+deflair lais Not necessarily. Some brilliant people can have a volatile nature. Which can be quite entertaining. I find Sam's approach/character more admirable, though.
+comanchio1976 no doubt. I just said that because Chunk doesn't have patience for shit when he hears something he disagrees with, then goes on with a very UN-intelligent response and sometimes rant that doesn't make any sort of sense. I dont totally agree with sam but i am more influenced to listen and ponder someones thoughts when they aren't screaming "OF COOUURRSSSE!" "JUST LOOK IT UP"
Cenk Uygur is maddeningly obtuse in this interview, seemingly determined to misunderstand well-explained distinctions and showing a disregard for the accurate representation of his guest's views.
I lost the very little respect I had for Cenk Uygur long ago. For all the self-righteous pomp he gives off when speaking on human rights, he has taken the position that the Armenian Genocide never happened. A self proclaimed Liberal that takes the same position as the current Turkish regime is most suspect.
from what I understand, Harris isnt expecting everyone to agree with his ideas on Islam, but what he does expect is to be able to raise issues for mature intellegent discussion without hysterical reactions. He has a point - very well illustrated by Affleck
I actually took a couple of notes of things which occurred to me during this discussion, but I haven't written it up yet. I'm not sure if I will, but it made some things very clear to me while watching it.
***** Thanks. Not sure it's really worth my time though. Most people here know my opinions already and I'm not certain most want to hear me repeating myself. :)
Cenk just discovered another branch of probability theory... professor “it’s probable that” student: “hmm, based on Cenk theory, we just don’t believe that!”
He really did. I understand what he was trying to say, but he missed Sam’s point entirely. It seems like he just disagrees with everything for the sake of it.

I tried uploading this to Pornhub, but apparently rape is not allowed by their terms of service. When i was a christian my church didnt even hand out or teach from the old testament. It was new testament only. And being born and raised in Northern Ireland i can tell you, with 100% confidence that its not about religion. Its about sovereignty. There are catholics and protestants on both sides. As well as atheists and other religions. The IRA which now is mostly catholic was started by protestant farmers. Not catholics. No one ive ever known, and ive known a lot of enlisted terrorists on both sides, have ever stated anything about faith or brought it up. They only talk about sovereignty. For 37 years sounded by this shit, and im not cherry picking. And yes there are religious people on both sides, some very religious. Never once heard any of them talk about religion in the context of Northern Ireland.
Not a conundrum at all. The liking system in RUclips is flawed when it comes to these types of videos because in this situation Cenk gets benefit when you like the video for Sam Harris or for Cenk. If you liked the whole discussion then I suppose you should like simply because Cenk's organisation made this particular discussion possible and comment here why you disagree with him.

As a Historian, I do need to make some corrections regarding both Cenk's and Sam's remarks about the Middle Ages. Cenk in particular seems to have been greatly influenced by TV documentaries, which unfortunately depict Europe's Middle Ages as an extremely bleak, barbaric and bruel time. This is largely a modern spin, however, as Sam pointed out. Contrary to Cenk's assertion, Europe DID have libraries; many of them in fact. One of the largest and most famous medieval libraries was that of the monastery of St. Gallen in Switzerland. It still exists today and it can be visited (it's a really beautiful place). Medieval libraries were private but this was equally true for the ones found in the Arab world. Public libraries are a very recent phenomenon in world history. Europeans also founded universities as early as the 12th century. The late Middle Ages in particular were a time of great learning and innovation. To claim that all the Christians back then were fanatics is ludicrous. There was an entire class of clerics who were really pious but ALSO very interested in the natur al sciences, medicine, engineering etc.. Today we call them scholastics. Scholasticism was highly influential in the history of science and philosophy and the Renaissance likely wouldn't have been possible without it. The Middle Ages also weren't as cruel as is often believed today. For example medieval people did NOT burn anyone at the stake. There were no witch hunts. All of these events happened during Early Modern times (16th-18th c.). Even the inquisition didn't really get going until Early Modern times. This is important because something significant happened right at the end of the Middle Ages: the reformation. Contrary to popular belief, it was the Protestants, NOT the Roman Catholic Church, who harbored deeply sexist, anti-semitic and otherwise toxic beliefs. This actually makes sense when you look at what these people preached. All the famous Protestant preachers used the phrase "sola la scriptura". Today we'd call them religious fundamentalists because this is literally what they were. They believed that only the Bible mattered and that it should be interpreted to the letter. The most radical of these religious zealots called themselves Puritans and ended up moving to North America. This is another common misconception about history by the way: the Puritans weren't pushed out of Europe. In fact, most European kingdoms at the time (and the UK in particular) treated them with a great deal of tolerance. The UK under Elizabeth I. even enacted some protections for Jews, so why would they hunt down fellow protestants? In truth, the Puritans WANTED to leave because they couldn't stomach the liberal values in Europe. They moved to North America specifically so they could build their own little theocracy over there, being sure that no one would bother them in their fanaticism. Lastly a word about anti-semitism during the Middle Ages: while anti-semitism doubtlessly existed, Historians generally differentiate between structure and events. It's important to do so because if we don't, we get a very twisted view of the past. For example natural catastrophes were singular events, they weren't structure. Now, in the case of anti-semitism, pogroms did occur but they didn't occur every day or even every year. Let's not forget that we're talking about a time spain of 1,000 years here! Not every person in the Middle Ages was a raging anti-semite; in fact, the overwhelming majority probably wasn't. People in the past weren't different from us today, they had just as much empathy and love as we do. People did have far less information back then of course but nowdays we've got a lot of fake news. In my opinion, religion certainly contributed to anti-semitic pogroms but it wasn't the decisive factor. The decisive factor was the lack of law enforcement. If 200 neonazis today would try to commit a pogrom in Cologne, the city government would immediately call on their police force and perhaps the federal government would even call in some military unit. Medieval cities did not have this option, so once a pogrom got going, there was very little anyone could do to stop it. And while it is true that Jews were prohibited from taking on various jobs, which is doubtlessly anti-semitic, they often excelled in fields such as medicine or trading, where they were usually highly respected by their Christian peers. So, it's important to be very nuanced about these things.
This was a very insightful and interesting read, thank you for sharing! Out of curiosity, do you have any material like books or fact based historical websites you would recommend to someone like myself whos not very knowledgeable on these things?
Raeven008 I guess that's the difference between learning to argue as a lawyer vs learning to argue as a philosopher. The fact that Sam Harris even has to waste his time on a so called "debate" like this is disappointing.
Tom Liu but if the mormon faith were real, jesus would return in the states, but if jesus is real than he would also return somewhere in the middleast. He wouldnt be able to be at both places. So its equally probable that a fiction characyer can return in either location because its based on fiction
Just Jax absolutely, that is why Cenk wasn't wrong saying that they were equally ridiculous, except he defended it wrong. But, it was just funny that they were both using math to prove their points, but math is about precision, and they both failed in that regard. For instance, on Cenk's part, 2 + 2 = 5 is not as wrong as 2 + 2 equals 6, it is 1 closer to the right answer. no one would think that 2+2 = 4.01 is equally as wrong as 2 + 2 = 10000000.
I wouldn't give them to much credit it's more likely thier arrogance that caused this situation driving it. When you turn off comments or take down a video your essentially admitting defeat and waving a white flag. Cenk and TYT will never admit wrong or fault they will just double down on it. Cenk's the kind of guy who walks away from this interview when any sane person can see he looked completely ridiculous and ignorant. And high five all his employees and ho "wow what a asshole that guy is, we really took it to him. I feel like that whent really well for us". And all his employees who are scared to criticize clap and agree.

