@@jacklondon999I would be more interested if S. Harris was more evenhanded and cautioned the Israeli PM not to overreach or listen to the orthodox in Israel. Maybe now that the orthodox have to serve in the army they will be less militant. Evenhandedness wins support; one-sidedness does not. Stay off Christianity; the Church was tasked with keeping the Dark Occult out of the mainstream on the ascent from The Dark Age to the Age of Reason. Harris is clueless about this so until he educates himself, he shouldn’t comment on it. The Cartoonists were stupid; is it the business of the free press to mock anyone’s religion or belief? Even then, he was willing to ignore the depth of history and the layers of obvious resource and geopolitical primacy that underlie the whole Jihad vs McWorld thesis (the foundation of the post soviet reboot of empire/western centric status quo). Jihad was an obscure, irrelevant relic until our heavy handed post OPEC machinations in the oil drenched middle east escalated. We in fact helped create the tiny jihadist mindset through the we'll studied effects correlating US military bases with the same and through our covert (at the time) mobilization of a jihadi ethos in the proxy war of Afghanistan. Here he opens with references to a broken discourse and our inability to agree upon basic facts but can't even pause for a breathe after lamenting censorship to begin asserting that there is a binary (simplistic garbage) and that his facts are the correct ones and the knuckled draggers of the flyover states and the Muslim world are ignorant rubes to a one. It’s Straussian elitism at its finest while enticing we listeners to feel smarter as he artfully reasserts the same lamentably binary frameworks that he cut his teeth on. Covid? Sam is a true modern day philosopher and architect of lucid thought. While I don't agree with everything he believes, his ability to articulate with such a clear depth of insight, and in such an eloquent fashion, is admirable and something this world needs so much more of. Equally his ability to apply that same remarkable skill of clear language toward explaining, in rather simplistic terms, the essentially unexplainable world of the psychedelic (and spiritual!) journey is so fascinating. Social media has caused everyone to think that they are experts in every conceivable topic. Hence, if you don’t agree with the majority or whatnot, that you don’t support them and want to suppress them. You can agree to disagree with people and know it’s not all bad intentions.
Everyone wants to be famous and rich. No one cares about truth since it won't enrich them. As a matter of fact any change that gets you 'likes' is ok since you only wish to get paid.
The channel's description clearly states that RR is exploring the human potential across a spectrum -- mind, body, and spirit. Sam is an influential reasonable figure in at least two of these areas. Thanks for bringing Sam.
Hitchen's commented many years ago that having TWO messianic cults wanting the same space will not likely end well or peacefully. Both sides insist that god is only on their side. Current troubles seem in large part to me to be a result of the Balfour declaration in 1926? I have listened since Golda Mier and Edward Said days to both sides but there seems to be no statesmen today from either side working toward sharing the same space and living in peace so we continue to have death, hatred and war. Thanks much for having Sam Harris on Rich.
This is a lazy reduction of reality. It's not as simple as one religion vs. another. Only one "cult" keeps staring those wars. And flying planes into buildings, or suicide bombing shopping markets, and glorifying the historic and present perpetrators, while publicly preaching hate.
You're oversimplifying. This is not a my-god vs. your-god scenario. If you want to know who the bad guys are, ask yourself which side actually needs weapons to stay alive, and which side could bring peace by dropping their weapons today.
A very interesting discussion. Thank you. I’m interested in the assessment of what is happening in Gaza but feel disappointed in the lack of recognition of the huge loss of life over there, particularly on the Palestinian side.
That was probably the best interview with Sam that I have ever heard, and I have heard quite a few. Most people try to steer him towards more sensationalist topics but you let him talk about meditation. Outstanding!
15:28 Our institutions have repeatedly and consitently proven that they are corrupt and not what's best for most people. They might do what's best for a very few people (hint: the ruling class) under the guise of general welfare but examples of this -- the general good that is -- are vanishingly rare.
This might be increasingly true, however we need to be careful of who tries to exploit these realities for their own gain, i.e. a different faction of ruling class pandering to the population or using distrust to get away with misdeeds.
What an island of sanity, and expert communication this show demonstrated. Made me an instant subscriber. Thank you, and thumbs up. As an avid Alan Watts fan for over 50 years, I was delighted to see I'm far from alone.

