I remember reading a story where Kurt thought everyone hated his performance the first time he played, because the audience was dead silent after he played. He mistook the silence for apathy when it was actually utter awe.
If I remember this story correctly right after the performance he was riding an elevator with a record company suit and based on the crowd reaction was unsure of what they thought. She told him something like "they think you're Jesus Christ." After a little bit he smiled and nudged her and said "I was pretty fucking good tonight, wasn't I?" I liked that little anecdote. Also apparently MTV wanted them to do an encore and Kurt knew there was no way in hell he could top the Lead Belly cover and refused.
I read somewhere Kurt was disappointed at the end or during this performance because of the crowds reaction and he had to be told that they were literally awe struck and couldn't fathom what they had just witnessed and how people viewed him as this mythic figure even during his lifetime so they didn't know how to react while seeing him in person playing, especially up close like the audience in this performance was, and kurt replied "I was pretty good wasn't I?" His lack of ego is why I respect him so much, he hardly ever acknowledged himself as a good player and never bragged about his fame or talent. Poor dude just wanted to make the music he wanted, the fame was never his goal at all. His lack of ego was also kind of his downfall though, as he eventually grew to see himself as nothing and took his own life because of it... *supposedly*. 1:47 - Make no mistake - it was always his voice. It's so naturally beautiful. Everyone heard their own personal crying in solace and/or screaming out at the night in his voice.
He walked off stage, the MTV producer said "They're cheering for an encore!" .. Kurt said, "There's no way I can top that." and the MTV guy said "You're right." and that was it.
Man you can feel the shivers down your spine when he opened his eyes to take a breath ending the song that came from his heart ached soul. RIP Kurt your a Legend.
Was going to say: so you didn't have shivers the whole way through...but then I looked to see what you meant. Yeah, kinda double decker goose bumps there. I'm not much of a fanboi to anyone but man I wish I could have spent a night talking to him.
This is my favorite Nirvana song. Yes, I know they didn’t write it. Yes, it’s a cover song. But the way he captured the pain. It feels on point. Especially the line, “I shivered the whole night through”, I felt that. I used to be homeless. Yes, it’s not about that. But I know what it’s like to chatter teeth from sundown to sunrise 🥶 because I was forced to live outside. I would play this song when I was literally shivering in the pines
It can absolutely be about that and your struggle. This song can be a beacon for anyone that's lived through any sort of grief or pain in their life and continue to endure. It very much means that to me.
My husband and I grew up homeless in the 90's and this song will reduce us instantly to ugly tears.... it's just too real...we can literally physically remember the pain...Kurt's pain.
That breath at the end, where his eyes open and look almost like he's scared or in pain...that gets me every single time. I was 13 years old when he died, and I still miss the living hell out of this man.
Dear Nirvana RUclips channel, I wanna thank you for giving all of your subscribers a little taste of what it felt like for Nirvana to still be together, today, and everyday, for it makes us feel like we were part of this amazing era. Thank you. We can't express our happiness in any other way. I wish I was at this concert.

I want my daughter and son in law to name their future son Layne after Layne Staley.!! I love that name and I loved AIC and Nirvana. We'll see.....maybe some day. They're thinking about it.
Here I am, listening to it for the thousandth time in my 34 years. This music truly comes from the heart and soul. There is no other explanation. Happy 2024 to everyone.
It’s so cool that this dude is 34 years old and he loves nirvana. My daughter is 25 and she loves nirvana. And her pops is 47 and when I was in middle school grunge music was just starting to gain traction. Nirvana is so fuckn awesome but Alice In Chains is my favorite. Jar of flies Kills it.
I still remember where I was when I heard of his passing. I was 7 years old, standing in my friends kitchen with his mother who had a radio near her and she gasped. I asked her what was wrong and she told me Kurt Cobain died
I work in Aberdeen all the time and I constantly have a connection to his songs. It like I feel his spirit in song when I work out in that area. It's very relatable. I'm an ex drug addict and I totally understand how he felt. Totally separated from normal life. Sad. I'm glad to be alive and to be able to enjoy his music. I'm so happy to be able to fish and enjoy the nature of grays harbor. But I understand how he felt.
My little boy was born to this song on 21.02.24 at 11.03am. It was a planned C Section and I didn’t know you could play a selection of songs. This is Cody’s song. Love forever.❤
My introduction to music as a teenager was through my brothers........both mad Nirvana fans and so naturally i am too, we poured over everything he did, and 25 years later im still doing it. This performance is breath taking.......
Couldn't been said any better.. one of a kind voice. It's very hard to match his voice. I been practicing singing many of his songs for 25 years now. Now I can almost mimec (where did you sleep last night) and many others. About a girl. Most people tell me that they can't tell the difference. Gives me goosebumps when I listen to him. Especially when I sing along to it and master them after training for 25 years
He was literally screaming in pain. The dudes scolleosis made it really painful to wail so when he's wailing he's wailing in pain. Dude was dedicated as he was lazy.
Dude was in pain the entire night. As dramatic as it sounds, even sitting in that chair the way he was hurt him. He still wore that magnetic smile and performed for everyone. He was a good soul.
I'm 44. I discovered Nirvana in 1990 aged about 14. They were my band throughout my teens and I always come back to them still now. I don't listen to them too regularly but when I do, it's like I'm rediscovering them again and how great they were and I'm hooked again and have to binge listen. Kurt was older than me when he died, I was almost 18 but now I'm just about old enough to be his dad. I grow old, Kurt does not, he lives on frozen in time.