I think you should actually watch The Rubin Report. I'll admit my attention span is too short to watch some of his guests all the way through in one sitting, but he allows them to have their say and stewards the conversation to illicit something meaningful. There's no agenda, canned questions or answers, censorship or preconceived opinions. It certainly has an anti-left bias but that is because the extreme left has hijacked the rest of the left, leaving the rest to voice their frustration with it.

Cenk level of hubris is just outstanding in this video. There is nothing more dangerous than a moron who thinks he's intelligent. Cenk thinks he won this debate along with the one with Ben Shapiro and it just goes to show his intellectual delusion.

@@rileystewart9165 His TYT is also paid for and funded by globalists with specific political interest. I have no doubt that they give him certain knowledge that he must know for certain topics. He was essentially a lawyer who studied management. This also contributes to his ability to think clearly on certain topics, regardless of how ignorant he chooses to act about certain things that people such as Sam Harris talks about here.
This is crazy, this is on tyt’s channel, and I’ve scrolled through the comments for 15 min and have yet to find a positive comment for Cenk. He’s so dense, he can’t grasp anything that Sam is saying, and he can’t understand that he’s not proving his points to anyone but himself. It’s pathetic.

Cenk - Makes Point Harris - Responds directly and backs up his viewpoints Cenk - Disagrees (or agrees and disagrees)... deflects with unrelated point Repeat for 3 hours.
Sam Harris comes across as calmly ...petulent, arrogant and egotistical as ever. The way he starts (calmly) is: how dare someone say something negative about him on the internet and what an asshole his host, Cenk, is. Wow. He's not gracious about the Interview at all, he's not original, and (to be honest) it's hard to stomach that this type of person has a legion of males that swamp every one of his videos with comments and congratulate themselves on how he wins every argument. You're following a rude, idiot who you've mistaken passive aggressive, pseudo intellectual verbosity for real world articulateness who is actually just petty and snide, a little racist and sexist and who no actual academic considers groundbreaking or original. But yes, he is passive aggressively calm which means he's superior, right?
someonegetsteve although your criticism of a lack of originality is warranted, misrepresenting his point as merely "how dare someone say something negative about me on the internet" is exactly the kind of thing he was defending. the principle of misrepresentation was the primary issue corrolorated by the fact that the aforementioned misrepresentation was done by journalists claiming or implying their professionality, and that Cenk was at fault for participating within that same sphere of intellectual dishonesty. I personally don't understand your claim that he is both somewhat racist and sexist, and for the most part, the conversation seemed to be an attempt at civility. if someone were interrupting me and misrepresenting my views, then yes; I would more than likely be passive aggressive.
Shank is the epitome of a moronic argumentative interviewer, who starts out with every possible “bad faith” position on someone’s views. Probably why no one cares about him anymore.
Robert Beaulieu He makes a cloudy statement at best. “There’s a lot of stuff we agree on, I’d say -At least- 90% of our views are similar if not identical” They then spend the next 3 hours discussing and debating ideas about religion and politics etc. The most common thing that comes out of Cenk’s mouth is “I disagree with you on that.... or I agree and disagree” just seems to stand to reason that they clearly don’t agree on the majority of important issues so his premise at the beginning was unfounded. Not that hard to understand unless it’s you apparently.
Robert Beaulieu I don’t like Cenk or the young Turks. I’m not overly fond of Sam Harris either, I value his opinion and intellect far more than Cenk true but not out of a fondness for him over TYTs. Maybe I am. Maybe you’re not reading enough into it. I have to surmise that you’ve exposed your own leaning in this discussion. Acting as if disagreeing with Cenk means I’m hating or taking a side. PS You made the smart ass comment first. Not me. You want to throw the line at me I’ll throw it right back.
+RapMetalChannel clearly I meant the negativity against Cenk. He's a bombastic, incorrigible, infallible, dickhead. Sure I agree with him on many things but overall he's a douche that asserts himself beyond his ability.
+bm3racer no need to call names but I think Sam is just honest and realistic about the threat we face. He's not afraid of calling things as they are, for example you simply have no reason (at this time) to be worried about a Buddhist being a suicide bomber, it is not racism, not bigotry, not intolerance or islamaphobia, it is just the reality we face.
and early in the debate he states that even though people disavow their birth religions they still tend to get defensive when someone criticizes them....he meant that towards sam i think but its blatantly obvious thays why he defends islam so furiously and attacks jews and christians. its his familial religion. bottom line whos the ones commiting the atrocities here and now? which religion is unable to catch up with the times?
25:35 Cenk basically refuses to admit the validity of the Pew poll (and his guest's claim that "extremists" does not mean "30% of the religion".) 26:10 Cenk: "NO!"
@Kim Numero Uno The Armenian genocide thing passed. Wasn't that addressed on TYT by Cenk and Ana? Having a different opinion on Islam vs other major religions does not mean it's a bias. I see how his reactions appear biased, but I think that's just how he converses. I'm with Sam Harris on this debate/discussion, regardless.
Also true. He can't understand that hitting two birds with an arrow is less probable than hitting one. He thinks it's the same probability because it's so small. Very dumb guy indeed.
@@jokefrost7930 He claims that he is atheist that means he believes religion is man made then in three hours he try to prove that man is religion made. The way he sits on the chair, he acts like an intellect for sure:)