I absolutely admire Sam's ability to talk about anything unfiltered. He just speaks what he feels and believes without self-censoring himself. Such an important and honestly necessary characteristic going into these new times.
You can always count on Sam Harris to calmly, and logically dismantly fallacious and absurd claims and then extrapolate on the implications it has on us a society. Best conversation yet.
I kind of enjoy listening to Sam, but I've heard all of this stuff before from him. The real star here is Rich Roll. Rich really shows off his chops by being able to keep pace with Sam in terms of knowledge, eloquence, clarity and balance. Thank you RR!!!!
I've never listened to a full talk by Sam Harris, because his style of speaking although well thought out, seems dry to me. What ideas or thoughts of Sam Harris do you do find most important?
I am not on the left and not an atheist and I find Sam to be one the best mindfulness communicators there is. I could listen to him for countless hours. Great teacher! As for Rich: he is new to me, but he seems like a really good interviewer.
While I agree with Sam on many topics. I am baffled that what he says and sees as Hamas support isn't the issue. Nobody supports Hama! Where is the support for the pawns in the conflict, the Palestinians? These people are held hostage by Hamas and the targets of Isreal and Hamas....it's tragic
Keep it radically and thoroughly simple. Self-awareness reveals thoughts arise without a thinker. Continuing self-awareness realises itself as the consciousness that contains all things, simply because there is no thinker, so there is no world external, nothing outside you. The emergent properties of this realisation are love, bliss, and wisdom. All that is left to do is to maintain self-awareness, acting in complete freedom.
Rich, you are so knowledgeable about the topics and asked such good questions that you provide the space for Sam to go into details on consciousness and non-duality (the ultimate reason behind meditation). Thank you so much!
Fantastic. Thank you so much. Incredible to also be a “follower”, per se, of Sam and listening to a conversation which, if I was a privileged as you, may’ve had with him myself. And now I ALSO have that privilege, to some extent, because of your good work here. Thank you thank you thank you!
There is an answer/solution to the question of what is consciousness. Two epistemological 'puzzle pieces' in the solution are 1) thought is physically made of forces flowing through neural structures that include loops, comparitors, and differencing, and 2) existence is always and exactly now (the duration of every Now is zero). This is why when being in states of flow, the sense of time disappears. After experiencing this, and with practice, one can step into this state by simply choosing to BE. The causal continuum that is the universe is just running. Enjoy the ride.
I really like Sam Harris and agree with him on most of his opinions/logic (including religion at large), but supporting the Palestinian people in their struggle to survive is not the same as supporting Hamas. I’m reluctant to pick a side in that conflict due to my lack of knowledge in the history, but I think a distinction between Palestinian supporters and Hamas supporters should be pretty easy to make. 🤷🏼♂️
The problem is that millions of people around the world decided to vocally condemn Israel immediately after October 7th, BEFORE Israel even retaliated. Think about how insane that is. There is a huge amount of antisemitism happening in the world right now, and unfortunately most of it in the West is coming from college Liberals. The other point to be made is that 60% of Palestinians support Hamas. And 80% support suicide bombings. The distinction between Hamas and Palestinians is not as obvious as you might think.
@@fionadale8044 Possibly, sure. But it may be that they are supporting the people who are generally shooting away from them and not at them. I don’t buy that they are all into supporting a “death cult”. When it comes to survival, I think people do what they think is in their own family’s best interest. I don’t know them personally, but to answer your question, yes I think this is possible.

When it comes to Trump, Sam Harris should debate Victor Davis Hanson.
@@JackSchitt-p9t ok explain…
@@Seekthetruth3000 explain then
@@JackSchitt-p9t I do believe it… instead of saying nothing how about you actually try to prove a point? Or do you actually just have nothing to say?? If you have nothing to say then I recommend shutting the fuck up 👍
Sam is a true modern day philosopher and architect of lucid thought.
I've had many such experiences myself and I can relate so easily with what he's saying about his own experiences with psychedelics.
What a gift to humanity he is.
Sanity. Thanks for having Sam on Rich.
Two of my favourite podcasters together! Thank you Rich, I find this very brave on your side☆
This podcast is a master-class in effective articulation of complex concepts and commentary. Very insightful Rich and Sam.
