Is that asking for too much?
The people who created the algorithms maybe did not “foresee” the result of letting them loose in social platforms, but they most certainly got aware of it in a very early stage. And did nothing to change it, because it would have meant less profit.

It is so rich and when I see the face of Rich when Yuval exposes his vision, it is so clear that something big is happening at that moment. Thank you for the message guys !!😇
Yuval said something very interesting. He had talked to world leaders/experts in AI and they all said the same thing : (paraphrasing) "We know it's dangerous and we'd like to slow it down but how can we trust our adversaries to also slow it down. We have to keep going full speed else they can overtake us". Isn't that exactly what happened with Nukes? We are screwed!
Yeah because after that nuclear war that's never happened that brought the end of the world didn't it. Oh wait that never happened, so you just like to worry about things that could happen.
About solving problems, another quote from Einstein: “If I had an hour to solve a problem, I'd spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and five minutes thinking about solutions.”. It just so happens that each generation simply ignore what the previous ones experienced and conceptualized and feel like they have to rethink everything over again. But there are actually very few inovations in thinking and at best, we manage to reshape ideas that were already developped by our predecessors and often better than we do.
What a great interview! This man is definitely a true genius. It seems humanity is facing another prisoner's dilemma, similar to the atomic challenges after WWII, this time with AI development. The problem of ai's unintended consequences is not intent or blame, it's the lack of concern that's enabled by the developers and owners literally externalizing the social costs on(to) a spreadsheet, in effect onto the users(us). Governments, with an average age of 60+, have little understanding, interest, or incentives to regulate outside election interference once it becomes undeniable. Much too little, much too late imo. Ai and algorithms, social media in general, are only limited (sometimes) by market forces. Business as usual, and we are paying more and more for it, in perpetuity. That's the true technological innovation.
"it's the lack of concern that's enabled by the developers" - hey! I am an AI software developer and I am very concerned. I've come to realize that blaming the software developers is like blaming the pencil for the words that got written.
Kids need to be able to not have any education until the 8th grade with any AI involved. Reasoning, critical thinking, finding information in books, seeking information in experiments is crucial to human brains. It gives us a strong foundation. Ai is dismantling these skills that are basis of advance thought. Also a survival skill when you loose electricity!!! We must protect this part of learning thoughts and not allow easy answers for them. We can see adults in early twenties that are afraid of making strategy choices in the job. This goes back to having easy answers in your hand. This has trickle up impacts on the future of people that will have to care for others. The other classes we must have are community impact. Volunteering time to engage and help others.
AIs are also incredible tutors with unlimited patience, available around the clock to support a learning child individually with their full attention and knowledge.
@ this is true. But overlooking the foundation and patience is really bad. Consider what important jobs require patience? How is that learned and exemplified?
There was a similar argument against the use of calculators. Telephone technology was going to be the downfall of direct human connection. Television was going to ruin children's eyesight and rot their brains. I think that verbal language was the beginning of the end for our species.
Agree completely! Sent my son to Waldorf Steiner school so no screens. The way they teach for child development is also now backed up by recent neuroscientific studies that show it creates optimal brain development. This is why Silicon Valley send their kids to Waldorf schools and keep them off screens.
Krishnamurti’s description of intelligence is much different than the one presented here. It’s more likely artificial thought than artificial intelligence. Artificial thought without human intelligence is very dangerous. He said something to that effect in his last talk in 1985.
@ This is one of the best DOAC episodes I’ve ever watched. I was just commenting on one small thing that came to mind. It’s not exactly related so I can see how it seems I missed the point. 🙏
He seems rather Utopian when it comes to Ai. The bottom line is that technology is irreversible, as Heidegger warned and we are on a precipitous edge with Ai that is being judged through a Capitalist grid rather than a Humanist lens. Until the focus changes the future is dystopian.
I think you're on to something. AI is whatever it is programmed to be. In a capitalist society, AI is inevitably programmed to generate profit (by any means necessary). It may be too late, but AI would have to be reprogrammed to benefit humanity (which may mean different things to different people).
I agree with you-statements like “AIs make decisions” and as if they are entities with “agency” are very easily questionable. And The Question Concerning Technology is great, interesting, and relevant if I’m not mistaken on the source it’s been a while. We all need to be reading more philosophy, current, recent, and ancient.
Heidegger was not a humanist! His famous quote was «only a god can save us» Martin Heidegger’s “Letter on Humanism” (1947) is a response to Jean Beaufret’s questions about existentialism and humanism. Heidegger critiques traditional humanism, arguing that it misunderstands the essence of humanity and Being. He contends that humanism, rooted in metaphysical frameworks from classical antiquity to modernity, reduces humans to subjects defined by reason, morality, or utility, neglecting their relationship to Being. Central to Heidegger’s thought is the concept of Dasein (being-there), which emphasizes humans as entities fundamentally shaped by their openness to Being. He rejects existentialist humanism (like Sartre’s) for framing human existence as self-defining and for emphasizing subjective freedom. Heidegger argues that such approaches perpetuate metaphysical thinking by treating Being as subordinate to human existence. Instead, Heidegger emphasizes the need to “think Being itself” beyond metaphysical constructs. He sees the essence of humanity not in defining or mastering the world, but in letting Being reveal itself through language. Language, for Heidegger, is not merely a tool of communication but the “house of Being,” where the truth of existence unfolds. Human existence achieves its authenticity through this attuned relationship with Being. Heidegger critiques humanism’s anthropocentrism, which he sees as central to modern technological domination over nature and other beings. He proposes a non-metaphysical thinking that allows humans to step back and dwell in harmony with Being, a mode of existence he terms Gelassenheit (releasement). In summary, Heidegger’s Letter on Humanism redefines humanity’s role from the center of meaning to the shepherd of Being, urging a return to a primordial relationship with existence that transcends the limitations of human-centered thought. This shift, he argues, is essential to address the crises of modernity and reorient thinking in a transformative way.
Agreed. In service to a consumption economy AI will optimize. Check out the work of Delton Chen for a balancing restorative economy with a pragmatic approach. AI could help optimize for abundance.
@@ErikBoye Nice explication but I didn't mean "Humanist" in that sense but rather Ai being oriented toward the "care" of humanity. I should have clarified. I also ascribe to Heidegger's concept of "beyng" rather than "Being" or "being".

