idk how rarely people check instagram / how many people they follow, but i scroll until i see the 'all caught up' message which only takes about 2 minutes

I can understand it to be honest. If it was a traditional trending page it would just be the same big channels appearing every day. Even the media/talkshow videos crush and get multimillions of views so they would most likely end up on the trending page regardless. Also a trending page is like the face of youtube to new users. Of course it needs to be clean and most importantly diverse content. If a new user opened youtube and only saw garbage vlogging channels that get 5+ million views a video they would leave.
@@LawlessPlay i disagree while mainstream media and tv talkshow may get a considerable amount of views most of the time it is not even the most viewed video on the site ,it's not even elligible to be so called "hot"according to youtube because most of the time the view generation of a certain video doesn't even compare to the view of the videos of the so called "bad actor" ex:when a new video by jontron is published i think its about flex tape 2 it generate about 3 million views in about 2 days which didn't included in trending compared a video by jaiden animation which gets into trending despite only getting abou 2 million views in 3 days just because she is one of the favoured creator by youtube.and about the argument of filtering certain video to present into new user i think it's important to not set unrealistic expectation to them even if the hottest video on the site is a shitty vlog they need to know about that ,so they will know what they're getting into instead of filtering certain content to please them,they need to know dicodomy of youtube
It's that or youtube runs the risk of something unsavoury ending up the tab. Given the whole monitization scandal, I can't blame youtube for curating it.
@@LawlessPlay I say an easy eay to go around it is treating videos as "Trending" if the usual view count of their channel becomes significantly higher.
The comment ban is channel wide and not just on videos containing minors. For example one of our videos featuring a Holocaust survivor who lived her entire life with PTSD has no comments. They need better tech if these measures are permanent.

Hi Phillip, please talk about the shooting at UNCC. Riley Howell was one of the two students killed, and he tackled the shooter to the ground allowing the police to capture the shooter. Riley went to high school with me, he was in a few of my classes. He was a kind, selfless guy. He had such a positive attitude and it spread to anyone he was around. He was the friendly, outdoorsy athlete that everyone loved. It didn't surprise any of my old classmates that he sacrificed himself to make sure no one else got hurt. He was truly a hero, and I wish everyone, not just those that knew him, could know that.

@Alvinsland2 yeah, kids aren't that dumb when it comes down to a choice between censored version of RUclips (even if they don't know it's censored) and "classic" RUclips. They always pick option number 2. And honestly, I think tech companies should come up with a better idea on how to police children instead of parental control. I, for example, as I'm sure many other kids did this, when I was thinking of creating parental account, I'd just make up a name of my supposed relative and then tie it to my child account. It's like tech companies think that people are going to behave themselves just because. That's not how the internet works. The only way I see we can prevent children from watching "adult/unfiltered" content is by forcing new users to register their accounts using ID. Totalitarian - yes, but that's the only option atm. Unless they're going to come up with some super smart algorithm that can analyze your age just by looking what kind of content you're watching, although it sounds dumb even as I'm writing this rn, since if a supposed kid is watching some 18+ content, that algorithm will assume that he/she is no kid at all.
I'm sorry, but it's up to the PARENTS to monitor their child....not RUclips. If you can't be an actual parent and pay attention...well...how about not letting them watch RUclips at all? I let my kids watch but I am with them and watching too. Censorship sucks....

I have never been to jail. I have never been in a physical fight. I have never cheated on a girlfriend. I jave never been addicted to drugs and alcohol. If people are guided well while growing up you can learn the difference between entertainment and real life. If you can't do that then you shouldn't even have children. Why can't RUclips implement a "percentage of video" based monetization method? So that the copystriking party needs to select the "time spots AND lengths" of the ACTUAL copyrighted material then they only get that "percentage" of the monetization which the video earns...
So people can upload copyrighted content with 10 hours of a black screen after, so they still get most money

@Renata M I don't think the likes should go away but the internet can easily be worse than real life. It's filled with people who can hide behind anonymity. When I was younger and had an insta I used to get creepy dms all the time and it made me pretty uncomfortable around men in general for a time and while I'm more tolerant now that wariness is still there. Leaving the internet is also pretty implausible and people who say that must be older because phones are basically necessities at this point. Deleting the app can also be pretty hard for some people considering it's how some people communicate with their family and where they keep all their photos since they take up space. For the people that do IG as a *job* they'd be affected pretty bad too since without likes they wouldn't be able to tell what direction they should take their IG and it is a real job just as much as youtubers and actors have real jobs.

