I love Nirvana, but I have always been a bigger Bowie fan (I'm an old... I grew up with Bowie). Except for this song. "No Kurt, you did NOT screw this song up."
Feel like when Kurt sings this song its about self sabotage and regret, when Bowie sings its about a man thinking how he can do better. Both are great in different ways.
I was in high school when I learned of his death. I’ll never forget that day. I arrived at school to at least 100 students holding hands in a circle on the football field crying. I asked someone what was going on and they said Kurt Cobain was dead. I didn’t listen to grunge or most rock in those days but I definitely liked Nirvana. See in those days MTV actually played music videos, so you pretty much got exposed to a lot genres. Watching all those kids stand together having their own moment of silence in unity was very powerful. This cover reminds me of that time. Beautiful and Powerful. 😎

This song takes me nearly 30 years back in time when I lived in Syria and saw this on TV for the first time and was instantly hypnotized only to learn that he had just died. What a minor revelation about a stranger, in his prime, on the other side of the planet that instantly made my heart sink. That is, by far, my favorite among all of his songs because it evokes such a strange mixture of sad and sweet emotions.
I was 10 years old when I heard on the radio Kurt died and ill never forget that day. It was pure shock and heartbreak. He was such a talented musician and I don't think he knew how much of an impact he made in so many of our lives. And then sincerely I was immediately (even before) so amazed. Of by many other bands. Just a thing during my last year studying to get my “baccalauréat » every night before getting sleepy and numb, relaxed, I used to listen to Pink Floyd. So amazing. I was quite brillant in my studies. Was kind of a addiction. To music. (Also to littérature). It opened my mind. So inspiring. Music is still my addiction. Better then anything in this world. Art, kindness. Drugs never touch any kind of this, you will loose everything that you have built by yourself. So forget it. Get passionate into real stuff work on it it is worthy 😊!!!
They're spitting and throwing things at his very expensive camera. There's another version I've seen which includes Narduar's entrance and more "respectful" behavior. Courtney apparently arranged the interview, I don't think the boys were on board. To be fair, Narduar takes shit from everyone. Still, having actually been around at this time, my memory of Kurt is not one of a respectful guy. More irreverent and borderline personality types of shit. Whatever you say, though. I really liked Nirvana back in the day, had all their studio records and a bunch of "bootleg" records. I'm not even mad that he was that way. I just would never characterize his behaviors as respectful. He was trying to shock you.
This performance as authentic as it gets. Love how Kurt slides up to the first note of the solo, finding the note, just fuckin epic. This man just gave an all-time performance on the fly. Also, one of my fav parts is at the end when he says "That was a David Bowie song". Yes it "was", Kurt. Lol

Man, I'm 70 years old but I miss Kurt. I can only imagine what kind of music he'd be playing today. I'm sure it wouldn't be pop-rock or dance music. This is a David Bowie song. You should listen to him doing it, too. Like Jim Morrison, Kurt is probably jamming with the rest of the greats up in heaven.
only that you didnt mention any "great musician"^^ its nice music, i listen to it sometimes to and enjoy it. but i mean i like it, if my children paint pictures for me and i hang them up. it doenst have to be ... hieronymus bosch, monet, van gogh or picasso all the time. in this picture, kurt cobain, jim morrisson and david bowie are the children and for example hiromi uehara, art tatum, miles davis, franz liszt, paganini, beethoven, bach and friends are the picassos of course.
@@wurstfinger3289 Well "great musicians" is a subjective term and people like all kinds of different music. Some people don't like Bach. Doesn't mean he wasn't great. If somebody is really good at what they do I don't care what kind of music it is, I pay attention. Kurt was good at what he did. Musicians don't want to be categorized or stuck in a box of some kind, they want to be free to explore and experiment with new things. That's why I hate it when you're at a concert and some yahoo keeps yelling out for the band to do some old song. It's much more interesting to see where a band is going and what they're creating that's new. The only thing I find it hard to listen to is "dissonance" when the notes are not in harmony in any way. That's just noise. I like everything from "Iko Iko" by the Dixie Cups to "29 Palms" by Robert Plant.

