Materials scientist here. It's important to say that "silicone" is about as descriptive as saying "polymer". There is just as much variety in the chemistry of silicones as there is with carbon-backbone polymers. Simple silicones like PDMS have been around forever and are safe enough you can eat them. However, just like some carbon-backbone polymers have been found to degrade into toxic fragments, so could some silicone polymers. On top of this, just like with carbon-backbone polymers, it can be additives that are the cause of toxicity/carcinogenicity. There needs to be more transparency about *which* silicone polymer specifically is being used, and what additives were used in its processing.

Nuovoswiss pdms has a fairly good degradation stability at body ph range (- stomach). But yeah additives and cylic low molecularcweight cylics can make a difference. The challenge here might be hidden in formulation stability and non disclosure of manufacturing practices. Well can be many things. But i am not happy ( as a fellow researcher) how the whole report skipped nuances and facts and went after a big bad chemical company withouth checking with any expert. Thought pdf was supposed to be more balanced story provider. Ah well. Next

labobo not a regular commentator here, not sure how much its worth it. This report is handling difficult topic with little fact and say so approach. so i d suggest its taken down. I left another comment somewhere here but cant find it back...expert chemist or toxicologist would improve it.

I'm a PhD polymer chemist and am in no way trying to defend Dow, but Nicole Daruda needs to check her facts. First, silicone was not invented by Dow. That was Frederic Kipping, a Bitish chemist who worked as a research professor at various European universities. Second, silicone is NOT a pesticide! Dow does use silicone in some of it's pesticide solutions, but the silicone itself is not a pesticide.
Again, not trying to take aways from the message of the video. Just making sure the facts are correct.

    • @newman8r45

Whenever someone says “this chemical is bad because it’s been made by a bad company” or “this chemical is used in pesticides/cleaning supplies/etc” they are not a credible source.
Not to say silicone implants aren’t an issue, only that the information in here by that person is not credible.

    • @speedy01247
      @speedy01247 5 лет назад +17

I agree, the logic is a fallacy, they made this thing and its bad, so therefore this other thing they make is bad. Not saying they are wrong based off of that because that would be me falling for the fallacy fallacy (where you assume someone is wrong cause they used a fallacy in their argument) But when trying to convey a message and wanting to be respected, stay clear of fallacies.
I should note that I am not saying they are wrong about the dangers of breast implants, the evidence is pretty clear based on statistics and other information that part I am fully on board and agree with them being dangerous, just wanting to point out the dangers that came from that one claim as people who for some reason want to defend the people who make these (I never understand why but there are very often people who are willing to do that even if they are the vast minority) will use that fallacy as a point in their argument, just like flat earthers will use the UN symbol as a point in their own argument.

    • @loveandcupcakes100
      @loveandcupcakes100 5 лет назад +5

Uhohhotdog Gaming I agree. Saying something (anything) in pesticides is concerning but vague. There’s been a wave of mass hysteria of the word “chemical” with many people not understanding what a chemical even means. Even less people understand the level of toxicity with some chemicals or if there is any at all. There are harmless household product you can use as pesticides, there are harmless products you can use to sanitize products. However, it is still important to consider and understand what the risks are and we need transparency about that.
What concerns me more about the implants is not technically what they’re made of, though that is a big deal and I’m on the fence with that just because you’re not even supposed to put anything in your breast tissue in the first place let alone a mass amount of silicone. What’s concerning is how your body reacts to the foreign object and that seems to be the root of the problem. Your body has a natural reaction to fight and “spit out” anything that doesn’t belong in your body. That’s what doctors and healthcare providers are leaving out and even misunderstanding.
It’s not talked about and more people need to be educated about it instead of resorting to mass panic when they hear the word “chemical”. They need to ask themselves why that’s concerning and exactly how it can either negatively or not affect the body.

