I just want to tell you how wonderful it is the way you cover tragedies. Riley is a hero. You have done his family and our nation a wonderful service by covering his story.
Remember when Japan tried to ban men 6'5 or taller from Olympic Basketball because it put their team at a giant disadvantage. Genetics is a giant part of success in sports.
@@Ribcageler Oh you right now that I think about it, because in reality even if a MtF transgender was to lower their testosterome to that of the average female, there muscle tissues will still be larger, or have the ability to be larger, than the average women. This subject is way to confusing for a youtube comment section.
Sports in general is not fair. Being tall or naturally athletic is something nobody can control but can provide an advantage from the start. More testosterone isn’t any different the way I see it.
Hmmm, you've got a point there. In the same manner you could ban (too) tall athletes (male or female) from competing in basketball, volleyball, pole-vaulting etc... The difference is that in that respect height was never an issue, while the concentration of certains chemicals, natural or otherwise, HAS been an issue for decades and subject to regulation. In other words, anabolic steroid substances have always been considered as performance enhancers. Therefore naturally high testosterone (the native anabolic steroid for humans) levels could be regarded as unfair as well. 2 sides to look at the issue. I lean towards the latter though, abnormally high levels of testosterone due to transgenderism, drug use or naturally occurring secretion SHOULD be banned (if statistically and significantly too high). Otherwise, just open the doors and let them get juiced up as much as they want.
@@shank2088 You are already operating under the logic that "sports are just not fair". The only reason theres a different category for women in the first place is so that they dont have to compete with men.
I don't really understand the ruling on the "high level of testosterone". In my opinion that just boils down to luck. Are you going to force someone to be shorter if they are tall because that's an advantage of most sports.
The thing is that you can simply ingest testosterone, wich isn't possible with body height. By allowing high levels every athlete would be forced to ingest that amount of testosterone to be able to keep up.
@@Nusma Some people are naturally stronger and gain muscle easier. We ban steroids, we don't force people to weaken themselves, or tell everyone who is weaker to take steroids to level the playing field. Might I remind you that testosterone varies in men as well... Should men with naturally higher testosterone take suppressants, or men with lower testosterone be able to take testosterone supplements?
@@Nusma And you could simply just wear stilts to be taller, what are these ridiculous arguments!? Her testosterone is NATURALLY OCCURRING. She's not illegally ingesting it, therefore, she's doing NOTHING WRONG.
I am a student at TC Roberson High School. Riley Howell went here and while I didn't know him personally, many people did. It's been hard seeing people cry in the hallways. Incredible sad and I'm so proud of him for what he did. Wishing his family and the people affected the best. Also, thanks for not showing the shooter. I love that policy.
Sports are about fair game, tell me how are you going to know when they use these hormones. All sports are about discrimination, because you can't have heavy weight vs light weight, it's unfair, even when weight terms to different values depending on the person. There are maximum weights and heights in some sports, for fair game's sake
@@TheCatvolador Sure, but when it is about competition at its highest level, sports are inherently unfair because of biology and that's okay. At these high levels, it is as much about biology as it is hard work and people shouldn't be pulled down for being naturally better.
TheCatvolador Fair to me would be that there are no handicaps or advantages. If someone is stronger and that gives them an advantage, then they are naturally stronger.
Riley you will forever be a hero. It is because of you that everyone else including myself got to go home that Tuesday evening. Rest in peace Ellis Rest in peace Riley #Charlottestrong
I've noticed more and more news outlets refusing to name or show pictures of mass murderers. I'm not sure if you started the practice, but I like that it is catching on.
Y’all I actually cried... I really can’t believe people are out here shooting people who just want get there education! Whyyyyyy? Why lord? RIP RILEY AND THANK YOU FOR BEING SOO SELFLESS! Condolences to his family, and those who witnessed this horrific tragedy. I’m scared to even walk to my car at night wtf is wrong with us. Get it together!
Could have probably been because while their son/sibling tragically passed, they knew he went out as the person he truly was, hence why they weren't surprised to hear the reason for his death. Truly a selfless and righteous hero that young man was.
There was a shooting at UNC Charlotte. It was on LDOC (last day of classes) and 2 people died and 4 injured I believe. They've been in lockdown for awhile. I don't know too many specifics. I go to school nearby and only found out because of my parents calling me in concern.
I live in Canada, and I watch your show on the daily. But this is the first time I’ve only received news of another shooting solely from you. I don’t have a face or a name to put to the killer from other outlets and honestly it was so refreshing. But I got to learn who Riley was and that is who I will remember and thank. The lines must be drawn. They decided that they want to be an editor and not a platform. So they should be held liable for all that is posted on their platforms just like a newspaper is responsible for the content of their news.
Osiano Isekenegbe I don’t remember telephone companies picking and choosing their clients based on opinion. And they are quite clear that they don’t actually enforce TOS, they just ban based on opinion. They don’t point what was done that led to the ban or sometimes they update TOS and apply it retroactively or point to things done outside the platform.
I agree. Instagrams bans and takes down content ALLLL the time made by the indigenous activitists and birth workers i follow. All they are doing is spreading healing and ancestral knowledge. The rightwing racists deserve to be banned for spreading fake news, ESPECIALLY if their gonna ban us for encouraging breastfeeding and land redistribution