11:51 "Just because you disagree with someone doesn't mean they're wrong"...But Sam Harris was just talking about how they misrepresent his views, not their opinions on the issues.
***** Yeah that's what I said. What Sam Harris was discussing wasn't an issue where many epistemic peers may disagree with each other on. It was simply that journalists misrepresented his views and all you need to do is find what he actually said vs what the "journalists" reported. Cenk was making it sound as if it was something that couldn't be sorted out/
M3Lucky I love how when Sam talks about journalistic integrity and pulling the video, Cenk responds with 'well no, then I'd have to hear from Salon, etc, etc.' Great. Tell Salon that their Werleman has been outed as a serial plagiarist and hang up the phone. Easy. Basically Cenk is being lazy. He may as well have said, "I don't want to uphold the show's journalistic integrity because then I'll have to explain myself to whiners."
runreilly Oh thank you for saying this, and pointing it out. This was driving me crazy. Sam challenged his journalistic integrity and Cenk's response was completely unsatisfying and missing the point, which he continued to do for the majority of this discussion.
I'm so confused. Is Cenk intentionally pretending not to understand what Sam Harris is saying or is he serious. Either way it's annoying. I don't know how Sam Harris didn't didn't get frustrated and walk out. And the way Cenk just kept putting words in his mouth and then Sam had to keep explaining why that wasn't his point of view. But for the most part it was only a few instances. I don't get how Cenk thinks that Sam should be responsible for people that misunderstand his views and then go on to misrepresent him. He's being as clear as possible, it's not his problem if people are too stupid or too lazy to understand. Also why can't Cenk just admit that the doctrine of Islam is worse. It very obviously is. It seems to me that Cenk wants Sam to provide a simplified answer to a vastly overly complicated issue. It's ridiculous. Great discussion for the most part!
I think Cenk was just saying that Sam has a way of setting up hypotheticals that are just begging to be taken out of context, or are concerning even in context because Sam sometimes writes one thing and means another. Like saying you can kill people for their beliefs when what he really means is you can kill people once they have committed violent action as a result of their beliefs and have every intention of committing more.
Sam is doing a lot of "I interpret christianity/islam/whatever this way and so everyone else must interpret it this way too". He's saying "you can't find justification for X in Y", then saying "if someone says they did something because of Y we should take them at their word"... well then, there clearly IS a justification for X in Y, just not in his particular interpretation of it. He seems to think he knows it all, that because he doesn't adhere to a specific belief and he can see many ways of interpreting the books, that therefore they're the ONLY ways of interpreting the books. And he keeps reiterating the same point, that Z is worse than Y because you justify X in Z but not in Y when many people, however irrationally (which is a given because religion itself is not rational), have done just that.
Person Oisels no u actually completely missed the point. Sam's clearly said each religion can be interpreted differently; and his point, which seem pretty logical, is that there are certain aspects of a religion that makes certain interpretation more likely(for example, difference between Muhammad and Jesus and their teaching), which Cenk refused to admit for some reason.
StgAeY Actually, Cenk pointed out that history proves it's just as easy to view christianity like that as it is Islam. Sam will then say "but jesus blah blah" but no, that doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if it's easier for YOU to rationalise being kind in christianity, history clearly shows that it's just as easy for the masses to accept huge amounts of violence in christianity's name as it is Islam's, if not more so.
@@jensen8058 personally, I find that hard to believe. I'm an atheist, so I find it easy to believe that he's an atheist. For a Muslim to leave Islam and declare he's an atheist is not a small deal, and most likely would not be done for such a stupid reason.
I don't believe at all that Cenk is failing to grasp the various criticisms that lie unique in Islam, he is simply practicing selective-ignorance and defending it out of favour for his mother culture and even says as much early in the interview.
If we talk barbarism it is more of christians than muslims. It is in the Quran that you get if you kill a human being is as though you are killing the whole of humanity. When Jews are persecuted in the hands of christians it is muslims who always protected them. What islam is against for instance immorality, abuse other people and kill other without a reason. It is absurd someone like Sam Harris to defend west and attack. When Muslims ruled the holy land they protected all people who live in Holy. Later when christian crusaders captured they killed almost all people in the town regardless of their religion Muslims, Jews etc. When later Salahudin Al Ayubi conquered he did not kill the people in the town regardless of their affiliation. Look today what christians are doing in support of zionists persecution of the Muslims in Palestinians. Therefore, when you compare the followers of the two Muslims are superior in terms of high moral ground compared to christians. Christian UK and USA (christians) who we can not finish the atrocities you have done to the other non christians communities in the 20th and 21 cenntury. Start colonialisation of other people, viatnam war, Middle east disaster, Afghanistan onslaught (20 years of atrocities), continued support of apartheid zionist state and so on and so forth. If we compare as whole people Muslims were always more peaceful than christians. That is fact.
@@Noah-sl8cuFriend, Sam laid it out plain. Islam is unique in its promise of paradise, virgins, and everlasting happiness for those who die in the process of murdering and converting as many non-Muslims as possible. Which explains why the vast majority of suicide bombers and terrorists currently are Muslim. And Cenk never refuted or even acknowledged this point (as of an hour into the talk) as if his subconscious refused to face it.
A genius... People watch these videos just to see him make a fool of himself. Doesn't TYT make money off view counts? Someone is making bank off of his stupidity. I still believe he thinks he's winning though.
Actually he did not at all. I have noticed this with atheists before they do not think for themselves, they think like dawkins or Harris...etc...just as bad as religious people really.
Yeah, I've noticed he gets things wrong now and then but I don't think it's worth ditching the entire network. I don't have time to read ten papers a day and rely on TYT to let me know when cops is cappin` folks and no one else talks about it.
He gets things wrong now and then is not the criticism. The criticism is intentionally misrepresenting your opponents viewpoints in order to persuade viewers to your side. When your news source does this regularly, as TYT does, then it's time to unsubscribe
Quite a bit. Mr. Harris was speaking to an arrogant child. Cenk is embarassing, unwilling to listen. Cenk just waits for his turn to speak; most of the time not waiting but rudely interrupting.
Yea Sam Harris acts like a 5 year old. Everytime you see a Sam Harris video he has to spend a half hour defending himself. Watching Harris speak is like watching Donald Trump.
Trying to get other people to understand you should have the highest priority in a discussion. With Cenk constantly ignoring points he made, that did already answer his question, Sam had no other choice but to elaborate on his ideas and stands on certain issues. If there was someone that acted like a 5 yeah old, it would sadly be cenk here...
Are you kidding? This guy Sam Harris is an embarrassment to real academics! He’s not very bright at all! Cenk is just being classy and biting his tongue.
Sam lays out clear concise arguments, none of which are bigoted or racist. His points are data driven and relevant to today's world. He is indeed considering all sides of the argument. Cenk continually sets up straw-men of Sam's position, as many have done. If you rationally consider Sam's position and carefully listen to his wording they make a lot of sense.
He lays out clear and consice arguments many of wich are wrong, like the idea that the Syrian or Iraqi people would care if ISIS soldiers died in an airstrike. What they do care about, as we have seen in dronestrike tormented areas, is if their familymembers die and civilians. The fact that Harris seems to ignore this is yet another idication that this guy is taken way to seriously and doesnt know what the hell he is talking about.
Auraruth8 Mark Hermanson The problem I have is that Cenk really can't understand sam's VERY simple point about doctrines having straight lines to how people behave and how christianity and islam are not the same.
Denchanter357 Right, he corners Cenk on this point twice. 1. Why aren't the Christians in Palestine participating in the violence, they are in the same socio-economic position. 2. Why do we take a person at their word when they claim to have committed crime for material reasons, but some dismiss it when they give a religious reason. They both agree on most of it .. it seems they disagree as to what weight all of the environmental, political, economic, religious, mental, and societal factors hold. Fine, they can all play a role.. but it's only religion claiming to be the one and only solution, the system that claims to trump all other factors.
Mark Hermanson Denchanter357 i think cenk clearly understand sam's premise of beliefs leading to action. and sam does make logical conclusions based on this premise, which however are wrong. not because he got the premise wrong, but because his premises are insufficient. as a counter-point to your question, if doctrine leads to behaviour, then i find it logical to ask why there hasn't been any muslim voilence in USA? here is a thought experiment, i hope you will be honest with yourself: if all the muslims in middle east suddenly by some miracle renounce islam right now, do you think the violence would stop tomorrow? the honest answer is no! i find cenk's point of view more nuanced. it seems to me that harris is so engaged in his own thoughts that he forgot that some of his writings are squarely in a political arena. and there are much better political analysts of the middle east than harris. also being irreligious or being an atheist is not equivalent to being an islamophobe.
Sam wouldn't touch that with a barge pole. He would have to explain why the North Star stays stationary and hasn't moved significantly throughout human history.
People act like this was a battle of wits or a debate where one party is the victor, but really this was a success for both parties, where clarity of ideas was the goal, and clarity was achieved. before this conversation had happened there was a lot of guessing as to what each individual thought deep down on these issues, especially in regards to Sam Harris, but by the end of it, even if one disagreed with Harris, at least one has a much more clarified understanding of his view, and the same can be said about one's understanding of Uyger's view. This conversation was a success.
Guess the fact that TYT continuously embarrass themselves like this had nothing to do with it xD Wouldn't wanna be associated with this shit show either, Rubin made the correct choice. Even Kyle Kulinski has regularly called out Cenk lately.
Rick Jacobs bruh I saw that interview and JBP didn’t destroy anyone. They just talked pass each other that first time. I really hope they both get it right with those new talks they are doing. I say this as an avid Peterson and Harris fan.