The Jim Jimbo, Nicole Daruda knows what she's talking about. James R. Clary was a young Air Force officer and scientist who designed the spray tank for the C-123 cargo planes that dispensed Agent Orange and other herbicides during the Vietnam War.
Thirteen years after the conflict ended, with serious concerns being raised in Congress about the effects of defoliants on veterans’ health, Clary dropped a startling bombshell: Military scientists had known that herbicides shipped to Vietnam were contaminated with dioxin and had “the potential for damage” to human health.
“However, because the material was to be used on the ‘enemy,’ none of us were overly concerned,” Clary wrote to then-Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D. “We never considered a scenario in which our own personnel would become contaminated with the herbicide.” Agent Orange was produced primarily by the Monsanto Corp. and Dow Chemical. Both companies say the defoliant was made according to strict military specifications. “The government specified the chemical composition of Agent Orange and when, where and how the material was to be used in the field, including application rates,” Monsanto says.
But a 1990 report compiled by Adm. Elmo R. Zumwalt Jr. for the Department of Veterans Affairs that recommended compensation for ailing veterans who’d been exposed to Agent Orange also detailed evidence that Dow Chemical knew as early as 1964 that dioxin was a “byproduct of the manufacturing process” and that the dangers of exposure were clear. That report cited an internal company memo warning that exposure could result in “general organ toxicity,” in addition to “psychopathological” and “other systemic” problems.
In 1965, according to another memo that’s became public in federal court documents, Dow warned Monsanto and other Agent Orange makers that industry “had to resolve the (dioxin) problem before the government found out.” Monsanto and other companies ignored this warning and continued to make Agent Orange with high levels of dioxin. Dow changed its manufacturing process so that its product contained much lower levels of the contaminant. Dow officials later admitted in federal court and in congressional testimony in the 1980s that they didn’t inform the U.S. government about dioxin contamination in Agent Orange until 1969 at the earliest.
Despite these revelations, the federal courts have consistently shielded Dow, Monsanto and other manufacturers from liability because they produced Agent Orange under government contract.
Neither Dow Chemical nor Monsanto responded to email and telephone requests for comment for this article. Both companies have publicly absolved themselves of any responsibility in the matter.
“All historic wartime issues, including the use of Agent Orange, are appropriately a matter of resolution by and among the governments of the United States, Vietnam and the allied forces,” Dow Chemical says on its website. Today, Clary stands by the original concept of Operation Ranch Hand, as the U.S. Air Force defoliation program was known, as a “sound and benign program,” but he regrets that herbicides with high levels of dioxin were used in the war.
“I would like to point out that the science 50 years ago did not indicate the kind of long-term effects of dioxin that we’re seeing today,” he said in an email. “I would like to believe that if we had the science then that we have today that the government would not have used (Agent Orange) with high dioxin content.” www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation-world/world/article24751345.html

@@WRTruthMatters, look not to argue particularly... because obviously Dow and Monsanto were up to their figurative earlobes in f***ed up sh*t.
BUT what you're missing in that historical remark is that "Agent Orange" was originally invented as a means to PROMOTE crops to grow and bear. AND that it was actually successful. It chemically triggers hormones that cause growth BUT it only works like that in very small measured amounts... Too much, and it wipes out the plants very effectively.
I seem to recall this was an MIT thing (but I may be wrong)... AND the formula was STOLEN by the Federal Government while the young biochemist inventor's back was turned (or the paper was in the peer-review stage)... THEN the Federal Government contracted Dow and Monsanto to industrialize the processing and churn out tons of the stuff...
This of course, leads into your history-lesson about the courts, and shielding both corporations, since they were under Federal Contracts at the time... science around it all, irrelevant.
MEANWHILE, the very scientist who invented it originally, took up legal pursuit, and later joined protesters of the war, considering he already WELL understood the consequences of his invention being so grossly mismanaged and having serious reservations about an invention he'd intended to peacefully use to FEED masses being taken up as a weapon of mass destruction... During both Nam and Korea, he was fairly well documented for his activism against the U.S. Government and the War efforts on both accounts.
Now, like I said, both Dow, and Monsanto are up to their figurative ears in f***ed up sh*t. No contest, BUT even the Agent Orange debacle wasn't entirely on them. While it's dubious at best to give moral credibility to a corporate mechanic taking money from the Government for stealing patent-grade information and mass-producing it to make fortunes on the warfare and mass murder involved... It's not all together less than disingenuous to simply and blithely accuse Dow OR Monsanto of being exactly complicit.
What the hell else were they going to do?
Refuse... and another company is going to step up, probably give even less of a damn who gets injured and not only make unreasonable moneys from the government for this murder-chemical, but grow big enough to take market shares away from Dow &/or Monsanto...
...and Dow and Monsanto (for that refusal) can face very real threats of governmental retaliations... sanctions... prosecution... or worse. ;o)

I think it’s more like a time bomb. The mold multiplies continuously inside the implant until it exhausts it’s nutrient supply; then when it pops the high concentrations of mold is released into the body. Depending on the permeability of the silicon, the size of the break and how much scar tissue surrounds (among other things) the implant may determine how quickly it spreads. The kind of mold, the concentration of the mold at the time of rupture and the immune system of the person would determine how severe of a immune reaction the body would have. (I think, Obligatory: not a doctor) It’s equally horrifying nonetheless and I hope that when the FDA is done approving certain implants, reactions will be less frequent or absent.