Ive seen post taken down for talking crap about white supremacists, patriarchy, neoliberal policy.... if they are gonna ban us saying things that are being spread in higher ed classrooms then I fucking hope they are atleast banning people spreading pure bullshit like alex jones. My brother was across the hall from where the shootings happened. I could never imagine losing him, but having him be so close... My hearts really go out to the Howell's. This was an avoidable tragedy, one that keeps happening while we sit and shrug as though still surprised at the outcomes. RIP Riley, and thank you for helping to protect not just my little brother, but the rest of the student body. May your actions not be left in vain.
I mean when a woman has the testosterone levels of a guy... should totally take drugs to be a woman and not a dude, thats what she wants right? Not be a dude... a dude competing against women...
@@keres666 although I'm against transpeople in sports. She is biologically a female she should compete with other females even though her testosterone is really high
@@MidnightFlight378 nah you're right I misunderstood that... then yeah is she is a biological female, so yeah its fine... theres this trans woman in MMA whos basically just there to punch women in the face... so its kind of a more usual thing in 2019
There should be no division by gender. Just have everybody on same category or, when is the case, divided by objective terms such as weight. If woman can’t compete with man, too bad.
It's not about disparity, Semenya is not "just a woman with high testosterone", she's intersex, a genetic disorder which in her case means she has internal testes.
Riley was a really good friend... we went to school together for years before his family moved for his mom's job. I'm so thankful that as he is being laid to rest today, he will be buried with full military honors. 💞🌻 I'm gonna miss you, Ri....
I can’t say what Riley would like us to do, how he would like us to react or anything, really. I didn’t know him. All I’ll say is thank you, Riley. You saved countless lives, and did so without a second thought. Thank you.
"Riley has been their hero for a long time and now they share him with so many others." Legitimately crying right now. I'm so sad that this brilliant young man was taken from this world. Rest in power, Riley.
Seriously, this was the first time I've felt tears well up on a shooting story in a long while. Thank you for always covering things the way you do. Much respect, much love. Thank you PD
Seems really odd that an entirely natural hormone difference would be bannable. I mean, surely ALL athletes at the high levels have a natural affinity for athleticism in addition to all the training? That might be large feet for a swimmer or it might be higher than normal testosterone levels. I'm against trans-women competing in female events, because men will be stronger, but if they're a naturally born woman, what else should matter?
Caridor yes and no. The problem with this particular case is that the athlete is not 100% biologically female. We can’t let men compete in women’s sport, even though they technically also have completely biologically normal hormones....for males. Now if we allow (biological) females and not (biological) males, what happens to someone who is (biologically) somewhere in between? That is not an easy answer, but I certainly see why women who do not have any intersex traits think themselves at a disadvantage....
Pezfeo her birth certificate says female. They’ve done tests proving she’s biologically female. She just happens to naturally have higher testosterone levels.
I think the idea of gender separation in sports is stupid anyway. Separate it into classes based on demonstrable skill set the same way weight classes exist in wrestling. If a woman can kick my ass, she should be able to compete with me in sport, and even if she can't kick my ass, she should still be allowed to try unless we're grossly outmatched. But being grossly outmatched goes both ways. I wouldn't be able to go toe to toe with Rhonda Rousey
EXACTLY!! fuck the IAAF! She has every right to participate without artificially changing herself!! should 7'7" bball plays be expected to undergo bone shortening surgery to even the playing field? not fucking likely!! This is disgusting discrimination against a naturally enhanced phenomenal athlete.
My sister goes to uncc. My friends go to uncc. I almost whent there too. My brother almost whent there. I hear all these news stories about school shootings and it hurts my heart, but it's just a story on the tv. Never take what you have for granted, it might not be there tomorrow. Tell your family you love them.
as a women with PCOS, it causes me to have higher testosterone levels... it is insulting that because i naturally have those levels, that i am not considered a natural woman. 10% of females have PCOS. Women like me are not only targeted and insulted by this but also by men who mis-read us because they are into transvestigation. Last month i had to go to jury duty. i was wearing a dress, had long hair and a guy looked me up and down and then called me SIR... on purpose... I'm not trans-gender, i'm not a transvestite. I was born a female, and i present as a female... i do feel hurt that my femininity is in quest by homophobes and homophobic organizations. It hurts to be natural and perceived to not be the gender i was born as. it's even more insulting that it would mean i'm not women enough to compete, it is sending signals to the world that i am unworthy of my birthright as a women. The way i see sports is that there ARE dominated by some people who are more gifted then others naturally at something, which is how it should be. I don't expect in all sports to hold the best of the best back by making them against their will take body altering substances just because they have a small advantage naturally. This is a slippery slope subject no organization should have a right to force a natural person to take unnatural means just to compete. this is disgusting.