James Lourenco yep. That’s my issue with a lot of the left (saying this as a left leaning person). They’ve become so deeply embedded with identity politics, PC culture, and “protect ‘brown people’ at all costs” that they’re unable to objectively analyze problematic behavior/ideology. That’s why they need to resort to “well if you’re objectively analyzing problems within Islam, it’s just because you’re prejudiced against Muslims and therefore you think all Muslims are bad”. No reasonable, logical person even needs to say “not all....” because a logical person already knows that nothing applies to ALL people, because you don’t know ALL people so you can’t reasonably make an argument applying a characteristic to all people of any group. Again, a logical person doesn’t need to hear “not all....” prefaced in an argument because it’s already implicitly implied that nothing applies to ALL. only idiots need to clarify an argument with “not all” and it’s just a tactic to divert from valid criticisms and to avoid having an honest conversation about problematic behaviors among their choice “protected groups”

Yes it's more realistic a white man shooting a bunch of people is mentally ill vs a group of like minded individuals shoot a bunch of people or act against them as a group. Sure obviously there are people within the group that are mentally ill.
Disclaimer: I’m a huge fan of Sam. Been subscribed to Waking Up for many years and listens to his podcast. And this is the second time I’ve seen Cenk speak. The first was on Lex Fridman’s podcast. I’m surprised by how much people here hate on Cenk. Even though I’m on Sam’s side on the majority of the discussion, Cenk is making good points. If you truly listen to the substance of it. Just wanted to see how many people agree with me here.
as an xmuslim, i can wholeheartedly say, Sam understand Islam's doctrine and behaviors more than any muslim ive met, his precision in language and reason is really special. *~I respect Cenk Uygur~*, but he is really doing a bad job at this interview, he seems reluctant to actually tackle any of the arguments proposed, just looking for his turn to speak and come up with a counter argument, most of which are irrelevant. 1 hour into the discussion, CENK, huuuuge disappointment!
It almost feels that Cenk is being to quick to judge, while arguing out of his sense of insecurity towards Sam's reasoning. rather than the points presented!
Most of his arguments are reasonably founded with solid statistical/mathematical/logical basis, doesn't mean they are 100% correct but rather are founded in good reason/logic and therefore excellent starting points to the topic at hand I agree with the notion that Islam of all Abrahimic religions is being subject to more VALID criticism, rightfully so, duo many finer points and fundamentalism and literalism only found in islam! Islam is in dire need for reformation and less literalism, otherwise it will be responsible for its downfall, i have little doubt about that I like the ideas about doctrine and behavior and the links between them. His notion that "extremism" is infact the norm in most Muslim countries is 100% true, ive seen this countless times in my experience, specifically because he made the distinction between "professed believe" vs "actual belief" - a crucial point because theoretically islam is an extremest ideology, but until cognitive dissonance affests your subject, it is considered very normal Islamic behavior. Is there sthg in particular you were asking about?
Cenk, just give it up and say "I've got a soft spot for Islam because I used to be one, and my family still is. Therefore, I am going to deflect by tossing in all these red herrings like 'But..but..but Christianity!'" It makes perfect sense for you to feel that way, and nobody would begrudge you those feelings. Just be honest about it.
......not really. As well, any person with real self confidence has no need to belittle others as a grammar nazi lol U r entitled to ur opinion. I’ll allow u to believe that I cant spell your lol
What would be the point of a discussion if there are not disagreements? Most of Cenk's rebuttals were forced, I can't believe people don't see this.... he is merely playing the part of a troll.
You can say that about both sides. They both don't agree with each other and focused on the nuances they don't agree on. Sounds like you just chose one side from the start and didn't listen with an open mind.
Do you think HE realizes that? Nope. He ended this interview, looked in the mirror and said, "I just slammed a prominent intellectual. I am...CENK" He is THAT guy.
@@dg1431 It was an insignificant contention by Harris which is Cenk's point. It's likewise founded on a bogus premise that the LDS (Mormons) has a more specific location of where Jesus will return to. Ordinary Christianity or the New Testament expresses a quite certain spot of where Jesus will descend from which is Mt of Olives close to Jerusalem. Cenk does insinuate that reality when he says something like "for what reason does it make a difference whether he returns to Jerusalem or to Missouri? He ain't returning."
Proud Leftist that doesn’t mean anything. There’s plenty muslims that are ignorant to what Islam is, just like there are many Christians ignorant to Christianity. See the Nation of Islam and westboro baptists
Warp Darkmatter yea but he left Islam after he found out it was wrong , so he is more educated than a random Muslim , also he knows more than Sam as Sam knows about Christianity , not Islam
@@proudleftist6899 Honestly, I want to adress your username. How can you promote and support a group of people mislabeling and attacking others who don't conform to their ever-changing radical ideology?
Where to even start. This is what happens when you get a highly intelligent human being in an argument with a human being who thinks he’s intelligent. It’s painful to watch Cenk. He operates in this realm of “everything needs to be equal”. These types of people do not care about facts or reality. They just care about things “being fair”. This is Cenks entire basis for his identity and ideology. Sam brings up the point about salon and how they don’t do their journalistic duties, basically. With fact checking etc.. Cenk responds with a gross oversimplification and overgeneralizes saying “well they have the right to say it”. 9 years later we’ve seen Cenk in all his wisdom just absolutely slander people for there point, and state “there wrong” etc… I genuinely cannot stand the types of people who have no grasp of reality and equate everything to “fairness”. He’s not a “better” person, he’s just spineless and emotional.
Why is Cenk point blank refusing to understand the core of Sam's argument? Given that he's USED Sam's very exact viewpoint in other contexts when it suits him? Is this inability to "get it" genuine or contrived on Cenk's part?
You'll find Cenk's behaviour is very common among some Western ex-Muslims. They just aren't able to see Islam for what it is. It's almost like they are blinded in some way. Many people leave Islam for a variety of reasons. Those in the West, mainly the US, have been brought up in a Westernised version of Islam and tend to leave Islam because it just doesn't seem rational to them. It just doesn't make sense. Whereas those outside the West who've really tasted the bitterness of Islam leave because they find it immoral and monstrous. Cenk just can't acknowledge the Islam that Sam is referring to as being the norm, the orthodoxy which in fact it is. On Cenk's part there's also an element of sticking up for 'his people' that he feels he has to do. Watch the first minute of the video again and you will hear Cenk state he still has some allegiance/feelings towards Islam. Once he said that I knew how this conversation was going to pan out.
