First riff I learned to play on the guitar because of my older cousin. He loved Nirvana and that song particularly. Almost every week I used to drop by his home and he was playing it. At some point I asked him to teach me how to play it and he did so. He later became an airplane pilot and sadly died on a tragic plane crash at the age of 24, when his career was just taking off. I still remember him every time I listen to this song.
It’s tragic that he killed himself at that young age. Only God knows what he went through. Bless him. You are still alive in our memories. Gone but not forgotten.
This rehearsal was before Kurt got completely fixed. At this point in the day, he had some alcohol and Valium to help with the opiate withdrawals. It was the only way they could get him to even go on stage and get started. Then, whether they will ever admit it or not, they finally got someone to come by with some heroin after this rehearsal. It's why you can tell he didn't feel right in this video. He still felt incomplete, because he didn't have the opiates in his system yet. Then he went on to give the best performance of his life for this, set in the middle of a cozy funeral esq ambience months before he sadly died. This guy, this band, is legendary and they always will be. Nirvana music will live on as long as human civilization is alive. We had a brief moment to experience something so real and so raw that it couldn't survive very long, but it was documented and recorded so it will ultimately last forever.
