For those who don’t know and are interested, Mario is a combo character in ultimate and smash 4 too but his combos tend to be more vertical or centered around up air. Also he has almost no lag on any of his moves, he can just always have hitboxes out. He’s a borderline high/top tier in both games, and just finished 3rd at the Ludwig Smash Invitational.
funny enough,in sm4sh most his combos were dependent on either up throw,or a shit ton of up tilts. Up air was only used to finish the combo,not start it

I can only imagine the frustration smash 4 Mario’s had when they learned up tilt was basically pointless for combos in ultimate (though of course the universal landing lag changes plus his Fair probably helped

I love how you cover these different versions of *Mario* it's cool to see all their strengths and weaknesses
*also using Juice Archipelago from Sonic Lost World as background music was a nice touch*
Other than falcon, Mario/Doc have been my most played characters in both Melee and PM/P+, and i've always said if Mario and Doc from Melee merged into one comprehensive character mainly taking from the pros of their kits, there would be a real chance that he could be viable in tournaments, and PM/P+ proved me right

Just a note for anyone curious, landing lag for aerials is mostly negligible in smash 64, as canceling results in 0 landing lag for any aerial. Mario’s down air can combo into an up air or up tilt on shield or even just into them normally. And depending on the reaction time, I think up smash can be a mixup also.

I actually still play Brawl Mario alongside with Brawl Sonic seeing how they’re low but have insane combo game potential

I do love Brawl Sonic, he is just fun and takes skill.
Sonic is mid while Mario is bottom. Though I think Sonic is better then most people give him credit for.

Amazing work with the video back in brawl I main Mario and I didn’t know why he was trash I watched some videos but they didn’t give a lot of information until your video thanks man and keep up the good work.
I think ssbb mario would have been really cool if they integrated fludd more into the moveset. Maybe make the up b the rocket jump, the side special the turbo nozzle. Or even give him the ability to swap between them. He would have been such a different character though and I understand why they wouldn't have wanted to make as big of changes for such an iconic character

Honestly, this was very insightful to see, never really dug around too much of Brawl's meta and I was actually really surprised to see just.. How much Mario sunk, given I've only ever played Brawl casually.
Honestly hope one day you could maybe cover some stuff about Luigi, seeing him so low in PM makes me wonder what happened to him, ahah.

Another big difference between Doc and Mario in Melee you didn't mention: Doc's back air is actually among only a few moves he has that is /weaker/ than Mario's, but compensates its lower damage and knockback growth with higher base knockback, better range, and a nasty 23 degree semispike knockback angle making it one of the best edgeguarding and gimping tools in the game.
Likewise, though not huge given the myriad other problems he has in brawl, it might be worth mentioning he lost the ability to cancel his up-B into a wall jump in Brawl, further weakening his recovery options alongside the loss of Tornado. Couple this with the special fall landing lag glitch that happens in Brawl when grabbing the ledge out of an Up-B, and him having one of the worst special landing lag in the cast making his options to get back on stage genuinely horrendous.
Eeehhv you make it a point to say that smash 4/ult mario is different design wise….
I think you should have included 4+ult he still has those other combo routes but his ladder combos/juggling is more central. Neutral is similar too.

Guess I gotta appreciate what each Smash has. Smash 64 and Ultimate don't have anything unique about Mario which is why I didn't list them.
My ideal Mario is Smash 4's playstyle combined with Melee's Down Air and Down B along with Brawl's model as a whole. And by playstyle I mean Mario's combos and techniques he has in Smash 4 that got him A Tier.

Be nice if the next smash game had a complete revamp moveset. Mario was my main til smash4 and move on to newer characters. I sometimes miss playing as the nintendo shoto of the mario series

Interesting use of the Sonic Lost World Beach theme instead of a Mario theme. It's funny because Lost World is basically a Mario game in all but character

I'm a mario main in smash bros ultimate, and it pains me to see brawl mario in bottom tier. Even my other main, kirby, who consistently is one of the worst characters in smash bros (Except 64) is higher tier than mario in brawl. Thankfully after brawl, mario got a large revision and has become much better in smash 4 and ultimate.
Well. Mario was never really good all that much in the ability department to even remotely begin with. Especially since he's even pretty close to actually being a Low Tier character in both Smash 64 and Melee if he ends up dropping a few spots lower. Remember that the only reason why Luigi has mostly always shined in the ability department is because that Sakurai has made several attempts to pull him out of Mario's shadow as time went on. Since Mario has always been the much more famous one, he really doesn't need to shine in the ability department nearly as much (since we already have Luigi for that one). LOL Just think that they both outshine each other in different areas. I think that the only reason why Mario was immensely buffed in Smash 4 was because that Sakurai finally realized on how he was severely nerfed pretty badly in Brawl back then.

Every character in P+ is pretty balanced, but there is characters I hate fighting against, but I wouldn't shit on their design. I hate fighting Falcon, Sonic, ROB, Marth, Ike. I play Ness so I suck against really aggressive rushdown characters and range boys.
@@ZachHonest I don’t doubt that they are all well put together, it’s just really hard to keep that level of objective quality though out all the characters. Some characters might have not been given as much love.
@@toastywhiteboy7822 P+ is really quality oriented. Trust me every character is given love in some way. Maybe puff if I had to say but most people are okay with her being the way she is. Pm doesn't even want to add new character cuz they know it can heavily change the balance, that's how quality oriented they are.