if IAAF would require women with naturally high testosterone to take suppressors.... couldn't that just be used as an argument as to men with unnaturally low testosterone take testosterone boosters...? Or am I overthinking or something? To clarify, I'd be against the above (Edit: to clarify further: unnaturally low testosterone men taking boosters) ... I find it cheating, (unnaturally low testosterone men taking boosters) but if they are arguing for suppressors for unnaturally high testosterone, couldn't the same argument be in reverse: boosters for men with unnaturally low testosterone....?
Nah this shit is stupid. How do these people get sports so wrong? It is so easy, all females compete agaisnt eachother and all males compete against eachother. The best will rise. Done
Yea, then there is the slippery slope. Should men with very high testosterone take suppressors and those with low levels take boosters? Are we celebrating the natural human body at its limits or are we striving for a very specific athletic performance level?

No such thing as hate speech. It's either free speech or not unless it incites violence then it's a call to hard or threat. Not sure why that's so hard to understand
Agreed. I don’t really like the people that were banned but I don’t support the ban. I think most reasonable people appreciate having free speech and understand it means allowing people you may not agree with have a voice. What makes it more interesting is, I’m willing to bet that if all of Phil’s viewers were to sit down and really analyze where they sit on the political spectrum today, it’s not where they used to be. Rather that, they are far more centrist than they thought. Silencing people is NOT how you get along.
Always enjoyed watching Alex Jones, I obviously don’t agree with a lot what he says but i still always enjoyed seeing his crazy interesting views from a different angle
You can despise Jones, Yiannopoulos, Farrakhan, Watson etc, you can HATE their ideas and fight tooth and nail against them. But you can still agree this coordinated ban is wrong. Unless these people directly and purposefully called for violence against an individual or group of people, or if they repeatedly violated a set of objective, fact based, unbiased terms of service ("hate" is not objective), which were clearly presented to them (and upon being banned, the exact message which violated the exact term & how was given,) then banning these people is wrong. Yes, these are private companies, so this is not illegal, but what we have seen recently, is that these massive trillion dollar tech conglomerates have become just as if not more powerful than entire governments. In this day and age, Social media are just about the only way for an average citizen to have an even remotely significant voice. These ultra-wealthy tech oligarchs coordinating a ban on certain individuals, for "violating" a subjective, ever changing, unclear double standard, is not "preventing hate". What we are witnessing is the erasure depersoning of whoever the multinational corporations dont like or fear.
Are we pretending companies have any morals now? The reason they're doing this is really sinister, it shows that these companies have political incentives aside from profit based incentives.
Oh but there is no such thing as biology now. See when science gets in the way of your emotions that you think are facts you just deny science. It's simple.
She is more akin to intersex, her genetics gave he an XY chromosome and unfortunately some internal testes that never developed properly. Doesn't matter too much that she has because of whatever complications of pregnancy she has come out much more women than not. She is someone with DSD (disorders of sexual development), which has about 7.5x the average testosterone levels as any normal women - and if you don't know that gives you a massive unfair, steroid level advantage, you are a fool. She has two options now - get the internal testes removed, or go on the hormone blockers for normal levels. This is opening a huge can of worms here... There is a reason we separated women from men in sports a long ass time ago. For exactly similar reasons. There is a reason some 200+ male marathon runners beat the best world record marathon runner for womens... And the distance of time between the records is substantial. And it is also true for short range sprints, weight lifting, quick-muscle reflex tests, and more. I am just talking best of the best here, this is very much a real issue, whether you want to accept it or not. And a large deal of it is in fact, hormonal. What hormones? Oh, you know - things like Testosterone... Which mostly comes from male testicles... Which some women, like with DSD, like above - this person in this debate from SA, seem to still have the benefit of at least partially in some form actually having. It is a fair ban to me; if it matters that much to her, get them removed and embrace her womanhood, or at least block those hormones to normal women levels.

Absolutely abhorrent that they would force female athletes born female to be required to take testosterone suppressants. It makes no sense, the aim of these sports is to find the strongest, fastest, and fittest human being in that event in order to show the peak of human capability. Would they force this on men? Of course not. Certain male athletes have enormous physical advantages over their competition and dominate their event, and we wouldn't dream of limiting them because we're literally watching to see them achieve the once thought unachievable. I can see this being arguable with relation to trans athletes but even that is a touchy subject.

