“I think.. If you come back in another life, I’d like to be either a blimp or a seagull”
-John Madden
😂
Whenever you see a seagull say hi to John.
Next time I see a blimp, I'll think of John Madden :)
That will be the biggest seagull ever recorded.
I never realized Madden was so deep
John Madden is everything that football was all about. His personality, his analysis, his use of the telestrator and his sense of humor is something that we’ll miss
@Sports311 he is the main reason I grew up liking football and grew up playing his madden video games and the reason many players grew up loving the game
He made football interesting and entertaining to non-football fans.
@@patrickstogsdill74 A
@@patrickstogsdill74 That's what his detractors(The few trolls on Social Media) don't understand. He was the guy we all saw every Sunday. Long before we had Fantasy Football, Computers/Phones with up to the second updates and RedZone TV, before there were regular games on Thursday and Saturdays etc... He WAS the guy. His love for football was contagious. Me and my friends would watch, halftime came, we'd get excited and head out to play. By 3rd Qt, we were back inside enjoying the game and watching John do his thing. He was a football Mr. Rodgers. Add in the Video Games... Forget it... John Madden epitomized NFL Football.
Madden was the GOAT.
“Don’t worry about the horse being blind, just load the wagon.” Legendary
that's idiotic
@@Malvictis Is it though? What he is essentially saying is that even when the situation isn't the best, you can still try to get things done. Which isn't idiotic.
@@chickendoodles3566 I actually get Madden on that level when he would talk. He had a way of explaining things in ways that made complete sense even when it didn't sound like it.
@Malus Ferox I'd say more outright _dangerous_ than merely idiotic, tbh...
@@Malvictis No it's not, idiots wouldn't understand
Emigrated to the US from Sweden in ‘91. Never saw a football game before I got here. By the end of that first season/year ‘92, I knew all the rules and all the players after watching every Sunday on TV. All because of this guy, John Madden.
Do you like gridiron football because of him now?
The man added a lot to the game.
And and and and that’s what that’s all about
It doesn't matter if you know the rules today. Zebras do a great job of screwing games.
Thank you for becoming a part of Americas once great fabric.
Cheers,
John. T.
Madden was a incredible man he could announce in a way that would make everyone understand football
Even me ...
What you have to do is get the football into the end zone
@@rizdalegend lmfao
"They have no idea who we are, where we are, where we're coming from, or who we're throwing to!"
Have you seen his VHS tape, "Boom! Bang! Whap! Doink!"?
RIP John Madden. He’s living happily as a blimp or seagull now.
2:52 "That's the camera. That's the thing you take the pictures with." Madden wasn't just commentating, he was teaching us.
LMFAO
That's what a camera is for? We're glad Madden was here to tell us these things. *snaps a photograph*
Mind-blowing stat about Madden I didn't realize until recently: he coached against 9 other HoF head coaches and had a winning record against every single one of them! 36-16 all time against HoF head coaches. He was a football genius yet made the game seem so simple and accessible with his analysis.
that made him even more of a genius. If you can explain your knowledge to any person and they can understand you, you made it
He also hated flying. He had a bus that took him to each game he announced.
@@samuelhowie4543 he was also married
@@samuelhowie4543 I heard the bus is now in Canton as well.
he also has the highest winning percentage of any coach with over 100 wins.
8:20 "This guy is a very good coach". Madden was prophetic and wise af.
💍 yup
“I’d like to be a blimp or a seagull in another life” Never will such words be uttered by another announcer and sound normal
John Madden was not only an incredibly talented coach but also a hilarious and endearing individual. That doesn’t come often in this business, losing him really put a damper on all of sports.
fly: that was about the only thing John Madden couldn't do.
How right you are, love John Madden.
What I wouldn't give to hear a modern day Eagles vs Cowboys game with him and Pat Summerall. Rest easy, John.
I know
Or any game! There will never be another duo like them.
Bro, I must've watched the Eagles/Cowboys game from 1995 in the infamous 4th & 1 debacle over 50xs JUST to hear Pat & John's commentary... Jesus Christ I miss that sound. That's my childhood 💔 R.I.P. Coach & R.I.P. Pat 🙏😇
Me a Rams Vs 49ers
Man I was just thinking the same thing Pat summerall was the perfect sidekick, the two best to ever do it in my opinion.
John madden is one of the rare people that were too pure for this world. He had no evil and no ulterior motives. Just pure football.
Everyone can learn something from him
Today he taught me that shoestring is just industrial sized thread. RIP John
You're aware of what team he coached right?
Considering he coached the Raiders its pretty remarkable how nice he is.