We're about the same age, and it was the same for me. They were my #1 band in HS, in the days of great music magazines and MTV. Always had my cassettes and walkman for on the bus and at school. I was devastated when Cobain died. It was a huge loss to a 17 year old. One of those 'always remember where you were' when you heard moments. I couldn't listen to them for years and years after. The tragedy far outweighed the music for so long. Watching this now brings back those HS memories, of being sooooo excited to be able to watch this on cable at my best friend's grandma's house. He still gives me chills. I feel bad for those who never got to experience them in their youth.
That look he gives in his eyes at 4:50 when he becomes the song entirely and belts out that last verse exactly as the lyrics were intended to be sung. Legendary!
This song truly represents what Kurt could do, he poured his heart and soul into this song and that is why it is one of the best performances in history .
Please respect Kurt’s art, he was a true believer 😔 I’ve listened to all his songs and I would wish for the audience to sincerely recognize the talent of this man.. He was 10 years above our era.. long live kurt
that mtv unplugged series were debately the best concerts ever. also because it feels like they were playing from heaven. both cobain and staley died earlier than they should
Depression will do that.. that’s how I always described it. I could be in a room of a thousand people and still feel completely alone. Now the extension of him actually being able to fill a room with a thousand people (understatement) who actually did like him and wanted everything to do with him he still went out the way he did just goes to show how much it warps your brain.
I can’t speak for anyone else but I find when I feel like that it’s because I’m not getting the love from the person I want (could be anyone, parent, partner, friend) feels like everyone just loves the face I put on to seem normal when I’m a storm of emotions on the inside. It helps to reconcile that feeling some how, talk to them, let them go, make new or different attempts to get that from them. Whatever works for you. But sometimes it’s just depression and you have to ride the wave and remember it’s just the low end of the cycle, it’ll get better. It always does eventually.
millions, he was supported by millions of people. Honestly at that point, you realize just how small you are. Not that I've ever been at that level, but regardless of fans, it doesn't matter. All that matters is your internal dialogue, how you feel about yourself.
The only other time I’ve heard something like that is when Elliott Smith did needle in the hay live. The crowd is so loud at the star but he starts playing and you don’t hear anything but him until the song ends.

@@RealAndrewOrtiz Please… I've been singing like that for 28 years. It's an effect you can learn to do that doesn't hurt. I learned how to do it because I was a Nirvana fan in my early teens, and once you get the technique you can sustain it indefinitely. There are literally thousands of bands out there that have singers who can do this and have been doing it for decades.
Nirvana will always be my favorite band hands down. It wasn’t their technical prowess or the fact that they were accomplished musicians, it’s the fact that they had a certain sincerity in their music that no one had ever really seen before. I think that’s why Kurt ended up doing what he did. He felt like he was faking it towards the end and he felt like he was doing more of a disservice to his fans
In 1993, Nirvana came to Rio - Brazil, I was in a hotel lobby with several kids waiting for the band and Kurt appeared, he didn't try to be Cool, Rock Star or any BS. He just sat on the floor and patiently start talking with us ... and there was the guy who changed the Music but who didn't change who he was! That afternoon, I will keep forever in memory!
We did deserve this or it wouldn't have been made you goddamned apologizer. People need to stop saying "we didn't deserve this" whenever something good happens. You have the power of your brain, why bow to your own ignorance?
As LUCKY as the audiences were, they didn't realize how historic and eternal this performance would ended up. To the fortunate people that had Kurt autographed after the show....hopefully kept that masterpiece.
This song always makes me feel so emotional. Especially at the end where you can really hear the emotion in Kurts voice. As well as I just miss him, I wish I could just reach through my screen and just hug him. RIP Kurt it's almost been 3 decades since you left and you're still greatly missed. 😢
@@Jackson-pu7gd True, but even back in the 90's, 6 million today would be worth like 3 million, maybe a little more or less, but close to it, as the U.S. dollar is worth about half of what it was back in 1993. So, either way, Cobain's guitar ended up becoming much more valuable. $500k back then would likely be worth around a little less than 1 million today.