I've half a mind to sit through this whole thing again this time with pen and paper and then rip to shreds every single point Of Cenk's that's gone awry and all over the place and then put them on here.. but I'm thinking "what's the point, what's the point?" I'm so upset. I'm not coming back here now. Keep your two timing swinging pendulums ( Reza Aslans) of the world.
It's because Sams opinion is so bat shit crazy Cenk is thinking if I explain it to him in simple terms he might get it but Sam still doesn't get it. Jesus is better than Mohamed and Jesus has got more of a chance to show up in LA than Mississippi. Come on guys us atheists are suppose to be the smart ones, please don't listen to Sams dribble and repeat it to anyone.
Me, a Christian background atheist, watching a Muslim background atheist and a Jewish background atheist all trapped in a sympathetic position for our backgrounds. Can we all just recluse ourselves?
This was not an out classing at all. Sam convinces me more often of his position, but Cenk makes a great case on a lot of it. IfI weren't already of an opinion, this would not have been enough to sway me one way or another. (as it shouldn't for anyone, but I'm tlaking in the context of this is all we have.)
Cody Howell yes. Worst misrepresentation of a guest. She purposely didn’t look at his opinion and inserted her own into every single question. Like sam said smelling smoke and yelling fire when in actuality he was making toast.
borhanus Then watch it again, because you didn't understand what he said. He is not playing any blame game, but you have to be honest about that religions are not the same and some religions are worse than others.
I think the reason why you think Cenk is being unreasonable is largely because of the way each other's body language moves when they discuss things. Sam Harris keeps a much much cooler leveled facial and body expression that Cenk does and I think because of how similar each other's points are, similar in relevance to the typical viewer's views, it does not help Cenk to be so outwardly emotive - it's not something he can change either - such techniques only work when your opponent in discussion has a massive point of difference from one's views.
"I think the reason why you think Cenk is being unreasonable is largely because of the way each other's body language moves when they discuss things. " No, I think the reason has much more to do with Cenk actually being unreasonable.
19:06 Cenk is wrong. It’s more likely that "Jesus comes back" than "Jesus comes back to Missouri." The first scenario is a broader category than the second. The second possibility is a subset of the first. More specific conditions represents a smaller probability. 1:06:41 Well this is awkward here in 2024.
Seriously, lol.... This video alone can probably account for tens of thousands of unsubs... Libs usually cut off access to the information well when it doesn't help their cause.
+vader1a I agree that he would have a different opinion, but not bc he was muslim. The left tends to shy away from criticizing minorities, less powerful etc. I agree with most of what Sam says, but when he criticizes Islam my first reaction is to say no Sam you're wrong. Only after I give it a few moments of thought I realize Sam makes a lot sense. So I think it has more to do with Cenk trying to stick up for the underdog.
19:00 Sam is wrong. Mathematicians won’t refer probability theory - it will come down to discrete math 101… truth tables. “False implies true” is equally true as some other “false implies true”.
Was trying to think of a comment that would be most accurate. This is it haha Feels like Sam is playing chess, Cenk is playing checkers, or trying to colour within the lines.
Got 34 minutes in, and had to turn it off. Cenk cannot unpack anything Sam says. I am not a fan of Sams beliefs, but he’s a genius, extremely patient and articulate, and I’d have a beer with the guy any day.
Some where but deff not all of them did you watch the video he looks for Sam's quotes multiple times in those papers. He even comments a few times one such being "I can not find your quote I have over 100 papers here" or something pretty close to that.
Cenk seems unwilling to give Sam an inch in trying to understand what he's actually saying. Could have been a much more effective dialogue if he had attempted to do so.
***** Dude, look at all the other comments. For the plurality of top comments, the initial remark is responded to germanely. But because she's a woman, you disregard the content, and only compliment her on her looks. I'm not down with the whole micro-aggression, SJW froth, but jesus, at least establish a pretense for your trivializing response. :\
I saw clips of this video and as a TYT fan, I was disappointed with Cenk and his ultimately cutting off Sam Harris' points of view with the truth of these Islamic Jihadists are causing the most trouble in this world through mass murder and avoiding the topic to not accept the realities of these atrocities. Good job Sam Harris.
Eleanor Fitz It seems every time Sam makes a valid point and backs it up with strong evidence, Cenk has to go back to acting as if he's being somehow intolerant or stereotypical, no matter how clear Sam makes it that this isn't the case.
I disagree, in fact Cenk continues throughout the interview to rephrase and wrap his questions up for the audience, he may have to work on his expressive wide eyed nature which lends itself to you thinking he may not be as intellectually prowess as Sammy boy....but I disagree. He in fact as the interviewer, has a much greater burden than Sam since he has to carry the interview, keep the pace, know the next question, listen in the moment and keep the audience informed all at the same time. Which is alot harder than it looks.
+iDalisMediaTV Hosting an interview is a sign of intellectual prowess? do you know how dumb that is? something tells me that you would be unable to think your way out of cardboard box.
One of them is trained in philosophy, where one class would teach focus on truth values and how to construct arguments. Frankly, some of the arguments, while valid are not constructive. The goal of those arguments are clearly to illustrate that divide, and ultimately to discredit.
Well, he might not be much of a philosopher. But that wasn't the most important point in the debate was it? For example his points about slippery slop of torture is not a bad one, just because Harris manages to sound more brainy and logical doesn't mean he is right. Now it's Trump's presidency. I'm glad torture is not allowed.
Almost not believable that as Sam explains people in North Korea may need 20 years to get to democracy, Cenk needs to clarify that he isn't saying north koreans are incapable of democracy... It is actually painful.
Just listen to Cenk on the war in Israel. He starts sweating with anger defending the Palestinians, but his blood pressure is totally unaffected by Jewish babies getting decapitated. He lies to everyone, and perhaps himself, trying to look like he's impartial.
I wonder how many times Sam thought to himself "ugh I wish Hitch was here... My pure and elegant reasoning is not penetrating, I need this guy to be intellectually head butted right now and I'm too nice to do it... Hitch, miss you bro"
Entirely agree that Sam is too nice. I understand where he's coming from in being nice as he probably doesn't want a shouting match to ensue, but Hitch was someone who could be harsh in a way that was constructive. I miss Christopher every day.
I'm more intrigued by Sam's patience than his intelligence.
vpr3i Medititation for many years.
His patience is on another level. I admire it.
those 2 go hand in hand, you cant separate.
This is what happens when you play football or pro boxing. ;-)
from what I understand, Harris isnt expecting everyone to agree with his ideas on Islam, but what he does expect is to be able to raise issues for mature intellegent discussion without hysterical reactions.

