- In this video I open this cool OTF, Microtech Cypher II to see why the Marfiones decided to implement this drastic design change, screwless construction. Did it buy us anything other than the marketing hype? Will it benefit the knife user?

Nah .. I wouldn't..lol
Absolutely. Tree of doom and more. Run it through the ringer.
Could be fun to see for sure 🙌
Love your reviews - I think if you doom tree one you should doom tree them all …🗡️☠️🗡️…🖌
Done! Link in the pinned comment 👍
Very good channel, nice to see somebody with actual knowledge and interest in technology not just moving around an object and telling absolut subjective toughts. Im tired of the hundreds of "reviewers" who dont share INFORMATION, just telling us how they like something that they will never use. Keep on the good work, greetings from Hungary.
Hi! I have never been to Hungary even though my family has Austro-Hungarian roots being from Post-Carpatian town of Kamenets. What a beautiful country side! Thanks for the compliment and looking forward to your comments and questions!
Just an FYI, that per Microtech those boss screws (4 hidden screws) must NOT ever be tampered with or it will void your warranty. This was brought up on a disassembly video that Microtech made (on new Hera II), as they have a very specific torque spec. Just search for the video on the disassembly of the Combat Troodon / Hera II on Microtech's YT channel. There, while disassembling the Hera II Ray talked about that specifically. 🤠👍
I carry a Chris Reeve Large Inkosi and alternate with a Medford Slim Midi (and have a good collection of Medford and Chris Reeve). About 2 years ago I bought an Ultratech and carry that as a secondary knife - I have several and then purchased this Cypher - blown away by the quality and just bought a natural finish Cypher. I really like what Microtech is doing and I plan to add a last gen Combat Troodon and a Gen III Troodon as soon as the Warhound and Tanto versions come out. I sensed a big uptick in design and execution with the Cypher and really appreciate your take!
American by choice. I subbed immediately after hearing you say that. ❤
Thanks for sharing my passion for our country!
Found your channel while looking for information about the Cypher 2. You mentioned in this video that you hit 5k subs, and now you are over 7k. Congrats and you have gained one more sub from me.
Welcome to the Tribe!
Congratulations on your subscriber milestone 🎉🎉🎉 Thx for all your hard work and helping us consumers 👍
Thanks! Appreciate your support!
Congrats on hitting 5k. Only came across your channel recently but been loving how informative and unbiased your videos are. Also can’t thank you enough for the one regarding making the precision pro sharpener more precise 🙌
Glad I could help! Welcome to the channel!
Your videos are excellent. Not enough knife guys talk design like you.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video! Please help me spread the word: share the link with your friends!
That is just some beautiful design there. I love these deep dives into knife engineering.
Thanks for the compliment!
I have to say sir your content is amazing and very informative keep up the great work! I truly mean that !
I appreciate that!
Good to see that it made the cut!
For sure!
GZ on 5k.. well presented video CBR*
Microtech is killing it lately. Hopefully some of these other US makers will follow their lead and up their game as well. Great video!
Awesome company except I wish the would stick to US production. Also, Ram Loc needs some further development!
I am proud to live in the same town as them(WNC) Tony is one hell of a guy and he has some amazing employees. They work hard, make an amazing product and are proud of their jobs. What more can you ask for
Congratulations on the channel growth! I suspect you will continue to grow. You’ve got some great content that is entertaining and useful. 🇺🇸
Thanks! Appreciate your support and always look forward to your questions and comments!
Congratulations on hitting 5k mark 🎉🎉🎉
Hope to see 50k in a year ❤
Thank you so much 😀
Happy 5K! I am one of your gang!
Thanks for being a subscriber!
Thank you very much! Great channel! You give us very useful and valuable information! Very rare these days 😅
It’s because most “influencers” are trying to make a living off the affiliated links. MC is the biggest. I feel sorry for them because it’s a boring and tedious existence for not a lot of money.