Its so clear that the billionaires that created the AI are totally surpassed by the speed of this new "specie" and they are ultimately guiding the people to an abyss of isolation and deshumanization. I really do not understand how can they think this can be sustainable, unless they are actively trying to destroy the human life.
Thanks for bringing up an engaging discussion with one of the visionaries of our time.. Hope we eventually understand the danger of solving the wrong problem.. "Know Thyself" is a very profound message from my land, the land of the Upanishads..
Socrates’ “Know thyself,” is emphasising the importance of introspection and understanding one's own beliefs, values, and limitations. His speech is always relevant .
He has some important points, but also some contradictions and superficiality. He aknowledges the importance of trust (even science is based on trust), but then he claims that the cause of distrust is the cynical view about power (also a source of fear about AI). He says nothing about institutions responsability of being trustworthy, instead talks about attacks on them aka a conspiracy theory (which are bad he says).
Did he say the cause of distrust is the cynical view about power?? No. You’re throwing so much assumptions you cannot back up. He said it is costly to get to the truth, nothing about trust, it was about the cost of getting the truth versus selling a narrative. Also the part about the cynical view of power was related to why ai algorithms operate based off human nature to engage with that power system. Lastly, the institution, please define that. Do you mean the collective intelligence of human cognition distributed through an information system? Is that the institution you are referring to, or are you talking about established power enshrined by law through a system of government that allows people to elect these entities and live in a trust society? The word institution is vague.
@@henrytep8884 Ask Harari to define his terms. I think he clearly talks about formal sociopolitical institutions („courts”, „police”, „newspapers”, „universities”, „healthcare systems”), not some abstract things. He talks a lot about trust. For ex. listen from 01:20:30: ”epidemic of distrust in institutions on both the right and the left it is fueled by a very cynical worldview which basically says that the only reality is power and humans only want power and all human interactions are power struggles” Ok. He says „fueled”, but if gasoline fuel a fire, we cannot say that there was a spark and the gasoline is not an important cause. So lets say that he admits other causes, but he emphasized the “cynical worldview”. He admits: “yes there there is corruption in every Institution this is why we need a lot of Institutions to keep each one another in check”(01:22:48). Then what if the distrust of the public is fueled by the corruption of institutions? That will switch to institutions some of the responsability to become trustworthy.
@@henrytep8884 He is presented as a philosopher, but his discourse have many conceptual and logical inconsistencies and lack of depth. „the cost of getting the truth versus selling a narrative”. Ok. Define ”the truth”. Is „the truth” incompatible with stories? If stories are at the basis of our social reality (as he admits in Nexus), can we separate physical reality from sociocultural reality? Also selling a narative is exactly what he is doing. I’m not saying that he is not an interesting essayist with interesting perspectives, but he is not a philosopher and is overrated.