My thoughts exactly!
Yes, it's highly likely he probably will never read most comments here because there's too many. What is it you are trying to convey?

Credit to TYT for not disabling the comments section
I wouldn't give them to much credit it's more likely thier arrogance that caused this situation driving it. When you turn off comments or take down a video your essentially admitting defeat and waving a white flag. Cenk and TYT will never admit wrong or fault they will just double down on it.
I cannot disagree more. Sam Harris is a fake intellectual.
hahhahahahaha
someonegetsteve
although your criticism of a lack of originality is warranted, misrepresenting his point as merely "how dare someone say something negative about me on the internet" is exactly the kind of thing he was defending. the principle of misrepresentation was the primary issue corrolorated by the fact that the aforementioned misrepresentation was done by journalists claiming or implying their professionality, and that Cenk was at fault for participating within that same sphere of intellectual dishonesty.
I personally don't understand your claim that he is both somewhat racist and sexist, and for the most part, the conversation seemed to be an attempt at civility. if someone were interrupting me and misrepresenting my views, then yes; I would more than likely be passive aggressive.
It must be scary to find out that you're totally outmatched and still have 2 hours and 59 minutes to go in the interview!
Shank is the epitome of a moronic argumentative interviewer, who starts out with every possible “bad faith” position on someone’s views. Probably why no one cares about him anymore.
if cenk didn't raise his voice every time he opened his mouth the interview would be 50% shorter.
Cenk found out quick didn't he ? LMAO !
Not scary if it's actually an interview. This however was not...