How long did you know him? It’s good his friends like you continue to spread personal stories about him.
@@I_like_turtles_67, maybe he chilled a bit with age. I don’t see how you can be chill while coaching the RAIDERS. 😂😂😂
13 mins of sound bites is not enough, just hearing his calls makes me miss that whole era of football (at least the part that I watched). What a legend.
Aikman and Romo every Sunday doing color commentary can't compare
Loved how he also focused on the battles in the trenches - keying in on offensive and defensive linemen and giving them their just recognition while celebrating smashmouth football.
True! Met a former NFL player 13 years in the league told me that. "You need a top QB, you need key players. But down after down, yard after yard, games are won and lost in the trenches." he said. Madden would agree.
He talked about that more than Superstar players. And he Coached Superstar players in the super bowl
Because he understood that’s where games are won
Madden himself was a lineman, so he knew well how important the trenches are.
R.I.P. John Madden.
A genius NFL coach and true gentleman.
Genius Coach!
Pat Summerall was my hero, putting up with John's terrible commentary!
Kevin Harlan should have called many of those games, just to give Pat a break 🙄
@@northcackalacky4694 You're in the minority with that opinion. Hope you know that.
@@northcackalacky4694 OK, Kevin, give it a rest. You lost.
Rest in aeiou
"See, here's the water right here" (proceeds to circle the water).
Thanks John. Glad you clarified where the water was. Otherwise we would have never found it.
LOL, I grew up watching this guy and he was hilarious.
My favorite comment of all time by John Madden was the baby bucket thing. Who else would have thought of that?
The fact is, we all wanted Madden to show us where the water was.
@@krankrocker That is true.
Madden and Summerall were the absolute in broadcast excellence. I couldn't imagine Madden being as good with anyone else, and that includes Vin Scully and Al Michaels. They brought the best every week, every season, and I'm glad we get to relive these special moments.
Friendship was the key. John called games with Vin Scully, Al Michaels and Verne Lundquist. Three all pros of their trade. The friendship made Summerall an all Madden in his field
not sure, i think the al michaels combo is pretty good.
John doesn't want to be a blimp pilot. He actually wants to BE a blimp!
Lol! I love this guy!
John Madden was so hilarious. When the jets flew low, his reaction is priceless🤣🤣🤣🤣
Never has someone that knew so much, managed to sound at times like they knew so little
Always loved John Madden, the best to ever do it
John & Pat were the voices of Football Sunday. RIP
Madden wholesomely reacting to the Blue Angels and other planes flying, and to the dogs on the sidelines, man what i would do to be the other commentator being blessed with having a charismatic moment on air with John Madden.
John Madden is forever a legend of the NFL, a great taste in football and food. RIP…
At Least I Still Like All Of His Madden NFL Games.
@@tyreepowell8367 My brother used to play his video games in the 2000’s. As a kid, no Christmas was complete without the latest edition of NBA Live or Madden Football
People talk about his knowledge for the game his success he had as a coach and all that, but many people forget that he was the best and funniest football person PERIOD. RIP John. 🙏
Today's NFL is not worthy of him.
one of the most iconic characters in the history of the game. rip coach❤️
I was at a Giants game in 1985, by the player gates looking for autographs when there was Madden in all his glory. A 5 year old bolted from his dad (prodded to do so I'm sure) and ran towards Madden laughing, and Madden stopped to greet the kid. The kid tripped and fell prompting a "BOOM" from Madden to the delight of the crowd. Kid didn't cry, Madden signed the kids' football and has a moment to remember forever. What a great moment from an NFL legend.
He was my entire football experience growing up. As an 80s kid I got to enjoy Madden every Sunday and sometimes Mondays. He taught me so much about the game as a kid. His passing is the end of an era! John, thank you for making my Sundays so fun for teaching this dad less kid the fundamentals of the game I loved while also making me laugh!! You lifted an entire nation's spirits every sunday!! R.I.P. John...thanks for the memories!!
My favorite day of the week used to be Fridays as a kid. Now that I’m older, my favorite day is Sunday
"This guy is a very good coach" Man predicted Bill Belichecks dominance
9:53 The single hardest throw that I've ever seen in the history of football.
Madden was the perfect commentator for the beer guzzling NFL fan. He kept it at a level you could understand and relate to after a 6 pack.
I love how at 3:14 he does a breakdown on how the field gets its water from the pond
NFL broadcasts are not the same without John Madden. RIP John, thanks for the memorable entertaining play calls.
This is amazing. My dad couldn't stand Madden, but I couldn't get enough.
