it’s beautiful that this song was originally sang by a young man who was searching for himself that was just beginning life, and was then covered by a man at the end of his life looking back at his accomplishments and wishing he could go back. truly beautiful, and truly one of the greatest covers of a song ever.
What tops it all off is Trent gave Johnny the song. Not because it was Johnny Cash, because he put more power to the words he written. A rare instance of giving back the torch so he could burn that much brighter.
@@uncleseamus4289 "Reznor was initially unsure about Cash covering his song, fearing that it would be “gimmicky”, and he was not blown away when he first heard Cash’s version. But when he saw the video, this changed. With “tears welling, silence, goosebumps”, he recognised its significance. Reznor’s “valentine to the sufferer” at that point became Cash’s swan song. After watching it, Reznor said: “That song isn’t mine any more.” ---The Financial Times
Trent wrote this song from the perspective of a young man battling to keep control of his life over his drug addiction. Johnny sung this song from the perspective of an old man who has battled his whole life with drug addiction, and the mountain of pain/guilt/regret it's caused. I like both perspectives of the same painful struggle, but God this version makes me cry.
Never did drugs or even a little drop of alcohol. From my14 years until nowadays i kept smoking regular cigarettes. My addiction never caused no harm except to me. But this song always reminds me about things that i`ve done and i`m not proud about them . Unecessary revenges, lies , swindles in which i played a role. Most of times, it was just to survive, specially in my job, but not only in it. One way or another it was always to survive, but i wasn`t as brave AS i could be.
@Bloodyrebel I just found this song and have listened to both versions. i think I relate more to Johnny's take - because at my age I'm closer to the end than the beginning. I still struggle to deal with the "pain/guilt/regret" stuff while trying to remember the good stuff I've done in my life. But Johnny Cash's take on this song is a gut punching make me bawl like a baby masterpiece. Anyone, whether or not they have substance issues, who listens to this piece and is not moved to some self reflection is not human.
Reznor's version is a young man battling self-destructive tendencies. Cash's version is an old man near the end of his life, looking back on past regrets.

The state it was in was what inspired the direction of the video, and little things, like the moment when June is on the stairs looking down at Johnny, that wasn't planned either, but all works perfect. The saddest part for me is :"everyone I know, goes away, in the end." My grandfather said once something similar to me, and this makes me scared of being old.
The sadness I've always thought of, is that people cannot possibly live long enough to see the true depth of their works. I don't always care for his music, but this song just gets me. And as long as the song exists, it will touch people. Maybe he DID get to start again. He died as a man, and was reborn in the spirit of his music.
His wife, June Carter, that we can see in the video, died a couple of months after the video was filmed. Johnny Cash died 4 months after her. This video is an epitaph.
He recorded 60 more songs after this. He knew June Carter was on her way out and recorded this song. He knew when she died he would die soon after, so in a way he was saying goodbye for the both of them, while she was still alive. She told him to continue working after she died and he recorded 60 more songs in the next 4 months than died from diabetes complications. You can argue I am wrong, but I believe Cash just didn't take his insulin and gave up. After June died, all he had left was the music and I guess those 60 songs represented the last of what he wanted to say.
Source? Not doubting you but I've always thought that this was just him coming to conclusions that he doesn't have long left on earth so he wanted to make one last song *"beneath the stains of time"* sings to me that he knows he's on his way out but I didn't know if this was genuinely a goodbye or not 😢

it’s beautiful that this song was originally sang by a young man who was searching for himself that was just beginning life, and was then covered by a man at the end of his life looking back at his accomplishments and wishing he could go back. truly beautiful, and truly one of the greatest covers of a song ever.
Same can be said of his cover of "In My Life"
And realized it was all "dirt."
What tops it all off is Trent gave Johnny the song. Not because it was Johnny Cash, because he put more power to the words he written. A rare instance of giving back the torch so he could burn that much brighter.

"Reznor was initially unsure about Cash covering his song, fearing that it would be “gimmicky”, and he was not blown away when he first heard Cash’s version. But when he saw the video, this changed. With “tears welling, silence, goosebumps”, he recognised its significance.
Reznor’s “valentine to the sufferer” at that point became Cash’s swan song. After watching it, Reznor said: “That song isn’t mine any more.”

The way June Carter gazes at her husband. It’s such a look of love, admiration, and sadness.
She would pass away 3 months later, and him, 7 months.
I think that was pretty much what did it for Johnny.
Both performed this song with death knocking on the door.