Cenk: I think we probably agree on about 90% of the issues.
*Proceeds to disagree with every logical point Sam makes*
He maybe was talking about the 10 percent they don't agree. Not Hard to understand unless it's you apparently.
Robert Beaulieu He makes a cloudy statement at best. “There’s a lot of stuff we agree on, I’d say -At least- 90% of our views are similar if not identical”
They then spend the next 3 hours discussing and debating ideas about religion and politics etc.

+bm3racer You clearly have no idea what racism is people like you destroys the important word racism. You stupid bigoted racist:)
Check says he is atheist but gets reeeeeeeal defensive when it comes to Islam.
and early in the debate he states that even though people disavow their birth religions they still tend to get defensive when someone criticizes them....he meant that towards sam i think but its blatantly obvious thays why he defends islam so furiously and attacks jews and christians. its his familial religion. bottom line whos the ones commiting the atrocities here and now? which religion is unable to catch up with the times?
25:35 Cenk basically refuses to admit the validity of the Pew poll (and his guest's claim that "extremists" does not mean "30% of the religion".) 26:10 Cenk: "NO!"
Which implies nothing except that he cares about people, even those he does not agree with.
He even laughed off atheist who used to be Christian's, saying people always defend the ideology they grew up with, then fights hard to defend islam.

11:51 "Just because you disagree with someone doesn't mean they're wrong"...But Sam Harris was just talking about how they misrepresent his views, not their opinions on the issues.
*****
Yeah that's what I said. What Sam Harris was discussing wasn't an issue where many epistemic peers may disagree with each other on. It was simply that journalists misrepresented his views and all you need to do is find what he actually said vs what the "journalists" reported.
Cenk was making it sound as if it was something that couldn't be sorted out/
*****
Yeah I know, I pretty much just said what you said lol :P
M3Lucky I love how when Sam talks about journalistic integrity and pulling the video, Cenk responds with 'well no, then I'd have to hear from Salon, etc, etc.'
Great. Tell Salon that their Werleman has been outed as a serial plagiarist and hang up the phone. Easy.
Basically Cenk is being lazy. He may as well have said, "I don't want to uphold the show's journalistic integrity because then I'll have to explain myself to whiners."
He might as well say that just because someone says things that are untrue doesn't mean they are wrong.
runreilly Oh thank you for saying this, and pointing it out.
Great discussion for the most part!
.
If I was to wager a guess, I would wager that 95% of why Cenk left Islam is because of bacon.

Speaking on things you have no knowledge hurts yourself more than the people you’re talking about, if you can read i suggest doing that more
@Noah-sl8cu which is a non argument. Let me translate what you just said so absolutely everybody is on the same page: "lol no".
@@Noah-sl8cuFriend, Sam laid it out plain. Islam is unique in its promise of paradise, virgins, and everlasting happiness for those who die in the process of murdering and converting as many non-Muslims as possible.
Auraruth8 He explains clearly how bad he thinks collateral damage is. Did you watch the whole thing?

It almost feels that Cenk is being to quick to judge, while arguing out of his sense of insecurity towards Sam's reasoning. rather than the points presented!
TheSabatuer Give me some of the arguments that Sam Harris made which intrigues you.
Most of his arguments are reasonably founded with solid statistical/mathematical/logical basis, doesn't mean they are 100% correct but rather are founded in good reason/logic and therefore excellent starting points to the topic at hand
I agree with the notion that Islam of all Abrahimic religions is being subject to more VALID criticism, rightfully so, duo many finer points and fundamentalism and literalism only found in islam! Islam is in dire need for reformation and less literalism, otherwise it will be responsible for its downfall, i have little doubt about that
I like the ideas about doctrine and behavior and the links between them.
TheSabatuer > 'theoretically islam is an extremist ideology'

Cenk, just give it up and say "I've got a soft spot for Islam because I used to be one, and my family still is. What would be the point of a discussion if there are not disagreements? Most of Cenk's rebuttals were forced, I can't believe people don't see this.... he is merely playing the part of a troll.
I know. He's so full of it.
What are they gonna sit there and talk about what they agree on? Boring...
@@ZagrosŞêxbizin - No, I got what you were saying. I was being nice about it.
What I should have said instead was “Yea no shit Sherlock!”
You can say that about both sides. They both don't agree with each other and focused on the nuances they don't agree on. Sounds like you just chose one side from the start and didn't listen with an open mind.
Good grief. Cenk is out of his league here.
Do you think HE realizes that? Nope. He ended this interview, looked in the mirror and said, "I just slammed a prominent intellectual. I am...CENK"
He is THAT guy.
@@AshMaybeAllen 😂😔 it's both funny and sad lol
@@AshMaybeAllen Would you be able to clarify why you concur that Cenk was out of his league here? I am of the assessment that he was definitely not.
@@mosehlewi3081 Because he was wrong on all counts and couldn't understand basic probability. Clear now?
@@dg1431 It was an insignificant contention by Harris which is Cenk's point. It's likewise founded on a bogus premise that the LDS (Mormons) has a more specific location of where Jesus will return to. Ordinary Christianity or the New Testament expresses a quite certain spot of where Jesus will descend from which is Mt of Olives close to Jerusalem. Cenk does insinuate that reality when he says something like "for what reason does it make a difference whether he returns to Jerusalem or to Missouri? He ain't returning."
Here after Joe Rogan said Cenk was out of his league on this interview
You got a link?
Cenk is a ex Muslim , he knows more about Islam than Sam dose
"I came here to clean up this mess" is code for I'm about to ruin your whole career
Damn right XD
hahahahah so glad he done that,

This Cenk guy doesn't even understand basic probability theory, which is intuitive
Or he just doesn’t want to acknowledge that Sam ist right. Either way, it is all you need to know about him, to not take him serious in any way.
If cenk is more of an antitheist than an atheist then he has a point on the probability thing
No one who knows anything about probability theory would ever call it "intuitive"... :)
@@axlandersson yeah, hence why I said basic probability theory. Missed the mark
@@daffycuck3695 What is "basic" probability theory? And how is it intuitive? Nice try.
Why is Cenk point blank refusing to understand the core of Sam's argument? Given that he's USED Sam's very exact viewpoint in other contexts when it suits him? Is this inability to "get it" genuine or contrived on Cenk's part?
He was purposely articulating that he rejects Sam's argument as factually incorrect.
Fashion Earrings It all starts with "I know some good Muslims." In Cenk's case, it's his family. He doesn't want what Sam is saying to be true.
The only way I could like Sam more is if he lit a cigar and did finger guns at the end of every debate.
This is a 100% actual fact. :)
If your comment was any more classless it would be a Marxist utopia.
You PC bro?