Hey Phil, MD here. There's a lot of misinformation in this video, whether from you or from the sources you used. I saw misinformation by omission and plain misinformation regarding ALCL. There's no discussion on textured implants, no discussion on ADMs, which essentially makes this video completely biased and motivated by sensationalism. Any foreign body including breast implants will cause an inflammatory reaction in the body. You can have a completely sterile implant but as soon as it's in the body cavity it causes cytokines and immune cells to react. You cannot prevent it. This is not an issue with implants or silicone. Patients who report autoimmune disease are mistaken if they think implants are the cause of their disease. They've already had the genotypic potential to have lupus.. implants did not give them lupus. Autoimmune diseases are not given to you.
Textured implants however are another discussion and recent literature have robust findings that are more significant to the point you are trying to make regarding "dangers" of any foreign bodies as implants.

Some misleading info in this episode. Not sure it's intended on your part Phil, but I would spend a bit more time fact checking. Silicone wasn't used as a pesticide. It was used as a surfactant in RNAi testing. A surfacant simply reduces surface tension between two objects - dish soap is a surfactant. Its purpose is to reduce the surface tension between your dishes and the gunk stuck to them, so it can be wiped away. Regarding pesticides, silicone was mixed with RNAi to allow the RNA molecules to enter air-exchange holes in the plant's surface that disrupted the gene for tolerance to certain herbicides. Silicone itself wasn't used to cause damage to either the plants or the pests. Not even close.

When exploring options with my surgeon, surrounding the mastectomy I was offered a "skin sparing" option that would allow for implants after I was healed. I visited two different plastic surgeons to talk about having implants immediately vs. waiting to be fully healed. Of the THREE doctors I spoke to about implants, not one mentioned the risks associated with them. I see a lot of people bashing women who get implants so I just wanted to say I have no problem with people who get cosmetic surgery, including breast implants. I think cosmetic surgery is only a problem if you’re putting yourself in debt to do it(and the problem itself there isn’t the surgery) or you KNOW it’s becoming a danger to your body and you do it anyway. But this isn’t that! These are women who weren’t thoroughly warned by their doctor so they had no idea these risks were there. Some of those women might have still gone through with it knowing the risk, but most likely wouldn’t. That’s the issue. There are SO many reasons for someone to get cosmetic surgery and I wouldn’t bash someone for wanting to do it.

The implant shells degrade and the implants eventually rupture. A proper explant, depending on where you live in the United States, costs anywhere from $4,000 to $10,000 or more and if you choose to implant again you can add that cost and then start over again. Then there's the concern of possibly developing Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma which is a cancer of the immune system. No one even notices, because some women have small breasts and thats completely normal. You dont have to risk your health to be a woman, even though being maimed or poisoned by a medical procedure is pretty much the most female experience you could have, i don't reccomend it.

They said that silicon implants accounted for 274 cases of BIA but saline implants accounted for 183. But earlier in the video they said that saline implants were used in 12% of surgeries...seems disproportionate and heavily weighted towards saline implants being a larger problem. 40% of cases when a much smaller fraction of women have that type?

@@totallummox64 Yes. Women are perceived as weaker and therefore more likely to exaggerate symptoms, but on average the opposite is true. Since most of us have to endure significant recurring pain and illness symptoms once a month, we're usually more tolerant to illness than men are. There are a lot of memes about how a cold renders men totally useless, but women will keep going even if they're having heart attack symptoms.
Obviously an overexaggeration, but anecdotally I see men derailed by small illness much more than women. Which doesn't mean anything about men, if you're used to feeling healthy 99% of the time, getting sick will always feel much worse to them. As opposed to women, who feel crappy and sick a quarter of the year.