Reznor's version is a young man battling self-destructive tendencies.

pain is the only thing that's real... great song, great times . good day
My grandfather is dying this weekend and he was a mean, ornery old man who was hard to be around and I was one of the few who could put up with him. Last I saw him he was in a bed, helpless and unaware of the world. It hurt to see him like that. This song makes me think of him.
oh sorry about that i can you are real man.the song is one of the best

Just so you know, he wanted ONLY the best in his life, your family and you!
You know, this song to me, is a memory of how I almost wanted to take my life, but I still remember about life, the journey, and the future that awaits for me and everyone here. If you are hurting like I did, which included this year for me, it's okay. It's okay to not be okay. Just know that you are worth everything in life than you don't think. I still struggle sometimes, remembering my deep regrets, but it's life. This song...is special to me man, and I thank you Johnny Cash, for the music and joy you brought, especially for me with this song. It really hits home for me mentally.
We can’t just pretend this isn’t the most heartbreaking, gut-wrenching song ever recorded. One of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Long live the Man in Black.
Don't forget to thank Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails for writing it.
I must have heard this over 100 times and each time it leaves me a blubbering wreck. Trent Reznor wrote a lyrical masterpiece. Johnny Cash made it his own. No other voice has ever conveyed pure agony like the man in black. Can't type anymore, crying too hard.
@@saraleaward7899 Exactly. I must admit I do like this version better than Nine Inch Nails original version, even though it was written and recorded by Trent Reznor and I'm a huge NIN fan, but Johnny Cash did a raw and powerful version of this song and made it an absolute masterpiece Respect, and R.I.P. gone but never forgotten.

and to think he didn't want to do this song originally i am so glad he managed to do it and see himself back on top one last time before he went away (not to mention the execution is brilliant)
The most powerful rendition of this song. Anybody who’s been in the music industry understands this
He wasn't unhappy, He enjoyed life. His wife was his everything, and when she passed he lost everything that was truly real.
rip we all loved him
Except his pain lmao
My grandfather said he liked cash's music but not what he did. Because cash divorced his first wife and gave himself to drugs, I think. But may God rest both their souls. They're both in the other place now.
@@prayunceasingly2029 from what I read in the Johnny cash museum was that his first wife left him because she couldn’t put up with his lifestyle as he had fallen into drugs. But June helped him recover from his addiction and that’s when he gave himself to God. I think that’s a true testament of no matter how bad you might think you are, there is always hope. That is why I love him, because he portrays real life, and how you can overcome those drug addictions and become a better person!

Good points! Have a great day.
“What have I become? My sweetest friend.” This song hits so hard
Explain plz???
Nine Inch Nails song- Johnny covered it...and Cash's is better!
@johnboi6916 Maybe Trent Reznor (NIN) was referring to a specific person in his life. (Originally written and performed by Nine Inch Nails.) Their video is super creepy to the point it could give some people nightmares...so- in response to the comments above mine- yes. It sounds very profound coming from Johnny. And maybe that was his take on his own life.

Then take away the "rip" from your last comment
i like the line "you can have it all, my empire of dirt." Its shows no matter how much material wealth you acquire, it doesn't mean anything at the end of your life.
But with material wealth, cheese!
But it does; to the people (family) you leave behind. Medical bills, funeral costs debt just as examples. I recently had to bury my mother. It cost my wife and I a little over $10,000. My mother was not great at managing her finances.
Very inspiring
@@kevinmarshall808 I think they meant, “you can’t take anything with you when you die.” type of thing. No matter how much money or possessions you claimed while living, when you die everything that was holding you to this earth disappears like vapor.

I think .... that his pain was/is real .... and the "way", he expresses it through this Song goes deep in people hearts, who felt or feel that pain. The Artist, is all about expression. A good Artist is able to express his subjective reality to the people, so that their reality gets shaped by the Artist. Or shorter: Johnny Cash is a Legend !

This was quite literally Cash's final farewell song to the world. It was filmed in February 2003. His wife, June Cash (seen in the video at 2:34), died 3 months after this video was made in May 2003. Cash died just 4 months after his wife at the same hospital as his wife in September 12, 2003. At the time of this filming, Johnny Cash and his wife were both experiencing serious health problems. He surely spent a lot of time reflecting on his life and mortality during these painful times.
Santo Diego where do you see that he calls him a Hero?!
@Santo Diego let he among us without sin be the first to condemn
2:05 “I cannot repair” he turns his head to show his face that still droops from a stroke. He sits in front of a table of rotting food. He had autonomic neuropathy which means causes the stomach to severely delay emptying among other symptoms. This video is such an amazing use of visual metaphor
@Santo Diegothey didn't mention anything of him being a hero, they were just sharing a sad fact about the video
Santo Diego Yeah. When he was like 20, and than he dropped drugs and got married in. 1968 and lived married to June for like 33 years
I honestly think Johnny knew his time was coming to an end soon when he agreed to do a cover of this song. So much of him is in it. Raw emotion, longing, regret, and yes, hurt.
Whenever I need to feel sad (and yes, sometimes you need to, it's a healthy emotion) I listen to this song. Strangely, it also makes me feel better to know that someone else looked back over their life and acknowledged the roads both taken and not taken and the regret that causes.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Cash. You are sorely missed. I sincerely hope that you are in a better, happier place with June. 😢