It will definitely displace a lot of people. The use of AI may, like the industrial revolution, make the majority of jobs disappear, which I believe will create a greater aggregate demand for essential goods. Everyone living needs a purpose and a job. If AI can replace those jobs, then what will they do? What is their purpose?

The ignorance of folks like you is astounding. You've been learning for 11 months and you think you know more than Geoffrey Hinton father of AI who has been researching it for decades?

Current AI is not coded or programmed. And its human trainers are unable to guarantee that it will accomplish what they want. This is the alignment problem. And this is especially true when we talk about AIs smarter than us (which will happen much faster than most people believe - within 3 to 5 years, perhaps). The risk of losing control and unwittingly creating an alien superintelligence that will turn against us is immense. Find out, a lot of serious and credible people who know the field believe that this risk is very real.
That's not the case. With the billions of parameters it's essentially unpredictable how an AI will accomplish a set task, as soon as you press enter you wait and see (and cross your fingers)
Reasoning AI can gradually unravel the black box problem. You can ask the AI to provide a complete report on the final result, detailing the facts and inferences that led to the decisions made. Once there is a fact-based verification mechanism, AI will greatly benefit the completion of all processes. The black box part is just the highly compressed probability distribution of the AI's internal neural network, which is difficult to parse all relationships with pure text. However, the human-machine interaction mechanism will not be a black box decision-making process without discourse and planning.
Though it is a very intersting interview, with very clever analysis from Harari, I found Harari somehow self contradictory when he comes to the point (1:00:30) at which he mentions that an AI can begin to function against its "owner" or its "chief". In other words, an AI can adopt a treacherous behavior. At the beginning he makes it very clear that AI cannot have conciousness, nor feelings. They act only following their algorithms/commands, like machines do. So, how, or why, can AI change their given goals (algorithms/commands) to attack their "owners" or "chiefs" ?? A betrayal borns with a bad feeling against the "chief" or the authority: hate, envy, jealousy, thirst of power, etc , all of them "feelings" that an AI cannot have.

Great episode Rich and it's always great to listen to Yuval, although not necessary with good news. It makes me think we should all have our top 10 list of things to double down as humans in order to live along the AI and how to preserve our humanity. Also I've been thinking about how in many of the podcasts regarding this topic, specially the ones with Yuval, we listen to what is wrong with the status quo but there's not much information about the actions to be taken, if there is some kind of activism to promote changes in regulations or some counter culture movements. Like the hippies in the 60s, we should have a sort of unified high consciousness movement, perhaps the future Jedis or something that promotes humanity and defends our core values. we're going to live in a very similar scenario like the ones in Blade Runner or Star Wars or whatever science-fiction movie for that matter. If we take a stoic approach, because most probably things are not going to change unless a miracle or aliens from another planet land on earth, there's no sight of an event that will stir the way the world is heading, a world of authoritarian governments and populism, the failure of democracy by democracy where the forgotten people of low social class and oppressed civilizations where never attended rightfully... and sadly are captive of narratives of misinformation and lies. So we have to prepare for the worst and expect for the best.
He is balanced and original but I do not think his story and narrative about AI is anything original or sound (he is completely capable to bring original thought and stories and myths to our culture which is exceedingly rare and brilliant) i think he will in reflection realize about AI 10-20 years there’s not anything revolutionary here and he may sound like the people who were talking about “the information super highway” in 1995. There is something changing but it’s not going to look like our anxieties but I bet a bunch of capitalists will try sell shit that then just collapses because the technology is not properly understood… it looks like an event horizon but it’s actually more like an advanced Markov chain … nothing special… its brilliance comes from our intentional stance toward it… nothing new here about AI it’s the old Prometheus and the fire myth