Yes, but having an intersex person with testosterone levels closer to men defeats the point of having a women's division if the T-levels are an inherent advantage for that sport. It's the same reasoning as not letting transgender athletes compete in female sports, except that the person (Caster Semenya) is a naturally occurring gender aberration rather than a man-made one. And looking at pictures, it seems like Semenya looks and behaves like a man in every aspect of her life except for sports competitions, which makes the argument that she's being discriminated against even more laughable when it doesn't even seem like she considers herself a woman except when it's convenient. That's why she said the thing about being happy with the way she was born, implying she's okay with not being a woman, except when it comes to competitions where it gives her a huge advantage over typical women.
To my understanding, she is a woman. She has two X chromosomes; therefore, she should compete as a woman. Should Michael Phelps not have been allowed to swim, because he has the perfect swimmers body and other mutations such as producing less than half of the lactic acid of his rivals? People have natural advantages; that's largely the point of competitions - to put those natural advantages on display.
@@4WARD5, the competitions and world records are typically about normal humans pushing their training to the extreme, not about being a 1 in a million genetic anomaly that can only be beaten by a future genetic anomaly. That's why things like disorders that give you excess growth hormone or testosterone are against regulations - they're abnormal performance enhancers. I don't know the situation surrounding Michael Phelps so I can't say whether he falls into that category. But Semenya clearly does - her high testosterone has basically given her a male build and muscle tone that suppressors can't fix - she's permanently better than any normal female competitor in the same way that mtf trans athletes are.
@@4WARD5 She is a woman because she was assigned the female sex at birth. That is, the doctors decided she fit into the "female" category better than the "male" category. However, for many intersex babies, this decision is very arbitrary and has changed over the past few decades. For example, for infants with mixed gonadal tissue, the infant is assigned the sex that most closely matches the external genitalia. regardless of the sex chromosomes. You can read more here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_assignment By the way, Caster Semenya has XY chromosomes, not that this has any bearing on the conversation whatsoever. It says "female" on her birth certificate.
No, chromosomes are actually the most relevant thing, because it is an objective measurement of sex. To say that she can't compete as a woman is to say that her figure and being is not a valid way for a woman to be which is obviously objectively false, because she is the evidence. There are many, many natural physical advantages athletes can have and to say which are okay and which aren't is stupid; two men can have equal diets and workout regiments, but because of genetics, can have vastly different strength, stamina, etc. She's a woman. Period. She will get old and stop competing just like anyone else, and when that happens, then less capable women can return to winning as if winning is all it is even about.
Thank you for covering UNCC in a short & sweet way. I am so proud to say some radio outlets here in Charlotte have not said the shooter's name & instead focus on Riley, Ellis & those injured. #CharlotteStrong