" Kurt was good at what he did." yes. "It's much more interesting to see where a band is going and what they're creating that's new." depends if there was a positive developement, go for it. but in cultural industrialized productions, this is a rarity. "The only thing I find it hard to listen to is "dissonance" when the notes are not in harmony in any way. " thats somehting YOU dont like. go for your 3chordsongs your whole life. great musician of course reach for more. its not my problem if majorities stay in your nutshell the rest of their lifes^^ wont happen to me. @@wurstfinger3289 Like I said, I'm 70 years old and music is my main interest. During my life I have heard so many different kinds of music from all over the world. There was a time during the '50s when some jazz musicians were experimenting with dissonance. The sound was quite chaotic/confused and not really pleasing to the human ear except as a curiosity and it didn't last long. But you can listen to the most intricate jazz and it harmonizes in some fashion no matter how obtusely. So I know the difference between harmony and dissonance. Even in ancient Africa the natives made drums that harmonized. And what is "cultural industrialized productions"?
@@johnallen2771 cultural industry in very short means enlightment as instrument of massdesception. culture in capitalistic societies has to follow the same dictation of capital, as the industrial production. most important is not the cultural aspect but the value-realization. its not about art, its about selling. so the product doesnt have to be cultural valuable, it has to be easy to consume, easy to understand. it has to have nothing challenging, nothing that could make the individual grow with it. it has to be that easy, that after a day of 8-10 hours work, you can just relax and do nothing, while this music is played. actually, you dont even really need to listen. you can do anything else parallel to it. so its not challenging products, its degenerative products. its a term not only usefull for music but also for movies, architecture, ... culture. you can see it everywhere, if you take a closer look. the theroy calls out 2 phases: before that, in the liberal days, art was used for progressive, emancipative, critical action with some impact. it was mostly about resistance. its been about free art and stuff. now, in the late capitalism, the art is not free anymore, because "freedom" doenst necessarily express itself in getting money. "free art" in the very most cases means poor artist. very poor artist. nowadays, art lost a lot of its substance. "under my umbrella ella ella e e e" (rihanna) or eric claptons always the same and not very various guitar"licks" as an example. he s not scofield, joscho stephan or david fiuzcinsky. the impact, that this has on society: the autonomous individual will be replaced by a hetereonomous one. thats what we can see all over the world. the "world of culture" becomes seperated in one very small part of real authentic arts and a big one, produced in an industrial way: mass production of easy things, no complex messages and so on. means: the art doesnt communicate or interact with the individual anymore, because the individual is degraded to a consumer. the topics will be only ... easy stuff, superficialities. cultural industry is massculture, as a weapon of assimilation. its as adorno and horckheimer said: "culture today is infecting everything with sameness".
2:37 the way Pat looks at Kurt, in admiration, like thinking, "dude, you´'re so hard with yourserf, if you only could see you as we see you..., you're doing it so beatiful...."

That he mentions its a David Bowie song makes me respect him so much. So many other artists would not say that, because their record label and managers want everyone to believe the lie.
Would you be able to back that up with examples? I've never seen a cover performed live without a mention. No records contain covers without mentions, unless it is followed by a lawsuit.
David Bowie was very pleased with this cover. Edit: "The " is a written by English - David Bowie. The title track of Bowie's third studio album of the same name, it was released in November 1970 in the US and in April 1971 in the UK by Mercury Records.

I was of school age too, and when I heard the news, I thought, what a tit and got on with the rest of my day!

He was trying to shock you.

only that you didnt mention any "great musician"^^ its nice music, i listen to it sometimes to and enjoy it. but i mean i like it, if my children paint pictures for me and i hang them up. it doenst have to be ... hieronymus bosch, monet, van gogh or picasso all the time.