How can one not love madden
@@Ripndip_30 - My dad didn't like John's ramblings and, incorrectly, felt that Madden would constantly crown player after play as the best to ever had done something multiple times a game in every game. That along with the constant commercials for beers, Ace Hardware, Tinactin, Outback Steakhouse, and whatever else he peddled meant Madden was on the TV all the time and he just sick of it.
John and Pat were THE greatest announcer duo. I will always have nothing but the fondest of memories watching REAL football as kid and teenager with these two announcing. RIP both John and Pat.
There’s so many of them I particularly like the Nate Newton stuff he made that dude a freaking star lol rest in peace Coach
Pat Summerall and John Madden were the highlight of my Sunday's growing up. They were the equivalent of comfort food.
Yes thank you NFL Throwback for doing this!! May he Rest In Peace ☮️ 🪦✌️
This is the All Madden achievement by NFL Throwback.
This guy was full of such life and passion. Clearly one of a kind and a big loss
The chemistry Madden and Summerall had together was incredible and is what made them the best broadcasting duo in the business. They were both very knowledgeable about the game and combined that with a warmth and humor that came through the television. They are both sorely missed.
"See this here? That's the camera. That's the thing you take the pictures with" 😂
Knew you guys would do this :)
Madden is the greatest analyst in NFL history and I was listening to the Marchand and Ourand and at the tail end they speculated that Madden is on the Mt. Rushmore of media personalities who've contributed to the popularity of the NFL. Madden completely changed the way in-game analysts cover the game. He was the first that really looked at line play and how it contributes to the outcome of the game. He was also one of the very first to really get into the strategy and dynamics of the game.
I love that you picked a lot of Madden's more off the wall stuff. That's one of the things I loved best about Madden. He and Summerall could talk about some totally random shit and it'd be entertaining as hell but then they'd right back on to the real reason they're there: The Game.
I know a ton of people love Romo as an analyst but while he's talented as hell and has brought his own style to broadcasting he's still a long way from Madden IMO.
Excellent points. MADDEN was an innovator. His strategic breakdown in game was revolutionary, the use of the illustrator included. In my opinion, Romo tries to be as quirky as MADDEN, and he comes off as corny more often than not. John can’t be duplicated. One day we’ll get someone that’s not superficial that may remind us of him, but no one will be close enough.
@@SpiritMover314 Agreed totally. I don't think the telestrator was EXPLICITLY created for Madden but it was definitely used so much by him that the association is clearly there.
You're right about Romo, the one thing he has going for him right now is that he and Nantz already have the friendship going for them whereas it took Pat and John a couple years to be 100% open on mic. They got along from the start but it didn't manifest itself completely on air til about '83 or so.
Madden and Summerall were the picture of us all on the booth. Two guys that lived football for their entire lives, first on the field or the sideline and them they joined forces on the booth. And they loved this game more than many of us could ever wish.
Two friends calling a game and being representatives to millions of others
Absolute legend. You don’t tell the story of football without talking about this man.
52 year old man here and this made me cry. Enough said. Will miss you, Coach.
I could listen to John Madden all day, he and Johnny Most were simply hysterical....RIP to both.
Did you hear Most's enraged rant about the Detroit Pistons?
@Michael_Knight823 ...back in the 80s, the Detroit pistons were Johnny's nemesis....lambair, Mahorn and all the rest..
He used to call them mustard and relish...😀
Madden and Summerall were my childhood. I learned a lot about football listening to Coach Madden. RIP to John and Pat
9:26 this whole part about Nate Newton had me weezing
"and then the minute it's over you gotta pull the pants up, you always block block block and then you pull up your pants hahah" - John Madden
RIP John Madden, the man that demystified football with enthusiasm and passion with just a few well-chosen words. The man that gave us the turducken, the original three-bird roast, and the definitive definition of a dog - a "fetch-monster".
He'll be in that great big broadcast booth in the sky, along with the equally late and great Pat Summerall.
Madden, a teacher by academic graduation, taught football for us all.
RIP John & Pat....there calling a great game somewhere right now!
John was truly one of a kind. He is missed on tv.
I could listen to this all day, RIP madden
Absolutely devastating to lose such an icon 😢 💔. I used to love his drawing on the screen! Godspeed John RIP.
He was perfect voice for this game.
John and Pat were the best announcing duo ever! Eternal Rest Grant Them O Lord and Let Thy Perpetual Shine Upon Them.
Wish my generation had him in the booth
I’m a 93 baby and I can kind of relate
My favorite comedian ever. I've been depressed at work and watching made me laugh the most I have in years. Thanks John.
Watching 49ers games in the 80's on CBS it was Madden & Summerall most every Sunday. Man those were fun times.