"Many heroes all show the same quality when they're younger. They all remember their bodies moving before their minds could think." People like this young man are true heroes... I wish the his story ended differently ,but he truly was a hero...
fearlessreview no but having a naturally higher level of testosterone will give a female athlete a greater advantage. The proof of that is look at men. The main reason they are stronger and faster is because they have naturally higher levels of testosterone
Actually if you read reports Caster testosterone levels are around 500ng/ml which is 15-20x times higher than for average female and can be compared to half CC of test injection that is an insane advantage in terms of just hormone levels its even more insane knowing effects that testosterone have in long term on human body.
yakudza but they’re natural tho. It’s a disorder yes, but they’re not using performance enhancing drugs, they aren’t doing anything against the rules to get the advantage. It’s natural. Should we ban tall people from playing basketball because they’re naturally 7 feet tall?
Injections or not, you don't understand - it is testosterone, and the reason why you would benefit from teste injections which are banned, and this isn't too far dissimilar. It seems like you are the one here not understanding the situation this is talking about. The women with naturally high level that they are talking about are actually intersex individuals, also know as people with DSD (disorders of sexual development). Having read more about the specifics, the level of testosterone these individuals must be under to compete in the women's category is still 7.5 times higher than the level of testosterone in a standard healthy woman with no medical conditions. So for them to be able to compete as a woman they must go on hormone blockers just like a transgender individual until their T levels are below the cap. Sounds fair to me. If you want to talk about Semenya specifically, she has undergone testing, she has XY chromosomes and internal testes. Her options are surgically remove the testes which would lower her T levels significantly below the levels that even a normal woman has, or go on hormone blockers to get below the T cap.
@@arnold17 except caster literally has xy chromosome and I think undescended testes as well (don't quote me on this it's been long time since she was covered in my sexual repro classes). Sexual determination as of now still has a huuuuge grey area, and people like caster are said to be intersex because science literally could not pin down whether they be a woman or man. It's not about not allowing tall people play basketball because unfair to the short, it's about not allowing men to compete with women because of those basic differences from the genders giving advantage

Hi Phil!
Can we not jump into it for like an episode, just to see if the intro would be weird

This is not the same thing. This is to address mostly of people transitioning from males to females.
Querps omg who cares it’s just a sport
@@Ribcageler Did you pay attention, She isn't transitioning, so that comment is just void.
@@querps1043
I did pay attention. I was meaning some people will be caught up in the whole thing while they refine this. So right now it's not perfect
@@Ribcageler Oh you right now that I think about it, because in reality even if a MtF transgender was to lower their testosterome to that of the average female, there muscle tissues will still be larger, or have the ability to be larger, than the average women.