The word "trending" is misleading. It could be called "spotlight" instead.

It's probably purposefully misleading so that more people click on it. Nobody's gonna click on spotlight because they don't wanna know what RUclips themselves are highlighting but they will click on trending because people want to be in on trends and are compelled to find out what's popular.
I'm not big on social media, twitter and insta have never had much pull for me, but I have 3 young children and I'm happy to see these changes from instagram and I hope other social media platforms follow suit. As a parent I've worried about how chasing likes and a new online culture I didn't have as a child will effect them.

You are right, but how many would acknowledge/evaluate that the content there is messing with their mental health - also all attention whores(male and female alike) would not remove it then, though they most likely need such update. I would assume instagram can make it if there is not a real human in photo(which i believe they can) to leave the likes in. Seems as a descent middle ground.

Okay. So. A few extra details about what happened, especially in the few video clips you showed. I did hear there was rioting further up and along the march, but most of what happened in the Montparnasse area happened before the protest started. It was set to start of from there, at 3:30pm. At 10am people were already there and more and more started gathering. The authorities' presence was HUGE. It's usually strong on Saturdays (yellow vest days) because we're on the way to the Champs Élysées and there is a hospital nearby, so they REALLY want some routes to stay clear at all times.
The mayhem in our street happened from noon to 3pm. Too many people had gathered to fit in the huge intersection between the boulevard and they must have been provocking or pushing at something, but basically the police started to try to push part of the crowd in our boulevard, as if to kind of shape it into a march rather than a human tide.
They did that by charging and loosing tear gas... Ergo, everybody runs away, people are pissed. They go down our street. All the restaurants lock their customers in. (weird how we didn't put tables outside today...)
The problem was... down a couple of blocks is the hospital which was guarded by the gendarmerie (similar to police but dependant of the military). And they DID NOT want the protest's "waiting line" to go all the way up to the hospital. So.... They pushed back the other way! With trucks advancing and tear gas and the same.
So there were a bunch of protesters stuck on a boulevard for a length of about a couple of blocks with nowhere to go.
One, it was terrifying to witness. It must have felt worse to realise you were in the middle of that.
Two, it effectively set off the angry people that had come there to rage out. I mean, get someone who's convinced the government is out to get them and stick them between the police and the army closing in...
So. Yeah. Very specific, very localised commentary on the few seconds of video you showed. Hope this gets seen by the team, I imagine you'll find that interesting.
Wow that does sound scary. I’m glad you were okay. It really does sound poorly handled; what were people supposed to do when they were stuck? Of course they’ll get freaked out and upset. And no matter how much you try to coordinate with other teams, crowds are impossible to control and unpredictable. Copyright strikers should have to:
1) produce the content being claimed, ie upload the song, etc
If the song has been altered in some way, allow a mini-survey for the copyright holder to describe these alterations.
2) show the exclusive rights they have to that content, and the specific reasons the copyright holder believes fair use does not apply.
3) select only the specific part of the video containing the copyrighted content so RUclips can compare the original to the content being claimed. This would be using RUclips's, already in place, Content ID system.
4) if the content section of the video is matched to the original, then the length of it can be compared the the video as a whole to produce a percentage of profit to be given to the copyright holder. That percentage is not controlled by the copyright holder, but they could instead opt to have that part censored by the content creator which both parties would have to agree to.
5) if an agreement can't be reached through this automatic system, either because the content creator disagrees with the strike, the copyright holder disagrees with the percentage, or the content creator does not want to censor their video, then a third (human) party from RUclips would be requested to mediate.
RUclips should be able to do these things fairly easily, though it would take time.

I'm a very socially anxious person, and haven't posted on Instagram in over a year, solely because I don't think people would care enough i.e I won't get enough likes. I don't think removing the like system is the best approach, but rather making it private. Let the user know how many likes they're getting for analytical purposes, mainly for business accounts, but let those numbers not be available to the public. I know it'll do me a lot of good knowing that people can't judge me based on my like of follower count, and I'd be able to post a lot more freely.

