has done any actually video segment about this. I understand this isn't problem that effects the mass population, but with a mass group of people this corruption can be exposed and ended.

    I do not think it matters whether they are attempting to atone for their family's actions or get ahead of a potential story. Historical accuracy is paramount given the presence of Holocaust Deniers. Having large companies/families reveal internal documents which show the brutality of the Nazi Regime helps to further provide evidence of the atrocities in the 1930s/1940s.
    I do not hold the family responsible for what their ancestors, who died decades ago, did during WW2. This stands for the saying that a son is not responsible for the sins of his father. However, I do believe, as a corporation, they have a responsibility to admit their fault and act accordingly via restitution/charitable work, etc. What that amounts to is not something I can attest. However, I do not think the family members, individually or together, have a responsibility to act. They did not engage in the behavior, and it seems, knew little of their family's DIRECT involvement. The only obligation the family, as private individuals, is to reveal the information regarding the company's participation in the Nazi Regime and guide the company toward recognition and atonement for the role it played decades ago.

      I fully agree. Its not their business to atone for the sins of their ancestors. It wont bring back the people that were killed or died as result of their ancestors actions or comfort those who lost family members to the nazi regime but I cannot fault them for looking into their families dark past, owning it then turning it around and wanting to do something positive. the millions donated could save a lot of lives or help a lot of people in need.
      Im sure there are folks in high places with more money than KK but they keep their billions gathering dust in offshore bank accounts and other tax avoidance schemes.
      They didnt need to but they did and that is pretty commendable in this day and age when there is such a huge gap between the rich and less well off/poorer people.
      I really hope the good will of the companies that donated money genuinely goes to good use and the people that need it rather than line the pockets of CEOs and other top level directors or celebrities that may decide to get in on it for good PR.
      Remember the story about Bono from U2?? He does a lot of charity stuff but its also been discovered and made public that he takes 98% of all the money that is donated.

      @nfzeta128 5 лет назад +3

      This is more about the gesture and the social effects than specifically about forgiveness. This all shows a monetary (most important thing to companies) willingness to do better.
      Also we all are a part of the past that makes us up, in the case of companies even if the management changes the 'company' still is very much a part of and benefiting from that past.

    • @nfzeta128
      @nfzeta128 5 лет назад

      @F First, there is the simple thing of the benefit being carried forward, don't think I should need to be talking about that. Once a benefit is had, unless all involved in it suddenly disappear or they are benefiting from it. In cases of companies its much more so, to the point that you can usually trace it becoming relevant to things like that. Because lets face it, slavery or slave labour is great for business.
      See that middle part there, that is your problem, you're looking at things based on whether there is even the slightest chance it could affect you and automatically disagreeing with it based on that.
      You also are looking at reparations wrong, they are mainly a peace offering when excess benefit is had on the work of others.
      Its the same reason why in the EU there are laws where the original author or creator of a work can get extra compensation if a business makes an excess of profit from the license of the original creators work.
      "Nobody should have to pay for the sins of their ancestors."
      In an ideal world that is true, the problem is such a world doesn't exist. When wrongs are committed humans can't always let them go, especially depending on the gravity. Stuff like this are just a show of good faith to prevent a grudge from festering. When you look at terrorist for example, they're mainly people fighting on such wrongs, old or not.

      you know we could end slavery, its a choice that if people were to get together and do, could be destroyed. Its not like there is some magic keeping us from stopping it, its more the lack of willingness to interfere with daily life then anything else holding people back from fully eradicating it. The down part is that we probably won't. I just hate to think about how many slaves are out there that may be within literal miles of any of us and we don't even realize it. Its something that gets to me and I know I do it along with most others, we ignore signs of distress as it scares us and we would rather assume we are wrong about it then directly confront it. Like when I see a car on the side of the road, I drive past. They could just have pulled over to grab something, or they could be in need of actual help, it is something that always bothers me when I do it, like if they are not in trouble, all I would have done is embarrass myself and nothing worse, yet I always keep driving to worried about all the what ifs to actual stop.

    Ex: iPhones and Macintosh are results of questionable work ethics of Apple running their employees into the ground. Road work using chain gangs for prisoners that may have been innocent all along.
    Fast food employee abuse by managers and customers. US slave labor used to build infrastructure.
    Number of medical benefits from horrible human experiments through history.

Don't make the past look purely black with the, its always been bad, so get over it. Using claims like its always been that way are excuses to allow continued mistreatment.