@@CuttingBoardRx I think you meen "metal complex". Dont watch him, not my style... Sorry, but to much screaming... 😅But I very like your style with tests and desire to get to the bottom of things. If I myself were starting a RUclips channel about knives, I would do something similar to you. Thanks again for your work!
@@eugeneBai Yes, do it! Start a channel! We can start an independent knife reviewers consortium! MC works his ass off and there’s a lot of good information on his channel, but it is hard to watch him sometimes. It’s ok, someone has to do this!
5000🎉🎉🎉 congrats man
Thank you for the support!
You got me curious about OTFs. What are your thoughts compared to a classic folder or fixed neck knife ? You lroved they can be solid !
I think OTFs are a decent EDC tools but not ideal for self defense. For the latter, I’d rather have a puukko but I grew up near the Golf of Finland so am biased. From your videos, your Entrenching Shovel is a lot scarier in your hands 😅
@@CuttingBoardRx 🤣
I always carry two MPL-50 in my pockets at all times ! Can't carry too much of those 😆 Kidding but I like a big blade + folding saw
Great knife and great video!
And a great comment, as always 😄
Congratulations! It was well earned!
Thank you so much 😀
Microtech stated those tapered screws are non user serviceable as they are torqued to a specific value and it voids warranty just to let you know
Sure thing. There’s absolutely no situation that I could foresee that would require removal of these screws ever. In fact, other makers of the screw-less OTFs mill these retention bosses straight out of the same block of metal as the handle. I’m going to do a video comparing 3 different knives of this type.
You can be trusted. People that get the knives given to them are beholden.
Thanks! Means a lot to me!
I love hearing you say “I’m an American” damn right man!
Becoming an American by choice is one of my life’s proudest achievements.
@@CuttingBoardRx I wish more people felt that way about being born here man. I’m 23 born and raised here in America and patriotism in my generation feel almost non existent. We need it to come back I feel it’s really hurting the country.
Anyways I just ordered my cypher 2 your video talking about the design Timorese me over the edge into needing one
Thanks for the breakdown of this knife! I am about to buy my first microtech otf and would love your opinion. Which do you think is the best out of the Cypher II, Combat Troodon Gen 3, or the Glykon? This will be an edc knife that will get used.
Great video 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it! More where it came from!
@CuttingBoardRx back for another watch before I head to pick up a Cypher! Keep up the great work
What tool are you using to remove the T screws? Nice video

I really like the new microtech otf's. I'm in the market for a otf. However I was told that microtech runs there metals on the soft side so I've stayed away. What have you found with your testing of micro tech?
I’m very impressed with their OTFs and I was always able to get them screaming sharp. They heat treat the steel for balance between edge retention and toughness, which is the root of all the arguments: some people look at them as EDC and demand edge retention, while others prefer toughness as it’s crucial in the self defense scenarios. I am in the latter camp, because I always carry 2 blades - 2.5-3” EDC and 3.5-4” for other uses.
I saw a comment on another video of some guy complaining that the edge of the blade on the cypher 2 would get dulled by rubbing on the locking gate every time it’s deployed/ retracted. What are your thoughts on that? I doubt microtech would do something like that but wanted to ask your opinion.
Normally I would say he’s mixed up the front and the rear gates (happens on some knives) but it would be impossible on this model. Nor could it be jammed because it sits in a tight pocket. Conclusion: out of tolerance component.
It's the pricing problem that US knife companies will have to conquer. I just bought an Eafengrow EF131 that's unreal for $59. Tops would charge $175 for something similar.
I agree when it comes to Tops, ESEE, and LT Wright: these are overpriced by 30-50%. White River is more deserving because they use more advanced steels and their craftsmanship is a lot higher.
Core Edge USA i think make OTF without screws
I know for sure Templar Knives has had Excalibur model since mid-2023. It’s on their website. Chinese parts, US assembly in North Carolina. Around $200
