  • In a 2006 SNF game, Al Michaels has a few funny moments behind the mic. The first part is a brief rant after halftime about the use of pyrotechnics in enclosed (or semi-enclosed, in Texas Stadium's case) stadiums and arenas. I'm not sure whether he said something about it during halftime, though. In the second part (at about 1:00, he and John Madden are confused as to how the officials know the exact spot of the ball after a dead-ball penalty. This is explained after the 3:00 mark.

    Al Michaels is one of the only announcers working today who I will watch an event just because he is announcing it. That said, he has some games where he seems to be in an especially bad mood like this one.
    BTW - if you want to hear another of his rants on pyrotechnics in arenas, watch the closing moments of the 2004 NBA Finals Game 5. As the clock expires, instead of proclaiming the Pistons the NBA champions, he gets distracted by some fireworks and starts going off on pyrotechnics. And then is like "oh, and the Pistons win the title."

    • @TheLocalLt
      @TheLocalLt 6 лет назад +6

      walterlv01 because Al is the type of announcer that's observational, not storyline based. Some (like Boomer Esiason, who famously quit ESPN/ABC because of Michaels after only 2 years) consider it to be egocentric and take away from the game storylines, where the game tends to become a running commentary of Al's thoughts. I like it though, mostly because I'm wired like Al, I tend to make blunt observations about what I'm seeing regardless of their harshness. Al tends to do this more when he is disinterested in the event itself. The 2004 NBA Finals was boring and got some of the worst ratings in NBA history, and this game here was a blowout early.

    My all time favorite line from an NFL game: Mike Patrick calling a 2002 Vikings-Seahawks games, in which the Seahawks finished the first half by scoring four touchdowns in one minute and forty-seven seconds.
    Yes, you did read that correctly.
    The Vikings finally mercifully got to halftime, and when the broadcast started with the second half, Patrick said, "If you're just joining us, the Seattle Seahawks won the toss, and elected to kick the bejeezus out of the Minnesota Vikings!"

    It's an easy call for a Down Judge in the NFL. Every set of chains in the NFL has a 5-yard mark labeled on the chains. The play started either more than 5-yards or less than 5-yards. That play apparently started 3 inches longer than 5 yards from the line-to-gain (or first down). Incredibly simple explanation. Every set of chains from high school football through the NFL has that 5-yard mark on their chains.