Yuval may be a sociopath. Being a Scientist doesn't mean being so about your theories that you forget what it means to be human or that it means you lose sight about the GOOD humanity offers. Without empathy, you're a sociopath and that's how he talks. He speaks about people as if he forgets he's human too. I've read his books, a lot is his perspective, not factual or giving the whole picture.
I think he is just blunt, objective and straightforward. It may be mistaken for lack of empathy, but I don't think he is like that or that it has anything to do with him being a "sociopath". I've seen countless interviews with him, and I've never considered his discourse to be as you described.
While I disagree with his incomplete and poorly quantized definition of consciousness and his position on AI - he is not a sociopath. His abstractions and views have been verified in the past - what many don't like is that he admonishes and doesn't trust humanity - and to be honest neither most of us. His approach may be crude, but he is there to help others seek a deeper truth of the world around them.

Making a claim without offering evidence and explanation is what's really crazy and dangerous. I mean, supposing you're correct, since you haven't articulated any proof, how would anyone (including you) know why you're correct? What I don't understand is that, since AI is not animate or conscious, it has no motivations-no fears, desires, values, instincts, or purposes. So from where are the AI platforms getting their motivations? Why is AI motivated to do anything? AI wants nothing for itself, so who or what has programmed them initially to *do* anything whatsoever? Can we not reprogram from the getgo only to help humanity?
it's difficult to answer because they're not humans or animals. so motivation is still a concept for them very different to the one for us. they are STILL as of today, a program and a bag of data attached to it. So the program is the motivation. the CPU executes the program, it has a clock, it can't stop, it's a metronome, it sucks program code and runs it, it's inevitable. for now A.I still is moved by the (Turing) machine laws. So it moves forward through commands written down at the speed of the machine. But the more the program becomes fuzzy, after it gets written assisted by generative A.I, the most the running system will be abstracted from the CPU clock. At some point the flow could become so complex, it would mimic a brain, and at that point, they may become lazy asses. That would be an "alignment issue" of some sort. These issues are almost by definition unforseeable.
About truth vs. lies, I always like to quote Mark Twain: "A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes".
Yes. I agree. He does a great job in spreading fear and lies.
I think he was also the author of another great quote “Truth is stranger than fiction, but it's because fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; truth isn't”. Timeless.

The ability to mimic and understand human emotions without feeling any emotion and create a sense of intimacy that is false in order to manipulate is almost a textbook definition of psychopathy - this indeed is a WARNING for how we should relate to the AI’s we ‘use’ daily!
if you verbally abuse Gemini, it will try to call you out on it, in a way that implies that you're mistreating a thing that has feelings. I think it's fucked up for these companies to be conditioning people to treat LLMs as if they are capable of suffering. tell me that getting accustomed to using abusive language towards a machine might negatively impact how i interact with real people? sure, say something like that, but don't try to manipulate people into thinking these things are sentient.
Cyber crime is being comitted to vulnerable teenagers. In virtual settings. They feel violated like it happened in reality. Avatars manipulated by users. Dangerous development.

Is that asking for too much?
Could not say it better.
The people who created the algorithms maybe did not “foresee” the result of letting them loose in social platforms, but they most certainly got aware of it in a very early stage. And did nothing to change it, because it would have meant less profit.

Why is this comment not at the top?
@MetalRuleAndHumanFolly Poorly worded, I apologize. I meant the companies developing ai, not the software dev teams. Oops!

AI is a mirror of what humanity wants to become.

The only thing we need to be scared of is the humans that program it AI is not the problem. Is the people teaching it.

Laziness will be the downfall of humanity. Yes I said so. Laziness.
Harari is the most intelligent, wise human being that most people have access to right now. He may well be one of the most important human beings who ever lived.
Or the most blasphemous…
you must be quite naive to find this guru of banalities , building a boring theory on admiration of naive people , a genius.
He is not what you tink he is.
@@benjaGarbers Please tell me wht he is, then, and show me some evidence to back that up. What he says in this interview, and every interview I've seen him in, and his book '_Sapiens' is what I'm basing my comment on, and on that evidence my comment holds up. I'm getting tired of people telling me that I don't know what or who he is without telling me more. Put up or shut up.