I maybe a 90’s baby but I can relate to loving Sundays now that I’m older. I didn’t care much for football until the Rams came back to California
John Madden always made things entertaining and so much fun for football! I’m sure pat and John going to broadcast together in Heaven! Rest In Peace
My dads generation had Cosell. We had Madden. I mean they had Madden too but his presence made those games events. I'm not sure we've had that since he retired. RIP to the best to ever do it.
8:28 John Madden sure knew he was talking about
Rip the legendary John Madden 🙏 😢 💔
Its an massive understatement to say John Madden loved football. Definitely gonna miss the big guy!
"sometimes they train dogs in German."
"shoe string is an industrial sized thread"
"is that a real plane?"
You can't help but love the man! Him and Pat are the sound of football.
The Barry Sanders Playoff Run against the Cowboys is the greatest most awesome play or run I’ve ever seen.
Rest in peace, John. You were one of a kind.
Truly one of a kind. RIP
RIP John. You made me fall in love with the game of football as a young kid. You changed the game.
I didn’t really care for football until the Rams came back to LA. I used to just watch Super Bowl for the movie promos and the halftime show
These 2 were total class. Joyous.
Madden was just a pure entertainer!!
Madden was UNHINGED
You say unhinged, I say passionate
Behind every genius is a little insanity
RIP John Madden. True Icon.
The hugest of thank you’s for putting this together- he was beyond words. Superb work… many thanks.
Madden and Summerall ❤️❤️
R. I. P JOHN MADDEN FOR REAL MAN LIKE HE REALLY USED TO BREAK IT DOWN FOR PEOPLE MAN
Aah. All the great Sundays I had with Madden & Summerall. Thanks, John & Pat.
The NFL will never be the same without John Madden R.I.P legend
I will always remember Mr. John Madden for everything. If angels was a person he is the true version of one before and now ... thank you coach 🤟🏽 💯
"You knew they were gonna do it, the fans knew they were gonna do it, the Dallas Cowboys knew they were gonna do it, you knew they were gonna do it...." yeah I'll never forget that game.
Pat and John highlighted....this video could be 20 hours long. Greatest duo ever.

RIP John Madden he had such an impact on the game of NFL his commentary was very unique.

Yes! Thank you guys so much for doing this!!!!
Love Coach Madden! The Greatest!!
This is incredible time to live in and a real treasure listening to John Madden and Pat Summerall every Sunday, always made me wanna go outside and throw the football with friends
One of a kind, will always be missed and remembered forever.
John madden was a awsome man he will definitely be missed
Everyone Will Always Love John Madden
Summerall gave us the information we needed to understand what happened. Madden gave us the information we wanted to hear to enhance that understanding. It was a perfect pairing.
John Madden was the big picture guy, Summeral was his DS.
I loved watching football with my Dad when Madden was calling.
In 1986 I was working as a Bellhop at a hotel. Pat Summerall was in town to call a game with Madden. I was called to his suite to collect his bags at checkout. I arrived to the room and he saw me in the hall. Keep in mind, his voice was that of an announcer / presenter: "There are TWO BAGS in room TEN-TWENTYFIVE." It sounded like the beginning of a down for chrissakes. He tipped me out and I collected his bags on the cart and took them down the elevator to the limo.
So happy to have played that small part in football greatness! Madden & Summerall!!!! Hi Dad!
Throughout time there will be amazing people that live and breathe right along side of you, living in the same time period. I was happy one of them was John Madden during my time.
Miss the father of football. John madden ❤️❤️❤️
The Gary Reasons hit is incredible. You can see the ear pads flying out after contact.
as good as it can be on a gridiron
Until I watched this video, which randomly showed up in my recommended, I don’t think I really had processed how much I miss him already. I just sort of knew and knew well his voice and personality from the age of 7 (in 1996) through, say, age 20 and then was a little less tuned into football. But watching this… it was weirdly emotional. He was an icon. He was special. I miss him so so much. Thank you, John Madden. RIP
Thanks John for being part of my childhood and many moments of laughter between my Dad and I. Dad would then tell me stories of John when he was head coach of the Raiders and how it would be zero outside on the sideline and John would be tromping around with just a t-shirt on.
When he said he'd like to be a blimp, I was waiting for Summerall to go, "Some might say you're ALREADY a blimp." Missed opportunity.
Nonetheless, I was too young to appreciate the amount of humor he brought to the game, but its absence is glaring compared to what we have now. RIP Madden
RIP to more than a Legend
John Madden. A true legendary coach and the greatest commentator of all time.
An amazing man. God bless you