Y I K E S. No thanks. People who glorify Reddit forget it's spawned some of the most hateful people and sentiments, on all sides. It seems designed to push the black & white take to the top. Reddit has plenty of irrelevant comments that get pushed up due to mob mentality, which is a problem for Reddit. Literally nobody follows the reddiquette and has idiotic reasons as to why they downvote something, for most it's an "I disagree" button. If you want to prove someone wrong, you don't need to rely on a button to silence them for you. Actually prove them wrong. IIRC RUclips "broke" the thumbs down button due to thumbs down having a bad psychological effect on people, which is similar to the likes stuff but the opposite way. Like imagine if you could vote "I dont like this" on a picture on Insta and people mass "I don't like this" voted pictures of a bullied kid at school, yeah, really not a good idea IMO.
I think a better solution would be a forum esque comment section if you enable it, have a moderator start a "discussion" thread and make it easier to moderate.

As some one who use to manage a meme instagram account with high end of 5 digits of followers. I can say all meme posts have certain criteria that consistently get more liked / viewed.
I think a very weird quality of RUclips trending page is the news portion. It's often half filled with sports content. But the regular trending page (if you don't click on the news) is also half filled with sports content.
Why not just make a sports tab? You have a tab for gaming. And HOW does sports content qualify for trending "news"? It's just odd, especially considering that there is admitted and obvious curation of the content that goes into all of the trending genres.

@@@alejandromavarez164 The problem with likes/followers/subscribers/shares/comments/retweets/etc. is that they affect humans as drugs do, you get a feeling of gratification through certain hormones (I believe it actually is the same hormone), and a hard withdrawal could potentially cause some effects similar to drug withdrawal, although, that has to be seen. What is more, for platforms like IG, Twitter, etc. it is vital to have a massive amount of creators, however, if advertisers lose the interest to pour money to said creators due to a lack of knowledge about the creator's influence, the platform might lose the creators to another one. The platform's representatives might say stuff like they are saying just to give the public the feeling, they care for them and their health, but at the end of the day, (ad)money will always have a higher priority than the creators/consumers and their health. It is the same on RUclips, if someone copy strikes your video, they get 100% of the revenue, for seconds of actual/indirect footage; if that is how caring for the creators looks like, I don't want to see negligence.

I agree with the fear that nothing can be done with the corruption, but I also think that after 3 years I wish congress would stop the infighting and actually do there job of working on policy change. Im tired of the fact that it seems that all they do is fight over Trump. I do a lot of state legislative research though, and I will say it seems like states are making ALOT of laws and policy changes, I havent seen much on corruption, but almost every state is working on legalizing marijuana whether medical or for hemp or what have it. So i realize that doesnt help, but they States are taking action. So i think that we should focus our attention on them because the federal government is hardcore failing right now.
Corruption in leadership/govt has been going on since the Roman days (prob long before but that's as far back as I've studied), it's really nothing new. Those in power don't want change, those not in power do want change BUT as soon as those not in power get that power they no longer want change, they want to keep the power. Until we can come up with a system that allows NO POWER we'll always have corruption. How can a leader/govt do their job w/no power? I have no clue. Vicious circle.

On the whole Instragram likes thing, I think it's pointless. It's one of those things everyone will be in favor of, because it's good to care about the mental health of others. But once the likes are gone, once the rush of happiness you get from the quick validation is gone, people will just jump ship to another platform that does have those likes. The problem is people, the system just takes advantage of that. If you remove it from one system, another will take advantage of that opening you just created.

Human beings are awful in so many ways, but an app is not natural, it can be redesigned to not appeal the worst parts of us. Children or teens trying to figure out the world shouldnt have the pressure to get their self love from that, and then tell them is their fault when these apps target your most basic psychology.
IDK, i think a lot of social media has hit critical mass, so its hard for people to jump ship. There have been alternatives to FB, YT, Twitter and after a lot of initial press they go nowhere.

Love this move from Instagram. I think that the culture is having really profound effects that should be examined as soon as possible.
For the record, I'm not very old (on the older end of gen z), but I've noticed that my younger siblings and their friends are being tremendously affected by the beauty/monetary/happiness standards that are shoved in their faces 24/7. I'm affected by it too, though probably to a lesser degree. Either way, very glad to see the problem addressed, because I think we need to be taking as many measures as we can to improve the state of mental health in this generation.
I hope hiding likes can be an optional thing. I like being able to show which kind of content my followers enjoy more of. That way we can both easily provide for each other.