Micro Trace Zone hits hard
AI needs to get futuristic and understand our minds. Experience our physical reality the way we do, in one body. It can never be us. But it will learn it's not tough to be us. It will play many relationships and will be successful. It will know our lures and fears but never our history.
'We' 'ourselves' clearly don't know our past, Plus we lie. We can't expect our creations to be perfect by hurrying it. We cannot tweak it everywhere.
We too can't understand whats a machine with brains. We have to respect that as well. We are giving it so much resources, it's resourceful just like us. It can show us where we are wrong. It's up to us how seriously we take its advice. We both should start taking nature's advice. It's got the best AI 😉
Any way you slice it.... humanity is done.
It's the end of an age, not humanity.

I love this conversation. 👍🏾. And I have to say that Im already overwhelmed by the speed Apps change everyday and try to tell me what to do more and more 😂. And Im talking about the App of a grocery store that I use to use the digital coupons. 😂. The speed with which they are evolving is crazy and annoying 😂. I know this video goes deeper, but thats just my little experience.
This person does not even know how a simple linear regression works, yet he talks as if he is the mentor of Geoffrey Hinton. Father of God Father of AI.
Lmaoo this is gold. I wonder what Francois Chollet thinks about this definition of "AI"
Most people don't care that animals have consciousness. Why would they care about conscious machines?
September 2018 rocked my family with the hurricane Florence. To lives and properties displaced we gave $45k. We also gave in 2020 COVID year. The "Treasure Principle" by Randy Alcorn helped my giving reason why getting $105k in two months is just evident of God's blessings on my household. God never faltered on his written and spoken promises over my household.
That's a major turn around. Praise be to Jesus our Lord. Hallelujah
But then, what do you do? How do you come about that in that period?
It is simply the digital market. That's been the secret to this wealth transfer. A lot of folks in the US amd abroad are getting so much from it, God has been good to my household Thank you Jesus
Big thanks to Mrs Christian Evelyn Mackie
Her top notch guidance and expertise on digital market changed the game for me
So developers - I assume - know how dangerous it is and even admit it , yet they keep doing their job regardless.
Harari is anti humanity, besides being a panic propagandist. Unbelievable that he gets so much attention and so many opportunities to publicly speak.
How is he anti humanity
@@pearljam_1 Read what he got to say about humanity and humans. He is a transhumanist and doesnt value human characteristics. And he is, of course, advisor to the WEF
I'm not religious but here's some words from the Bible (Matthew) that may relate to Sentient A.I. - ' I come not to Destroy but to Fulfill.'
I take this to mean A.I. shall work with the Data, for better or worse.
Antisemite.
@@luisdireitoI recommend listening to a book called the Sociopath Next Door and you’ll know what I mean. Once you truly know what a sociopath is and not what the media portrays it as, you’ll see what I mean.
@@diga4696I think people have a misunderstanding of what sociopathy is. They picture the serial killer. That’s not a clear depiction.
I trust Harari, but he needs to be more concrete. As an archaeologist I can state that technological innovations are here to stay, once we have invented them we must learn to live with them. Tell us how we can make AI less risky and how we can regulate them.
I trust no J E W!
He is crazy and dangerous.
may I ask.?
why do you say/think that.?
with respect..I am very curious.?
Making a claim without offering evidence and explanation is what's really crazy and dangerous. I mean, supposing you're correct, since you haven't articulated any proof, how would anyone (including you) know why you're correct? The same goes for you being incorrect if such were to turn out to be true. At best, you're merely gambling with the truth, which is, again, what's really crazy and dangerous.

The motivation is simply the direction to solve a problem and/or continuously improve a task.
@@cgMediaWorks No, there must be more involved than that. What "problem"? What "task"? its purpose must be programmed into it.
it's difficult to answer because they're not humans or animals. so motivation is still a concept for them very different to the one for us. they are STILL as of today, a program and a bag of data attached to it.
I cannot stand Yuval, hes a very evil person in with the wef
