I honestly love how P+ changed Wario’s moveset to more of his iconic moves from the Wario Land games and his default costume is his original overall design, I feel this better represents Wario and his games more!
It's soured me for years how the only thing holding me back from maining Wario in actual Smash-games has been his moveset. Forever the version of him I grew up with from his excellent quadrology of games, is stuck on Project M...
Not just Wario Land, ironically that also helps represent WarioWare better too, because his Wario Land abilities like the shoulder bash are present in a handful of microgames all across the series since the first one, and especially in GiT where that’s his primary action when playable, and exclusive to him, also the bike now only being used for his intro and perhaps a victory screen is more true to WarioWare as well, because Wario NEVER mistreats his bike like in Smash, at worst he just loses control and falls off while driving similar to in his intro, but the bike always remains intact for comic relief as if the bike is better off without him and can safely drive itself, though he crashing a vehicle is also true to the series how he crashed his old plane, so keeping that ain't so bad, though the way he keeps his bike intact in canon shows how he learned anf ain't crashing that vehicle like the other one xd And on many WarioWare titles it’s been shown he’s still a very strong capable man, especially in the earliest and latest WarioWare games where you would see Wario exercising or eager for treasure and going great lengths to get it, he’s still the same Wario through and through, and he really likes to show up his anchor arms and flex, which also works for comic relief in both series, and heck, a lot of Wario's microgames show how vain and proud he is of his muscles, and his most common and overused render features him proudly flexing his arm while smiling at the camera Also he plucking coins from the opponent in his pummel is just perfect for him on so many levels, that tiny detail does a way better job representing Wario’s greed than anything Smash has ever done!, which is super important because that’s the main driving force of the character as a whole! He’s all about the money, and it’s super often referenced outside his games, he’s basically Nintendo’s Mr. Krabs, and it’s just natural for him, he punches coins out of enemies in all Wario platformers, and the sole reason why he makes video games in WarioWare, is so he can get people’s money without getting into legal trouble, and stealing from your opponent is very allowed in Smash, so of course he won't think it twice xd And its important to note that Wario's actual humor present in the whole franchise revolves around how prone of accidents he is, he's not funny because he's a clown that relies on cheap toilet humor, he's funny because he's that one lovable jerk that gets what he deserves or both ironically and hilariously fails miserably to achieve his selfish goal, his pride and greed are the primary things that lead to his misfortunes, which is something you even see in gameplay and story of his games and many others outside his own, which once again, is very lacking in Smash, he's funniest when he's not trying to be funny, which is most of the time, because his eyes are so deeply focused on the price he can't see he's running straight at lamp post after lamp post, which doesn't matter to him because no physical pain will get in his way to get that sweet loot, and heck, the guy is so used to everything that he learned to weaponized it, which is the very foundation to his transformations in Wario Land! And Smash making a bigger focus on the gross side in his character is off, because that's often left on the sidelines, on stuff like the microgames and promos, while in game its very rare for Wario to follow that, he's all about the money and treasure from start to end, that humor should really be on the stages, because that isn't excusive to him, and the stage is supposed to represent the microgames themselves, that ironically don't show ANY of the crass humor, they got it backwards as heck there
@@dustymcwari4468also his new alt costume in P+ is taken from WarioWare D.I.Y., one of the more lesser known entries in the franchise, but I played it a TON as a kid, so seeing the costume in P+ but a big goofy grin on my face :)
Project Plus and Project M are my absolute favorite iterations of Wario. He feels strong and true to his origins and the combos he has are just so satisfying to me. Thanks for making a video detailing a character I love so much!
This was downplayed over time, but Wario was originally designed to be a tricky character, deceiving his opponents. The ftilt could be held, increasing the windup before the attack. It didn't do any more damage, but it messed with people's timing. Backthrow can move, yes, but it can move in the opposite direction of the throw, totally throwing off DI from people who don't expect it. And the biggest one, Wario originally had a fake charge on his dash grab. IIRC Wario Man still has it. He pretends to charge to bait shield then breaks out of his own charge and grabs you. It's ridiculous. Honestly, Wario had some of the bigger changes just during P:M's history. His old recovery used to be way better since his charge had its full duration.