I like how Rich listens. It's very sincere, and unlike many podcast hosts who just want to join in or lead.
I’ve supported Sam financially through subscriptions for over 15 years and never regretted it. He’s a voice of reason in troubled times and has the courage of his convictions.
Trust in institution, blindly. follow the leader, blindly. He wants puppets to follow him and his friends. The lack of self reflection with Sam is impossible to watch. Listen, I’m wrong many times every day… Sam was wrong once in 1983 and good luck getting him to admit it. Sam sucks and I’m not sure why anyone watches him
Same here, glad Christopher Hitchens lead me to Dr. Dawkins & Sam Harris. Miss Mr. Hitchens immensely.
All Set to dive deep into your conversation with SAM HARRIS, thank you RICH for very RICH PODCAST’S on regular basis 👍❤
Best guest ever, please have Sam back soon
I respect Sam Harris. Well done for having him on Rich. Certainly beats listening to Gisele talk about how it's all about hard work and no luck!
Lol! So true.
Yes, exactly. Thank you 😅. So damn true
@@mizzounycI found Giselle to be very grounded and humble considering... you just hate her because you can't have her

This was one of your best episodes Rich! I enjoyed the conversation and the fact it lasted for such a long time. I appreciate both of you and Sam is absolutely one of the greatest.
Sam is a great human being and thinker, thanks for having him
a racist?
@bellastar464
Discussing ideas that the far left deems too radioactive to be discussed *period* is not the same thing as agreeing with all of the perspectives being discussed, in the same way as me taking out my pocket knife to discuss its features is not the same thing as brandishing it at you despite it being in my hand in both scenarios.
If you think Harris is racist, you give me the impression of someone who could see someone cleaning their nails with that pocket knife in a coffee shop and call the cops about a "man wielding a knife".
You had me at Sam Harris x Rich Roll 🤩
Loved it. Sam is a joy to listen to.
Sam is a perfect example of someone whom I don't agree with at all in general philosophically, pr politically. Yet I have a tremendous amount kf respect for him. As a great mind and an interesting individual. We don't get enough of that anymore.
Sam has the rare ability to hit current issues with a jarring dose of common sense
I agree, but not with covid and Trump.
He's a dumb intellectual.
@@cinemar Think about that for a moment. Do you actually believe that he has one way of thinking on every single topic except the two that you disagree with him on?
yeah, if you think voting for 'biden and friends' again, is the best bet. theres nothing to even talk about here
The best.
Ohh Sam Harris . . . Queuing this one up for the drive to work tomorrow here in Oz.

Is it a 3h drive? haha (hopefully not and you'll listen to it in chunks)
@@CianBrennan It's one hour each way so I'll be listening in slices.
Sam Harris is a sane voice and I admire his courage ❤.I’ve been waiting for this conversation
I love Harris. Have been reading his work since college over a decade or so now. I’ve always admired him and frankly am jealous I’m not this brave or smart❤.
Do not put yourself down. When it comes to Trump, his critical thinking shuts down.
@@Seekthetruth3000 definitely suffers from TDS.
My Host RICH thank you for having sincere conversations with my Host Harris!
What a moment !!!
Thank you both. The last few minutes in which Sam Harris describes the process of being present moment to moment is a gem : experience at its most authentic core.
“A Hopeful Way Forward” would’ve been a perfect title for this episode. (We all already know, very unfortunately, what’s wrong with our world.) Sam’s voice is a critical one in the landscape of superfluous noise in the digital space; so grateful for the both of you.
Hope you noticed the title change!
This is the show I’ve been waiting for. Thanks RR - can’t wait to watch.
Dangg!!!! Rich you have been on streak!!!! Empowering our minds back to back with all these amazing guest & their own unique perspectives!!!! You are definitely leveling it up!!!! Loyal listener to the content you gift us consistently & eloquently!!!! I’m learning full circle & tapping into my own limited beliefs that have been ingrained since I was child!!!! Ommggg love this podcast episode 🙏🔥🔥!!!!
I really appreciate the way Rich approached this interview and I loved the details that Sam went into about the experience of non-dual awareness. 👌
Sam Harris 100% of the time: 🤨
Cursed to always smell what the Rock is cooking.