The problem with that logic is that then we should not be dividing sports by gender at all
Tonatiub he’s more so referencing height and athleticism, not gender
She is naturally genetically superior to her competitors. She shouldn't have to change that.
@@shank2088
You are already operating under the logic that "sports are just not fair". The only reason theres a different category for women in the first place is so that they dont have to compete with men.
I don't really understand the ruling on the "high level of testosterone". In my opinion that just boils down to luck. Are you going to force someone to be shorter if they are tall because that's an advantage of most sports.
Those were my thoughts exactly.
The thing is that you can simply ingest testosterone, wich isn't possible with body height. By allowing high levels every athlete would be forced to ingest that amount of testosterone to be able to keep up.
Testosteron level can be adjusted. body type can't be reversed.
@@Nusma
Some people are naturally stronger and gain muscle easier.
Aren’t... aren’t sports supposed to show their natural talent? Like- a talent that isn’t shown under the effects of drugs?
The irony right lol
Sports are about fair game, tell me how are you going to know when they use these hormones. All sports are about discrimination, because you can't have heavy weight vs light weight, it's unfair, even when weight terms to different values depending on the person. There are maximum weights and heights in some sports, for fair game's sake
@@TheCatvolador Sure, but when it is about competition at its highest level, sports are inherently unfair because of biology and that's okay. At these high levels, it is as much about biology as it is hard work and people shouldn't be pulled down for being naturally better.
@@TheCatvolador those rules aren't to make the game fair, they're to keep the athletes safe
TheCatvolador Fair to me would be that there are no handicaps or advantages. If someone is stronger and that gives them an advantage, then they are naturally stronger.

The equivalent for a male would be a guy with 10000 testosterone level. Who then complains that he is required to maintain a level closer to 5000.
Fuck no it'd make more sense to raise male test
There should be no division by gender. Just have everybody on same category or, when is the case, divided by objective terms such as weight. If woman can’t compete with man, too bad.

Thing is though, testosterone is THE anabolic steroid.
I think she might be one of the athletes suspected of being inter-sex.... if so it would be like she is on a rare natural steroid drip.
The ban is stupid. This is like banning a basketball player for being too tall, because it's unfair to short people.
Me and my tiny self would be down for that.
(I'm totally kidding I hate basketball)
No it’s like a man playing women’s basketball, but even on a more elevated level as running is a completely individual sport.

Tall people have an unfair advantage in most sports, are we going to regulate that too?
i don't think that's necessarily a fair comparison
a better one for the situation is if you had a small sect of people who had a disorder that made them 5-6 times taller than the normal person, to the point where there's no way to realistically play around them and succeed when you're playing against them
if short people can wear shoes that makes them much taller, yes, the shoes will have to be regulated
17 of the top 20 on trending are either established musicians/celebrities or traditional media. This is as of the posting of this video 5/2/19. I hope in a years time to see the opposite of this.
RUclips handpicks trending videos.
i'm just a spectator No doubt. There’s just so many times it’s reeeeally strange that an automated machine routinely picks tv shows over creators. If it really is the product of “the algorithm”, then it must be changed.
Ventroid Susan wobsjavgailsldkki said it’s partially algorithm and partially hand picked, no? The trending page is based off things that appeal to the largest demographic, are advertisers friendly, and are gaining views at the highest rate. The videos must meet those three requirements to make it, which is why things like music and late night show clips are perfect

Banning people for hate speech, violence or criminal behavior...
I get it.
Not sure all of these people are guilty of that. Slippery slope.
The left thinks that hate speech us anything that is said against the left.
Leftists are delusional and want any right leaning opinions silenced.
Exactly.

Banning phil for threatening throat punches?
I'm honestly terrified, this is straight out of 1984

@@Needformadness2 A women with an unfair advantage
@@EzekielMessenger geez which transgender pissed in your cereal this morning?

So many friends of mine go to UNCC and my heart dropped when my boyfriend sent “I’m okay but there’s a shooter in the room over from me.” My heart goes out to the victims and I’m so grateful you didn’t say his name or show his face.
Aren't all sports about "unfair," natural advantages? Some less than others, but I'd argue that it is always a factor to some degree.
You can read more here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_assignment
By the way, Caster Semenya has XY chromosomes, not that this has any bearing on the conversation whatsoever.

They have a misunderstanding of “high” levels of testosterone; it’s not equivalent to injections.
fearlessreview no but having a naturally higher level of testosterone will give a female athlete a greater advantage.