Wario’s moveset in PM >>> Brawl. I see what they were trying to do by making it focus on WarioWare, but he had so many possible moves from Wario Land, so I’m glad PM saw that
Correction: at 2:30, when you mention Brawl Wario's grab release jank, it's only his _air release_ that has the problem, not his grounded grab release. Ness and Lucas have 10 extra frames on their ground release, allowing them to be famously infinitely regrabbed by Marth when they pop out to ground, or set up for quick kills on other characters (like Wario's forward smash, for example). Wario's air release doesn't have extra lag -- it's the same as every other character frame-wise -- but thanks to his high air friction, he gets sent directly upwards instead of up and away, allowing for huge punishes (and even chaingrabs across FD ending in a kill from the worst character in the game!). The grab release jank you showcased in the video doesn't actually work on Wario, due to Marth's pummel forcing Wario into a ground release; if Marth were to just hold him still, and then wait for Wario to break out without pummeling, you would get Wario's air release. While I understand that you guys are much more focused on the Project M side of things and that it can be a bit tough to find out information on Brawl, it's clear that these segments could be a bit more researched. For future videos in this series, I would highly recommend checking out and asking around the Brawl Central discord server for more information on the Brawl side of things, they're a very welcoming community that would *kill* for the opportunity to help and shine a spotlight on an oft-overlooked and misrepresented game. Regardless, great video! I've been a fan of this series for a while, and it's always nice to see my man Wario get some appreciation. I'd love to see one about Toon Link next!
I remember having fun fighting Wario as Captain Falcon back then and there were many options for a follow-up on the grab release (Up-B being the most guaranteed one, but iirc, tilted-up F-Smash and the Knee were guaranteed). Also, Falcon's Up-Air was a good move to use against Wario. But I could be misremembering considering I haven't touched Brawl since the Wii online was permanently down.
Wario needs more recognition from his own games. Lots of attacks in Smash Ultimate feel more generic and relate to Wario on how he looks rather than how he plays. Project M knows Wario by heart.
I absolutly love his dair, it leads to a combo to itself and can rack up a lot of damage and pressure to the adversary, he is one of my fav character in project m
Brawl had so much cool under developed tech. Like Wario had an infinite using a bike tire. It was more similar to the pikachu quick attack lock where the opponent needed to be in a jab lock state.
I think wario was the most charming in brawl. His walking animations and stuff are kind of like game and watch’s. Which honestly fits wario. In the later games his animations are smooth which is fine. But i think its funnier in brawl
I love how Wario has some moves from the Wario Land games. I wish Wario Land/Wario World in general had a bit more representation in official Smash games.
@@rayminishi689 more specifically WL2, 4, Shake It, and maybe World as well, because 1 is powerup based, and was kind of Mario-like, which is something the series itself moved away from, WLVB is just the same as WL1, 3 starts up with a heavily nerfed Wario because you unlock and upgrade his abilities throughout the game, and MoD is too much of its own thing, while the first four games I mentioned let you use Wario's abilities at its fullest from the very start and on the very first level/tutorial, so no need to play the whole thing or too long to get a grasp of all the things Wario can do on his own in his games
Low key him being shorter actually makes him a better character imo. Its easier for him to avoid attacks, if he was larger I could see it being bit of a nerf. But who knows lol.

He has probably one of the strongest spikes in smash bros history in PM, his down air is a spike hitbox the entire move with almost zero sourspot
Wario is the best Nintendo character ever imagined 💛

(9:35) No wonder why Wario's Dash is changed to a shoulder bash in Smash Ultimate.
Turns out his new down smash has a meteor effect so if you time it right on the edge you can spike them. It’s really satisfying.