@@Bastolie I'll put it another way. He spoke extremely intelligently in certain interviews. As to whether or not it's very intelligent to f'k yourself up with drugs the way Kurt did. I tend to agree with you that's it's not very intelligent.
It so perfectly encapsulates Kurt's brilliance. I can't think of another video that so perfectly captures the artist at his (musical) peak. The silence at the end is so telling. Everyone was just so blown away they couldn't even speak.
From the Wikipedia entry about the show: "The set ended with a performance of the traditional song "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", following the arrangement of blues musician Lead Belly, whom Cobain described before the song as "his favorite performer ever". After the band finished, Cobain argued with the show's producers, who wanted an encore. Cobain refused because he felt he could not top the performance of that song." I think it's safe to say Kurt was definitely spot on with that.

He opens his eyes as if he has absolutely no idea where he is or how he got there. It’s hauntingly perfect. Kind of like Renton in Trainspotting after Perfect Day has played over his OD and he’s brought round in hospital
This is one of the most haunting, heartbreaking and jaw dropping songs I have ever heard. Kurt’s intonation is impeccable and the pain in his voice is palpable. It wows me every time I hear it but it also breaks my heart. It seems, looking back that his decision to end it all was already more than a seed in his mind but that it has blossomed into a fully formed plan.🥲

This is my favorite Nirvana song. Yes, I know they didn’t write it. Yes, it’s a cover song. But the way he captured the pain. It feels on point.

From the Wikipedia entry about the show:
"The set ended with a performance of the traditional song "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", following the arrangement of blues musician Lead Belly, whom Cobain described before the song as "his favorite performer ever". After the band finished, Cobain argued with the show's producers, who wanted an encore. Cobain refused because he felt he could not top the performance of that song."

My girl, my girl, where will you go
I'm going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
My girl, my girl, don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night
In the pines, in the pines

My girl, my girl, where will you go
I'm going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
The sun, shine
I would shiver the whole night through
Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night? is the best song from the best MTV unplugged performance. I like how the stage is set up like a funeral while he's closing with that haunting song. It's amazing. He's not hiding he feels it's the end for him.
I think he was telling us why did what he did with this whole show but he definitely ended on this song for a reason 🤔
Hello . How are you doing?
Came here to update that Kurt's guitar just sold for a record 6 million dollars. Highest ever. Wow.
$500,000 for Ledbelly's guitar looks like a bargain now! LOL! Kurt's rolling in his grave with the 6 million for one of his guitars!!!
Lol Kurt wouldn't know what to think it's no surprise it sold for that much that guitar is a price of history that I personally don't think it should be owned by anyone

@@smnichols1010 ????
But seriously, imagine what would happen if Kurt actually proceeded to smash the guitar.
We can see the pain in his eyes, those words aren't coming from his mouth but from soul. RIP Kurt, you won't ever be forgotten.
Hi I recommend a song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
Yup... don't have to be a trained vocalist like... amazing singer... pouring heart, soul, and genuine emotion out into the music makes THE BEST songs... ever.
He looked pretty happy here joking around
No, he was just gacked out on some boy. The only thing he’s feeling is good as fuck.
Oh shut up. I bet you treat the average addict musician like crap. People like you are fakes.
30 yes of watching this and just realised how down to earth and gentle Kurt was. Without hesitation he goes into the audience to sign fans merch. Even hands back the pen.
Such a loss 💔
We should care for the careful.
Indeed we should. 🙏💗
Nice 👍
He never wanted to be famous. He didn't get it.
Love that!!! Care for the careful
Always be kind
This was the first song I learned on guitar, and recently, I performed it in my first concert as part of a band project at my college. I will never forget this experience.
Awesome!
@@SaiyanShortsThePhoneAcc thanks bro!
@@Hyonemoto you’re welcome! I’m happy that there are so many nirvana fans and leadbelly fans! I might be able to go to one of your concerts some time if you’re local to my area! I hope you succeed in your career!
The look in Kurt's eyes at 4:50, he left everything on stage that night.
Arguably Nirvana's magnum opus.
Absolutely the best live album.
👍
everytime i saw that look on his face, i read it as "shit what were the lyrics again, oh right"
@@mcneekur000 LOL.
What I wouldn’t have done to be sitting in that room.. :((
Everyone in the crowd was so incredibly blessed to hear him sing live and in such an intimate setting. Rip Kurt