That must mean you’re jabbed, no heart or cancer problems yet?

I really liked to watch Rich listen in this episode, he's got such a good poise. Really admire his skills 👌🏻
I listen when Sam Harris is talking .
Not me after he called me idiot for not getting kill shit
This is some of the best of Sam Harris.
I agree. He sounds particularly level headed. He tends to lose his patience which I understand but it’s easy to tell he’s in a good, perhaps more stoic place right now. I love it. Gives me faith in the world 😅
I’ve been following Sam for years and I use his Waking Up app daily. No surprises in the content here specifically but it was great to hear you two vibe so well. Thank you 🙏
Edit - the “mummy mummy is that you” pilot scenario made me lol
Social media has caused everyone to think that they are experts in every conceivable topic. Hence, if you don’t agree with the majority or whatnot, that you don’t support them and want to suppress them.
You can agree to disagree with people and know it’s not all bad intentions.
Everyone wants to be famous and rich. No one cares about truth since it won't enrich them. As a matter of fact any change that gets you 'likes' is ok since you only wish to get paid.
@@deanf7061 Yep! Thanks capitalism! Profits over People!
Why did this conversation have to end?! 😩 Loved every word! ❤️
This was a great conversation. I am looking forward to Sam being back on, hopefully very soon!
I cannot thank you enough for doing the heavy lifting in sense making Mr. Harris
"MoMmY mOmMy is that you?!" 😂 ✈️

Shit was genius 😂🤣😂🤣😂
Just what I needed this Monday morning ♥️♥️ Thank you Sam and Rich.
Both of you have helped me so much these last few months.
Now this is a crossover I never would have imagined when I read Sam´s and Rich´s books each years apart, great stuff! Thank you for having Sam on!
That was epic. I’m very familiar with Sam and adding him to your podcast was awesome. Thank you.
Cool guy. Great interview. Thanks Rich❤
Excited for round 2! These topics are all close to my heart!
Sam Harris needs to be widely listened to
enthralling convo. thanks gentlemen!
This is becoming my favorite pod❤
What an island of sanity, and expert communication this show demonstrated. Made me an instant subscriber. Thank you, and thumbs up.
As an avid Alan Watts fan for over 50 years, I was delighted to see I'm far from alone.
This is a great piece of media. I honestly will have to watch this again and write up all the pieces of wisdom, Mr. Roll brilliantly extracted from Sam
Thank you Sam, you keep me sane right now ❤
I kind of enjoy listening to Sam, but I've heard all of this stuff before from him.
Sam is a top notch thinker with reason and rational thinking paramount. Always love to hear from him.
Thank you Sam, very cool!
I agree, Kate.
Thank you, guys. Happiness is a state of mind, not a state of affairs. Let's be happy! 😀😀😀
One of the most revealing and mind-expanding conversations ever on a podcast. Thank you both.
Wonderful. I really like from 1:13...talking about how it's really like any moment. It's so true...any moment can be peaceful/joyful/calm.
Conversation is all we have and long form conversations such as this are key.
My two favorites. Bless you both. Om shanti.
Amazing conversation. Surely a source we will return to more than once for wisdom. Many thanks to Rich and Sam, amazing ♥
Thank you so much for letting him speak. 🙏
my favorite podcast for many years. Thank you Rich!
Why
Best description of non-duality ever!
Fantastic. Thank you so much. Incredible to also be a “follower”, per se, of Sam and listening to a conversation which, if I was a privileged as you, may’ve had with him myself. And now I ALSO have that privilege, to some extent, because of your good work here. Thank you thank you thank you!
Well done dialogue for anyone. The direction y’all aim for can truly help us all.
I dig this comment.
Do you think the Palestinians in Gaza support Hamas?
@@fionadale8044 Possibly, sure. But it may be that they are supporting the people who are generally shooting away from them and not at them. I don’t buy that they are all into supporting a “death cult”. When it comes to survival, I think people do what they think is in their own family’s best interest. I don’t know them personally, but to answer your question, yes I think this is possible.
So let's start with those people not electing hamas and their ideology/agenda to be their leaders, and then we can make the distinction...
@@_bassmentdweller I would suggest you do more research on jihadism.