That’s hilarious
I've just realised, Cenk is Harris's Cathy Newman.
Gage Westerhouse so what your saying is that Islam wants to be dominated by men?
Hahaha
So you're saying...
SO what you're saying is Sam is a racist atheist who hates women.
So what you're saying is that the moon is made out of cheese?
I thought the same exact thing when I heard him say, "so what you're saying is?"
Omg Cenk was outclassed. This was embarrassing. Like cringe worthy
You have a clear bias.
@@michalandrejmolnar3715 you're right, he is biased in favor of logic
*Of coooooouuuurse*
This was not an out classing at all. Sam convinces me more often of his position, but Cenk makes a great case on a lot of it. IfI weren't already of an opinion, this would not have been enough to sway me one way or another. (as it shouldn't for anyone, but I'm tlaking in the context of this is all we have.)
totally embarrassing for Cenk to think that he should be on the same stage as Sam Harris.
This conversation is more relevant than ever right now in October-November 2024
I've never seen someone blatantly miss so many points in one conversation.
You haven’t seen much debate I guess. Really good one with Jordan Peterson where the interviewer strawmans him like 30 times.
@@josiahz21 The one with Cathy Newman? that one is terrible
Cody Howell yes. Worst misrepresentation of a guest. She purposely didn’t look at his opinion and inserted her own into every single question. Like sam said smelling smoke and yelling fire when in actuality he was making toast.
It is a disappointment that Cenk didn't seem to understand logic or reasoning and seemed more interested in rebutting rather than discussing
IMO he does understand. He is being intellectually dishonest.

The irony of your comment is that most of Harris's criticism is specifically directed at Christians.
Sam: **makes a valid point spelled out clear as day and everyone understands**
Cenk: *"That's such a total excuse Sam!"*
FACEPALM
I think the reason why you think Cenk is being unreasonable is largely because of the way each other's body language moves when they discuss things.
Sam Harris keeps a much much cooler leveled facial and body expression that Cenk does and I think because of how similar each other's points are, similar in relevance to the typical viewer's views, it does not help Cenk to be so outwardly emotive - it's not something he can change either - such techniques only work when your opponent in discussion has a massive point of difference from one's views.
It's also because Cenk is mostly unreasonable in this video, and Sam is mostly correct.
Yeah, I only listened to the video without watching the screen and had the exact same thought as op, so sorry, you're wrong with that analysis.
sad but true...
"I think the reason why you think Cenk is being unreasonable is largely because of the way each other's body language moves when they discuss things. "
No, I think the reason has much more to do with Cenk actually being unreasonable.
19:06 Cenk is wrong. It’s more likely that "Jesus comes back" than "Jesus comes back to Missouri." The first scenario is a broader category than the second. The second possibility is a subset of the first. More specific conditions represents a smaller probability.

Harris is actually a vulcan, he's never lost his cool in a debate.
I like to ask myself if Sam had said the same things as he stated about Islam but instead towards Christianity, would Cenk have had a problem?
Totally.
+starryian007 deep inside he still likes islam more than other religiouns (even though he doesnt belive it) he still protects it
+vader1a I agree that he would have a different opinion, but not bc he was muslim.
+vader1a Probably not. That's the saddest part.
+MrMarioSm That and his hatred of Christians and Jews.
19:00 Sam is wrong. Mathematicians won’t refer probability theory - it will come down to discrete math 101… truth tables. “False implies true” is equally true as some other “false implies true”.
I think I just found Sam's "Cathy newman"
Sam: makes nuanced, educated statement.
Cenk: I'm 50/50 on that

Was trying to think of a comment that would be most accurate. This is it haha
Feels like Sam is playing chess, Cenk is playing checkers, or trying to colour within the lines.
Got 34 minutes in, and had to turn it off. Cenk cannot unpack anything Sam says. I am not a fan of Sams beliefs, but he’s a genius, extremely patient and articulate, and I’d have a beer with the guy any day.
It's a decent comparison. Both enjoy misrepresenting their interlocutors positions. Cenk does it more subtly, however, but still blatant and pathetic.
I love how Cenk has a pile of papers in front of him to help him along, Sam just has a glass of water and the knowledge that Cenk is a buffoon.

Good job Sam Harris.
Eleanor Fitz u look like a racist
Totally agree Eleanor Fitz. This interview had so much more potential.
Eleanor Fitz It seems every time Sam makes a valid point and backs it up with strong evidence, Cenk has to go back to acting as if he's being somehow intolerant or stereotypical, no matter how clear Sam makes it that this isn't the case.

The intellectual distance between these two men is quite astounding.
It's like watching a football player discuss islam with a scholarly person... oh wait...
Watching this discussion made me feel like Cenks mom must be his dads cousin.

Hosting an interview is a sign of intellectual prowess? do you know how dumb that is? something tells me that you would be unable to think your way out of cardboard box.
One of them is trained in philosophy, where one class would teach focus on truth values and how to construct arguments. Frankly, some of the arguments, while valid are not constructive. The goal of those arguments are clearly to illustrate that divide, and ultimately to discredit.
I would never get bored listining to Sam! I love his logic and his way of expressing things!
Cenk is trying so hard to misinterpret what Sam Harris is saying. Is it deliberate dishonesty on Cenk's part, or just his profound ignorance showing?
What you call misinterpret is him being critical?
When he cannot even find common ground on the definition of the basic laws of probability, yes I do think he is misinterpreting.
I don't think it's deliberate, I think there's suggestion shown throughout the video that Cenk is unable to detach his own bias from his viewpoints.
Cenk is just dumb.
Sam: makes valid and reasonable point
Cenk: Completely misunderstands, jumps to conclusions and gets offended -_-
Almost not believable that as Sam explains people in North Korea may need 20 years to get to democracy, Cenk needs to clarify that he isn't saying north koreans are incapable of democracy... It is actually painful.