I cannot even imagine what it was like in there!!!
I know. Imagine being there. One of the greatest sets in history. Possibly my favourite album of all time. Just is an album I’ve played over and over for the last 29 years. Went through heroin addiction and methadone addiction for 28 years and just always go back to this album. Not one of those Kurt freaks but appreciate his genius. Vulnerability about him but huge charisma. Good looking fella too but he didn’t even know that. RIP Kurt.
He’s not dead or is he
So cool he signed autographs at the end and everyone was so calm.
They were calm because they had respect. Used to be fairly common.
And YOU'RE so cool for ever noticing and remembering this! :)
I think everyone wasnt sure it was actually over. Usually bands will play an encore and MTV producers were demanding they return to the stage but Kurt said fuck you I can't top that performance.
@@marcc16 It seemed like everyone was in a trance because the final performance was so awesome.
@@jasonhuggins4865 This actually has true logic
You can see the emotion in his eyes. And hear it in his voice.
Kurt's eyes at 4:50 always make me emotional. They are haunting, sad, and beautiful, all conveyed in that one moment. As someone in recovery, I just wish he could have found it too. So much given, but a lot more to share with the world. Lost too soon.
It's an unhuman performance to say the least. The way his face exhauled was deeply haunting.

Can you imagine if this was never recorded. We would have lost a priceless treasure forever.
And not even know it.
I think a lot of magical thing that we just dont know but we cant know it because it never happen i dont know if you understand😂.
Imagine all the good music that will never be recorded like this because of what MTV has turned into. It’s all absolute trash now.

Kurt sang this so good I can’t even put into decent enough words… also he kinda looks like he wants to smash that guitar at 5:34 😂
I love this song so much.
They eyes Kurt gives just before blasting out the last lines is spine tingling.
That broke you like a bullet in your heart ❤ Kurt .. what loose ..
those eyes are haunting. It's like he realized that his life is almost over. That it was one of his last performances.

kurt doesnt need autotune. autotune NEEDS him.
My god, his voice is just so powerful and emotional. Definitely comes from the heart. Like here I am sitting watching this and I'm shaken to the core, head in hands. If I was there I would be floored, speechless. And the moment he briefly opened his eyes sent chills down my spine. He really was one in a billion. He's forever infinite spiritually connected to you. This kind of music only comes from another dimension. I'm crying
@@petew4779 Me too!
he looked so sad 😢
That man could steal your soul with a guitar and a microphone.
he already has.
He did
Done
I doubt he needed either

You can feel Kurt is putting his soul into this song, what a magnificent performance. We will never see another Kurt Cobain... ever, once in a lifetime.
he is expressing the passion Leadbelly's music triggers in him.
Well said my friend
Donnno bout him pitting his soul into the song, but i can tell he is on the H come down at the beginning of the song, backed by him saying "fk you all this is the last song" ;)
IMO All My Loving - was the MOST amazing recording of Kurt. It was up on YT for a year or 2. Now It is tough to find... he sang it in the morning by the back porch - on mic - and I think accompanying guitar... acoustic...
Agree
This whole concert was incredible (now go look that word up and reappreciate it's use). Then, there's this performance - it still makes the hairs on my neck stand on their very end, no matter how many times i've listened. Thank you.....miss you.
I love how he signs autographs for some fans at the end, most performers wouldn’t take the time to do that. I always thought that was really sweet of him.
I love how chill and respectful his fans are. Today everyone would be crawling over one another. He promoted respect and tried to be kind which mirrored in fans. Unlike most musicians of today, its all just fake optics.