Anecdotally when my sister was a teenager she began to get episodes of agonising back pain. She went back & back to her local drs but they did not seem concerned or believe the severity of her pain. She was also getting frequent UTIs & saw a urologist who actually said out loud "women feel more pain" & alluded to her pain purely being psychological rather than physical. Said Dr also said that women are lazy & my sister should keep moving around & not expect people to be her servent (this in relation to my sister attempting to convey how debilitating the pain is & that during an attack she was unable to do anything & wants a solution to be able to live a normal life- his solution, live a normal life & the pain will go... As if she was choosing to be lazy rather than suffering disabling agony.)
Another Dr in a very nonchalant manner stated my sister will likely just have to live with the pain for the rest of her life, with no answers or relif, then expected her to "feel better" because there was "nothing wrong" as if anxiety was the problem not agony & a physical cause.
Another Dr suggested therapy because she seemed "distressed" yes she, & I, were distressed after years of her pain & being ill yet no investigations or treatment being proposed.
Another Dr suggested CBT to "cope with her symptoms" my sister said if her symptoms were taken seriously investigated & had a know cause or management then she would not need to cope as there would be no medical problem to cope with. The Dr insisted CBT is known to reduce her symptoms "in cases like these" i.e. assuming it is purely psychological problems based on gender & often age!
Idk if there is a secret Dr code but my sister literally walked through the door of some appointments & the Dr started to treat her as a nervous wreck, despite her calm demeanor, & ignoring any physical explanation for her symptoms at all. We have learned that "medically unexplained symptoms" does not mean ignorant Dr or not believing the patient or actually trying to find a physical cause, instead "medically unexplained symptoms" is a way of saying symptoms purely caused by emotional or mental health problems...Often diagnosed with no mental health assessment, no input by a mental health professional & alarmingly often no mental health treatment suggested for the patient.
More doctors blamed exam stress, non existent dating issues, arguing with parents, family problems, working too hard, not working enough, being hormonal etc than any physical examination or listening to the severity of her pain.
I acompanied my sister to one appointment after she was chastised for asking for painkillers. I listened to her explain that she would feel unwell, feel sick, get hot & sweaty & have a very specific agony in her back. She explained the pain was so bad she was unable to do anything & had to leave her classroom & often lie down as she felt faint with the pain. The Dr was incredibly dismissive. After I asked if her urinery tract infections might be related as her pain was in her kidney the Dr literally said "oh no kidney pain is agony, she would be feeling faint & barely able to function if that was her problem"... Literally just stating the very same symptoms my sister described to him! He diagnosed a muscle pain due to her being tall & dismissed her complaint.
Once the pain got so bad that when she went to the emergency for painkillers a Dr thought she was giving birth! Until drs saw my sister in pain thet assumed she was being dramatic, one actually said "wow you are in pain" no shit Sherlock! Did the doc think my sister was making just it up before?!
Drs largely take the stance that patients exadurate their symptoms, particularly women.
...In the end it turned out that my sister had kidney stones that were causing the UTIs. You know kidney stones which are absolutely agony! Her left kidney is now permently scared & has reduced function but thankfully since a long course of strong antibiotics she has been pain free for years.
Her experience was a steep learning curve about the sexist, biased, ignorant attitude of many medical professionals. Not to mention some drs being obviously sexist.
Many drs talked down to my sister, not even looking at her when talking & assuming she just wanted reassurance for her hysteria & then to go in her merry healthy way. Yet when I addressed the Dr their demenour instantly changed, they talked with more respect, looked at me & actually listened. I can't remember what is was but my sister said something & the Dr barely reacted mumbling "I see" when I repeated her exact sentence the Dr took notice & carried in a conversation with me.
It is as if drs simply don't listen & tend to believe all women are lying emotionally unstable people who are unable to experience any physical problem. I remember a Dr (one who only suggested therapy) when I mentioned s kidney problem, said it was "incredibly unlikely" which apparently translated to impossible. My sister wrote that Dr a letter & let him know that she was experiencing kidney stones & to please think about that possibility in the future with other young female patients, his response was incredibly rude & defensive. His reply was basically saying my sister's case was incredibly rare & there was no way he could have known there was physically something wrong with her, especially as all the other young women are hysterical nutballs with purely psychosomatic symptoms. Proving his sexist biases & bring unwilling to chance his idiotic, ignorant view. I do wonder how many other young women are left to suffer purely due to neglected by sexist, dismissive doctors.
(Drs being dismissive & not tackling chronic complaints well is a widespread problem which only seems to be getting worse, heck my dad lost an eye due to poor patient care but that is another story. Women are substantially less belived by all professionals & there is a stereotype that women massively complain about a papercut where as men don't want to see the Dr for a broken leg. When in reality many women's physical problems are inaccurately diagnosed a psychological, while female autism & heart attacks are poorly researched & often cimpletly missed. Not to mention that men's reluctance to seek help & be treated with compassion is only worsening men's depression & suicide rates all over the world.)

Well, nearly 5 million women in the US have had implants added to their bodies and, in the US, a low percentage of women have had negative side effects. It is still a scary thought to realize that up to 20% of all women(world wide) have had negative and even life threatening complications from implants. I would hope that one day we, as humans, will learn to accept ourselves as we are and realize that it's a relatively small percentage of people who are vain enough to judge others solely based upon their physical appearance. It is a personal choice and if something makes a person feel better then that's a positive thing, but personally I suggest a puppy 'cause they make you feel great and they love you just the way you are. ;)