@@johnallen2771 cultural industry in very short means enlightment as instrument of massdesception.
culture in capitalistic societies has to follow the same dictation of capital, as the industrial production. most important is not the cultural aspect but the value-realization. its not about art, its about selling. so the product doesnt have to be cultural valuable, it has to be easy to consume, easy to understand. it has to have nothing challenging, nothing that could make the individual grow with it.
it has to be that easy, that after a day of 8-10 hours work, you can just relax and do nothing, while this music is played. actually, you dont even really need to listen. you can do anything else parallel to it. so its not challenging products, its degenerative products.
its a term not only usefull for music but also for movies, architecture, ... culture.
you can see it everywhere, if you take a closer look.
the theroy calls out 2 phases:
before that, in the liberal days, art was used for progressive, emancipative, critical action with some impact. it was mostly about resistance. its been about free art and stuff. now, in the late capitalism, the art is not free anymore, because "freedom" doenst necessarily express itself in getting money.
"free art" in the very most cases means poor artist. very poor artist.
nowadays, art lost a lot of its substance. "under my umbrella ella ella e e e" (rihanna) or eric claptons always the same and not very various guitar"licks" as an example.
he s not scofield, joscho stephan or david fiuzcinsky.
the impact, that this has on society: the autonomous individual will be replaced by a hetereonomous one. thats what we can see all over the world.
the "world of culture" becomes seperated in one very small part of real authentic arts and a big one, produced in an industrial way: mass production of easy things, no complex messages and so on.
means: the art doesnt communicate or interact with the individual anymore, because the individual is degraded to a consumer. the topics will be only ... easy stuff, superficialities.
cultural industry is massculture, as a weapon of assimilation.
its as adorno and horckheimer said: "culture today is infecting everything with sameness".

ok, I am a grown adult but this song still sings me to sleep. This is one of my favorite covers, period. So BEAUTIFUL

Thank you Bowie
Look, children. This is when the M in MTV actually meant something.
Ok boomer
I know me and my brother hate MTV now.
It means something today too, “Money”
Look, boomer. Why would MTV show videocplis if there is RUclips?
@@TeacherJason123 look boomer memes ain't funny and because people still watch TV tf
The cello in this song/unplugged performance has infatuated me for 28+ years
can’t believe how long ago this was
Rip
I'm 64 years old and this is one of the best songs I have heard, rest in peace Kurt and David.
I still love the fact that he's sitting in an office swivel chair.
Unplugged, but not uncomfy lol
thiccachu As someone who has back problems myself you’re right. If I was on a stool or a regular chair my back would hurt after a while.
Oh my God he is
Legit didn’t even notice lmao
@@swaggosaurus77 ok correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't he a known hypochondriac and didn't actually have scoliosis he just had some back problems
I love how they have a whole conversation on stage in the beginning
Best notification ever!
Oh John, you're here!!!!!
i never knew you liked nirvana john, i fall asleep to your videos lol
@@yeahsoap5066 I am a very big fan! 😉
John Beckley that’s awesome
Yeah, You copied another comment!
Edit: He copied you, Go to the electric version
No Kurt ,you didn't screw it up but instead made it a classic.. Thank You....
I will never ever tire of this rendition of the song. This stands up with Jimi's All Along The Watchtower as one of the best covers of all time. It's beautiful, and sad, and heartfelt. Pure class
I'll never forget the night he died my senior year of high school. We sat on the rooftop watching the sun rise without Kurt in the world 🌎
Yo... that hits hard
Same me...in Europe, just ended highshool...
who care?
@@azzermasran we care
Damn. Just like that, he’s gone from this earth and life goes on
My favourite song when I was a kid. RIP Kurt. Sadly He really gave everything to his fans, literally everything.
This performance is even more special now, as it’s the only Nirvana songs allowed on RUclips anymore lol that’s crazy af
Today Kurt is 54

This rendition of this song holds a special place in my heart. I played this song for my first recital when I was 15 years old and practiced for months.
I can only think of two or three cases where someone covered a song from an artist the caliber of David Bowie and actually did it better. I love the original but this was a masterpiece in every way.
what are the other two?
Icehouse did a good cover of Heroes.
1. Hey Joe. Hendrix.
2?
@@TheCrusaderRabbits that's a good awnser
Joe cocker- with a little help from my friends
My summer ritual is to listen to this on the first day of summer and then on the last. Happy Solstice from Southern California!
I love how Kurt can make someone else’s song sound like it’s his with his own style. This cover that he did makes me forget that this song was originally a David Bowie song. I can’t imagine being in that crowed. ❤
So glad this account is still active. makes me so happy!
@Damian Wolf How am I self deprecating..? lol I wish.
Such a beautiful song and a great tribute to Bowie. I like Nirvana's version better than the original.
